2019 Recruiting
-
Not the best news I’ve heard. But I think we’ll be fine.
-
I hope people don’t try and read to much into this. - Very good chance he is looking to play against stiffer competition then the High Schools he has been playing against - -I don’t think it changes anything recruiting wise - I think we are still in very good shape
-
IMG seems to be most tied to Under Armor, right? That’s ok, if we really want him, we can pay back anything UA gives JRE anyway.
-
KU has landed multiple players from IMG. Actually don’t see this as a huge issue.
-
@BShark - -me neither that’s why I was saying I hope people don’t try to make more out of this then what it probably is - -stiffer competition - trying to get better against better competition
-
Ha, well found a couple of pretty cool things while doing my daily trolling - - cough - -cough. Today I traveled off to the East , visited the North Carolina boards.
1st thing was their fans sure seem pretty confident that as they say themselves that Ol Roy can steal Robinson Earl - away from KU - - I know they are in love with the kid. - -Multiple posts said they wanted him over any other recruit in this class - -They feel ol sniffles because Lester played for him is in really good shape on top of the fact they are trying to really build of the fact that Earl is playing his Senior season at IMG lmao. - they say if he was going to KU he would of never left Kansas - -I call BS.—I still believe we are sitting pretty good and again from all that I’ve read and even said myself - it’s so he can play against better competition
Another article off their board the thread was should KU still be considered a blue blood? - -To their credit most of the UNC fans shot that poster down pretty fast most of the response said most definitely KU should be. Kind of caught off guard because I thought they would have a hay day trying to back it somehow but most didn’t agree with the poster - - He was trying to base of National Championship - -how we had a sucky league and ya da ya da ya da you know ? - -Anyways good night my friends really tired today - -don’t ever get old - -have a great NIGHT. - - rock chalk all day long baby
-
FWIW I like UNC fans more than any opposing fanbase. They hate the same schools we do and have a ton of shared history. Even had some buy me a round of shots after the Elite Eight game this year!
I do think we get JRE though. The U17 games really showed what’s possible with Self’s tutelage.
-
Well a couple of things I read today. one being saw that we picked up another CB for Samuel Williamson like a day ago from Andrew Slater. Kind of hope he ends up here will be a nice 3-4 year player for us.
The other is - - - here is the question and I know we have discussed this before , but read today - it’s about Zach Harvey. Do we still recruit him OR do we drop him?
Well 1st off looks like charges have been dropped from felony to misdemeanor. pleaded no contest on Monday in Wichita. the charges now are - - endangering a child & breach of privacy - - had been sexual exploitation of a child & he possessed sexual explicit image of a child younger then 18. The girl was 15 at the time - -Zach was 16 at the time.
Initially these guys were charged with Promotion of a child to preform sexually explicit acts Zach is to be sentenced July 23rd at 1:30. So what’s your take? - -do we still recruit him OR do we just totally back away?
Now my take - -Hope I don’t get looked at as a pervert about this BUT I think we still go after him. I mean ya it was wrong but he is or was a typical 16 yr old kid. How many teenage kids probably have some form of what would be looked at of pic on his phone with nudity of a female , he just made the mistake of sharing more then likely , got caught up in it - -made a mistake -but like I said been dropped from felony to misdemeanor. I don’t think you cruicify him for this - maybe be put on some kind of probation - community service but I mean I dunno I just don’t think this is serious enough to back away from the kid. - Like another poster said what’s the rest of his background like? - is he constantly getting himself in trouble? - or is this just one of those growing up immature things that teenage boys go through at that age - thinking the wrong way? I could be looking at this all wrong. If I am I apologize I’m sorry but I just don’t see the justification to back away from him over this - -just my take. So whz yours? - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Sounds like Hurt to KU could happen in the fall. Would be a great addition and solidify a need early on.

