I think Pop is going to be pushing hard for Becky Hammon to take over and get her shot at making history. If I had to put money on it, that’s the direction I think the organization will go. And I don’t think HCBS would leave in the middle of the NCAA investigation. Just doesn’t seem like something he would do.

RE: So here is a question after tonight
I’m with D’tae on this one. Yes, HCBS and Long have to say all the right things, but that doesn’t mean KU fans have to be “embarrassed” or ashamed. That’s freakin’ lame.
The punk who stole the ball had it coming from Silvio to volleyball spike his layup attempt. And yes, Silvio deserved a technical for standing over him. That stuff happens every night at all levels of basketball.
And then Silvio was trying to get back on the court when he was assaulted by the crazy KSU bench player in warmups. That dude rushed Silvio and attacked him (wearing glasses no less!! :-D). Silvio was forced to defend himself. Unfortunately, the crazy bench player took the action into the seats behind the basket.
In my opinion, the ONLY thing Silvio did wrong was pick up the chair, which he dropped on his own back once he figured out it was not a good idea. No one took it away from him, as the East coast media on ESPN reported. Jerrance Howard was in the immediate vicinity, but he didn’t pull it from Silvio.
I think Silvio should get five games suspension, max. And that’s it. IF anything else, maybe McCormick gets one game.
Silvio just let his anger get the best of him after being punked twice by two different wildcats. Yes, in hindsight, he no doubt wishes he walked away after power-blocking the guys layup. I totally understand why Self said the things he did in post-game, but I actually think Squeaky’s presser was more appropriate.

RE: Manafort, Assange, Corsi and Stone
@DoubleDD Mueller is just letting Donald stew in his own juices for a while. It’s the best way to keep him in check for now. Mueller knows fully well that it takes 2/3 senate vote to get him completely out. Trump’s striving for full dictatorship. If he were to win the 2020 election, top of his agenda will likely be a constitutional amendment to remove term limits for POTUS. Mueller knows what he’s doing in this situation.
And ironically, the longer Trump stays in office without getting an impeachment, the more it hurts the Republican party. If Donald goes all the way through this four years, the blue wave in 2020 will look like a tsunami compared to the one we just witnessed for the midterm. Republicans need him out of there asap, but they are too intimidated by him to stand up for themselves. Classic budding dictatorship scenario. -
RE: Frank Mason: NBA Starter
I watched most of the Kings/76ers game last night. The Kings were behind by double digits, then Frank came in and dominated the game as the point guard. Dished, lifted his teammates, and also scored a career high of 16. No way the Kings win that game without him. He has some kind of torso injury because he was wrapped and in warmups toward the end of the game. Otherwise, he is their closer and would’ve been in there for the last 5 minutes or so. Funny, I was watching ESPN Sportscenter this morning just to see what they said about the game, because I couldn’t hear the announcers at the sports bar where I was watching, but Frank was constantly in the camera and was no doubt getting compliments from the announcers. But the “highlights” on ESPN didn’t say a word about Frank or show his killer plays. Once again, ESPN was clueless and missing the summarizing that game. Very disappointing ESPN. Frank was a freaking stud out there and toyed with Philly’s guards. And it’s obvious that the King’s bigs love and prefer to play with Frank at the point. Fun to watch!

RE: More bad news
We need a good quality leaker ala White House staffer to get us some info on what is going on in practice! Did Whitman break Lightfoots nose? Did Dedric throw a punch at Dok? I can’t believe the LJWorld staff can’t find out what’s going on in practice. C’mon Keegs and Tait, get the scoop on Slug-gate!

RE: Prego! The Jayhawks are in Italy!
Looks like Billy Preston stands a good chance to win the starting 4 spot. After the game, Townsend had nice comments for Garrett. He did look good, particularly on defense.

