It’s seeming the lightbulb is at least warming up for Rylan.
He was way more decisive on the catch.
You can tell the coaching emphasis is ball movement and player movement.

@BigBad Self having zero accountability for this roster is laughable. We have 3 or 4 years guy…… they SUCK! We gave away 2 good recruits to get Hunt that would be 3 year players right now and are better than Hunt/KJ most nights. Hunt was lazy as hell last year but still brought back. AJ Storr is on is 3rd school in as many years and a known to half ass it. Self wanted him and he’s here.
“ZERO accountability”
What do you want? Him to be fired today? Send back his salary? What exactly? You don’t think the guy is embarrassed? He’s insanely competitive but all of his characteristics that make him a great coach don’t fit the transfer portal and soft kids era.
I’m not naive and understand the end is near. However, I believe he deserves more respect then what some people are showing.
This is a coach who built the program around developing 3 and 4-year guys and mixing in stars. He’s done this for TWENTY years. The 3 and 4 year guys were pushed hard and the strong survived and then thrived. So now we are expecting him to change and get guys turned around in 6 months? Not going to happen. You can call that “archaic” if you want that’s fine. Or you can get into playing shooters over bigs. None of that matters. What matters is the game is now about mercenaries and you need AAU style coaches. 1-2-3 Family chants are an absolute joke. 100% of these kids would bail on their “family” for a bigger payday.

Self mailed in the game starting 3 bigs. That was a new low for him
It’s looking like 2 straight seasons of Self mailing it in after it looks like the team doesn’t have it. Pretty embarrassing given his wage.
What about the players “wage”? GTFO! Self at least has earned his over YEARS of work and success. He’s proven he cares. These kids have proven NOTHING.
Those boys straight up quit! I’m sure glad they are getting paid now.
@dylans said in Fair Weather Fan: You need the program builders in place first.
The transfer rules have made the coaching staff and the players themselves too impatient to stick around and DEVELOP.
The whole thing is a mess. If the transfer rule remains, the most “successful” coaches will be like AAU coaches. They will be the best at identifying the mercenaries that will fit together well for one season.
Once Bill Self is gone so am I. I’m 50 years old. I played JUCO in the early 90s, watched the heyday of college ball, and saw Kansas win 3 titles. I won’t miss what all of this has become.
@SlimShaddy54 said in KJ Adams:
@BeddieKU23 100 % correct, they feel they haven’t been given a decent chance - - now here is the time for them to prove themselves, show that they can.
People who say this have never coached a day in their life.
Do you understand the “first or second mistake” you want Self to let them play through is more like the 100 and 101st mistake Self has seen from them including practice?
All you "The game has passed Bill Self by"guys…HAHAHAHAHAHAhah
@nuleafjhawk I’m a chargers fan so I can tell you it’s becoming obvious chiefs fandom arrogance and rediculous expectations are leaking over into Kansas basketball.
@kuballin10 Ok man. I for one NEVER bought into the #1 ranking. I also understand you don’t win titles year after year, hence I don’t get upset like you do.
Man, this thread…
People bashing Self and somehow it’s all on him?? These fn players get PAID NOW. How about STFU, quit pouting, and do what the coach says? You know the coach who knows what it takes to win.
I made my third trip to Kansas for the UNC game from my home in Ohio this season, mostly because my son who’s 14 enjoys it. The Fieldhouse and Coach Self are the main draws now because the players change yearly in the NIL era so it’s not for them anymore. Seeing Mayo, the local kid, have a great game that night was refreshing. I’ve loved college basketball for a long time, but all of this is getting toxic and tiring. Once Self retires I’ll probably lose interest.
My son and I made a last minute trip from Ohio for this game. Our first time back since 2020 senior night. It was an awesome night in the fieldhouse. Such a great environment.
That NBA teams think he is ready surprises me. Furphy absolutely sucked in the second half of pretty much every game he played at KU.
While Furphy at times completely outclassed the entire roster, if he truly leaves he will be the least accomplished OAD in KU history. Furphy helped KU to its worse record since they were on probation in 1989 and he did absolutely nothing at an elite level. I’d love to watch him continue to develop at KU, but if he’s going to go pro I wish him the best in Europe or wherever he ends up.
The NBA draft is like the MLB draft now. It is all based on potential, not what they are currently.
As far as the “the least accomplished OAD in KU history” , Cheick Diallo will never be matched!
KJ somewhat reminds me of a more athletic Darnell Jackson. Self loves those type of guys no matter their non-fit to the modern game.
Big 12 is a step up from the Summit League. We had high hopes for Timberlake as well. People that look at shooting percentage and assume it translates, have never played the game. Every level change is an increase in game speed. Being sped up ruins the flow you are used to in your shot. I’d bet only the special ones can make the jump in levels seamlessly in one season. Let’s hope Mayo can!

