Just curious what happened?

  • Just curious What happened with us and Troy Brown? I know he is announcing today - -and let me preface this and say in ADVANCE so SOME people don’t get their britches all twisted in a knot - -that yes this is coming from the CB but we use to be in the mix & now today - - the day of his announcement we are no where to be seen, and the last 4 CB predictions show Oregon. Now whether you believe in the CB or not is entirely up to you - -But you would have to be blind to at least not take at least part of what it says into consideration.

What that tells me is that there has been some kind of indication or SOMETHING to get their predictions to sway that way at this late stage.- - Which brings me back to my question. - - What Happened, I thought we had a pretty good shot, with him visiting here multiple or being here to see his Sister Jada, NOW NOTHING? He wold be a nice pickup. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @jayballer54

Have you considered that KU might not be a good fit for him? Depending on who leaves and who stays there might be very little playing time available and the better players want to play immediately so they can showcase their talents for NBA scouts.

The only players that are leaving for sure are Mason Lucas and Self. If this is the case, Graham and Vick with be the de-facto top two starting guards and we have 3 players ready to replace Lucas. Until leter in the season, we will not know who else is leaving or staying.

Troy Brown is a SF and if Svi and Jackson leave he would have a good chance of getting playing time; if they don’t. he would be coming off the bench after these two. I can see why he would not want to come to KU unless he waits until the Spring to see if they are leaving.and obviously he is not waiting.

  • @jayballer54

I saw something from an Oregon insider that their style of play fits him better. Offensively & Defensively they like big wings who can handle the ball and he fits that role. Looks like they have sold him on what type of role he’d have there. They may lose their SG and SF to the draft after the year which would put him in line to start immediately.

  • Yea from what I understand, we were never a good fit for him. He wants to run point and be a pretty ball dominant player. Something we pretty much never have.

On top of that we have championship level talent again next year so PT will have to be earned. Playing through mistakes isn’t something that he would be able to do here.

Seems to be more of a trend lately that these top players would rather go to a lesser program and guarantee themselves PT than earn it at a Powerhouse.

I also think Self is rather honest with these guys. Which I like much more than the way Calipari spews bullcrap.

  • @Kcmatt7 that’s why I like the kids that come here! They know they have to work and we play D. They are also interested in playing team ball and working toward championships! Usually the parents are pretty sharp too, usually. Besides that one lady💰💳

  • @Crimsonorblue22 Me too. It makes me respect Bill so much more. And like the players that much more. A guy knowing he is going to come here and work harder than he will anywhere else will always get my respect.

  • @Kcmatt7 Well that makes sense. I just had never really heard a lot. All I knew had heard that we were in the mix and then I thought well with his Sister being here would help recruitment wise just didn’t know - - but what you say does make a lot of sense – we be fine - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • We have been lucky to have some pretty solid pick ups outside of the espn top 100. In fact we have 4 guys in the rotation that were either outside of the top 100, not ranked, or post players in our current rotation. There aren’t too many teams who wouldn’t want Frank, Devonte, Svi, or Landen in their rotation this year? Coach Self will fill the pieces in in some fashion before next year and it will work. I have to quit stressing on recruiting because Coach Self has done his job quite well since he took over at KU.

  • @Statmachine You mean you don’t follow the top 8th graders and how they’re leaning and why we can’t get them to commit?

  • @brooksmd I actually do (not 8th graders though lol) BUT Coach Self will put a solid team together next year without me having to lose any more hair!

  • @jayballer54 I honestly think that if his sister wasn’t a senior this year that we would have landed him. His parents would have pushed hard for it I’m sure. But because she won’t be here, I don’t find it to be much of a factor.

What I am impressed with is Dana Altman. Or for KSU fans, the one that got away. I believe he is a guy that should really get looked at for the college basketball hall of fame. He has been wildly successful (by individual program standards) everywhere he has been. I think last season was the start of a good 8 year run for Oregon where they will be perennially be in top 10.

  • Officially signed with Oregon. No surprise and again, Kudos to Altman. Looks like he is really building something at Oregon and could close out his career on a very high note.

  • Well like has been said, we will be fine. Just read off a site the kid that de-committed or released from Nevada, read off Rivals said Kenny Wooten, was long - - lean - - elite level leaping ability - - quickness in the lane. should be given serious consideration for being listed as a 4 star and was quoted as saying that KANSAS was the one school he definitely wants to visit - - said kind of raw but has the tools, we shall see - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Yep. Also his family built a strong relationship with Altman and the staff. Plus he likes Nike, and wanted to wear Nike gear in college. Not much to do about that really.