RE: At this point , who is playing the best per minutes?
@DanR Dotson totally crushed it in Hawaii and ever since he has been out of sorts (from a leadership standpoint). Remember he and Doke won co-MVP for the tournament. I was in Hawaii for the Maui Invitational, and it was interesting after the game that Doke grabbed the MVP trophy and wouldn’t let Devon have his time with it during the celebration after the game. Dotson made a comment, something like “Doke can have this one”, seemingly conceding the trophy to him because he couldn’t get it back from him anyway.
I’m wondering if that has caused a riff between the two of them. Another thing that has me wondering is I read an article a couple of days ago saying that Dotson hasn’t given Doke a lob since the Colorado game, and that was only one lob, I think.
Maybe there’s nothing to this, but Dotson’s attitude lately is reason for concern. He’s been pretty emotional on the floor too towards other players and the refs. Being verbal towards other players can be a good thing if done from the right perspective, but I’m not so sure Dotson has that nailed down. I also wonder if Doke is becoming the leader of this team now. Agbaji is not taking that on, Dotson is struggling to do it, Garrett is the quiet glue-guy. Maybe Braun will step up? mostly kidding

RE: WSU grudge
@HighEliteMajor You make Bill Self’s case by stating “It would highly energize our fan base.” That fact doesn’t matter because we already have a highly energetic fan base that sells out every game and travels all over the place to watch the Jayhawks play. I was in Maui for the three games there and KU must’ve held 80% of the tickets for each of the three games. I thought surely BYU, who has a campus on Oahu, would snatch up their fair share of tickets… nope. Jayhawk fans muscled their way in and bought them up, got on a plane, and showed up at the games.
Economically, there is no benefit to playing WSU. It’s not going to create more donor funds or get existing donors to give more than they already are.
HCBS is doing such a good job of filling AFH and winning, that until that changes, he’s right in saying that we don’t benefit from playing WSU. If there was some recruiting benefit, maybe, but there just isn’t.

Marcus Garrett
Marcus Garrett had 5 assists in 6 minutes last night! That dudes playing time has got to be on the rise. I didn’t see the game, but if anyone did, please report on how he did. Hopefully it wasn’t all garbage time because of being a pre-season game.

RE: You'd Think This Team was 1-4 Instead of 4-1.
The announcers last night were comparing Josh to Wiggins, and like drgnslayr, I like Josh’s more all-around game much better than Wigs. Also the intangible, Josh seems much more aggressive and willing to be a court leader than Wigs ever did. In the loss to Stanford, that final play where Wigs backed away from taking the last shot and instead deferred to Frankamp, is etched in my brain. Also etched was Bill Self walking off the floor after that game. He was furious (presumably) with Wiggins and tearing into one of the assistant coaches. To be able to hear what he was saying would have been interesting. Doesn’t seem like Josh will pull that same kind of disappearing act. I like this years team a lot and think our bigs will start to produce once we start making it a priority to feed the post. Dok must keep moving forward and getting more and more minutes. His offense and rebounding already look the best of the bigs. His defensive footwork needs some time, but his shot blocking is looking decent. So far, Dok is giving more effort than the others. If he can keep progressing and improving his footwork and defense, we should be ready to dominate conference play.

RE: To your health
Hi Statmachine, I am also a believer in eating properly to prevent and cure diseases. An excellent book is “It Starts With Food” by Dallas and Melissa Hartwig. They recommend eating paleo, that is removing grains from the plate. It’s hard for many because grains are the food that give us that full feeling that us mid-westerners are so addicted to achieving at every meal. They also cite the ease of which we are able to fill our carb tank with a grain based diet. It puts the body in a state of never thinking it needs to burn fat because it can never work through the carb tank to ever get to the point of needing to burn fat. In the book they talk a lot about gut health and solving those problems with what we put on our plates. I have had many positive effects from incorporating ideas from that book.
That’s interesting stuff about pH and viruses, I will look into that.

