  I’d like a true 5 shot blocker to IMPROVE our perimeter D. Think if Devonte could feel comfortable applying a little more pressure or even gambling in the passing lanes a little more often. He has great instincts and quick hands. He could average 6 pts a game on fast breaks alone! Remember when he picked VanVleets pocket? He picked a couple of passes late in the year too. Just think if he knew that even if he got beat, there would be someone behind him to back him up. How aggressive could he be? That is my dream. I don’t follow recruiting enough to know if that guy exists. I am thinking though with our more experienced perimeter our D will be improved. Self always talks about helping the helper, and I think our guys were maybe starting to figure that out at the end of the year, even if they were a bit slow with it. Did I just read 17 of 18 McD AA in the final four were on 2 teams? I knew it was bad, but dang…

  @jaybate-1.0 I googled him and all I could find, yesterday, he had some crushed tissue-never heard of a hip injury referred in that way. It did say it was arthroscopic surgery. 3-5 months recovery.

Patterson has zeroed in on Smart since firing Rick Barnes last weekend after 17 seasons. Smart, 37, has been among the hot candidates for several high-profile jobs since leading VCU to the 2011 Final Four. Smart’s teams have won at least 26 games each of the past six seasons. Barnes’ Texas teams won three Big 12 titles and made 16 NCAA Tournament appearances. But Texas hasn’t advanced past the first weekend of the tournament since 2008.   @Crimsonorblue22 I meant by keeping 2 unfilled scholarships this past year. We should at least gotten one more guy but we couldn’t have predicted conner would chicken out.

What I try to do is assume that in this complicated and not very transparent (to fans anyway) D1 environment that what goes on is probably legal, because there is so much money at stake and so much money to hire good lawyers to find technically legal exploits of the rules. For example, I try to believe that everything going on with recruiting including the anomalies are legal, whether or not they are asymmetric in their effects. I try to leave the illegal stuff to the authorities because I am just a fan.

  @REHawk Yeah, but then if he kills it in the combine, he could be right up there again. The kid is a stud. I mean, I think of him as being right in between Wigs and Ben as far as talent and athleticism.

  @jaybate-1.0 One thing about you jb is that you don’t sway from your loyalty or conviction. Sometimes I question my loyalty & commitment to Self - after a horrible loss - but you always stay true to Self. That’s admirable & hard to find these days. A real true friend Self has in you.

  @wrwlumpy This came up earlier in the discussion. Do you think Self has the same spark he had back in '08? I don’t think he quite has that spark… but I think that is just part of human nature. He’s already won it. I know coaches say the second trophy feels as good as the first… but that’s like saying the first time you made whoppee wasn’t something extra special. I see a fire in a guy like Gregg Marshall… that dude is on a mission, probably to achieve what the rest want, a NC. I think if Mario didn’t hit that shot in '08 and Self still hadn’t won one, that game with the Shockers would have looked completely different. You would have seen TWO coaches standing up and coaching up their players all game instead of just one. I think coaches that have won it have an advantage in some areas. First… it looks pretty good on their resume. But also they have a certain ease to them because they are just going back for seconds (or thirds, or whatever). I also think they are at a disadvantage because they are being challenged by coaches that don’t have #1 yet. It is “the chip” for coaches in D1. I’m not saying this to bash Self… or throw out ideas to get rid of him. I’m glad he’s here. But am I the only one that sees a lack of spark in our guys in March most of the time? I’d say it goes all the way back to '08 except for '12… which was a unique set of circumstances with TRob losing his mom. I’d just like to see us as sparked up as the teams we play in March and I’m friggin’ sick of hearing excuses!

  @ParisHawk When I use my mind instead of my heart… I choose #1. But it is hard to do. My guts are still suffering from our recent March loss and from past March disasters. Funny… but I thought we were involved in a study or in a program to try to peak our performance in March. This was part of Self’s answer for last year’s disaster (or was it the year before?) Something having to do with Hudy and getting our guys to their peak physical performance in March. Maybe it is time to look at how to get their minds to peak performance in March? One this one, I prefer mind over body, any day of the week and Sundays!

  @jaybate-1.0 “Why shouldn’t he be the first $100 Million/year coach?” Heck… make him the Governor of Texas! His first job… since Texas can’t deport anyone (and I’m not just talking about Mexican people)… he can at least RECRUIT some 5-star residents for the State! Doctors, scientists, skilled workers…