USA USA USA.
Def take him and let the chips fall where they may with JRE. Would love to see both at KU tho.
-
@BShark gotta have Earl!
-
Read we picked up yet another CB for Hurt over the weekend , puts us at 67% - -next is Minnesota at 17% - then North Carolina at 8 %. Been some movement on the predicts for us here lately with him -we was at 50% - to 17 %
I guess my question is now what everyone is thinking? - - -Do we end up landing Hurt and Earl both? - - Do we land Hurt and not Earl? - - Do we land Earl and not Hurt? - - Ideally would be huge if we could land both. - Coach I think had plenty of strategy in mind on top of the games when he was their with the team. He played them on the floor at the same time a lot. I fully believe in the back of his mind he was showing these guys that they BOTH could play at KU and play at the same time in situations without really saying that was what he was experimenting with during the games. I think he wanted the players themselves to see that just because one committed doesn’t mean the other one can’t commit.
Even though I’ve have stated in earlier posts here that just because Earl is going to play his last year for IMG I said doesn’t mean squat about hurting our odds of landing him here - -having said that I’m just starting to wonder if he might not land here - -no not because of transferring out to IMG , I still stay that move is like a business move for the kid he is just trying to expose himself to better competition , and I have really nothing concrete to justify why I’m beginning to wonder if he is fading some with us - -just kind of wondering for some weird reason I thinking chances might not be as good.- -hope I’m wrong , probably am wrong. - I had a feeling before once- I had a feeling I was gonna win the lotto - – - I WAS WRONG. -Anyways what you all thinking about Earl? do we get one of them? - - -Neither of them? - - both of them? - If we land only one of them which one would you prefer? - – -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
If the staff misses out on Earl it would be a huge miss for them. They have been recruiting him for a long long time. I don’t think landing hurt will hurt our chances at all with JRE. Obviously the staff has been going hard after both and has a sales pitch that they can coexist. I will be pretty disappointed if the don’t land JRE.
If they do miss I wonder if they start recruiting Chandler Lawson again??
-
I still think it’s pretty likely we get both. Ideally JRE pops around Late Night and Hurt during the early signing period. I think Sam Williamson does too. Then we shoot for the moon for a Cole Anthony, RJ Hampton (pending reclass) or Precious Achiwua if he’s still on the board come spring.
-
This is a year where we have misses I think. Hard to land guys when you have Big Dave, De Sousa and Mitch here.
It wouldn’t surprise me to see us whiff on JRE simply because of depth. Of course, all of this depends on what his inner circle is thinking. And how he felt his USA Basketball Experience went.
-
I don’t think Mitch is going to scare off any top end talent.
-
@Woodrow A 4th year Mitch puts doubt in some heads I’m sure.
I never would have thought that Landen or Jamari would scare people off, but it sure felt like it did.
-
I think part of that is Bill Self’s reputation to play experienced guys over newer players. That makes it harder to recruit a potentially more talented player who knows he may still sit behind a less talented (but more experienced) player.
-
…the kid he is just trying to expose himself to better competition…
Maybe Baylor would be a better option?
-
@justanotherfan Oh exactly right. And I’m ok with it. My point is just that we shouldn’t assume Mitch isn’t viewed as “competition” by players looking to come here and play right away.

Rivals is releasing their new rankings this week and did a sneak peak of their top 10. JRE made a nice jump up to #9 and Hurt is #5. Need to find a way to get both of them.

A few more targets: Anthony at 2 (+2) Jaden McDaniels at 4 (!) Josh Green at 10 (+6) Tre Mann at 29 (+8) Sam Williamson at 34 (+10) Zach Harvey at 47 (-6) Chandler Lawson at 86 (-13) Jacobs at 91 (-7)

Here is the link to the updated Rivals rankings. Jacobs continues to fall. I wonder if the staff regrets taking that commitment so early?
Also Chandler Lawson has been in a free fall for a while.
-
@Woodrow Honestly, i’m ok with it. I still like Lawson’s upside and Jacobs attitude.
-
Jacobs was always a long term player. I hope he still ends up at ku.
Williamson should become a priority imo.
-
@FarmerJayhawk The same can be said for Harvey still fallin. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
Malik Hall is still a top 50 player, but not sure how high of a priority he is for the staff right now.
-
We need to land long-term guys now because 2021 will be a big changing of the guard. It won’t be near as easy to plug holes with OAD talent. We need to get our program guys in the program now. So I won’t be disappointed with landing guys ranked around 100 right now. It is the best long-term move IMO.

thinking Oregon becoming a pretty stiff player for Hall. – ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

I think we end up with something like Jacobs, Hurt, JRE, Williamson, and another guard. Could be Harvey or hit a HR with Cole Anthony. Probably will add another too via transfer or a late bloomer.

Kofi Cockburn going to visit next month. Literally the perfect replacement for Doke.

Norm
And I agree he would be a solid addition. He is um, a large human being.