@mayjay I’m still mad we played UCLA in California in 2007.
I bitch about that at least 2x a year!
I thought UNC got screwed this year. Arizona is the 2 in the west.
I love everything Juan has done for KU but 5 years is too much. Imagine Tyshawn Taylor getting a 5th year. It would be more of the same. But he is one of Self’s favorites so he’s not going anywhere.
@kjayhawks said in BYU Thread:
@BeddieKU23 I’m gonna ask a Honest question here, is this Bill Selfs worst coaching job? This team has 2 all-Americans likely, 3 draft hopefuls and a Cousy award finalist. In 2019 we had no talent and 2015 we had super young talent. I think this team may end up worse than those 2, tho on paper should beat those teams by 25 points.
What has always made Self’s “bad talent” teams still win was the continuity of players in the program who learned to play defense. Even if a guy wasn’t that talented on offense by the time he saw significant playing time he was already molded by Self and co. to bring it on the defensive end and understand team defense. Like Self has always said, “You have to be able to win games while not hitting shots”. Four players(Hunter, Timberlake, Furphy, Elmarko) have played significant playing time this year are first-year guys at Kansas. Add that to the lack of a consistent three ball on offense and this is the result.
It’s time…and maybe this lights a fire in Elmarko. ZERO shot attempts in a road conference game was unacceptable.
I had a great time. Indiana fans are always gracious and really know the ball. It was a great atmosphere even though the students’ last day of classes was Friday. My spoiled son has been to Allen(2020 Senior Night), Rupp(last year), and now Assembly Hall.
Let me know. My son(13) and I will probably get there around 11:00
Yep…I live just North of Dayton Ohio so its only 2 and a half hours away.
Well, I bought tickets for Saturday’s game so I guess I’m officially BACK!!!
LOL

I thought it was just me. Honestly I lost a lot of interest when Mahomes started playing for the Chiefs. I only have so much sports attention to go around.
I’m a Chargers fan so I have only enough sports pain to go around…LOL
Kansas was usually my respite.

I think this is kind of a wild take. We are a year and a half removed from a bunch of kids (that were 3 and 4 star recruits) from the KC area winning a national championship at KU! Two of them are starters on this years team! I’m also pretty sure that Ochai, McCormack, and Jalen Wilson all graduated. Dajuan Harris and KJ Adams will graduate, and if Christian Braun hasn’t already, he will.
I actually think that team has made all of this worse for me. It seems like it was officially the end of it and we at least got to see it culminate in a championship. It was awesome and it’s never going to be like that again
@FarmerJayhawk Nice job labeling an entire sport’s history by bringing up maybe the top recruit of all time. Obviously, there has been a wink-and-nod type of thing with the absolute top guys forever. I’m talking about recruiting kids that actually want a degree, and actually love the school. I’m aware you cant fill a roster full of Lightfoots and local studs like Braun and Ogbaji but it would be nice to have a few.
If Im going to watch pro sports, Id rather watch the best of the best and have moved towards NBA.
This is the first year in almost 40 that I’ve lost interest. I didn’t even watch the Kentucky game. I really like Harris but other than him I just don’t care. This isn’t COLLEGE basketball anymore. None of these kids actually care about the school, the team, a free education, or anything else outside of their bank account. Am I supposed to cheer for Dickenson this year because Kansas outbid everyone for him? Am I supposed to follow “recruiting” which now is just a kid deciding on Nike or Adidas and THEN picking a school? Am I supposed to cheer for kids who would bolt on this team for a better payday in a heartbeat?
I’m sure I will watch Maui because I’m off work this week but I’ve just lost the feeling I used to have for this team and this sport.
This is a MASSIVE low point for me with this transfer/NIL stuff. If it is like this yearly I’m going to have a real hard time watching this.
I think NBA will have to start looking at this. It could be long term tampering if you think about it. If when a free agent Cuban would have an edge.
Indiana Fans are hoping Mark Cuban made a deal…wild times in “college” basketball

We act like a lot of these athletes couldn’t get an academic scholarship if sports wasn’t in the picture.
I’d be willing to bet 90% of D1 basketball players couldnt.
So its a theory that Self is hard on new guys? It’s a theory that most first year guys struggle under him? Again most gloss over some of this because there is always a vet who steps in and fills the void. This year there won’t be any of those so it’s going to be REALLY interesting.
@madmax said in Bye Bye Ernest:
The plus I see is Kansas won’t have down years anymore. No more wondering and waiting for a window to have a great team. Each coming year will be National Champions or bust. How painful has it been going into a year knowing the team has a glaring weakness that inevitably will result in an early tourney ouster.
What proof do we have that Coach Self can navigate this many new guys? The key to his success has always been guys who have been in his system a few years. Self is EXTREMELY difficult to deal with for first year guys. Look how many freshman can’t deal with him. Look how Remi had issues for a lot of his one year. It’s always worked because it was a weeding out process that led to every year having a mentally strong team filled with guys who withstood it all.
People are looking at all the incoming guys and assuming they will all be great. Self’s history proves that about 75% of newcomers will either struggle with his demands and/or won’t earn his trust enough to garner playing time. On top of that we now have only TWO guys left to help the new guys navigate it.
Of course it’s possible Self truly has softened. I just don’t believe it.
It’s tough enough to cheer for obvious one and dones. Going to be tougher to cheer for 25 year old men who will only be in a Kansas uniform for a year over a 19 year old who WANTS to be there for 4 years.
It is what it is, I get it but I dont have to like it
Graduated High School in 2017…this covid and transfer stuff is dumb
@BeddieKU23 I was at the KU UK game. UK fans behind me kept screaming to get Wheeler out of the game…LOL
Every time a team loses in the tournament its:
The coach sucked - didnt adjust, didnt call timeout etc. The players are not athletic enough.
The funny thing is, it always and I mean always comes down to making shots. The collective tournament has a 3 point % of 30. It’s not coaching or athleticism, its shot making.
@BShark Born in San Diego but moved to Dayton Ohio when I was 10.
For all you Chief fans you guys are especially spoiled. I’m a KU and Charger fan. I’m 49 years old and have seen ZERO titles as a Charger fan but THREE as a KU fan so I definitely feel spoiled there!
