#2 and content
-
As much as I would’ve enjoyed the Dukies getting beat and as badly as Grayson just needs his a** kicked(despite being a pretty good player), i’m very content with us in the polls right here. Let them deal with the hype about being #1-while we just keep doing what we do- and even better with some extra bodies soon. April forecast looks very exciting with Wichita & Omaha just a short trip away for those first 2 weekends!
-
Dang brother (or sister) - enjoy the ride! It’s still November !!! lol
-
@nuleafjhawk I hear you, but I most definitely enjoy this time of year. This past week was awesome with all the great games being played. It seemed like March to me which in turn led me to think of things to come. Given our talent(plus future talent), i’m very optimistic about our potential this year. After watching some of the games, I think we should feel very fortunate with our roster and coaches.
-
I love that Duke is taken to the wire twice and that instilled the confidence in the voters to make them unanimous number 1.
-
It’s been a fun November. Fun to watch our Jayhawks develop while we dream about what our team might look like in March.
It’s also fun to watch other teams. I watched the purple kitties blow their game with Arizona State yesterday. Bruce was in typical form; turning purple and screaming at the refs. I don’t blame him because the kitties certainly got ripped the entire game.
It’s fun smacking down Kentucky again. It’s fun watching Calipari have to work with a group with a tad bit less talent, making them count on coaching more.
What isn’t fun is stuff like the NCAA letting UNC off the hook. What isn’t fun is watching the NCAA wiggle out of coming down hard on Louisville. What isn’t fun is watching the NBA continue to hesitate in dealing with the OAD issue.
But I think the yin and yang in college basketball helps make it that much more magnetic.

I have no feel for how good most of the teams in the country are, including KU. Every team just looks really fragile right now, either because of depth, talent, discipline or something else. I have a feeling that this is one of those years where it is going to take a while for teams to sort themselves and the true contenders/pretenders reveal their nature.

Duke is the favourite imo. After that it’s wide open.
-
If Duke is the # 1 team in the country I feel good about our chances.
I think what they are now is what they are in March. Maybe a slightly better version by that time. They are good don’t get me wrong, they have talent 1-5 and 1 solid bench contributor to lean on.
However I see a PG who can’t shoot outside the paint, I see their senior leader that is still an nuclear warhead just waiting to be set off, a freshman big man who’s being exposed a bit trying to play alongside another freshman big who’s stealing the spotlight from him. They don’t defend unless they are going to be a primarily zone defensive team. Trent is solid for a freshman guard who I think is the key to them succeeding going forward. Let’s not forget this team has one veteran (psycho) and a bunch of guys who have little experience. Of course every team has its faults but I see a lot of them in this Duke squad and I’m not sure it changes much over the season
-
There will be several very dangerous teams come March. It’s too early to know who those teams are. Many factors play into this, including injuries.
Injuries not only take players off the floor, but also many injuries are invisible to us fans. Most D1 players who play many game minutes will be dealing with some pains by March. Many will not be near 100% at the end and we really won’t know exactly who these players are and how hampered they will be.
Right now, Duke looks like one of the favorites. But who knows what they will look like in a couple months of pounding the courts.
I’ve been trying to get a solid look at most of the Big 12 teams. I have to admit that what I’ve seen so far is not really that impressive. Texas may end up being a sleeper.
-
Realistically, Duke had no business beating Texas and Florida, those team gave the the games away to Duke. I am sure Duke will be better down the stretch and it obviously has a lot of raw talent but it also has glaring weaknesses. Once you get past the 5 starters, performance drops quite a bit for the next 3 rotation players.

content with being #2? what are we - KSU? when did that happen. i thought KU fans strive for nothing less than #1? or or we content w/ being #2 given the streak continues?
-
Here is a story on ESPN by our old friend Myron Medcalf that rates the various conferences. No real national title contenders for the Big 12 other than Kansas but not a bad team either, solid top to bottom…hmm, where have I read that before?

i love how when KU gets taken to the wire, all KU fans are like “win is a win”, but when other teams go through that - suddenly, its all like “well, clearly they aren’t that good since they got take to the wire”. if i’m not mistaken, UK took us to the wire too and they are much worse than MSU. I would even say Texas is better than UK at this point. Given the powderpuff schedule we are playing, we really have no business harping on other teams wins/losses.

oh…and “#2 and content” would make an awesome banner.

Ahh, there you are. Really glad to finally see you , I heard others on here talk about you from time to time, this is my 1st chance to get to talk to you. - I think we gonna - - - -have some real fun.
First question I think I have is have you talked to " ALL " KU fans to come to the conclusion that when we get played to the wire - we all say oh well a win is a win? & do " ALL " KU fans as you say, make the statement that teams must be over rated when they get taken to the wire?
Bottom line is though, the fans that say a win is a win - -they speak the truth. - -There are many ways to win. - -You have blowout wins , you have " UGLY " wins - -teams play great, they play average , they play subpar, - -bottom line is a win , is a win , is a win. - -Bottom line is at the end of the game, if we have 1 more point then the other guys - -IT’S A WIN. - you win - - you move on.
Is Kentucky MUCH worse then Michigan State ? - -I think not. - -Are they much younger? - hell ya. - talent wise? there is no way that they are much worse then Michigan State - - Would you like to see a Kentucky - -Michigan State matchup in the NCAA’S in March? - -I would, then maybe we can see how much worse Kentucky is then Michigan State.
Your right Kentucky did play us down to the wire. We shot terrible, we played a really bad game - - but we won. - -Do you think that Kentucky played a part in us having an off game? Do you think Kentucky is much worse then KU? -I don’t - they are very talented - just very young
Then you wanna challenge the schedule we have? -Sure it’s not like some we have had in the past. - - Are we the only school that has a so so schedule? - -Are you one of the fence sitters where you bitch if the schedule is what you think is to hard? - -Do you bitch about how a school over schedules? - -I won’t say as a KU fan - cause you sure the hell ain’t a KU fan – - - your just another troll. -OR are you a whiner when a School whatever School you might cheer for schedules a creampuff schedule as you say ? - -Ok, well hope you have a great day, enjoyed the chat, and really look forward to hearing from you ANY time -I enjoy people such as yourself - -you make my day - -you take care ok, and thanks for you well thought out input. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