Well doing my troll thing. - Read off Kentucky board - -that rivals had came out with their early predictions where the top 15 ranked players would land for the up coming recruiting season - -the rivals people involved making predictions: - - - Eric Bossi - - - Corey Evans - - Dan McDonald & Krysten Peek.
Showed us as contenders on some but the two I think we all have talked quite a bit about: - - Matthew Hurt# 5 - - -& Robinson Earle # 9
Here is how they predicted: - - -Mathew Hurt : Bossi - - -Evans - - & McDonald - - -all say he is committing to KU - - Peek says N Carolina.
Then as far as Robinson Earl: Bossi- - - Evans - -& Peek all say he is committing to KU - -McDonald says N Carolina.
I’ll take that - Bossi and Evans usually pretty decent. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Just another quick little follow up from predictions that I saw. – - I also just saw where we picked up another CB about 20 minutes ago for Hurt from Dylan Prezkop. - -Now puts us up to 75% to the next at 17 % - -if the CB means anything - -anything at all then we sittin in a fairly decent spot for Hurt would love to get him. - --ROCK CHALKALL DAY LONG BABY

Looks like things went pretty well with Hurt at the FIBA games.
KU then UNC then whoever else imo and KU seems well ahead.
-
@BShark Actually is N Carolina fallin off? - -the reason I ask is the way it reads now on the CB is KU 75% - --Then Minnesota at 17 % - -then cloudy at 8% doesn’t even name North Carolina any more , like it does KU OR Minnesota- according to it Minnesota is the only other school list as predicts. - Makes me wonder if they fadin. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Didn’t you just mention the cb being worthless?
UNC is ahead of Minnesota imo.

Well ya but who listens to what I have to say lol. - - - -bottom line I reckon is time will tell but looks like were sitting ok at the present. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Hurt & Williamson would be really good additions. I hope we get them both
-
So let me ask , for real how serious of a contender are we for the services of Josh Green ? - - Read from 247 that he is # 11 in the Nation - – looked at the CB for him shows us tied for the lead with I think UCLA right now. - -Seems like a pretty good player moving constantly up -we got a shot? - - -Harvey on the other hand just continues to slide down to # 49 now. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Been seeing Arizona mentioned with him, believe hes visited.
I dont think the cb is accurate here
-
@BeddieKU23 ya I understand. - -not really sure how much faith we can put into that CB- it’s more like about possibly 60/40 % most of the time.- - -Yet do you think we have ANY shot? - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Really long way to go for Greeen. I’d say Arizona is leading now. I think KU is more interested in Sam Williamson at this point. Can’t see us adding more than one wing.

Ya I had heard a lot more about Williamson - -really hadn’t heard much on Green and then just happen to be checking out 247 player rankers and saw his CB so made me curious. - Would be nice to get Williamson even though Green rated quite a bit higher. Having said that sometimes you get that hidden jewell - all we have to do is go back the last 4-5 years - -the names of Mason/Graham come to mind lol.-- ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
@jayballer73 for sure. I do think Sam could end up top 25-30 by the end of it. Between him, K.J., and Garrett we’ll be fine at the wing. I would like to add one more guard though, whether it’s Harvey or ideally Cole Anthony.

K j going to be a really big swing 6’8 I know he also played SOME 3 didn’t/doesn’t he? - rebounds very well especially from a 2 spot 8 something a game? - I think Anthony is a stretch would love it but just don’t see it happening although anything is possible I reckon and as far as Harvey like I posted earlier he just continues to drop and with his little run in - not really sure how hard we are still on him ya know? - he is a decent player just not sure that Coach wants any more iffy types at this present time but he knows better then we do. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

I haven’t seen anything about Green close to a decision which could help things. I believe KU is still in his recruitment but who knows.
Williamson has shown a lot of interest in KU and vice versa. There is a lot of connections to him (parents) which I think makes it logical to expect he’ll be a Jayhawk when its all said and done if he continues to improve the way he has.
Williamson & Green are two different prospects though. Green is a potential OAD, starter as a freshman. Williamson is more of a 3-4 year type player that likely is a rotation piece as a freshman. Which do we need more?
I think KJ leaves after the year (age factor) and follows his brother. That leaves Garrett and maybe Cunliffe? Sam could use the graduate transfer route as well after this season to find more playing time. Agbaji is a candidate for a RS, unknown how ready he will be for a bigger role after this season.
There’s a scenario where KU needs a bunch of perimeter pieces. Say Grimes, Dotson, KJ all leave early and of course Vick is a Sr. 4 max perimeter players leaving, more realistically 2. I see Dotson playing at least two seasons here.
2019 would look like this:
PG- Dotson. Moore, Jacobs (Current Commit)
SG- ?, Possible Dotson or Moore slides into that 2 PG type lineup. Definite need for at least one elite shooting guard.
SF- Garrett, KJ, Sam, Agbaji
Maybe one of the wings transitions to the SG position. Most likely Marcus in that scenario because of his ball handling. If his shooting improves that would improve his chances a ton.
I think Self should be selling elite guard/wing prospects some legitimate minutes in the backcourt as KU is likely going to need them.
-
@BeddieKU23 Cole Anthony would be ideal.
