  • It’s not fun to play the blame game… but I will.

I blame everyone except Furph and Timberlake. Both those guys played to their potential!

Everyone else played like they needed a nap. And we can’t use the excuse that they play too many minutes. They do… but so do other players in college basketball that still come to play.

We need some leadership. We need someone stepping up now and taking charge… someone to lead, cheer lead, bring energy, help establish team pride, help establish team identity.

I can see this team losing 8 - 10 games this year. Because of our wins on top teams, it should help keep our NCAA appearance string alive.

It doesn’t have to be like this. We can play with anyone if we decide to.

  • How about blaming Bill?

I don’t like to blame Bill… but he’s had some alarming statements that make me think he’s about ready to call it quits. He admits to coaching softer and even his players admit it.

It’s going to get harder for our team to come hyped up to play a game.

I’m starting to see the writing on the wall. Hate to admit this, too.

  • I thought Kevin was playing hard, his body language was good.

I am surprised that Bill did not play Nick much in second half especially in final 10 minutes.

I thought Nick had a solid first half, best so far in games played here.

His passing was good, and he was playing with energy.

  • Gurley and Hanni on the radio near the end of the game were saying that WVU was missing quite a few guys earlier in the year. I noticed 3 guys who played key roles yesterday who have played in only 8, or fewer, games. So I think their poor record is a bit misleading is what Hanni and Gurley were saying. I’m not saying we couldn’t have beat them but it sounds like they were really missing some guys that would have made their record and ranking higher.

    So we’ll get to 5? 😒

  • WVU pulled shots out of their entire collective asses. A team that shoots 31% from three lays a 57% 12 makes on us. Game came down to the wire and we got a bad call on Elmarko when he caused a steal and then the inbound play Elmarko got body checked out of the way by the guy who caught the inbound pass so he got screwed twice in a row. Battle a 40% FG and 25% 3 point goes 7 of 13 and 3 of 7. It wasn’t great defense but the ball went their way all game. Freak game. Now we need a complete game from first half Furphy and kinda first half KJ too. Sometimes HD get messed up on perimeter switches and leaves the post wide open. They went right at our freshman phenom but The Furph’s all around stats were very good and zero turnovers.

  • If you watched post game, Kevin played D really bad on his man shooting 3’s. To far off, helping off to much. Furphy missed his block outs really bad at the end of game, think they were counting 4. And yes they have guys back that didn’t start out with them. Their really good big man didn’t even play, says a lot about Hunter not going after boards. Furphy will learn!

I know this also , these two losses does not look good on our resume. I’d be willing to go out and say- -THIS Team will not be a # 1 seed come Tourney time, especially if they lose 8-10 games like you say - -I can seee them losing 8 anyways - -just not good

  • @jayballer67 lets see where those teams end the season

  • Think we take substantial drop in polls.---- 8th possibly ?

  • I think the defensive issues are mostly on Hunter and Furphy. They get out of position or are slow to rotate causing KJ, Kev, or Harris to have to cover MASSIVE amounts of space. They seem to be recovering late to 3 pt shooters because they’ve had to deny a pass into someone who is wide open under the basket. Self always says the best defensive teams help the helper. This team doesn’t do that yet. And unfortunately, having 3 pretty good individual defenders can’t make up for a couple of guys (more if any of the main 3 are on the bench) that just aren’t engaged beyond trying to keep tabs on their own man and failing even at that. Hunter has shown some signs of improving as a low post defender but when he gets out in space, he just can’t recover. The high p&r just murders him and he’s left basically standing 30 feet from the hoop where he can’t defend or rebound at all. They’ve been trying to hedge more on those to blow them up but it just isn’t working. I do worry the overall switch 4 strategy just isn’t going to work for this team which means we could be in for some ugly defensive games as we transition to something else.

  • @benshawks08 what can Braun D for you?

  • @approxinfinity He definitely has more foot speed to do what needs to be done in those situations, but not the experience in Self’s system. People always wonder why freshman and transfers struggle offensively but it’s more about what he demands players do on D. When it works it’s elite. Our title teams have both been able to lock teams down seemingly at will by turning up the pressure and having such help rotation that there just isn’t a shot.

This team is getting there but WVU exposed the weaknesses pretty well and capped it off with just stupid good shooting. The 3s and all the turn around fade away jumpers don’t help a defense look good. If they shoot their season average from 3 that game and nothing else changes, we win by close to double digits. I’d argue without the liquid hot first half from those guys from behind the arc, the game never gets close.

Looks like they have 6 more road games (is that right?). I’d say 4-2, 3-3, or even 2-4 are all possible for the road games but not really any worse than that. Then throw in 1 MAYBE even 2 losses at Allen and that’s 5-6 more. another in the big 12 tourney and then more than likely one more in the NCAA tournament. That could get us to 10 or 11.

