This Game Will Start Eventually I Guess - Game Thread

Better than Robin and Brook as in the Lopez brothers.
-
1372 yards of combined offense for OU and WVU…
-
Williams needs to get his Carmel corn back from Barnes
-
@JayHawkFanToo Them Lopez brothers are still in the league aren’t they? I hope we can say the same about the Lawsons.
-
I like dedrics kick after his dunk
-
@BShark find out about that boot. Ok?
-
Now we have to wait 8 days to see KU play a terrible Stanford team. Stanford is the kind of team you hope to let Grimes get his confidence back against. Kenpom ranking in the same range as Vermont and Lousiana.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 Schofield’s dad was in the navy
-
Hopefully these 2 games got Dedric going, he looked so much better. Not driving into 3 guys and getting swatted repeatedly.
-
Oh, and he was born in the same hospital in England that Prince Harry and William were born in.
All the trivia I know. I lived in Knoxville for ten years so I sort of still follow the Vols a bit.
-
@BShark How much are we going to lose to Stanford by?
-
@DanR impressed
-
Whew… Great win. The team is still putting the pieces together. But good enough to win some big games on big stages. Dotson looked great tonight. Grimes will have his day. Awesome to see D Lawson show what he can do in this tourney. KJ also got some meaningful minutes. And props to Moore who was able to competently manage the game to give others a break. This squad is a work in progress, but what a great bunch of raw parts.
Lots of weapons on this team. They can win playing a variety of styles.

Bill takes another one away from Barnes. And so it goes…

Yep, Grimes just needs to find himself. Maybe thinking too much right now. Beating a top 5 teams basically without Grimes is HUGE. Plus Doke fouled out in 17 minutes or so… Just a great, tough team win.

@bskeet I’ve been saying all year so far that Dotson is better than Grimes. I’ve also said no way hes a OAD at this point. Looking at previous OAD guards hes not even close.

He really isn’t but he has been DEAD SET on leaving. Will be interesting to see if that changes. He has good parents and they also don’t particularly need the $ I believe.
-
Both Grimes and Dotson are excellent freshmen. I think they may be the best true freshmen duo since Wiggins and Embiid… not as talented-- and not nearly as impactful as those two were because we don’t need them to be given that Vick and D Lawson are seasoned and talented scoring machines. But there wasn’t much around Wigs and Embiid. Tarik Black (sr) and Perry Ellis (so) were it.
So I like to think about these freshmen improving throughout the year and becoming more confident with the safety net of Vick, Lawson and Azubuki. It should be a team with a high ceiling as the season winds down.
-
@bskeet Grimes could be a solid freshman but he’s got to figure it out from an effort stand point. That’s my main issue with him, we have some depth this so the choice is his. I’ve said for years I’d rather have a 3 or 4 star guy that goes hard than a 5 that stands.
-
Grimes was so good in the USA games, he’ll get there.
-
Maybe Grimes hasn’t figured out the structure yet. Maybe he’s better with less structure where he can create?
-
@Gorilla72 I think you’re exactly right. Many times guys struggle offensively when getting to college because other teams play excellent team defense. Team offense is designed to combat good team defense.
Maybe I’m wrong, but I see a more complete player as a freshman with Grimes than I did with Selden (who seems to be a good comparison player). I do think it is simply making the adjustment to the college game where real defense is played. Sometimes a lot of things get jammed into guys’ heads by Coach Self and it takes some time to start playing and not thinking. Things it takes for the team to succeed. All things we’ve heard before. Guys have to persevere.
Selden seemed like a work in progress for quite a while. It took Oubre some time too. Newman was completely out of sync until well into the second half of the season. All three NBA level talent. I think Grimes will get it to click.
By the end of the season, none of us should be surprised if Grimes is our best all around player, just as we had imagined. I actually think it will happen much quicker with Grimes. He’s got a lot of good things in the tool box. Maybe more than the other three I mentioned. The struggle is many times a good thing.
-
@HighEliteMajor I think he has the nba body already, like Selden, and similar handles and athleticism. I think he has an edge on mentality and it way ahead of freshman Selden onhis shot. Remember Selden took a Summer to fix his shot. No need with Grimes. I’m drinking the Kool aid

I thought Moore could shoot the rock? 3-10 with several layups not even close. If that’s the shooting we get out of Charlie I’ll take Garrett’s intangibles any day.
-
I was hollering for Svi in the corner, but it wasn’t to be. I really miss that lights out shooting. I don’t see anyone on the team that can make threes like that guy did as a Sr. Looks like shooting will not be the strength it has been the last couple years. Here’s hoping to see the defensive effort they started the second half against Marquette with more often.

My original thoughts after watching them play at their previous school after announcing they would transfer to KU is that Moore and KJ suck. I was hoping with a year in the program even not playing that would help…
I made quite a few negative posts about Moore which got me called out by the posters one would expect. I have called him a slightly better Tharpe and I stand by that.
I think @Crimsonorblue22 has come around on this subject.
-
True, but even Svi never went 8 for 8 and then another 7 for 12 the next game… Vick was a machine earlier. Very unexpected but most welcome and I’m sure hoping he finds that happy place many more times this season!
-
Good to have a Tharpe… Coming off the bench.

