FIBU U18 Self/Manning/Grimes

  • @stoptheflop bill self offense!

  • Kinda slow start to 2nd half

  • It appears the USA players have picked up HCBS offenses!. Maybe not so much the defense…

  • I will just say that Bill Self did the best job in trials that I have seen in 15 years in this business. Covered nuances of euro officiating. Hadn’t seen that before. Jerry Meyer

  • 🥇bill self, pretty sweet, kicked their butts

  • Gotta be a great recruiting tool for us!

  • just total domination. Grimes is gonna be sweet his one year here at KU. - -JUMPIN - - -GEE - - - HOSSIE - -TOADS I want Robinson Earle & Hurt Sooooooooo bad.

Looks like they play quite well together on the floor even at the same time. - -I know Coach Self is telling them both - -you BOTH can play on the floor at the same time pretty sweet combo. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • Grimes mvp

  • Hope we get earl and hurt! And Anthony!

  • @Buster-1926 ah geez, coach probably doesn’t have room for it!🤣 it would be sweet though

    Seems okay. 🤔

  • @BShark where will that trophy go?

  • More on self “Obvious that [Self] has been meticulous and fastidious in his preparations with this [U.S] FIBA U18 team,” added ESPN analyst Mark Jones on Twitter. “They’re prepared on both ends, his zone offense shredded Canada when they went to it, briefly.”

  • @Crimsonorblue22

Trophy goes to the US Basketball headquarters. Grimes accepted the trophy on behalf of the team which means he was the team’s captain. Would love to see JRE, Hurt and Grimes play together at KU.

  • @JayHawkFanToo we need a replica🏆 was cool to hear grimes say he was excited to go to Kansas w/Self!

  • @JayHawkFanToo Very good chance that never happens. Better than 50/50, I’d say 75/25 at this point Grimes is OAD. He’s already showing up as a projected lottery pick in several 2019 mock drafts.

Considering KU has no scholarship seniors this season, they need some players to pan out and leave early to make room for Hurt, JRE, and anyone else they sign in 2019.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 One open scholarship but in general yeah. I fully expect Doke, Dedric and Grimes to go. Silvio situation is still murky.

  • If we had hurt and earl, I’d play them both at 3 and 4. Suffer on D, but they both board and shoot so well.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10

Agreed. Grimes was the Tournament MVP and he will likely be as good or better than Josh…and this is setting the bar pretty high. Dedric and Doke likely gone and still have one scholarship left from the upcoming season so scholarship should not be a problem.

I think at the college level you can easily play them together at 4/5. Interchangeable on O, primarily JRE at the 5 on D but can switch.

  • Gotta have Silvio in there

  • @BShark they both have such nice jumpers, we haven’t had that from big guys for awhile

  • Just watched the replay. A couple observations: -Grimes is going to be really good. He’s way more advanced than almost anyone on the court. I’ll be curious to see how his game translates against better athletes in college. Well-deserved MVP though. -Hurt and JRE are almost must-gets. Hurt is so skilled, and a better defender than I thought. He’s a ways away, but will be a really good college player. JRE is coldly efficient and had a great motor. He and Hurt would be great complements. Honestly, Hurt/McCormack/JRE would be the best frontcourt in the country, and that’s not even including Silvio. -I want Cole Anthony baaaad. He’s as most complete a guard as I’ve seen in awhile. No idea if we have a shot at getting him (sounds like it’s a pretty locked down deal so far), but he and Dotson would be dirty. -There are a few under the radar types that impressed me: Watts and Josiah James especially. James reminds me of Marcus Garrett somewhat. -What happened to bigs? This team was pretty thin up front. How are Bacot and Hepa ranked that high? -Another reminder of how good Self is. USA wasn’t great for awhile, then found another gear late. He’s probably the best at maximizing talent.

  • @FarmerJayhawk almost exactly what I thought.

Yeah I was not impressed with Hepa. Also by going to Texas he didn’t exactly pick a great coach to help out his offensive game.

  • @BShark I think they play really well together and as odd as it may sound at this point actually looked like they were having fun working together on the floor - -both were making some sweet passes. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • Just look at this guy play. He has elements of Brandon Rush, Josh Jackson, Mario Chalmers, Russ Robb, and shoots a 3 pointer like Svi. NBA All- Star potential caliber, in my books. just look at the way he gets after people defensively- he slaps the ball away, and is off to the races. His handles are so good, he could play point guard. His drives to the basket remind me of JJ. I think we got our 3 point shooter:

  • @KUSTEVE Grimes had a great tournament but his three point shot was off. Tbf it is from longer range than the college line plus so many games in a short span but still 6/25 is just not good.