Self's Motivational Tactics
Have any of you noticed that Coach Self seems to have different ways of motivating the team when it comes to tournament games relative to conference games? Not sure if it’s my imagination or not, but when it comes to tournament time, Self spends a lot of time talking (publicly anyway) about how the team needs to “play loose and with a free mind”.
We rarely, if ever, hear him say something like that during the regular season. Instead, he says things like he did this week where he called out Vick and Bragg in the locker room before the game. During conference he prefers to put pressure on the players in a masterful way so that they are peaking for the difficult road games and turning down the intensity before easy home games. Sorry I don’t have more specific examples to cite here at the moment, but over the years I have noticed a definite shift in his coach-speak when the tournament starts up.
I don’t know if I would call it coddling and I also obviously don’t know if his “play loose” comments are just for the media/public while he is coaching them in the locker room and practice like they are going into Manhattan with the B12 championship on the line. Whichever, he doesn’t seem to be able to get the team anywhere close to the killer instinct that the team possesses both at home and on the road during the regular season.
If somehow Coach Self could get the team to believe that the jerseys on the opposite team read K-State, Baylor, or West Virginia, you can bet many of those disappointing losses in the first or second weekend of the NCAA tournament would have been W’s.
I’ve also noticed that his sideline demeanor changes and is more mild mannered during tournament games. He smiles more at the players and goes easier on them in the huddles. Again, maybe trying to get them to not play “tight” but actually sending the message that it’s OK to lose. During conference games, he almost never smiles and is always chewing someones butt, even if they are winning by 10 points.
Any Sports Psychologists out there?

RE: To your health
@Statmachine What’s the theory behind drinking apple cider vinegar to raise the pH in the bloodstream and organs? Are there other ways to effect pH in the body?
-
Lucas and Svi
Landon Lucas is just plain bad. Bad defense, bad offense, and bad body language. No quickness, no hustle, no emotion, no intensity.
Svi was not aggressive at all. Shied away from driving it. That really hurt us tonight.
That pretty much sums up the WVU loss.

RE: Is this why people like @crimsonorblue and @highelitemajor dislike the KC Star?
I would argue that Huggins is neither a “terrific coach” nor does he possess “one of the country’s great dry senses of humor”. I would characterize him as sarcastic and insulting, but not a person with a witty and dry sense of humor.
-
RE: Prego! The Jayhawks are in Italy!
@Crimsonorblue22 Thank you! Just signed up!

Team of Bigs
OK, so I’m salivating at the thought of Dok, Silvio and Mitch on the floor at the same time. Mitch playing the wing and sliding Svi to the 2-guard with, of course, DG at the point. That’s some serious height and rebounding. Also block city for opponents getting around our tall guards on the perimeter.

RE: Data sez: Bill Self is frickin awesome
Does anyone else think Bill uses the pre-season and to some degree the conference season to manufacture close games and those anxious moments in games where it’s set point and they must get a stop or get a bucket to pull out the victory? This could be why he has more close games than a lot of coaches, and he is VERY good at winning them because his teams have a lot of practice at it.
Specifically, it seems like he loves to tinker with substitutions, especially when the Hawks are on an offensive roll. I don’t think he likes KU to run away with a lot of big victories because he believes that not nearly as much is learned or experienced in a comfortable 15 point victory.
I think he prefers to create those “anxious moments”, as he calls them, late in games because of the mental benefit for the players come tournament time.
One thing I don’t understand is why he changes his use of words for post-season when talking about how the team needs to prepare for the NCAA tournament. Once the Big 12 tournament is over, he says things in the media like… “we need to play loose with a free mind”, etc. I think it actually hurts the team’s attitude when he changes his message prior to NCAA tournament games. I think the team would play better if he would keep the message consistent with prior to a game with K-State or Oklahoma, etc.

@colohawks I vote Doke for a year for sure! If he has improved his short-range shooting even just a little bit, we are talking about a POY candidate.

RE: New Hudy!
After watching Dr. Ramsey Nijem’s interview on Youtube, it’s clear he is a super smart individual who know his industry thoroughly. The way he rattles off names, and describes principles and techniques of his craft like he’s been in the field for 30 years is remarkable no matter what field of business a person is working in.
I’m thinking he’s going to move the needle in a noticeable way once he gets some time with these guys… not only athletically, but more importantly, between the ears on game day. Rock Chalk!!
-
Burn the Red Shirt
Mitch would’ve led the Hawks to victory last night. He is a clear leader when he’s on the floor, and last night, he would’ve outplayed any of our three bigs.
We severely lacked poise against Duke. Mitch would’ve brought that in spades, and led the team to stop peeing down it’s proverbial leg.
On Friday night, we need a WE WANT LIGHT FOOT chant!
-
RE: Funny in a way, me and another just talking about this the other day
Magic Johnson was the ultimate example of leading his team by playing with joy and positive emotion. On the opposite end is Draymond Green, who shows aggressive emotion on the floor - damn annoying if you ask me.
I remember Julian Wright being emotional in a positive way. I still remember him doing that 360 dunk on a break away steal at Mizzou. That’s probably on YouTube somewhere. His smile was infectious.