Exactly. Even Tharpe’s SO year that was fine, but when you have to play a Tharpe 30 minutes well…we’ve seen the results. Moore is obviously very short and has a low release point which compounds the problem.
This is why we really need Dotson back next year. Dotson is the key to next year’s team being a contender.
-
You’re right that his numbers suck, but I’ve seen flashes of confidence and idk, there’s just something about the way he plays that makes me think the light is going go on one day for him.
Then again, I thought that about Sam last year too.
Then again, I sure didn’t think that about BIFM freshman year.
Hard to tell from such s small sample I guess.
-
My thoughts from the game last night:
- DOTSON IS A DUDE. No stage too big for this fella. Even a blue-collar physical Rick Barnes Tennessee team could rough him up enough. They sure tried though.
- Doke is the most important player on this team. His dominance when he is in the game is truly only able to be appreciated when he is not in the game…
- Dedric is our best offensive player and we need to play through him more. Bonafide stud. I wish he’d pop the top of the key 3 a few more times. But I love playing through him. Those drives are sneaky good
- Has Bill ever had a player as hot as Vick? This senior Vick guy is an absolute terror for short stretches. And HE’S EVEN DRIVING THE BALL. Who knew he could even do that?
- Bill let KJ play through mistakes (because he had too) and it ended up being huge. KJ got some confidence and ended up playing some solid minutes. A couple of great shot contests and rebounds late.
- Grimes played better, but he’s still got a long ways to go. A better Selden. I think Grimes will be back at this point…
- Mitch needs to look to score the ball more. It’s nice to have such an unselfish player, but he is being one to a fault at this point. His lack of offensive aggression is actually hurting us. SHOOT IT MITCH.
- Big Dave went largely unnoticed. Which I’ll take as a good sign.
- Offensively, as a team, I think we are finally finding a pecking order and Dedric is starting to get in a rhythm. Which is scary. We do need to take a few more 3s, but I’m ok feeding Doke and Dedric if nobody can score at their same efficient pace. Vick is the perfect addition to this team. He can go on those 3 minute bursts where he just completely swings the momentum. The weave and screen HI-LO combo looks kind of unstoppable with Doke in (if he doesn’t get called for fouls).
- Defensively, I don’t like double-teaming a 6’7 center. Killed us. But, we absolutely took out Schofield and that was huge. Grimes played better on D this game. Dotson is so pesky. I still thought 3 point shot challenges were a little late, but not horrible.
This is a great win. I’m sure we’ll get lept in the polls by the zags despite two top 10 wins this season. But oh well. I want these guys carrying that chip all season.
-
Moore hit an acrobatic shot and also a 3 and both came at critical times. He also hit another 3 that was taken out.
He might not be starting material but he is is a quality backup.
-
Dedric remind me of Perry, neither is athletic or flashy but both are skillful and do their work very quietly and when you think they are having sub-par games you look at the numbers and they are surprisingly very good. I like it.
-
@Kcmatt7 Dotson is the best freshman I’ve ever seen in acclimating to the game on the spot. Running the team like he’s been there 4 years. He might be the most underrated 5 star recruit in history. This guy is doing things that Senior Frank did. He has the absolute perfect game for our team. Now, I’m sure WVU and Nova will try to speed him up, and get him out of rhythm, but I think he’ll pass those tests with flying colors, like he has everything else. We aren’t nearly as good of a team when DD isn’t on the floor.
-
@JayHawkFanToo You make a real good point. Perry was flat nails, and Dedric is showing the same offensive dominance. Perry was a master of getting himself in position to make the shot, and as Dedric grows in our system, he will find those great shots as well. I think the best is yet to come.
-
Next, time to rip Stanford’s heart out and feed it to a Christmas tree… The revenge train rolls on! All aboard!
…
…
-
@KUSTEVE needs to get a shot, cause they’re going to give it to him.
-
@approxinfinity I do love Jarod Haase
-
@Crimsonorblue22 For one day, Ich hasse Haase.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 He’s spotted up pretty good so far, but he could simply be devastating if he can start hitting 3s. If they try to close on him, he’d be by them in a millisecond.
-
The ESPN+ all backboard cam, no commentator rebroadcast is awesome! Much better sense of individual contributions

As usual had to DVR the game after work…couple delayed thoughts from last night: — Dedric finally looked like a player. Loved that reverse lay-in. Didn’t offer much defensively though. — There are games where Dok looks like he isn’t ready to play physically. He’s huffing and puffing early. This was one of em. I wonder if when he’s done at KU we will find out he’s got some weird lung disease or asthma. — Dotson: man crush. I don’t care if he never takes a shot that isn’t a layup! — as much as I’m hating on KJ, and I’m still hating on KJ, he made a few important yet spastic plays. — Grimes is a virtual no show on the court. Can’t figure this one out. Best I can figure is that Self has set up isolations in years past for players like Wiggins and Oubre, but has emphasized post play so far with this team? Maybe he’s stupid and can’t pick up the plays and system? He seems lost all over the place. I don’t see one particular skill that sets him apart yet. I don’t see any skills that make him a one and done. Hoping by January he can figure things out. — loved that Vick did a little bit more than chuck up threes. Even drove the lane a few times! More! — we played some great defense at times last night. The Vols took and made some contested shots. — the weave: looks like we haven’t really practiced this yet. We got guys running into each other. Stopping short. Dribbling from corner to corner. Odd. — overall a great win vs. a very tough opponent

He missed 7 shots maybe you remember those as well?

Going to be making a post in the Dedric thread.

Grimes is in the Bill Self send a message box atm. It will be interesting to see how it works out, I think Grimes is the kind of player where he eventually does get it and plays well.
-
The question is: what’s the message?

Play defense or don’t play.
-
Yup, that could be it!

@jayhawkcsg when the announcer said doke was looking winded, I didn’t agree. He’s been playing a lot more minutes, til the foul problem. I think he’s in pretty good shape for such a big man. I did think the admiral was looking tired and then Williams, who limped or had some ailment every time he went to bench- thanks Doke!
