Shakeel seems to be most athletic guard in the team, more so than AJ.
After Flo, #2 most athletic.
-
This was kind of a game where HCBS was licking his chips and smiling all the way back to Lawrence.
-
Chicks love the long ball. A 49-48 football score is rapturous. A game with barely 100 points is awful…say some. But defense is 51% of the game. Yet many comment ‘we’ll never get to the 2nd weekend’ or ‘this team is broke’. Not sure why this team can’t score the basketball but if we were won 94-80 yesterday it’d be joy in mudville because the team can make shots. No one would be complaining about a 14 point road victory.
Not really seeing this here but seeing comments on other social media about the teams struggles.

I mean the offense is not nearly close to the level it needs to be. #32 ranked on Kenpom, the d is rated 28 places ahead. They have been struggling to score all season long. You need to be proficient and good at both ends in March. Defense will carry you so far as it has lately but this is the regular season.
Hopefully as time continues on we’ll see improvement on offense. We play the best team to date on Wednesday in their gym and it’s crucial we see a level of offense that can compete with the big dogs.
-
@BeddieKU23 We do have a neutral court win over Duke so we know this team can beat other elite schools on a neutral floor.

And how freaking weird is all that!? Totally the opposite of how we thought this team was built. Thought we’d need to score 90 per game to compete!

On the podcast Field of 68 , these guys were impressed how KU has become a pretty good defensive team. - - over the last three games we are giving up a scoring avg of 47.6 points pe game- 48 , 55 , & 40 .- last two were 13 points in the 2nd half – & yesterday 15 points- -they were talking holding Cincinnati to 40 points on there home floor. - that’s a point a minute.
The host said really love Hunters comment saying if we are going to play poorly then let’s just make sure the other team plays more poorly. —Shaq is making a big difference- - believe that
-
REALITY CHECK: ISU awaits us! This is a team built to give us a real challenge. We better bring defense and we damn sure better bring offense. If we dilly-dally through the first half of this game we will be down 20+! I heavily suggest we finally make Hunter stay in the post and score! You want high ball screens, that’s what KJ’s for!

First half dilly dallying is a concern.

This team is good. Just doesn’t look like how some people would want it to. Then again some people are never happy.

Good point. I’m still not sure we can play this kind of defense against say Iowa St or Houston coming up and but it’s been impressive to see the lock down defense of late. If the offense does come around not many teams can beat them

Sometimes those early season games are not the best indicator but you always hope they are a sort of predictor of how the team would handle neutral court games in the tournament
-
@BeddieKU23 i will take the growth curve of Bills team over Scheyers team all day, provided the talent is there.
-
And currently Duke is the only ranked team in the ACC.

??? I thought our offense was ranked way down low?

KU had plenty of adversity in that game and still came away with the win against a legit title contenders. Had KU had a healthy Shak Moore at that point, I don’t think that game would’ve come down to the buzzer. I think KU would’ve had a more comfortable 8-10 point win.

Bill Self is a victim of his consistency and greatness. I was looking at a list of Naismith coach of the year. He’s won it once. The guy named after the breakfast drink at KState won it. Calipari has frickin won it 3 times. Roy only won it once with us, none with UNC. Freaking Mark Few has 2 awards. Yes, but Bill Self has 1, but he does have two trophies. 15 coaches on the list since 86 have zero trophies which really should be a major factor in the award.
-
@wissox Those awards are typically voted on after the conclusion of the regular season and before the NCAA Tournament starts.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 I understand but I still can’t believe that someone who has a huge number of #1 seeds, meaning great regular seasons couldn’t have garnered more than one which he won in 2012. Interestingly Larry Brown won his in 87-88, which sounds like the vote must have been post season. I’m a bit miffed that Roy didn’t get more than one and it wasn’t in a winning season either. I think he won 2 or 3 rings with UNC but only got his award in our great 96-97 season.
I’m sure neither guy is losing sleep over it. Proud of our great coaches we’ve had.
-
@wissox There’s also multiple organizations that give national coach of the year awards as well and Self has also been the AP coach of the year twice in 2009 and 2016 and won the Sporting News national coach of the year in 2000 at Tulsa.
From the major organizations, Self is actually 4 time NCOY since the Naismith one you’re referencing was in 2012.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 Thanks, the list I was looking at was Naismith only.
-
@wissox COTY trophies in most sports tend to be an award for which coach most exceeded their season’s expectations. The actual COTY is always going to be the Naismith trophy
-
It seems like, to me, the ACC has taken the biggest hit from a growing SEC.
-
To the experts
Is Auburn best team in the country so far
-
@AsadZ Quite possibly they have been BUT they won’t be as they will be beat this week without Broom. If ISU wins this week which is quite possible against Ku & WV - -they will be the # 1 team next week. that would be the first time ISU has been top ranked since I think they said 1944 & ISU’ only loss this year is to Auburn in a one possession ballgame hard to debate that.
-
Heard some interesting comments from John Fanta when he was a guest on the Hum , which is a KU Podcast today , had to agree mostly he said when asked-- -he said at this point he sees KU like making an elite 6 - -yet KU for sure could be a final four , he Co host from time to time with Jeff Goodman and a couple of others from the field of 68 pretty decent pod casat:
Why he thought A J Storr had been struggling so far this Season ? -his answer was well one he thinks Storr is just thinking to much instead of just going out and doing what KU brought him in to do. That shoot the ball and score , he said think about it, Storr has been in his last two schools been in losing programs-- no pressure. Now he comes into a true blue blood and there is pressure and just over thinking instead of just doing what he does -he says he knows this AJ Storr is to good of a ball player to be the 9th player coming off KU’S bench.
He was asked what he thought the outcome of the ISU/KU game and he said he just think right now ISU is just to good playing at home said he thinks will be a good ball game sees it ISU like 65/59 somewhere around a six point game
Keys for a KU win: - -Find open perimeter shots & match ISU defensive intensity for 40 minutes , says KU can’t have any 5 minute droughts -
-
And large part because of the money difference the two conferences get that is shared to schools. The investment from SEC schools in basketball has increased dramatically
-
Hmm if Iowa St hadn’t blown a big lead against them in their matchup we’d be calling them the best team so far. A combo of those two teams have visually looked tops and probably a gap after that. Auburn’s defense isn’t as good as several but they certainly can score with the best of them.
Gilbert of Iowa St is a sneaky top player that gets no recognition. I think he’s a baller. Just a solid team overall
