Self's "A" Game; Look At Us Now.

Looks like Silvio was a good recruiting decision by self and the staff. He may become a monster player. Very tough and athletic.

I expect him to start next year if Doke goes pro.
-
@mayjay Right - good point
-
I have no idea what to do with Nova besides feed Doke the ball and get Spellman in foul trouble. You get him in foul trouble and KU wins that game. We let him run around and do his thing, we lose. Doke is the key to the Nova game. it will be a race to 80.
-
@Bosthawk The Silvio decision, and getting him eligible, saved this season. Period.
Newman the best transfer ever? I’m struggling to come up with another name. This is where Self’s management is masterful. Think about where we were two months ago? Have to give Malik complete credit two. Buying in when your basketball DNA is somewhat counter the flow is impressive.

Fact. I’m not even sure we beat Clemson without Silvio.
Did you catch the article on Malik’s turnaround? It’s really something.
Withey was a pretty good transfer.
-
True- newman did look, as you wrote about at length a while back, like a chemistry-killer bent on improving his NBA stock above all else.
He is now our stud scorer in the tourney on top of being a system guy.

This game was won on the defensive end. And defense like this just doesn’t happen. Two months ago, who would have believed that this team, in this moment, would win with defense?
The fact that Malik Newman who couldn’t stay in front of anyone in the beginning of the season maned up on Allen on the last shot and was in his face the whole time was EPIC!
It really symbolized this team and how they bought in.

Only other player I could think of in the neighborhood is Witney because we don’t reach the 2012 title game without his rim protection.

Incredibly insightful article (on the other site) about Malik’s mid-season struggles. Certainly affirms and validates the correctness of many comments/reactions/conclusions on this board without the first-hand knowledge of a parent. An excerpt:
“Normally coaches would bend a little bit,” Webster (Malik’s father) remembered. “‘Malik, you can get 30 (points) for me so I’m going to let you cut the corner.’ Coach Self didn’t give a damn if he could get 100. He’d say, ‘You’re going to do it how I want you to do it, when I want you to do it.’ And I think that was great for Malik. It taught him that nothing’s going to be given to you.”
-
@BShark @Texas-Hawk-10 Right, Withey. Good name for Newman to be associated with. I’ll look at the Newman write-up.
@BigBad Newman was guarding Allen much of the time, did do an incredible job. Really worked hard. Buying in is truly defined by Newman this season. We’ll talk about that for years to come, and compare others to what he did.
@Bosthawk And saying Newman and “system guy” together, what a compliment to him.
@CR107 Now, about 'Nova and their guards – our guards are better. Wouldn’t want another group to ride right now.
-
I like Malik, from the beginning, I always knew it.
-
@CRH107 The biggest take I got from that article was how much Newman’s father totally supported everything Self did. He was certainly not like X Henry’s dad.
-
@HighEliteMajor Rex Walters, too.

-
@BShark I love that story!
-
@Crimsonorblue22 You were the lead Malik believer. I can tell you I was really worried there for a while. We desperately needed what you had faith in.
@mayjay Almost forgot about Rex. We live in the world of Self I guess. I still have a soft spot for Kevin Young, because we don’t get to the ‘12 FF without him. Malik’s dad trusting Self was the best gift he could give his son. Career changer.

@truehawk93 Time for payback
-
@JayHawkFanToo lol, guess Wichita State realized when it was time to get out of the Missouri Valley huh lol - -na I’m just kidding but kind of funny they move to a bigger conference - -don’t win league - - - - -get knocked out in the 1st round of the tourney - - -and the league they left has a team in the final four is in - -that is KARMA lol
-
@mayjay thanks - -now I can REALLY ENJOY
-
@jayballer73 Broadcast is at the 13:28 mark of 2nd half with us up 48-47. Hope it ends the same way on replay as it did live!
-
Jerrod Haase…