RE: So here is a question after tonight
There are a lot of false statements going around today. I just watched a video on ESPN where Stephen A Smith said that Silvio accepted a $2500 payment from a booster. No one at his round-table rant knew the truth to correct him that an Adidas rep paid Silvio’s guardian $2500. Smith also said that an assistant coach had to rip the chair from Silvio’s hands. Again, no one corrected him. Our administration needs to defend these players a little bit because they are getting slaughtered in the media.

Garrett's triple-single
http://www2.kusports.com/weblogs/tale-tait/2020/jan/29/ku-junior-marcus-garrett-seems-to-be-clo/
I was a bit surprised to read Coach Self’s brag on Garrett’s performance at the center of the zone. While watching the game, I thought he was too hesitant to shoot it to be totally effective against the zone.
The OSU bigs were backing off of him, and he was still looking to pass rather than take the 10 footer. If I’m not mistaken, I remember him only taking one shot from the center of the zone, which I also think he made.
Marcus needs to shoot that shot more often to be most effective. I thought Kevin Young, Josh Jackson, and Julian Wright were all better than Marcus at playing that zone position. If Garrett can add the shot aspect, he can pass them up.
Am I forgetting any other good zone distributors from past Jayhawks?

RE: Thursday nights starting 5...
@BeddieKU23 I like that starting 5! It’s interesting to get opinions from other people’s perspective. Like you, I think my list would differ from Self’s, but here it is…
Starters: 1 Harris, 2 Agbaji, 3 Garrett, 4 Lightfoot, 5 McCormick
Order off the bench: 5 Wilson, 4 Enaruna, 2 Braun
Closing minutes in a tight game: 1 Harris, 2 Agbaji, 3 Garrett, 4 Wilson, 5 Lightfoot (Harris only if he’s handling pressure well with ball handling, and Lightfoot only if he is stout on D, otherwise swap for Enaruna)
-
RE: July predictions for the upcoming season results
@tis4tim Well said. The last couple of teams have been soft and individual players have disappeared when the going got tough (Braun, Wilson, even Agbaji at times, and Big Dave when he was up against big and athletic power forwards).
This year’s team should have plenty of suitable backups. I think an earlier post said that if anybody gets an attitude (or goes soft) they will be sitting on the bench. If that doesn’t motivate some of these incumbent players with NBA aspirations, nothing will.
I can’t wait to see this team play. And I’ll be disappointed if the roster is the same as last year with just a replacement for Garrett. Let’s see these new guys earn and take some minutes!
-
RE: Cam Martin
Hopefully Ramsey Nijem gets Cam absolutely ripped for next year. If so, he would be a beast down low with also being able to shoot the three. I’d bet we will see quite a transformation in Cam’s physique by Spring.
-
RE: Assistant Coach Roberts was... "soft"
@drgnslayr That lack of fire was what I saw as well. Usually Self would’ve called a timeout or two and tore into them a bit. That’s not Norm’s M.O. He just went to the bench, rather than check the starters in a timeout.
Norm might be a good recruiter, but he’s not a passionate game-day coach. I didn’t see him ever work the refs either.
Just Bill working the refs would’ve been worth 2 points! We got none of that from our coach that day.
-
RE: Kansas starting 5
Coach Self might start players because of seniority and loyalty, but my “crunch time” 5 would be:
Remy (for swag and offense) Yesufu (for passing and defense) Agbaji (for solid defense and 3 point shooting during high pressure situations) J-Dub (for rebounding and defense - not shooting) Big Dave (for offensive versatility and rebounding)
Honorable mention CB: CB tends to underperform in big games against tall athletes. He’s gets his rebounds, but that shouldn’t be his game. He needs to have more swag and be reliable at knocking down big shots in big games. I think his crunch-time minutes need to go elsewhere because he is now an upperclassman and he hasn’t shown the ability to perform come tournament time.
Honorable mention Harris: I love Harris’ game, being so smooth and crafty, but unless he can prove himself during the season that he can be reliable in March, then those crunch-time minutes need to go to Yesufu. Yesufu has already proven himself in March and shown he has the fortitude to handle the pressure of the NCAA tournament.
Honorable mention Martin: Martin is intriguing but it remains to be seen if Coach Self will be able to tolerate a big man shooting threes. It’s something he has never really embraced and over the years has made snide remarks about KU bigs that want to step out beyond the arc. I just don’t see Coach Self changing his colors unless he’s the only one with the hot hand in crunch-time and we had to go with him. Plus, I think Coach Self will inadvertently over-coach the shot right out of Martin.

