Welcome David McCormack

  • In his own words

“Looking forward to winning more championships and making more memories at Kansas.”

  • McCormack cites Bill Self’s player development and assistant coach Jerrance Howard’s recruiting for his decision.

  • This is a part of Virginia known for churning some of the toughest players in the country.

  • SNACKS!

    See: Mason, Frank.

  • Big boy tried throwing a little curve. - -Three hats on the table - - - -none of them KU , thought - -hold on now what the hell. - tried to be sneaky lol. - Well pretty well takes care of our bigs, they saying locally that he is 6’10 , so is he 6’9 or 6’10?. - Just glad he is on board

Now we just need to get Grimes and the other I think we are still solid in on Devon we be good to go - -then maybe. just maybe some way sway Zion to come. - -Welcome aboard Mr McCormack - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • Owning the glass will be a great thing come tournament time! This year and next!

  • He’s a legit 6’10 and pretty long too. Great size for a 5. We’re going to dominate the glass with him, de Sousa, Lawson, and maybe Udoka.

  • Our front line will be in good shape with De Sousa, McCormack , the Lawson Brothers , and The even Mitch, just got to get our back court in order. - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • We need Lagerald Vick back in the worst way next year. If Vick leaves, all of KU’s projected major rotation minute players will either be 1st or 2nd year players in the program. The talent level will be there regardless, but the last time KU had a team that young was in 2013-14 which was the Wiggins/Embiid team. That team was ridiculously talented, but they had no leadership and that’s the biggest factor in why they lost 10 games that year. Lightfoot will be around next year, but he doesn’t appear like he may crack the rotation next year in the front court so he doesn’t figure to factor into the on court leadership that KU could be lacking. This is why KU needs Vick back, he would be the undisputed leader of the team as the lone scholarship senior on that team.

With what’s available in the 2019 class (KU already has a player committed), KU will need to have players who will move on after the 2018-19 season. DeSousa and McCormack are multiyear players so they aren’t likely factors. Grimes does have OAD potential, Zion Williamson is a OAD, and Dedric Lawson is good enough to leave after 2018-19 so we gotta figure Self is looking at those guys to open up space for JRE, the 3rd Lawson, and some of the other 2019 players.

  • I have to wonder? Is Coach Self taking himself and KU out of the OAD circus? I mean 2 quality bigs b4 late night? Has he finally figured holding out for the 5 stars and missing on other top talent made his job harder? I mean I think I would rather lock up the top 4 star talent that will give you a couple years. I wouldnt turn down 5 star guys BUT if KU lets UK, DUKE, and company fight for the 5 stars while we swoop in and sign the best 4 star guys I am game!

  • Great get for the program. Looks like KU is set with bigs, need either Dotson or Grimes (both would be even better) and hopefully Zion and with that we have a heck of a class.

  • “A beast down low with a physically attacking post game,” said Meyer. “McCormack also has mobility, a mind for the game and a penchant for positional defense,” he added. McCormack’s size and strength allow him to get position on the low block and to bury his defender underneath the basket.

“McCormack is a beast on the blocks,” said Meyer. He has great size and plays a physically attacking game. You won’t see a lot of fade away jumpers from McCormack. He loves to attack the defense with aggressive moves to the basket. Defensively he has the size and mind for the game to make him a strong positional defender," Meyer added.

Backs up what I was saying in the first post. He could quickly become a fan favourite.

  • According to National Recruiting Analyst Andrew Slater, McCormack’s hard work on his body has made him a much more explosive player on the court.

David McCormack has always had a great deal of relative low-post skill, but the transformation of his physique since arriving at Oak Hill Academy has helped him remain on the court much longer and create additional explosion," said Slater. The 6’10" Virginia native is one of the most efficient low-post players in the class, but has also looked to steadily improve his face-up shot from the high-post," he added.

According to Slater, McCormack’s already polished offensive game and his ability to block shots and hit glass will immediately stand out to Kansas fans.

Offensively, he’s relatively polished for his age. Like the earlier Jayhawk commitment Silvio De Sousa, McCormack now rebounds at an exceptional level on both ends of the court," said Slater. “With the improved athleticism, the five-star senior has developed into a more effective post defender, particularly as a weak-side shot-blocker. He still needs to trim his physique more, work on his lateral quickness, become a better overall defender, and cut down on his turnovers. Overall, landing Dave McCormack will be both an immediate rotational player with his rebounding and low-post skill as well as one who brings the ability to develop into an all-Big 12 honors type of big man as an upperclassman,” added Slater.