I always do feel content after number two. I understand where the OP is coming from.
-
@elpoyo I am very content to be #2 at this stage of the season. There are about 30 some games left for everyone to play, so #1 or #2 does not mean squat right now. In fact, all it does is put a larger target on your back, which we do not need. Every team we play it is their NC game because of the name on our jersey. When the season nears the end of March then I will be concerned about our ranking. But not right now.
-
@elpoyo not certainly wearing purple today, but come late March I know we’ll still be playing more ball games and ksu will still be wondering what happened in their football bowel game. it just seems to me that we have a big enough target/pressure on us that being #1 would not be of any help. i’m just going to get frustrated, mad, enjoy and celebrate this great season. Next year I just want to see another Big 12 & National Champion banner hanging, but i’ve never seen a banner for being #1 in the polls thru out the year. I respect your opinion, but I just see this alittle different.
-
@elpoyo Why do you refer to KU as “we”? You are obviously not a KU fan so at least have the kahonas to admit it.
WAIT - - - YOU ARE ZENGER?

Exactly. - - actually being # 1 only REALLY matters is at the end of the season. - - If you are ranked # 1 for 3/4 of the season and enter the NCAA as a probably or very legit shot of being the champ and you lose in the Championship game or before that game do you think people really care or will remember that you were number 1 for 3/4 of the season? - You take a poll and ask someone on any season or a particular season - - -ask them if they can answer two questions - -1st who was ranked number 1 for 3/4 of that particular season and then # 2 who was the National Champion that season. - -I’d bet you anything the response will be like 85/15 they can tell you the champ - -but not who was ranked # 1.
Every game we play we have that bulls eye on our chest - - doesn’t matter if we are ranked # 1 -or # 81 - -like you say - -our game with them for a lot of these schools the game with us - - IS their championship game cause of being the traditional rich blue blood elite of College basketball.
We go to arena’s - where these teams are lucky to play in 1/2 full capacity for their season, but yet when we come 9-10 they are sold out and the place is like a zoo - - The only reason that I see - -the ONLY reason at all that matters for the rankings during the season - -is for seedings at the end of the year for the tourney - -other then that - it’s pointless. - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

I want national championships. While I enjoy the ride much more than @elpoyo does I do think he’s a KU fan. These teams are fun to watch even when they don’t win it all.

Ha… just jacking with you.
Welcome back, elpoyo! You always spark many responses and I like to experience that.

I don’t care about National Championships. I just want us to have good team spirit.
No… just give our entire team a participation ribbon. That’s good enough!
LOL

Some facebook commenters on the Jayhawks say similar things. Annoying to say the least. Like after a disgusting loss to Northern Iowa or Bucknell they’ll write “that’s ok, we still love our Jayhawks” “We know we’re the best team ever, they just got lucky” Yes we do get over our tough losses, but I really get irked reading comment after comment like those!
-
@wissox Oh, that is SO annoying! Yes, I really prefer the rabid, angry response to a loss, where people curse the players, bitterly relive each mistake not just in that game but in years past, snarl at anyone looking for a ray of sunshine, blame the refs, call for the coach to be fired, and basically define the term “poor loser.” Yep, those are the much better fans!
-
@wissox
I.e., UK fans.
-
Oh those posters annoy me too!
-
@wissox Looking for a happy medium. Calm cool and collected in the face of defeat. Able to analyze and interpret the results without becoming overwhelmed by negative emotions. All while still caring enough about the outcome for it to be a huge letdown. Not an easy balance, but I do it well. thanks for noticing. LoL
(I prefer to not dwell on the last crushing defeat of the season as it really has no bearing on the only important team left- next years squad. However it’s impossible not to, I get too involved in the seasons ups and downs.)
-
@wissox and some of us (me) take the low road. "Screw it (cleaned that up considerably…) If these Pussy-Willows (cleaned that up quite a bit too!) can’t beat (name your weak mid-major team), then I’m not wasting my time watching them. Bill Self is an idiot and should be replaced by (name your least favorite coach - mine would be Bruce Weber). There’s always football…
-
I do an SB nation site for Badger football games and this one guy literally 4 times this year has written during the game a message basically saying ‘that’s it, we’ve lost this game’. I always point out that he’ll miss the comeback to victory. During the Michigan game 5 different posters doomed our team because we were losing by a field goal in the 2nd quarter. We have our own Jayhawk fans who are similar in their pessimism.
