Recruit visiting
-
I’m not the only one surprised looks like his 247 profile was made today LOL.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 Do teams like KU ever host a recruit knowing they won’t offer him but in order to get info to pass on to their coaching tree? (Like we got Vick, wasn’t it, via LB?) Or just to give more high profile visibility to a kid with AAU, or some other type of connection to a KU guy, in order to get the kid a recruiting chance elsewhere?
-
I heard there was also a really tall center type kid on the bench too
-
I watched some highlights. There are some full games up on youtube, I skimmed. He isn’t bad. If it doesn’t impact Young, KU has the open scholarship and he is willing to RS and put in the work I don’t see the harm in it. He’s pretty good for a kid that was near invisible on the recruiting sites up until now. DITRs do pop up from time to time. I remember when Barry Brown committed to KSU I was thinking, there are 200+ players better than this kid in this class? No way.
That said KU hasn’t even offered yet so let’s wait and see.
-
@mayjay Unless rules have changed, schools are only allowed to host 12 official visits per year. At a place like KU, I don’t think they can afford to waste an official visit on a kid they have no interest in, especially when KU could have up to 7 openings this season.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 I didn’t know they were limited on hosting! That’s how we learn from each other here. Thanks!
-
I’d read between the lines more about Young if this was an official. I’m glad it wasn’t.

I see no harm if the staff was interested in him. He is quick enough and can finish at the hoop in the manner of Frank Mason. We tend to do well with those under the radar guards.

I am curious where you got that information. I think the number of visits depends on the program’s budget but I could be wrong. Many students visit on their own and the visits are not counted as official.; this happens often with recruits that live close to a school and visit often, usually attending games.
-
@JayHawkFanToo My source was the NCAA Rulebook itself. The version I saw was from 2011-12 so numbers may have changed, but there’s a hard cap on the number of prospects schools can bring in for official visits that varies from sport to sport. For football, it was 50, basketball was 12, and baseball was 25. Each prospect can only take 5 official visits and cannot take an official to the same school mutliple times.
I did not see a cap on the number of prospects schools can host for unofficial visits or the number of times a prospect can visit the same school on unofficial visits. Trae Young could in theory come to KU every home game for an unofficial visit if he wanted and could afford to.
-
I am not an expert on NCAA rules but I would think that 12 is not the limit of official visits anymore; KU brings at least that many for Late Night alone and lots of others throughout the season. This is by no means factual but just anecdotal observation.
-
@JayHawkFanToo It’s still 12 official visits for basketball. A basketball recruit cannot take an official visit to any school until January 1 of their junior year of HS so any prospect who is not already a senior in HS that visits for Late Night is on an unofficial visit.
-
You are correct… here are the details…
Newly Adopted Legislation Proposal No. 2015‐53 Effective: August 1, 2016 In men’s basketball, permit the institution to provide up to 24 official visits in a rolling two‐year period. • Up to 30 official visits for service academies. • Limit of 12 official visits may occur before the initial signing date of the National Letter of Intent.

@BeddieKU23 Exactly. I can remember the so-called experts scratching their heads and wondering why would we want Devonte.

Devonte was a 4 star prospect that went to a d-1 producing machine in Brewster Academy. I seem to remember more people in uproar over Frank who went to a military Academy and was clearly underrated. Regardless we do well finding the right guys that aren’t the flashy top 100 kids.

@BeddieKU23 Graham was a late bloomer. He committed to App St., App St. had a coaching change, Graham wanted out of his LOI which App St. wouldn’t agree to. Graham then decided to go to prep school for a year instead of App St. That summer is when he started catching the eyes of bigger programs and chose KU over NC State.

Still, my question is - - - - -WHY? - - -Just don’t see it. It seems like to just have a body to me- -sorry I’m not interested. Yep. Needs to work on his shooting but this staff is actually pretty damn good at that. It looks like a case of the player trying to recruit the school though.

It was very obvious to anyone that watched any of Graham that he was going to be a damn fine college player.

Probably have to take 6+ kids in this class. Currently at 3. And I’m sure the staff wants another big.
-
I’m fine with this kid, if thats what the staff thinks. Four year guards are a good thing. I saw him walk out with coach Howard and I believe his dad, wasn’t a very big guy but neither is DG or Frank.
-
Yeah Self has done pretty well with undersized 4 year guards.
-
Apparently KJ was a highly thought of recruit when he was in 8th/9th grade if what’s written about him is true. Honestly I’m not much of a fan of the guy who posted about him on another site that has shared his opinion that he is not “KU” level guy. We need bodies and if we are keeping tabs on him I see no reason to say anything bad about him. If Self and our assistants like his talent and the type of person he is then they must think there’s something there for the future. He might not be a Top 100 kid today but 4-5 years from now who knows what he could be. I see good quickness, good handles, the ability to finish at the rim with both hands and what looks to be a decent jumper. Would be an interesting take if the staff is even after him.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 I forget but if it’d been Devonte and Frank visiting a few years back wouldn’t it have said unranked by them too? Or was it they weren’t top 150?

Frank and Graham were both ranked. They were also late risers so the opposite of KJ.

This kid is interesting on video.
He’s a lefty jump shooter, but finishes around the rim with his right hand a lot. Not really sure why that is, but he’s pretty skilled with both hands. Has a nifty little runner he shoots with the right hand that is effective out to about 12 feet.
He can also pass with either hand. On one of his highlights he throws a one handed baseball pass with his right hand that’s at least 40 feet through traffic. It’s a rocket that is right on the money.
The fact that he is adept with both hands makes him a very interesting prospect. I don’t know that I have ever seen a kid play like this.
Yeah, I wish he was bigger. Yeah, I wish he was more athletic. But athleticism isn’t just about jumping high and being strong. He’s quick, balanced, coordinated and can pass or finish with either hand all the way out to 10-12 feet. He’s a hard player to classify because his skill set is so unique.
I think he could be limited defensively because of his size/length, but his quickness should allow him to compete.
