Wiggins. Not good.

  • I’m prepared to eat crow on my criticism of Cavs for trading Wiggins away for Love. Dan Gilbert is an idiot and a jerk but trading away Wiggins wasn’t wrong. Of course he could have had Embiid. But that wouldn’t have helped LeBron.

  • @approxinfinity Kind of a wash Love is a headcase full of panic attacks and currently sidelined by injury. But he did help Cleveland win a championship. Wiggins is an overpaid slightly above average player with amazing god given talent that he doesn’t utilize. I’m doubtful, but hopeful Wiggs figures it out someday. The T-Wolves are trash though and I don’t think Thibs is getting the most out of these guys- his offense sucks.

  • This comment kills me (too true and I wish him better) Maybe Wiggs can’t shoot, but at least he plays lazy defense, doesn’t rebound, and has never averaged more than 2 assists per game.

  • @dylans

Wiggins is averaging 2.2 APG this season.

  • The guy does not care about basketball. He got paid after that season averaging 23 points and now he’s done. He’ll be a bench player as soon as he gets out of Minnesota. And then he’ll be out of the league by the time he’s 32. He will have most likely made over $200M by then, just playing basketball. Well over that if you include endorsement money. He is the person that people reference when they make the “contract year” argument or “never pay them top dollar.”

It doesn’t help that Thibs is the coach. And that they brought in A+ teammate Jimmy Butler. And A+ person Derrick Rose. And that they traded away Rubio for basically nothing, who was the person that made that offense go in 16-17.

Minnesota front office got impatient and ruined a good thing.

  • @JayHawkFanToo Years not over, but it’s not my comment. Just sums up how disappointing Wiggins is. It seems Wiggins flat out has no desire to play basketball other than for the money.

  • We have seen this before, pro players gets drafted high, has a few decent seasons, gets big contract and then just doesn’t seem to care from there forward. Wigs is by all accounts a good kid, he just doesn’t seem to have any fire in his game for whatever reason. He was that way here most of the season too, I think we all thought it was because he was a OAD and didn’t wanna get hurt.

  • @kjayhawks lol He’s still “protecting the goods”.

  • @dylans

The problem with some of the OAD is that they are so young when they join the league that even when they are physically ready, mentally and maturity wise they are far from it. Wiggins is still pretty young and he will ride his current funk out and will be better. He was Rookie of the Year and also on the all sophomore team so he definitely played well enough to get the nod and he will get better and have a pretty good career when all is said and done.

  • Wiggs haters, 26 pts, 6 boards, 5 assists, 1 block. A win tonight

  • They’re 9-3 since Butler left and Wiggins seems to be playing better. Team seems to be having more fun. Hope he keeps it up!

  • The big question you have to ask when evaluating OAD players is how they would have improved in another year (or more years) in college versus what they became in the NBA.

Would Andrew Wiggins have developed into a cutthroat scorer and playmaker at KU? I’m betting on no. More time at KU would not have changed his core personality. He doesn’t have great court vision, so it’s doubtful he would have developed into being a better passer and playmaker. He averaged 1.5 assists at KU in his only season. I doubt we would have seen that number climb very much had he stayed at KU 2 or 3 years.

So as a basketball player, I don’t know how much Wiggins changes by being in college longer.

As a person, that’s up for debate because I don’t know Andrew Wiggins. I will note that I have never seen him featured in the police blotter or heard about him involved in questionable off court stuff. It looks like he’s just a quiet guy that happens to be an incredible athlete.

I don’t think more time in college changes any of that. He was too good an athlete for most college players to handle, so it would not have helped him develop his secondary skills (the ones that he is still lacking today). Andrew Wiggins could have stayed at KU longer and I don’t think the trajectory of his career would have been significantly different.

  • @justanotherfan Do you think coming from a relatively comfortable background with two high-caliber athletic parents could have dulled any fiery need to succeed in Wiggins?

  • @mayjay I don’t think that’s it because there are other very successful players who had parents that were professional athletes.

I don’t know what the issue is with Wigs. He looks like he needs a new environment.

  • I heard the boos were about the lack of the foul call

I have heard the argument that coming from a more comfortable upbringing dulls desire, but I don’t know that I buy into that. Maybe there is a bit of a lack of desperation, but there are lots of sons of former pro athletes that have succeeded. Look at what Patrick Mahomes has done for the Chiefs.

Andrew Wiggins was blessed with uncanny physical gifts. However, he is a very quiet, reserved person in terms of personality type. He’s not a Kobe Bryant or Michael Jordan in that respect (Bryant is also the son of a former pro). Wiggins’ personality is the biggest difference between him and every top basketball player you can probably think of.

He was always a better athlete than the kids he grew up around, but I bet he was also always the kid that was constantly being prodded to be more aggressive since that is not really his personality.

  • @justanotherfan Jordan, Kobe and Mahomes are all much smarter than Andrew Wiggins. I just don’t think the kid is exceptionally bright. At least he doesn’t have the same sports IQ. Jordan was very creative. Kobe was a master at incorporating pieces of game into his own. Mahomes is extremely unconventional and just knows what works. Has Wiggins ever demonstrated much creativity on the court?

I’ve heard countless stories about Jordan, Kobe and Mahomes all studying their craft extensively, their natural athletic skills enhanced by a profound understanding of the game.

I saw a clip a couple of weeks ago of Lebron James talking to his son about the last couple of minutes of his AAU game, walking him through several possessions.

I’ve never heard Andrew Wiggins break down a game situation in detail in a press conference. I’ve never read a story about Wiggins studying video of himself or opponents to gain a tiny edge. Everything I have ever read about Andrew Wiggins improving has been him working on the physical side of things.

I don’t know that Wiggins has put the emphasis on the mental side of things that other greats have. You are correct that he just doesn’t show much creativity on the floor. I think that has limited the ceiling of where his athletic gifts can take him.

No, as other said, Kobe and Mahomes grew up without need so that has nothing to do with Wiggins personality. He’s a type B personality which was on display at KU as well. That KU team lacked a lot of leadership for the amount of talent on that team and was why they underachieved so badly. That team may have been the most individually talented of the Bill Self era, but that was also his worst team because that was a group of individuals and not a team.

  • Wiggs had 31 pts, embiid 42 last pm. Embiid was hurt and they both were so young, still are. Embiid is crazy fun, wiggs is shy and introverted. Great reps for KU.

  • Embiid 30pts 14 rebs…at half time. Wow

  • Wiggins the OKC killer with 40 points, 10 boards, and 4 assists tonight. Also had a clutch block. I wish he were engaged like this every game.

  • @KirkIsMyHinrich he’s been playing pretty good! I have a lot of faith in him. He’ll fill out and get stronger. Still young.

  • I’d be happy to be totally wrong. Glad to see he’s doing better.

@Crimsonorblue22 I appreciate your faith in him.

Looks like Jimmy Butler is stirring up drama in Philly. Maybe Wiggins grows from his departure.

  • @approxinfinity Butler, drama queen

  • Big night for KU alum. Wigs got 40, Oubre 26, BMac 20, Embiid 20, J Jackson 13.

  • Bmac! That’s awesome!

Oubre’s 26 was a career high. I don’t think he was being used properly on the Wizards to be honest. I don’t think he’ll be on the Suns either, though.

Frank Mason buried on the Kings bench unfortunately. Graham in action for the Hornets.

  • @KirkIsMyHinrich

The Wizards seem content to keep Otto Porter’s ridiculous contract. They had Oubre on the cheap and were giving him big minutes here and there. Puzzling for sure but looks like that whole organization is a mess as well. I agree he won’t be a Sun past this year. I hope a playoff team picks him up