RE: Opinions needed
So would you create content (podcasts, blogs, video) or just maintain a location for presenting those created by others/media, etc.? I like the idea of podcasts because I love to listen to that stuff while I work in the yard and such. Jayhawk podcasts especially. In my opinion, a good podcast doesn’t have to be professionally produced, polished, or have high profile guests, it just needs to be somewhat entertaining and informative. By the way, is anyone going to Italy?? I was trying to make it but it’s just not coming together for me. We could use some serious commentary from anyone going over there. We have basically a brand new team (even DG will be mostly playing a different role). This would be a perfect time to kick off some amateur podcasts!!
-
RE: One two many beers
Tim Miles is the best young coach in the game right now. He doesn’t get a lot of press right now, but in a couple more years, everyone will have heard of him. I’m not sure he is KU’s type of coach, and Zenger is not enough of a visionary to go after someone like Miles, but he would be an awesome hire.
-
RE: Things could be worse
With all the talk about hot seats, are we about to get our big-man assistant coach back in the Phog? I’m not sure Wake Forest will tolerate another year (record) like this one. No doubt Bill will find a way to get Manning back if he becomes available.
-
RE: One two many beers
@Crimsonorblue22 He was at CSU for 5 years or so and took them from absolutely horrible to the NCAA tournament (beat Mizzou and lost to national champs Louisville in 2013). Before that I think he was at NDSU and was always upsetting D-1 teams.

RE: Isn't It a Little Early for April Fool's Day?
http://collegebasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/07/09/report-naadir-tharpe-to-turn-pro/
Wow, that says a lot about the manner in which he left the team. Doesn’t this have to mean that he had no good options in the East coast?
I’m not buying the statement about not wanting to sit out a year. Going to the D-League is hugely risky behavior in his situation (not regarded as an up and coming talent, and, like the little article pointed out, he was very inconsistent in his time in Lawrence). Also, he was pretty bad at running the point and he is undersized for a 2 guard by pro standards. For these reasons, I think he must have had no decent options. It’s sad but again I think this decision says a lot.
From the lack of options, and that now he states that he doesn’t want to sit out a year, I think we can only conclude that he basically got fired and shown the door by Self. And all of the talk about him wanting to get closer to his daughter in New England was he and Bill saving face. He could end up in any city in the D-league.
Amazing, I don’t think I’ve seen a player basically get fired, or at least not have any options.
As a former Jayhawk, I wish him the best.
-
RE: Isn't It a Little Early for April Fool's Day?
@Crimsonorblue22 I’m just wondering… do you think that was really the plan from the time he left? Or has he exhausted all paths to play for a reputable D-1 school in the Northeast and then decided to go D-league, maybe from an invitation from one of the D-league teams. I still don’t think it’s a given he will make a D-league roster unless he got drafted and was sent to a team by the NBA team.
I’m just curious how the thought process all went down for Naadir. To me, this sounds like a Plan B.

RE: Reality check from the land of Trust in Bill Self
A couple of months ago, I posted the message below about Bill Self’s change in demeanor come tournament time. It seems appropriate to bring this up again now that we are repeating our Groundhog Day for KU fans.
In light of the comments below, if the game against Oregon was a conference game, say against Oklahoma or KSU, Bill Self would’ve called an early time out and tore into the team for the sluggish start. Instead, he coddled them and didn’t coach them the same as he does during conference.
Previous Post:

