New 2019 Recruiting
-
Corey Evans reply to a question about Michigan’s new hire regaining J Wilson’s commitment. Found on rivals
Kansas is the strong leader for former Michigan recruit Jalen Wilson and if he were to not commit to either the Jayhawks or North Carolina, it would come as a giant surprise. Wilson will definitely keep Michigan atop of his list and if it is Juwan Howard, who boasts plenty of NBA background, the interest level would be there. However, the timing of his hiring could put the Wolverines behind the eight ball even further.
Now, if Howard were to keep select members from the former staff in Ann Arbor, it could help in the relationship building process with Wilson. He is intrigued by the small forward opening at Kansas which is why he swiftly set a visit up to see the Big 12 program for May 30. North Carolina might also snag a visit date, but Michigan is playing catch-up now and will do as such the longer the coaching search continues in Ann Arbor.
-
KU needs to put the hammer down on his visit.
-
Yeah no kidding. Looking at the excitement on Wilson’s face when he was talking KU during his interview the other day makes me feel KU is in a good spot. Of course that was before the hire happened.
-
Ok, so we now know Howard got hired at Michigan - - -surprise , surprise. - My thing is that yes with this hire , I’m sure Howard will hit Wilson hard throw his pitch - and I’m sure Jalen will listen for sure , I’ve heard his parents really did love Michigan - - big fans. - -It wouldn’t surprise me that he did possibly stay put with this hire - - yet wouldn’t surprise me either if he transferred out - -I’d it now has shifted back to 50/50
My question is - -has anybody heard or seen yet - - Has Michigan even released him from his LOI yet? - -I know he asked for it but haven’t heard if they granted his release - - anyone know? - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
I just rewatched the Wilson interview again and I noticed that at the very end he was asked if RJ will accompany him during his visit to Lawrence. He said no, but I know someone on here (before the interview) said he was. Now why would he deny that? Out of respect for other programs?
-
@rockchalkwyo RJ visiting with him isn’t set in stone iirc.
-
I would be surprised if he did. It sounded good at the time though
-
I wonder if the staff said he shouldn’t because they can’t give RJ food and rides and stuff like that
-
Maybe it is just the way the 2019 recruiting cycle has gone, but I would not be surprised if he ends up back at Michigan.

Definitely don’t like that they made a good splashy hire.
-
KU may still hold an edge since he did get his release and doesn’t have a relationship with the new coach at this moment. That’s about all the optimism I have. Michigan hired quickly and made a good choice given their options at this time.
I also think this cycle has just worn us all out. Its the end of May and we’re the only program in America with so much uncertainty still.

Ryan over at the Phog dropped these nuggets regarding Grimes.
Small fwiw, but if Grimes goes back to college it won’t be at Kansas. Have heard it’s possible he opts out and transfers, and now there are a few in the national NBA/Draft media that have mentioned it as well. I think there’s virtually no chance at him back at KU unless Dotson isn’t coming back AND Hampton isn’t joining the roster. Even then, I’m not entirely sure those bridges aren’t burned.
-
@BeddieKU23 I am worried about Wilson now. He was a fan of the Fab Five and he was named Jalen after…Jalen Rose.

I feel bad for Grimes. I really do. It seems as though his inner circle is filled with delusional people who have and will continue to fail him. He should have never even declared.
This is one of my favorite movies, and this quote all too often comes to mind…

He wants to play pt, maybe at a juco?

Last I knew Jalen and Howard really didn’t like each other.
Yeah the only way Grimes is back is if Dotson stays in the draft and we whiff on Hampton.

Quoted today as saying that Howard getting hired at Michigan will probably end up bringing the Fab 5 back together.

I suppose it’s possible. But either way, whoever raised him let him get too big headed before he ever got to KU then. There was clearly no backup plan in case he struggled.

I still feel some what confident -About Jalen. - -somethings going for us still
RJ being Jalen’s best friend - - how we really have his interest in the Sf situation - -stepping right into quality minutes , add those things on top of the Coach that he committed to come to Michigan to play for is gone - -add that to the fact that Yaklich sounds like he isn’t the happiest camper by not getting hired - -an with him being the lead recruiter for Wilson - -these things all have to play in our favor.
The top two Coach’s that was involved with you are gone or sounds like they are going to be gone - -you got a chance to play with your best friend - -one of the best schools in the game - -and like Jalen said never hear a gym as loud as KU’S atmosphere is just crazy - - - -He knows and really likes the KU Coach’s - -already got his visit sit up – even though Michigan was fairly quick with the hire – still kind of behind the 8 ball like Corey Evans is saying
We were in his final 6 BEFORE he committed the 1st time - I think we get him on Campus for his visit - can go a long way - -we might still be OK. – ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

I would bet marquette is an option for Grimes.
Also, I mentioned this before I feel re Grimes transferring
-
@jayballer73 I was going to say the same thing but you beat me to it. I want to say KU was his 2nd choice behind Michigan
-
@BShark will he get to play right away?

I think G League. Another 2 years in college are very not appealing to his crew.

@Kcmatt7 Rose lobbied publicly for Howard to get the job.

No which is why what @FarmerJayhawk mentions is a good point.

This is how we got Malik Newman and that worked out okay for KU. Hopefully it works out for Grimes as well wherever he ends up.
-
Ryan posted this as well
"I think Dotson is coming back, but that is mostly pre-combine info. I don’t have any reason to believe that’s changed.
On Grimes - I don’t think his people want him back at KU regardless. The Vick situation was much different."

Do you think most players in his position have the same attitude? Isn’t it kind of rare to find those OAD types that have no ego and are humble? It seems rare to find them but I could be wrong. So I don’t know that Q is acting any differently then most kids in his position would. I know none of us on here are experts when it comes to the draft and what these kids should do with their lives but I can’t imagine many KU fans agreed he was ready to jump to the pro’s. Somehow someway he and his camp thought so and now reality has started to set in…
-
Grimes opting out, transferring – perhaps a good decision for all if that’s where his head is.
I’m sure all of this is all Bill Self’s fault (in the mind of his “people”).

I’m really looking forward to the OAD Rule being gone. But, of course, there are only so many teams in the NBA and eventually - yeah, I’m calling it - the player’s union is going to balk at all of the young players coming in and taking away from their fat second, third and fourth contracts (forcing veterans out). Let us not forget that OADs or even kids going to the league straight out of high school is - Malone, Garnett, Kobe and LeBron aside - a relatively new thing. The league will very soon mandate that they have to be 20 or even 21 years old to enter the draft - mark it! Their product has suffered for awhile now, which is why they instituted the rule to begin with.

Awesome news - - think this puts and end to Jalen though - -but that’s ok - -SILVIO is BACK

You guys get a chance - check out on Jalen’s Twitter - - see the post Prison Mitch sent on the 18th of MAY - -really cool video that Jalen retweeted.

Jalen has nothing to do with Silvio. He wants to be a 2/3, so if anything this helps the cause!

If signing RJ and Wilson — or anyone —means that Agbaji won’t start, no thanks. We need to cultivate this potential star.

I think Ochai is closer to Releford than a star guy. Which is fine, you need Relefords.

Adding RJ and Wilson to the class brings it back into the top 10 nationally. Would be pretty crazy after all that went down this last year.