I will add a couple things based on opinion unlike the first paragraph which is just regurgitated facts.

When the staff got Garrett, I figured it was then a long shot to get Brown. Not that the KU staff would turn down Brown by any means, but you can only have so many big guards that are not good shooters. That may be a slight towards Garrett, who certainly isn’t nearly as bad of a shooter as Brown. It’s kind of baffling with Brown really. His form looks okay, and he’s a good ft shooter, but his shot just does not go in at a good rate. If he could shoot, he would probably be a top 3 recruit in this class because he really is that good at everything else especially for his size.

Also when I read quotes from Brown about when Self visited him and they had a “real honest conversation” I took that to be fairly negative, and that Brown heard some things he didn’t want to hear. Oregon people are saying he will be oad, so that all kind of jives together.

  • @BShark

It’s the story of this generation, nobody wants to be told honestly they can’t do this or that.

It’s why we have unheard of transferring all the way down to the High School level. Kids attending 3-4 HS’s just to get what they want. Andrew White is the perfect example of the new age mindset.

These top kids will find a school that will sell out to get them. Not saying Oregon did any of this but there situation from a depth chart standpoint is no different that KU’s and he still went to Oregon. Altman is a very good coach and has built Oregon up to be a national contender so in his mind I’m sure he thinks this is a win-win.

Fully agree about the impact getting Garrett was in regards to getting Brown as well. I think Garrett will be a better College player, stay longer and will have a bigger impact.

Hopefully spring recruiting will yield some impact players. November is dead again. It’s at the least, concerning that KU has struck out on its big targets and will have to try and get involved with whatever stragglers are waiting for Spring (which is not many at this point).

  • @BeddieKU23

There is a really good article on the Oregon 247 site about Brown’s decision, it’s behind the paywall though.

If Troy is in fact set on being oad it’s a no brainer you take Garrett every time. Garrett talks about winning, practicing hard and playing defense.

Rumours are swirling about Preston right now. Apparently he posted on snapchat that he will be announcing his decision soon. Either way it’s good I think. If he picks KU the staff feels confident they can get him eligible. If not, go all in on getting Wooten.

  • @BShark making it official tomorrow

Signing Wednesday at Skyline 🙏🏽 and Its My Birthday Wednesday 🤑 https://t.co/RLAM1YX3ESIMG_20161107_225745.jpg

  • @BShark

Billy Preston is the Thon Maker of this class. I will waste zero time on this kid when its pretty much guaranteed he’ll burn the school he signs with, just like Mudiay did to SMU and Ferguson did to Bama/Arizona. I hope we get someone who’s actually eligible.

Very good chance you are right. KU did back off of Ferguson though, so the hope is that if KU is taking him then they feel strongly it will work out. It’s far from ideal but when you put all your eggs in the Ayton basket and get punked by an Orca whale it’s really the only chance KU has at a kid of his talent level. I do like Wooten though, so it certainly would not upset me if Preston went elsewhere and KU locked up Wooten. KU has done pretty well with kids that went the extra prep year lately…

    @Ralph

    🙂

  • @BeddieKU23

You might have hit the nail on the head. Luckily Coach Self has pretty high standards and most players that plan to come and not perform outside the court, like Simmons, will likely not pick KU. After the Diallo eligibility fiasco, I am sure the program is a lot more careful and will not pursue a player that is at risk of not being cleared; Diallo costed KU a fair chunk of change, created a huge distraction and the benefit was minuscule, as we all know

  • With Sexton going to Bama and KU not really in the Young race I’m more intrigued by next year’s back court than the front court. I think you can certainly succeed in the front court starting a SO Udoka and Lightfoot with a RSSR Coleby as the primary back-up. Not a lot of skill, but highly active. The back court though, we are looking at starting Garrett and the back-ups are complete unknowns at this time. Likely kids not even on the radar unless the staff can turn MJ Walker.

This is assuming all possible early pro candidates (Bragg, Svi, Graham, Jackson) leave.

Can the Indiana game get here already? :p

  • @BShark

Don’t forget that KU also has 6’-10" Evan Maxwell next year…

  • @BShark

If Preston had no issues I’d be playing a different tune. When we have to think of all the reasons why it might be positive to still be after him, you know its not a great situation to begin with.