@HighEliteMajor What Silvio has done is beyond remarkable. To go from being in HS 3 months ago to saving our bacon so that he will be in the Final 4 is the stuff of movies. Silvio is living the real hoop dreams. Even with the wild pass 10 feet over Svi’s head into the stands. I love everything about the kid. I have never bought a KU jersey, but I think I’m going to spring for a #22. And to seek Dok so happy and hugging him after the buzzer…priceless.
-
@Fightsongwriter We all from Africa!
-
@BShark It is an interesting and wonderful plot line, no?
-
@Fightsongwriter It’s fantastic. Crazy to beat Duke when Silvio played more than Doke. I mentioned it before but I do wonder if we were a bit better with Silvio in. Not forcing the ball to Doke, playing in rhythm and Silvio is a better rebounder.
-
Rodrick Stewart then?
-
@BShark He did not win them all, but Silvio diving, scrapping, clawing, not backing down from ANYONE was big, BIG, huge. He just left it all out there and played so incredibly well for a kid who should be in high school. I may start writing the movie script tonight. Hoop Dreams 2: Coming to America to live the real dream.
-
@Fightsongwriter The sequence where they should have called a jump ball about 4 times is what Silvio is all about. Kid fights.
-
@JayHawkFanToo Yes! Will always remember him on crutches at the end.
-
@JayHawkFanToo It was actually the B10 that beat the other ACC team. Loyola beat Silo Tech.
-
You are correct. I still have a hangover from the game.
-
KU to the Final Four. T Tech …lost in the Elite 8. Silo Tech …lost in the Elite 8. WVU …lost in the Sweet 16. We’re the Alpha and the Omega of the B12.

Well we already knew that. :p
-
@KUSTEVE ROUGH year for elpoyo and the FFs instead of winning the conference title crowd. That logic never made a lick of sense, because if the conference is complete crap how on earth is KU going to win a title while not winning the league?

Me too. He had a funk for a while this year; sIck, hurt, hitting the books too hard. But he’s not the first one we had to wait a while on to bloom. Thank goodness nobody has hit that wall that has gotten us in some years past. Thank you Hudy. Bonuses should be heading your way shortly.
-
But im muh more pleased with the success the overall league had this year compared to years past.

As always a terrific post.
The guard dynamic in the Nova game will be interesting. It’s POY vs POY (Brunson, Graham). Brunson plays the game differently then any guard we will have faced this year. He backs you down and posts you up. Not easy to defend and you have to have excellent eye coordination and discipline to not bite on the pump fakes.
I expect another fantastic game… We got the E8 monkey off our back, now its time to get Nova revenge!
-
@Bosthawk negative…that would be Bragg. He was a cancer.
-
Yes good article about newman- I wonder how many top ranked kids and their parents would want this message. Self puts up with nothing. His way or highway. May be just easier to go to lesser school, play a lot during your one mandatory season, regardless of real improvement, protect the goods, and then declare. It says a lot about Newman and his dad that they both realized buying completely into HOFCBS was the path. And now Newman is our scoring, defense playing, hustling, passing, rebounding (did I say scoring?) stud. He was arguably my least favorite player this year… now I am sold. And in awe of him. Jayhawk for life even though he is gone after this year.
Not so with some of our other past raw talent guys who didn’t or couldnt buy in. The Brannon Greene’s etc.
-
Coleby and Whitman transferring out left the door open for Silvio. Crazy how the little things can affect things.
-
True - funny how things can turn out (especially when you have a great coach )
Wonder what’s going thru Colby and Whitman’s head right now… what they could have been part of and contributed towards especially with the Preston sadness.
-
@Blown Coleby, Whitman, and Maxwell.

Made the team realize what fighting to prevail really required.
Any team that thinks they can turn it on later is doomed.
-
@Bosthawk I think with Newman he was partially helped by failing at Miss ST. If he first came to KU maybe he flames out here and another school is the redemption story. I think he needed to fail because he had been getting by and winning previously while not playing defense.
-
@Blown And what if Preston never would have run into that curb?
-
@HighEliteMajor yep. I think about that a lot. Especially when it became evident we were closing in on 14 straight. Bill’s quick trigger on that decision was very wise.
Someday I hope we learn the full story.

I don’t blame Coleby at all for his decision. He was projected as the 3rd big at best behind Doke and Preston. Had he known what was going to happen to the roster, I’m guessing he would’ve stayed here.
