Next Year's Team

  • I really think we see big improvements by whoever ends up staying. McBride needs to be able to at least handle 10 minutes a game and not be a negative. We either need Grimes to stay and become a scorer or Stanley to come and fill that gap.

I’m not worried yet. This is what happens at most places when you replace 5 starters…

  • 26-10 with this team… 4 seed.

Sitting here a year ago after losing in the final 4, looking forward at this point with 5 new probable starters, I’d probably take that.

    We’ll be better next year.

  • My ideal rotation: PG: Dotson, McBride SG: Grimes, Garrett SF: Rayjon Tucker, Agbaji PF: Achiuwa, Lawson C: Azubuike, McCormack

It’s definitely ambitious but certainly possible.

  • Christian Braun might be an unsuspected gem too

Which Lawson is that? KJ I would assume.

Yes. Definitely KJ. Dedric’s video salute to the fans announcing he’s leaving will probably come out this week

  • Where is dedrick going? d-league? Europe?

  • @FarmerJayhawk I assumed as much but figured it best to ask.

Yeah that team would be sicko.

  • Bosthawk said:

Probably the former for a couple of years before the latter.

  • I do not think azubuike will be back Bill self has stated during the season that he doesn’t think he will be back

  • Dedric is going to make a metric f***ton of money overseas

  • I would bet the Farm Mcbride is better than KJ and Chuck right outta the gates. They both had 2 good games and were smoked repeatedly on defense all while being turnover machines the rest.

  • And the lack of Vick around the program will be great for Agbaji and Grimes, who I think is about even money to stay or go. I feel for Vick since he has issues that aren’t entirely his own making, but the sense I got was he was nothing but a bad influence in the locker room and “stunted” the development of a couple guys.

  • I want to thank the players for a good but turbulent season.

The Adidas trial took the sails out right from the start.

We always have a crippling injury that impacts the team negatively. Insert important 2019 big man here_________

Who woulda thought Vick would get adios’d mid season. We made do with what we had. He is on the most disappointed list for sure.

Saw some major improvement over the year from Dotson and McCormack. Ochai gave this team a vital weapon when they needed someone but we ultimately found out he is still a young kid that needs experience and time. His future is bright. Mitch really saved our butt at times again. Dedric gave us his numbers. Your old man game at the y will make you rich overseas. Thanks for doing what you could. We wouldn’t even have had him if he was an athlete. Thanks Marcus for your defense and your attitude towards the game. He does things the right way but man learn how to shoot boy. Dont do anything else. Hire a shooting specialist. FIX IT.

Those who were not mentioned. I dont have a positive thing to say so I’ll leave it at that. Time for Self to hit the road recruiting, high school kids, transfer kids, grocery stockers, back alley side games where the next Ja Morant lies and pressure the NCAA on Silvio’s appeal. He would be our best player next yr if eligible.

Self has some soul crunching to do this year. The Auburn defeat should be an eye opener for him on multiple levels. Their athletes were better, at Auburn. That’s how you know the times have changed

  • @BeddieKU23 Auburn’s players aren’t better athletes, they’re more experienced. Last night was a classic example of experience vs. talent and experience won. Auburn played 8 players 10+ minutes last night. 2 seniors, 5 juniors, and only 1 sophomore.

KU played 7 guys 10+ minutes last night. 6 of them were in their first season at KU. This is the same thing that happened the last time KU fielded a team this inexperienced. KU lost 10 and 9 games and lost in the second round to Stanford and Wichita State in ugly ways. The core of those teams stayed together and did alright by the time they graduated with a Final Four and 2 more Elite 8’s.

If this core stays together, they’ll be fine by the time they graduate and have some accomplishments worthwhile.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 Auburn players are not better athletes? What?? Did you watch the game? Self, Grimes, and Dedric all commented on how fast and athletic they were. How they were surprised by how athletic they are.

As Self said they have players that make plays you can’t coach, That’s athleticism,

there was no question that they were better athletes - - for the most part quicker - just totally more athletic - -made us look silly a lot of times

  • @Woodrow Other than Dedric and maybe Grimes (although Grimes started playing much better consistently late in the season), Auburn didn’t have better athletes across the board. What they had was an experience advantage. That core has been together for 3 years now. They largely mirror the Mason/Graham core of KU as far as their development goes. Say what you will about how Pearl acquires his players, but the man knows how to coach and develop players.

Last night was an experienced team of very good athletes with refined skill sets taking on a team of elite athletes who lack the experience and haven’t refined their skills to match their athleticism yet. If the core of this team stays together for 3+ years, this is a F4/national title caliber team because they are elite athletes.

Dotson is the fastest player I’ve ever seen at KU, Garrett is one of the quickest guys I’ve seen, Agbaji is on of the most athletically gifted players Self has ever had, McCormack has T-Rob levels of potential, and Grimes may not be elite at anything, but he has the tools to be a very good all around player like Brandon Rush was.

This core was not outmatched athletically last night based on what I saw. They were out experienced which has been their issue most of the season which wasn’t too surprising given their were 7 rotation players in their first year of playing at KU.

  • I’m sure I’m in the minority here but I don’t see DL or QG leaving.

Lawson is 99.9% gone. He will have a degree and someone willing to pay him a significant amount of money to play overseas. I have no idea why he would stay.

  • If he doesn’t sneak into the 2nd round of the draft that is.

KJ - gets his degree - -but are you sure on Dedric? - - KJ older

  • KJ younger? Red shirt SO

  • KJ is older. He had to take a medical RS at Memphis.

  • I think KJ will grad transfer out as well.

Yes. Two years at Memphis. Two years at KU.