My hope is that they only drop one in Allen, and then get back to .500 on the road. That would give them a good shot at still winning the conference. As far as the one seed goes, doesn’t look like anyone is solidifying themselves as a surefire 1 seed so who knows where everyone will be by March. Right now we have dropped 3 and there are only a handful of 2 loss teams out there. And it’s not like those other teams don’t have some headscratchers too as far as bad losses go…

  • Well I wasn’t to far off as to how far we would fall. - -I said probably drop to 8th - -we dropped to 7th. – Big twelve still has seven teams i top 25 STRONG

  • Timberlake has an edge to his game and he, Furphy and Parker show no fear and Elmarko is getting there. Elmarko does have that mid range shot he hits too. It would help if we could get more downhill baskets but it’s going to be tough until we get the moxie to shoot our open three opportunities. Juan hits his only when it’s not his second or third option which is true of Elmarko when has open looks but hesitates and air balls them and when Furphy double pumps or forces up an off balance side step try he misses. Nick does have a nifty pump fake and slide left he has swished. Bombs the eff away because until we do it’s a whole season of defenses packing the paint and close ass wins or losses and acid indegestion.

  • @Zabudda

We shoot way too many midrange jumpers imo.

  • @BeddieKU23 i have a hard time seeing mid range jumpers as beneficial for us as well. Though if KJ takes them at least it means hes in the mix to stop the resulting transition offense the other way…

  • @approxinfinity

Gotta be a balance there, last night KJ/Kev fell right for it due to Cincinnati packing the lane. We all know the analytics behind the midrange shot. I just think we settle for too many and it’s not good offense for our players.

Kev is shooting 34% on 2 pt jumpers, Harris 31% and on roughly 1/4 of their total shot attempts. Not great by any means.

KJ and Hunter shoot 48% and 52% respectfully and the volume is high (37%, 47%) of attempts. Way too many 2 pt shots from your bigs especially Hunter.

  • @BeddieKU23 I’d disagree about Hunter and KJ. Those percentages aren’t bad and for KJ especially, it’s how he is going to contribute to the offense and help provide a little more space for Hunter to get the truly easy ones. That doesn’t mean I want KJ to shoot that 15 footer EVERY time it is open, but a couple a game can do wonders to keeping a defense more honest and prevent more clogging of the lane.

  • Looking UCF spanking WVU currently looking like that loss isn’t t near as bad as the WVU

  • We are in danger, imminent danger, of Furphy being defended like Gradey. Put as athletic a SF as they have belly button to belly button on him to deny him the three attempt. Then with the four on four game against a packed in defense what are we going to do? Hunter is 0 for 7 on his last 3P attempts. Juan or Kevin to the rescue? If we could keep teams off their offensive boards we could get out and run but we are dead last in stopping our conference opponents from getting additional chances.

I don’t see KJ knocking that shot down enough to be respectable

  • @benshawks08

I’m hesitant to believe in the numbers being good for Hunter/KJ because the data isn’t broken down enough to see the splits from where the shots are coming from. A long 2 vs a 10-12 footer is a big difference.

I want to see KJ continue to expand his range which he’s showing at times but the issue is consistency. It’s a good shot when it goes down but feels like an empty possession when he misses. I hope he gets to where we can count on that shot. He’s gotten really good at the push shot off the short role in the paint. The face up jumper though still doesn’t look natural but I hope he gets it there.

Hunter tends to take a fair amount of 2’s outside the paint. Recently he’s been missing those shots more which is concerning (likely due to the knee). We know he can shoot it and has a nice shot. I do get frustrated sometimes when he gets a shot up so fast after catching it because if he doesn’t make it there’s nobody from KU in position for an offensive rebound. Some of the uniqueness of his skillset doesn’t help the other 4 because at times he’s too fast for everyone. He’s obviously worked very hard to where it’s unique to his game but those long 2’s become a risky shot. I still don’t think we’ve found the balance between getting him enough paint touches where he’s so deadly. He should be living at the FT line.

  • @Zabudda Furphy seems to be a better cutter than Gradey was so if teams guard him aggressively, he may be able to still exploit that. Even if not, that still would occupy the opponents best defender for the game and give everyone else a better matchup. That’s still good for a guy that was the 6/7th man a month ago.

Hunter is still over 40% from 3 from the season even with the 0-7 recently. Offense has looked good lately and I think we are looking for things to complain about if that is the concern right now.

Problem recently seems to be that the starters are playing so many minutes that the defensive intensity takes a hit. I worry about that less in march when the stakes are higher, but this team definitely plays down to their competition. That will make winning the b12 difficult.

  • @MR11 defense has definitely been an issue since B12 play started. One thing to consider during the NCAA tournament commercial breaks and halftime are longer.

  • Anyone know what Huggy is doing now, since not Coaching ?
