Can we stop complaining about the officiating? KU got away with just as much, if not more than Texas did. I was in the arena, had decent seats, and for KU to not have anybody in serious foul trouble all night should speak to how much the refs were swallowing their whistles last night which is surprising considering Higgins reputation.

Doke jumped and the guy backed into him to box him out. I fail to see how doke isn’t eligible to the same space

Yeah, they got that one wrong. I was yelling at the tv again…They also missed a blatant foul by Garrett on Dylan O. down the stretch. I didn’t think they called a very good game either way.

I thought there were a few bad calls, but I didn’t really stay too focused on the refs, which I think is how games should be called, when you don’t notice them.
Bilas said some nice things about Kansas and Self. But he always finds ways to rub me wrong. He slipped in a slam on Devonte that was totally uncalled for. It happened when Devonte had his pass stolen and he said something about him always making soft passes. Rubbish.
Also, I didn’t like his comment about the ref following Shaka back to his bench while conversing. He wasn’t trying to fight with Shaka, but he obviously had something to communicate and if officials aren’t allowed to communicate to teams and coaches, who the hell is? Bilas really went off on him, making statements that were just flat wrong.

@BeddieKU23 Nope. Just watched it again. Doke fouled him twice. First he tried to grab him and shove him out of them way. Then the Tx guy made a good box out and Dok jumped over the top of him while their guy held position. He only fell back when Dok went over the top of him (dok’s weight crushed him back). My wife walked in and saw it and said Dok totally fouled that guy. Watch our bench. Zero reaction to the call. Go watch tape.

@dylans Doke jumped and reached over the guy, landed on him on his way down. That was definitely an over the back on Doke. Refs were actually pretty good on the over the back calls last night. Doke grabbed a couple of rebounds over smaller players and last night without getting whistled which is unusual.

Texas shot 14 FT in the second half alone, KU shot 15 the entire game. Svi had 4 fouls which to me is being in serious foul trouble. Just sayin’…

@JayHawkFanToo Svi picked up his 4th pretty late in the game and not at a point where Self had to sub him. Most of their FT’s also did not come as a result of them being in the bonus. They were fouls at the rim.

Wasn’t the same for KU? I don’t believe KU even got in the bonus until very late in the game when Texas started to foul to stop the clock, I believe with 22 seconds left?

I think this is a lack of driving the ball problem more so than a referee problem. I wasn’t impressed down the stretch when Texas started getting touch fouls and KU nothing, but you just play through that junk and they did.

@Texas-Hawk-10 I guess I should rewatch the foul on Dok. If Dok leaned forward over the other guy it’s a foul. If Dok went straight up he has he right to come straight down, so if the guy backed under him when he was coming straight down (not jumping forward at all) it should be a fouls on the person boxing out. As it is it’s was called a foul and so that’s what it was, without re-watching I will say I was wrong in the heat of the moment. I will say there were a ton of reaching fouls not called on either team. It was a very loosely officiated game. If there was any bad blood it would’ve come to blows.
When did the NCAA stop giving automatic flagrant fouls for hitting a player in the head? Devonte’ has had his clock cleaned a couple times this season with not so much as a peak at the monitor. I don’t think they were malicious, but they used to draw a foul none the less.

@JayHawkFanToo Guess what happens when you don’t drive the ball to the basket?
You don’t draw fouls. This team is comprised of jump shooters and when Azubuike gets it down low, teams aren’t fouling him because he can finish through contact.
It’s not really a secret to anyone but you apparently that this team’s style of play doesn’t draw many fouls.

…and it is apparent to all but you that you don’t draw fouls only when driving to the basket. KU players were frequently bumped on the outside, something the NCAA says you cannot do any more with nary a foul being called…but then, apparently you know better.

Bilas has his own agenda that he has been pushing for a while. He was a much better analyst before he let it get in the way.

@Gunman I have heard almost every commentator criticize refs for following a coach or player while yelling at him when the guy is walking away. Here, though, it was weird because Shaka went a ways down the court to confront him in the first place. I thought Bilas would have been right on if Higgins had initiated the confrontation, but since Shaka did, he has to accept the logical aftermath.
But it might be different in my mind if I knew whether my theory is correct that Shaka got charged with a timeout when he didn’t call one.
Bottom line: the incident left all of them looking bad: the coach, the ref, and the announcers for not finding out what happened.

@mayjay Announcers these days have very little time to find out what is actually going on. They are so busy blathering on about how smart they are and building their brand.

@mayjay I think it may have stemmed from the early game warning of being out of the coaching box. With all our technology why do we waste time on warnings and finally technicals on leaving the coaches area. Just put an ankle bracelet on that zaps them when they violate. It would be a mild one on sidelines violation and major zap (similar to tasers) when coming on the court.

I am thinking the technology would also be wildly popular with coaches and fans if used a bit differently: perhaps the refs could get zapped when replay shows a blown call. Pitchers or batters, when they complain about the ump’s call when replay confirms it… And Bill Walton, when he takes his shirt off or does something else to disturb, say, 50 % of the audience, all of whom have buzzers…

Newman and Doke didn’t practice Sunday I believe. Injuries must be more then just wear and tear. At this point though if a rest day helps then it’s a no-brainer.
We have to tread carefully with this Doke injury and pray its temporary. It sounds like he fought through a lot of pain just to play Friday.
You have to wonder if the Newman injury is an old one. We knew he dealt with something at Miss St. It didn’t seem that noticeable in the game that he was hurt but reports of pre-game was he was limping around…