RE: Rumble in the Jungle....
I’m not a fan of Huggins, personally. He is a classic bully on the sidelines, constantly berating the refs and complaining about calls… always the victim, his team is. I’ve never seen refs so afraid to make calls as when watching Huggins teams play. They tend to swallow their whistles and allow a ton of arm slapping at the ball, which they end up letting go. Huggins complaining rubs off on his players and they complain to the refs constantly on the floor. Huggins is also a sore loser as he’s shown so many times throughout his career. Even last night he had a sneer for Legerald Vick in the handshake line. Not an ounce of class in Huggins. He has to play the gimmick style of pressing, ala Mike Anderson, because of his inability to coach the game any other way. He doesn’t value the offensive prowess of a well-coached big man. As a result, he will never attract a NBA caliber big man to WVU as long as he stays with the press Virginia gimmick. The dude’s just bad for the sport of basketball. I think Bill Self buddies up to him because Bill knows how to beat guys even before they play. Sort of like Bill coaches his bigs to score before receiving the ball in the post.
-
RE: Team of Bigs
I definitely see what you guys are saying. But, I would be totally glued to the TV if that line-up were to ever be given a go. I think Mitch could handle the three position with his active legs and three point shooting potential. Is he still shooting 50% from trey? Out of maybe 6 tries?
-
RE: Stumpy denies everything.
I watched his press conference, he could not make a statement as strong as that without it being true. No lawyer would advise him of that. Rather, if he was truly guilty, he would go away and have his lawyer make statement for him, ala Rick Pitino.
So, that means that either ESPN or the federal government is going to get sued by U of A. Or perhaps both. I read that ESPN is standing by their story, so does that mean that the Feds lied to ESPN about the wire tap, or fabricated a wire tap?
This is going to get very interesting!!

RE: "We’re not very big."
@KUSTEVE I totally agree with you Steve. I was just logging in to start a thread with the same thoughts. Cry me a river Bill, “we’re not very big”, “Our best passer doesn’t have anyone to throw it to right now”. We are one of the “have’s” and not one of the “have-not’s”. I watch a lot of ball around the country and watch what other teams do with far less talent that we have. Steve- I think your lineup is good. David would develop if Bill would leave him out there for more than a few minutes at a time. He’s been told he’s supposed to “bring energy off the bench”, so he thinks he needs to be running around crazy when he’s out there. He needs to settle down a bit and use his energy more wisely, which I think he would quickly learn to do. Marcus Garrett needs to play ahead of Vick and Grimes. Get down to a 7 man rotation with Vick and Moore being the subs. Mitch could get spot minutes if we have foul trouble. Hopefully Bill gets this figured out soon so we don’t waste David’s freshman season on the bench.
-
RE: Light at the end of the tunnel....
I don’t think there is much of a chance that KU gets penalized because of Silvio’s situation with his guardian. Since I’m currently at work, and I"m sure many of you are too, I’ll be brief.
If KU (Coach Self, Townsend, etc.) had a tendency to act outside of the rules, then they would have played Billy Preston after his automobile situation. The fact that they sat Billy all year when they needed him on the court so badly shows that KU’s program was and is going by the rules. So, I will bank on the idea that they had no idea about Silvio’s guardian taking money from Adidas.
Did Coach Townsend have an inappropriate conversation with an Adidas rep about Zion Williamson’s recruitment? Yes, absolutely. But that doesn’t mean that KU accepted any benefit form that one recruiting situation. However, Duke may have through Nike.
The Billy Preston situation speaks volumes about KU’s principles and practices. Billy was the Jayhawk in the coal mine, and the Jayhawk flew out of the mine unscathed Rock Chalk!
-
RE: Tristan Enaruna is a Jayhawk
As someone noted above, it’s interesting how (in his highlight reel) he shoots many of his floaters left handed. Can’t remember ever seeing that before in a college player. How nice that must be as a player! It would be super hard to defend him when he’s attacking the basket. I’m super excited to see him in action!
-
RE: Wilson to Kansas
From what I’ve seen on Youtube, Jalen seems to play low to the floor. For being 6-8, supposedly, he definitely doesn’t attack the rim… ever. He’s going to need some training, if one can even be trained to play above the rim. That might be more instinct and not come very easily. When he’s attacking the paint, he tends to go low and try a wild shot off the glass. Against those high schoolers, he should be going up and dunking it. Also, he doesn’t have much elevation on his jumper at all. More of a set shot.
I don’t see him getting significant minutes this year. He will be too easy to guard and will get his shot blocked at the next level (except for open threes).