  • @Statmachine He’s listed as a 5 star on 24/7:

Anyway, he is the type of player Bill should have on his team every year: big, burly, aggressive player. He’ll knock some noggins. Give me a guy like this any day of the week over a Carlton Bragg. Let the guards shoot the 3 pointers - welcome back, muscle.

He is highly rated but is also probably a four year player. During his recruitment he actually mentioned planning to get his degree and what he wanted to major in iirc. That’s…pretty rare and refreshing.

Agree completely, great fit for Self/KU.

I think it’s more a function of this class not having many good bigs. When Bagley went to 17 it left 18 with really only one surefire OAD big (Bol Bol), kind of a rarity. I also think our lack of bigs the last couple years has driven Bill up the wall. Definitely not his preference to play small. With Silvio and Dave, we’ll be able to beat up anyone on the block.

As an added bonus, Dave is going to be in Zion’s ear all next weekend about KU. Just a little extra bump from committing now instead of a week from today.

  • This guy is too big, too strong, for today’s game.

Doesn’t he realize the era of the big man is over?

    Who would draft this guy?

What? Is Self getting demented? Has he forgotten that small ball is the future? Signing someone 6-10 is futile. He will never be able to play, because the other team’s bigs will be 6-7 and too mobile for him.

What a waste of a scholarship!!!

    Ahem.

Thank god Self signed him NOW.

    Sign a bunch more.

    They are giving you big.

    Take it.

  • What I’ve seen from Highlights:

    Pros:

    • Big Dave has mastered the drop step to both sides. Something that, for some reason, most freshmen big men can’t seem to do.
    • Appears to run well, especially for his size ever since he lost the weight. I’m not worried about him having to play 25 mpg.
    • He has decent touch and should be able to at least be a scoring threat on the block.

    Cons:

    • Not an elite athlete. Sure he is a giant and he runs pretty well. But as far as explosiveness, I don’t see a lot. Looks like he is about to get hung on the rim almost every time he dunks it.
    • Does not score well left handed. Typical problem for most freshmen coming in. But I hate to see that from a big guy especially. It takes a lot, lot, lot of work to develop touch with your opposite hand.

I think that he will be a VERY good college 4 year player, and be an impact from day one. I think his lack of elite explosiveness will keep him in college though, much like it has Dedric Lawson. For that reason, this signing is an A+. The frontcourt is going to be solid for at least a couple of seasons now.

  • @Kcmatt7

Is implosiveness Self’s new counter strategy?

Self popularized the explosive player; then everyone copied him.

Now Self is signing implosive players.

By implosive, I don’t mean hapless, flat-footed guys.

There used to be a kind of big man that was a wide body without much explosiveness. Some of them were short, like 6-6 Ed Nealy that played for Jack Hartman at KSU, and then in the pros. George and Wes Unseld were like this. These were guys that could barely clear the floor, but they developed great footwork and were great at staying on spots and moving guys off theirs inconspicuously. They flourished as a minority at a time when basketball was into long skinny guys that could run and jump in transition, or use their height b2b in close. But the bean poles fell prey to the implosives in half court sets.

Or maybe Self is betting Hudy can add 6 inches to this guy’s vertical the way she did with the Morri?

    Either way a good get.

  • Welcome Big Dave!

Important signing for Howard, kudos for the close.

We are going to love seeing this one develop. With the way he’s changed his body up Hudy will be very excited to keep working with this one.

Imagine Doke and Dave next year? Unlikely it seems but we can all wish.

Time for Self to get those guards…

  • @jaybate-1.0 I think either of those scenarios is a great recruiting strategy. UNC has adopted that strategy and been very successful. Seems like he is sort of combining the OAD, Gonzaga and UNC strategies into a super roster for his 2nd championship. not a bad plan if you ask me.

    Lots of good nuggets here.

For @BeddieKU23 a quote from his mother

“This means the world to me,” said McCormack’s mother, Janine, who joined the broadcast’s final 30 seconds. “I’m so proud of David and I support my son 100 percent. I think he made a wonderful decision.”

  • @BShark

    Nice one!

Huge pick up for KU’s future. Things changed rapidly with this one. We’ve talked this one up for a while and its nice to see one end up with the good guys. David seems like a really bright individual driven to succeed and has put in a ton of work to facilitate that.
