  @approxinfinity Daily thread post for 2/20 The Turnover bug. Headed into the last 5 games of the conference season, our guys seemed to have shed the turnover bug. Since the Baylor game one month ago, they haven’t turned the ball over more than 11-12 times. According to Kenpom, the DI average for TO’s per 100 possessions is 18.5. We are now at 19.3. Earlier this season we were at least 2 points higher than the DI ave. So we are trending down, which is a good sign going into March and the madness that follows. Wiggins seems to be handling the ball better, which is good. So is Mr Selden. We need those two to be tight with the ball and not give it away in the tournaments. Embiid is also shown improvement in the TO area. He is passing better out of double teams and he can put the ball on the deck better to dribble out of them or beat his man to the rim with a slick move. He looked pretty well healed up that last game. Im certain he is still getting treated for his injuries. Whatever he did to tweak his back, that’s not something that will just go away in a day or two. But, he looked good out there. Him and Wiggins were our best players at TT. For a good run in March, we need them to be consistently strong like that. The big question remains though, will this team be able to keep a team like Florida or Syracuse or SDSU on the ropes long enough with their powerful offense to beat them in the ncaa’s? Defense. This teams defensive rating per Kenpom is higher than any Bill Self coached team. Even though they kept TT from scoring more than 63 points, it was a 53 possession game! Something like 1.17 PPP. We out scored them, we didn’t beat them defensively. That is worrisome headed into March. I like our guys’ chances to make a Final Four run but they will have to lock teams down AND out score them. Not one or the other. ps. Approx, can you move this to the current dates thread when you see this. please?

  @ralster “Syracuse excellence in zoneD: Dedication & practice.” And very specific recruiting. Boeheim goes after very specific players to fill each position. He may not be the very best recruiter in the game, but he knows what he wants and every player he goes after is specific to a role in that defense. As far as meeting those goals… I’d put him in the top 5 of top recruiters.

  Rush was a greater player than Simien, because he was the hub player of a national champion. @jaybate 1.0 I’d like you to expound on this logic a bit. On the surface, I’m not sure I agree. I loved Brandon Rush – he was a key player on a team that made an amazing run – but that doesn’t justify his jersey unless we change the rules substantially. I’d like to know what rule could be devised to allow his jersey without adding at least a half dozen others at the same time. Personally, I like the select number of jerseys hanging in the rarified air of AFH. Adding more jerseys too quickly dilutes the remarkable feat that each jersey represents.

  @jaybate 1.0 “If they insist on having a dunk contest, then continually raise the basket until only one person left can dunk.” Now your talking! I’ll get excited when a player learns to run up to the goal and do a front flip in the air and stuff the ball with his feet! Now that is special and deserves some kind of trophy! Dunks are only magical in games… when it counts. Like when there is a defender involved! Hard to beat the professor of dunk… Dr. J! His under-the-goal-and-come-out-the-other-side-and-finger-roll beats anything I watched the other night! …and it wasn’t even a dunk! There was the one dunk from Jordan when he took off before the free throw line and seemed to float in the air… that was pretty special. I watched some kind of techie show where they studied his dunk and showed calculations proving he didn’t float. It must be a special dunk if techies get involved!

  @wissoxfan83 So, what I would do in this case, since it seems like you want to start a thread about a particular article, is create a new thread entitled: Wiggins Highlight video and other freshmen as well Then put the text you wrote under it as the body of post, including the url, with something like Here’s the link to ESPN. Then create a link on a the daily threads thread like this, using the markdown syntax, and replacing the url in this link with the link of the article you’re aiming at (here it’s www.google.com, but thats because I dont know what the url to your post would be until after you create it): ##Wiggins Highlight video and other freshmen as well -@wissoxfan83## Interesting to me is there are no jump shots for Wiggins. All drives to the hoops, several not terribly impressive in my view. I watched Parkers highlights, he had a bit more substance to his, although his top play was in a blue-white scrimmage, so that shouldn’t really count. Of course being ESPN, maybe they can even control these vids to make one look better than another. Normally, I’d say a link to a news story would be more appropriate for the News Digest thread, but the exception would be if you think its a good conversation starter on its own and you want it to be its own thread. That seems to make sense for this one.

  I think the point about Perry stepping outside and hitting the jumper (not necessarily a 3 pointer) when he is matched up against a bigger guy is a great one. I have often yelled at the TV for him to do just that. If he does that a few times, he then might be able to use his quickness and drive right around some of the bigger guys. I think Embiid is the one key (if forced to pick one) to our success. However, teams will double him. He has to be able to continue to learn to properly handle the double and we have to make teams pay for that. I think he / we will.

  I loved the overall team energy in this game. We were just chatting in here if they could become more of an open court team. The TCU game was a kind of hybrid version of open court. We picked up the pace considerably and often scored in what I classify as a secondary break (anytime the defense hasn’t set yet). I know we accomplished all this at home against the worst team in our league… but at least we accomplished it and got a taste of what our future can be if we bring a different mindset (and strategy) into games. Even though TCU offered little defensive resistance, we still had to come out there and push the pace beyond what was our previous comfort level and then execute. This was a good opponent to try this strategy, and hopefully we will take some confidence away from it and bring the same amount of energy into future games. It will be tougher to execute this style of game away from home and against tougher opponents… but we have the talent to do it. And if we maintain a high level of confidence it won’t be so incredibly hard to do it against better teams. That was a fun game to watch, and if my memory serves me right this was the first game in a long time we really mashed our opponent. We didn’t let off their throats the entire game. Even our walk-ons performed admirably. I hope Self is just bluffing on Embiid’s return for Tech. I’d like to see us have to win on the road without him. Embiid gives the rest of our guys a sort of security blanket that doesn’t help them stay motivated. It would be nice to have a few games without him and let them build on that motivation… long enough to establish a pattern. Plus… we need him fresh for March! What we experienced Saturday closely connected to the expectations many of us have for this team. Amazing how much better they look when they all keep a high-revved motor! Now we have to learn to play that way against better opponents. Not a hard adjustment… mostly mental.

  I can’t believe the response on the subject of green! Maybe we should have an ongoing thread that is for everything outside of basketball. I definitely appreciate all the great advice in here… looking forward to spring so I can try out some of these great ideas!

  @Kapone2323 I agree that Wiggins was a great get for us and that he will help us compete for a title this year and will help with future recruiting once he becomes a stud in the NBA. Wiggins could finish better and he could pass more, no question. The thing he does best is plays tough D. If the rest of our team played D like Wiggs we would probably be looking at 1 or 2 losses instead of 6. Our D will be what makes the difference in March.

  I must say, by resting Embiid, Coach Self restored my faith that he will do what’s the best for his players. Playing hurt for the college may win the coaches, the school and fans games, but it may also shorten the players’ playing career in the long run. It’s not for the best interest of the players. When a coach says he has the players’ best interest, but still plays the players hurt, it simply shows the coach has no integrity. The coach is ultimately responsible for his players just like a parent is for his/her children. I’d never put my son in harms way and I expect the coach the same.
