Thad Matta Out
-
Apparently announced he was done after this season do to declining health. After that caught wind, he must have upset a donor or something. Announced retirement today.
It was time for him to go anyways. Couldn’t even fill the roster for next season. Losing players to out of state teams. He lost it. Happens sometimes. Was probably because of his health mainly too, which is always sad to see.
-
@Kcmatt7 Who do you think is going to replace him? Already heard Marsha, Donovan, Crean and Mack, not sure why you’d a failed B10 coach in Crean but who knows. Maraha is already a top 10 paid coach and would take prob 5 million a year to get him to consider it.
-
He didn’t announce his retirement. He ledt because he’s been missing on a lot of recruits and both he and the AD agrred a change was needed. Matta will gone for 3 years (time left on his contract), probably at ESPN or BTN during that time and return to the sidelines after that when he’s healthy again.
-
@Kcmatt7 Holy Snikeys, the “Nose” is out of a job. That’s a pretty big snozz they’re going to have to replace.
-
@kjayhawks I have no idea who will fill that spot. They really only have two options. Put in a place holder like Crean. Or pay top dollar and get a guy like Marshall. They got in the game too late to go after an up an comer. If I was them, I’d take a long look at Romar. At least he can recruit some talent. I think if you could get him for $1.5M a year you’d take him. Especially with being so close to Chicago and New York. If he doesn’t land recruits in his first recruiting season next year, you move on and go for a young guy. If he lands some studs, see if it plays out. This is there lowest risk with highest reward.
Just my thoughts… OSU is a good job. But, this is a tough spot to be in as an AD.
-
@Kcmatt7 I hope they do go with Romar- that’s guaranteed disappointment city for Bucky.
-
Unless a top level guy wants to come now, OSU is probably going with an interim for 2017-18 and then going for a big name in 2018.
-
Thad Matta - the Scott Drew of the Big 10
-
@nuleafjhawk Except Thad coached in the FF at least twice and actually won the Big10 5 times. Scott Drew would not be mocked on these pages if he had a resume like that.
I’m a little saddened to see his demise. I’ve always enjoyed watching his teams play. Always had a lot of talent until very recent years anyways. To make the FF in 2007 and then rebuild the roster to make it again in 2012 shows some coaching chops that Drew would be envious of.
I haven’t a clue who they might hire but OSU is a good enough of a job that they’ll probably disappoint someone by taking a decent coach from a decent mid major which will create a bit of a coaching carousel.
-
@wissox I’ve always had great contempt for TM - probably mostly because of Ohio State. If he had coached at the Oklahoma School of Horseshoeing - meh.
NOT a Buckeye fan.
-
@nuleafjhawk when he lost to us in the tourney he whined about it. Sullinger had way more class in the postgame than his coach! I think that’s what did it for me.
-
@approxinfinity I don’t recall that. What did he whine about?
-
@wissox “Scott Drew would not be mocked on these pages if he had a resume like that.”
Just for fun: Oh, sure he would! People here even still mock Coach K! And, Scotty is such an inviting target. I believe he will always be mocked at KU for pulling his players from the pregame to avoid the video, regadless of his successes.
Now, speaking of mocked coaches, if Squeaky got a new haircut and started sounding like James Earl Jones or, say, Sam Elliott, would we still mock him? Yes! It is way too much fun!
If Doug Gottlieb became a coach and won 23 straight championships, don’t you think we would still call out “Pants on backwards!” every chance we got?
As for Matta, I never had much opinion about him. Not in the Big 12, and he isn’t the only coach to whine after losing to the Jayhawks. Maybe I missed a mocking opportunity?
-
Bummer. For real. But, how is this KU related? Just curious
-
Crazy OSU did this. Matta deserved better but the results on the court had slipped a ton.
-
@Lulufulu Well I mean you are right. With all of this offseason news I should probably move it…
-
Greg McDermmott offered job. Great get if they land him. Might put Mitch Ballock back in play for the Hawks…
-
Greg McDermmott offered job. Great get if they land him. Might put Mitch Ballock back in play for the Hawks… Does that make this KU related now? @Lulufulu
-
@Kcmatt7 I think Mitch went there due to more playing time offered there over KU.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 Oh I know. But if he does end up back on the market, we need to pounce. We need another Tyrell or Brady. Important pieces to deep tournament runs.
-
@Kcmatt7 he’s a great kid!
-
Yeah playing time was the issue and nothing has changed. Unless he could handle the ball at the d1 level he doesn’t have a real path to pt at KU any time soon.
