Bill Self on potentially hiring a GM…

  • It’s semantics. Bill and the assistant coaches serve in the recruiting and evaluation rolls. Mass Street collective was in charge of NIL dollars. Stripping duties from a many people to give it to a single GM doesn’t necessarily sound like the best model for success with an experienced staff. On the flip side - - If you had an inexperienced coaching staff (new coach like Scheyer), I would think it would be almost necessary in this era.

I’d rather see more staff devoted strictly to recruiting evaluation rather than a GM with sweeping duties.

  • @dylans either way, its not anyone on our current staff, imo.

  • I thought his answer was fine. It isn’t like we aren’t bringing in the top rated talent from the portal.

The GM talk is a bit overblown right now because this roster didn’t gel. I don’t think a GM fixes that necessarily. If the same issue persists next season when we are finally starting someone new at PG and PF I may change my tune.

  • Those GM’s don’t handle external scouting. They manage the NIL deals for players already within the program.

I was reading something from Matt Tait that one of the issues in the transfer portal is how fast things can move and coaching staffs don’t always have the time they would like to vet for fit with the team.

The other thing that really stood out to me in Matt’s article was how much the portal has changed the culture of KU. Transfers have pretty much always been a part of the rotation from Self (Rodrick Stewart, Jeff Withey, Mario Little, Kevin Young, Tarik Black, Dedric Lawson, etc.), but there was always enough leadership from the established players brought up in the KU system and culture from big time players to the homegrown talent to show the transfers the KU way and hold them accountable when they weren’t meeting expectations. KU doesn’t have that this year as Dejuan and KJ aren’t the most vocal players and not suited for leadership roles and it’s allowed non-KU culture to take hold this year leading to a lot of the issues.

Yes, there are Zach Clemence, Elmarko Jackson, and Jamari McDowell, but they have minimal influence at this point because of their injury and redshirt status within the team.

Matt said the hope is next year with those three back, with at least Elmarko expected to have a prominent role, along with Passmore and Tiller that a lot of culture issues will resolve themselves as KU should have several players in the rotation and leadership roles that haven’t been “tainted” by other programs.

  • Frank Mason made his pitch for the job. Get that man a job Bill

  • Circling back to this if Self leaves who do you want?

Sampson or Pearl - any chances of proven guys?

    Oats, Golden or May?

McCollum I liked but once we saw the tempo they play at - I’d rather not

  • There may be other threads on who the next coach will be, but after reading Mike Vernon’s recent take on Self’s future, I Apparently it looks like self could be gone in 2-3 years… So as Kuballin10 recently posted , who would be the best fit for us as a coach? We all know the good news is that this is still a primo coaching gig…

  • I think it would be interesting to consider NBA coaches like Steve Kerr or Brad Stevens…

We are putting next year’s team with these 3 as leaders?

    Now I’m worried.

I was watching Houston tonight. Every one of their guys are athletic and want the rock down the stretch. Until we can fill a team with guys like this, we are going to get beat down in games against teams like Houston.

I don’t want to post the full section of that article because it’s behind a paywall, but it’s essentially saying these are three players who have been around the program and can show newcomers what it means to be a Jayhawk under Bill Self because they’ve only ever been apart of Bill Self’s system in college. Jackson and McDowell will be entering their 3rd year in the program and Clemence his 5th so they’re going to be the veterans of the program that will be responsible for setting the tone and culture for next season. Flory, Rakeese, and Tiller have only known Bill Self’s way so it should be harder for players not originally recruited to KU to become a negative influence within the program and not meet program standards or not be held accountable for not meeting program standards.

Essentially KU will have more KU guys going through the offseason to keep incoming transfers from gaining too much influence in the program.

With Elmarko, he’s got a chance to be one of KU’s two or three top players next year amd hopefully become a leader next season both on and off the court.

  • @drgnslayr So, if we can BE Houston, we can beat Houston?

  • @Texas-Hawk-10

I hope you are right about Elmarko!

  • @nuleafjhawk

ha… maybe it’s just me… but they seem to know how to recruit very athletic players that fit into their system. For us, it often feels like we get a few magic pieces then we fill the roster with whatever we can get.

  • Peterson is the real deal. Will be fun to watch Elmarko, Peterson, and Flory. Nice athletic core.

  • I’m available.

I hope you are right about Elmarko!

Elmarko was put into a bad situation his freshman season. He wasn’t intended to be a starter or play off ball. That all changed when Morris was kicked off the team. Elmarko is an on ball player and should look much better and more natural running the point next season.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10

agree he will be so much more comfortable going downhill off high ball screens. His size and athleticism (if not impacted) will give him a chance to be a terror in the lane. He also showed good touch from the FT line. Very interested to see his development next season.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 often thought Elmarko needed to be on ball, just like Timberlake and Grimes. Very much fingers crossed for Elmarko next year.

  • Doesn’t Peterson need to be “on ball” too? Is anyone good “off ball”?

Seems like that’s a big part of our problems this year. AJ needs the ball in his hands, Hunter needs the ball in his hands, and if the ball isn’t in Juan or kjs hands they are actively not guarded so better get the ball in their hands, and if Rylan doesn’t have the ball in his hands he just kind of floats to the corner and waits (this has been a little better the last few games).

I see why we all love flory.

  • @benshawks08 such a great point.