  • @KUSTEVE Grimes is not a great shooter. That’s by far the weakest part of his game at this point and he’ll be in the NBA before his long range shot develops. I’m expecting him to be somewhere around 35-37% season which is decent at best.

  • Grimes looks really good, if he can improve his 3 point shooting, he’s a star in the making. I think we can all agree the 3 ball is most likely the biggest question mark going into next season. Dotson, Grimes and Garrett all need to improve in that area, the good news they’ll have the summer and fall to make progress.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 I watched the highlights- I didn’t watch the games. All I saw were 3 point swishes, then I read this morning he only went 6 for 25 from 3, so…maybe he’s not the 3 point answer I had hoped for. If he can shoot 35% from 3, the rest of his game will carry him.

  • @KUSTEVE

Over 200 attempts this year in HS he shot 39%.

Will 6 games tell the story on his shooting? Unlikely I think.

I’ve seen some question his mechanics or effectiveness from shot to shot. Something the staff can address this summer. His shot looks good off the dribble from what I saw.

If he’s here just one year and that looks very likely we’ll see. Svi didn’t set the world on fire in year one for recent example but the comp isn’t apples to apples. I believe Grimes is a good shooter and will have every opportunity to showcase such.

  • @BeddieKU23 If he could hit 39%, I’d be jumping for joy. i think he’ll definitely get some good looks with our offense…teams are going to have to try to stop us inside, which should open things up on the perimeter.

  • @KUSTEVE

Just to follow up a bit. He might not be the “sharpshooter” we have become accustomed to with Svi, Graham, Mason etc. Maybe he’s more along Vick/Selden where he has games he’s red hot but his averages are inconsistent sometimes.

I do know one thing watching his games he’s going to impact the game in so many ways.

He is the secondary ballhandler any coach dreams of having, he’s a heck of an athlete, passing-vision, rebounding, and size for the 2 guard position will cause fits to most teams trying to guard him. He’s not a finished product but heck I don’t know if we’ve signed a guard as ready as he is to compete and impact the game.

  • BeddieKU23 said:

JJ and Wiggins. But other than that…and of course Grimes is much more of a guard than those two.

  • @BeddieKU23 39% in HS isn’t great. That likely translates to 35-37% at best in college

  • @BShark

Definitely those guys were wings in KU’s system which you noted. A few extra weeks of coaching from Self can’t hurt him at all once he gets into Lawrence

  • @Texas-Hawk-10

Or could translate to 41-43%, goes both ways

  • @BeddieKU23 How many players increase their shooting % when transitioning to a deeper 3 point line?

His outside shooting in Canada does not bode well for Grimes shooting a higher % than he did in HS next season.

    1. No idea. HS stats are not as widely available to compare. Grimes stats were available, Dotson’s were not for example.

    2. If you think 6 games tells the story on what his shooting will be for KU, that’s your opinion to have. Outside shooting for this team has already been singled out by our coach as the biggest question mark.

  • It’s all but impossible to compare HS and potential college 3 point percentage. The lines are different, the competition is different, and the style of play is different. Grimes could shoot better in college since he’ll have a bunch of open looks, or the deeper line could cause him some problems.

I’m concerned because he doesn’t appear to be a natural shooter. He’s never been a great FT shooter, which tells you the best story.

  • @FarmerJayhawk

Good point, his FT % is of concern.

  • His shot selection got better and his shot % went up as the week progressed. I thought.

  • @KUSTEVE Man it’s about time you showed back up. I was asking the crew the other day where you had vanished to. I was just about ready to get the FBI involved - let them work on something that they AHOULD be concerned with other then Basketball lol. - Was getting ready to send out and Silver alert lol. - -good to see you back. - What? - did Granny feed you a bad batch of vettles? - -you get ahold of one of Ellie mays critters – lol. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • Shooting is a skill … it is a practiced art. The predictions of what someone will shoot in college based on what they shot in high school is always going to be wrong. I have made a fantasy baseball career out of picking break outs based on ignoring assumptions from prognosticators that don’t have the ability to account for progression of the skill set. When the best predictions in fantasy baseball had Yonder Alonso hitting 7 hrs as a projection last year, I knew they were way off, because Yonder had changed his approach, and was blasting out hrs in spring training. Something changed…Yonder started hitting way more fly balls, and he starting racking up some big power numbers.

Devonte did not walk on campus hitting 40% from 3. Neither did Svi. Maybe Grimes only hits 33%…maybe he comes in as a 37%. Or maybe working with coach, and Mr. Townsend and company will allow him to nudge that 3 point shot closer to 40%.

  • @jayballer73 Hey buddy…are you ready to see the best KU team since 2008? Our cup runneth over…
