Spectrum Going Under

Interesting. Being carried only by the two most incompetent cable outlets in the KC area did not help. Also, with Zenger gone and no chance of getting another sweetheart deal from KU was probably the kiss of death.
-
Maybe we can get a decent deal for JTV on a channel that folks can get most places in our state.
-
Go back to 38 the spot. Ask for donations if you need to cover lost revenue. But put the games where everyone can watch them.

Agree.
Let other local channels pick it up if they want to as well. I almost guarantee WIBW or KSNT would pick them up in Topeka… No doubt other stations down in say Wichita as well.
-
KU should put its games on PPV. I’m happy to pay for the TV I want. Quasi-donation to KU athletics. Make bars, restaurants pay a premium. I’d pay $20 to watch an exhibition vs. Emporia St.
I know that’s a wildly unpopular opinion.
-
Don’t know if they’d make as much on PPV though. Certainly not a good PR move either. Is there any other school in the country that does that?

The optics would definitely be bad. And as for how much money would they make, that is a good question. I’d be in at a similar price point to @HighEliteMajor but I bet many people would not be. How does this compare to tv station deals and ad money? I honestly have no idea.
-
Before the kidnapping of 7 yearly games, KC showed them on KCMO with Piper and Dave Armstrong.
-
They would likely make more money from even a small contract with a local TV station.
-
In the Wichita area, we get those 7 games on what used to be referred to as “Cox 22.” They are now on either Cox 2021 or 2022 (I think those channel #s are correct). Will Cox not have these games any longer? The article may have addressed this, but I can’t access it as I’m not a KC Star subscriber.
-
The Jayhawk Network official broadcaster is Spectrum Sports Kansas City, formerly;y known as Metro Sports and if your cable provider had a subscription you got those early games. You could also get them on ESPN3 but the entire State of Kansas and the KC greater Metro Are were blacked out. Now that Spectrum Sports appears to be ready to go out of business it is unknown who will broadcasts these games and I will guess nothing will be resolved until the new AD is in place.
Luckily, the majority of basketball games are either on ESPN or major network.
-
@JayHawkFanToo Does no local carrier mean the blackouts would be lifted? Is this actually good news for you folks living there?
-
@JayHawkFanToo How much did KU get paid for placing the games on Metro Sports?
-
I am not sure. I believe the black out was to not compete with Metro Sports but now that it is either shutting down or changing the focus of coverage maybe the ESPN 3 blackout is lifted. However, if the contract is still in place and Spectrum sports does not waive its rights the blackout might still be around. Remember that Metro Sports did not pay KU any money but provided programming-in-kind instead. What a lousy contract but then, KU appeared to have been in the mood of giving away money through ridiculous contracts.
-
As I understand, KU got no money, only programming-in-kind (supposedly worth millions) that featured primarily various lesser sports whose only audience was the athletes themselves and their families and friends.
-
@JayHawkFanToo To be fair, that was the stream shared with ESPN3 usually and it was probably a very good recruiting tool for those other sports.
However, the in-kind broadcasting could be done reasonably well by journalism students for pennies on the dollar, IMO. I know high schools that film their own games using the students and the broadcasts are very impressive.
There is really no excuse to have KU BBall games blacked out in KC. At least not if the company you are going to use doesn’t even give everyone access to that product. My biggest complaint was always that we never even had the option to get TWC/SPectrum.
-
I agree. KU journalism students should be able to do the programming and the school’s TV station can do all the broadcasting and make the stream available on the internet. The contract was yet another sweetheart deal that made no sense.
The only time you blackout broadcasts is so they will not compete with the live gate; however, all KU basketball games are sold out so you would want to maximize audience and profit and this contract did neither.

@bcjayhawk 2122 or 2022, or 22. Not on 2122 often, unless something else scheduled for 2022. I’m trying to find info!
-
I read somewhere the deal is worth 6 million annually

Yes, KU usually was on 2022 even if there was a conflict with a WSU game. WSU usually got bumped to 2122. I switched to Cox a few years ago and have stayed with it notwithstanding how overpriced it is and how often they raise rates, but I’ve always thought it was worth it to be able to see the blacked-out games. If Cox isn’t going to show these games, I may start paying more attention to barrage of Direct TV offers I get from AT&T! Cox may be a looser here.
-
That is the contract with IMG that markets the KU brand and includes stadium and arena signage and licensing of merchandise. You will not find anywhere a cost for the agreement with Metro Sports because it was structured as a “partnership” with the payment being production and streaming of sports programming in lieu of actual money.

@HighEliteMajor F*** yah! That’s a great idea. Im out of state tho.