I find it frustrating that our Coach, as good of a man as he is puts his efforts into recruiting these kids with red-flags. It just seems so off character for him to continually chase them and hope for the best. Most of the time its not a stretch to say the one’s with issues are probably not good fits for KU. Obviously we’ve gotten our fair share of guys with unique circumstances (Traylor, B-Mac) who came from nothing and Diallo who was picked on by a broken system. The success rate has payed off but I don’t get the sense Preston is one of those kids. He’s bounced High Schools every year mostly for no reason then being a by-product of today’s privileged. He left school in California after losing a game and rumors he was going to lose his eligibility. He then appeared at Prime Prep (which was a sham and kept him eligible) and then API (same situation) and now heads to Oak Hill in a strategic move to help his eligibility concerns.

Overall, I feel you here. I think if he had no issues, he’d be going to UK or Duke tbqh. I also don’t think KU would be going after him if Ayton was on board.

I honestly don’t think Preston is even a great fit for KU. Bit of a black hole, and thinks he is a wing. Doesn’t like to get dirty down low. That said at this point Self can’t turn him down if he wants to come here though.

  • @BShark

Good additional points, he is a talent but is he the right talent. And the position we seem to be in, is desperation for talent. He reminds me of the Morris twins, more specifically Marcus with his inside/out ability but would he be helpful or out for himself (which seems to be a popular scouting report on him). And if all was true, eligibility nightmare, character issues why are we chasing him?

  • I’d take Preston and Wooten both. Preston was sporting KU gear at late night - cool with me. And I live on Wooten St. so why not?

  • @dylans

Wooten seems to have seriously interest. I can see why he would, he signed with Nevada and now has one of the best teams in the land after him.

I’m not sure he’s anywhere close to an impact signing but we’ll need bodies and his video’s seems to have a good amount of athleticism that can be worked with.

  • I’m hooting for Wooten!!!

  • Sexton is signing tomorrow and it sounds like the coach is making a final push to change his mind. I’m not going to hold my breath, but everyone had Trump counted out last night and Ayton singed here or was it Kentucky. Guess I better check the crystal ball.

The article covers Sexton, Young, Preston, https://basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/news/signing-day-blog-five-star-young-planning-to-wait-it-out

  • I’ve been saying it off and on for awhile, but KU was never the leader for any of the players committing in the fall with the exception of Ayton who surprised most people by not going with KU.

The reason why Self struggles with fall commits is because there’s usually too many question marks with the roster in the fall. The roster questions usially start to clear up in January nd February, so KU usually has a much better shot at spring signees anyway.

  • @Ralph UMM ya why don’t you do that sparky, get back with us let us know what ya found out rotflmmfao, I’ll be waiting. - - - - - can hardly wait. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 I’ve been saying that for a few months now. I don’t think any of the top talent will sign till they know or have a better idea what Bragg and Graham are going to do. Febuary, March time frame.

As with Ayton you never know what’s going to happen. Just a little glimmer of hope for Sexton

  • @Ralph thx, sparky! Jk

  • @Crimsonorblue22 ya thanx sparky just joking jkn jkn jkn lmao, just jkn just jkn, just jkn, just jkn lmao, just jkn lots and lots of yucks lots and lots of yucks, just jkn, just jkn lmao, just jkn

I’d love to see Self/the staff close hard on Wooten. He has said the only visit he knows he will take for sure is KU, so there is that.

As far as impact, he recently said he plans to redshirt his first year. Also it’s apparently possible that he commits and then enrolls at the semester.

He was drumming up hits. Overall though, I think he’s a good guy.

  • Sexton is a tough miss, fit Self’s style extremely well. Bama has been on him forever though. Same with Wake and Chaundee. Too bad KU couldn’t close in the same situation (Ayton).

  • @BShark

I think that is what is most frustrating about recruiting for KU.

  • @BShark well, on a positive note, at least he’s not going to UK or Duke. Alabama probably won’t be much of a threat nationally next year.

They should be good. We are about to find out a lot about Avery Johnson as a coach.

Just like Richards to UK this has been done for a looooooong time.

  • KU never really recruited Trent or Knox because the staff knew it was a waste of time.

  • @BShark

Did not say KU was recruiting him, just reporting the ESPN Recruit Special…Sexton is next…

  • I was just mentioning it because early on I believe KU popped up as preliminary interest. But obviously not heavily involved of course.

  • Sexton to Alabama…not much of a surprise…
