NFL Draft - 2023
-
Most analysts are not giving good grades on Chiefs round 2 and 3 selections. Folks are saying that better WR options were available than Rashee.
I think Veatch took into consideration Mahomes input who had worked out with him in TX recently.
To be fair, no one knows how this draft class will pan out.
It will be interesting to read these comments again in Nov and Dec.
-
@AsadZ Draft gurus all fell in love with the Tennessee receivers - Hyatt and Cedric Tillman, so they are going to blast the chiefs pick. They also rated the beast from OSU Dawand and Marylands tackle higher.
Rice I don’t know much about. He led fbs in receiving yards @112 per game. Supposed to be good at high pointing the ball (41” vert was best at combine for receivers).
Dawand Jones is an Orlando brown type player and Veach has already tried that experiment. Huge, but slow. The tackle he selected (Wayna) has quick feet, but needs to work on both his footwork and hands and could anchor better. He’s played both LT and RT so good for a swing tackle if he doesn’t win the RT job outright.
I am cautiously optimistic.
-
Kinda laughing at the Eagles drafting every Georgia player they can. Haven’t seen that strategy work before with ‘Bama players, will it work with Bulldogs?
-
Hoping Lonnie goes soon
-
Veatch trading up and taking VA Tech DB in rnd 4, seems to be mainly for special teams, at least in year 1.
-
@AsadZ That one has me scratching my head. Time will tell.
-
Veach has had two straight really good draft before this one. Before those it was mixed at best. Lots of guess work in this line of work. I do like the athletic profile for the DB.
-
Veatch liked his versatility, played multiple position - safety, nickel, outside.

Definitely a Spags DB. Versatile like you said, big hands, good length, great jumper. Fast enough.
-
Chiefs need to select a running back and I think one more OL for depth.
-
I do think Veach gets cute with his picks at times. This year feels like that. But it’s hard to do. As long as you have Mahomes you’ll be competitive.
-
@Kcmatt7 I’ve seen Mahomes break the laws of physics and levitate horizontally while tossing the pigskin in the Super Bowl. If that happened in Madden I would’ve been pissed at the game engine for cheating.

Yes and the Chiefs have already won two which is incredible. The Packers really laid out the blueprint for how to waste a franchise QB with Rodgers. Absolutely insane.
-
Any word on what the Chiefs got from the cowboys for 6th round pick 1?
-
@dylans 5th round pick in 2024 draft
-
Chiefs have resigned RB McKinnon.
They have also signed former Bucs LT Donovan Smith, veteran LT. It seems that Chiefs are trying to add depth and competition in OL.
-
Love love love that they locked up McKinnon.
And a new left tackle! Crazyily unexpected.
-
How do folks see Chiefs season panning out?
I am thinking they go 13-4 with 14-3 a real possibility.
-
@AsadZ UNDEFEATED!
Well, sure, I know…but why the hell not? I mean, just think how much fun it would be to shut up both the 1972 and 2023 Dolphins in one fell swoop?
-
@AsadZ I would say Chiefs win at least 11 with a healthy Pat. A great shot at starting 8-0.
They probably win 13 games, but it’s still a tough schedule. Jets, Bills, Cincy, Chargers x2, Eagles and Dolphins are all going to be tough games.
-
14-3. Patrick has never won less than 12 games.
6 50/50 games I’m guessing they win half of them.
-
Ha, I had 17-0!
-
Unlike last year Chiefs schedule is back end loaded this year.
-
What do fans think about Hopkins?
He has been linked to Chiefs for some time.
Should Chiefs sign him?
-
I’d love to have Hopkins.
They say he’s not a great route runner, but who cares! He produces. May be a good match for Mahomes’ escapability ability when the pockets breaks down.
-
But, the potential drawback is what will it cost, and who we’d have to ditch.
-
@rockchalkjayhawk Yes, what is the cost and will it hinder progress of young WRs.
-
I’m guessing he’ll want obj money (15mil per year) or better. Would be hard to pull that off. A restructure of Mahomes contract is always possible - but not a good idea at this point. Chris Jones getting an extension could free up cap space too. The chiefs currently have 1.1mil with Rice left to sign - $700-850k in space effectively.
I’m thinking Frank Clark could very well end up back on the team.
-
Clark signed with Saints.
-
@AsadZ Do you know something no one else knows?
-
@AsadZ I knew they were interested, has a deal been finalized?
-
Bleacher Report indicated the Saints should sign Clark. Seattle and KC rumors too. I don’t see anything about having signed with any team.

I’m out on Hopkins. You don’t give 30-year old WRs expensive and long contracts. We just won the Superbowl with a pretty mediocre set of WRs. Roll with what you’ve got.

Yea, but this crew is even more mediocre than last year’s group. I’m with ya on the money aspect though.
-
@rockchalkjayhawk I think Toney goes for 1200 yards this year if (admittedly a big if) he can stay healthy. If Toney is out for an extended period of time they could have some issues.
-
@mayjay https://www.arrowheadpride.com/2023/6/1/23744104/arrowheadlines-signing-julio-jones-would-make-sense-for-the-chiefs
I had read in this story, perhaps it is not accurate.
-
@AsadZ You missed the headline, apparently, so it looked like statement rather than the author’s idea of what NO should do. Happens a lot, partly because layout editing is soooo poor nowadays!
“7 Post-June 1 Moves That NFL Teams Should Make Before Training Camp”

Julio is done. You’re better off giving those reps to the young guys.

That’d be awesome if Toney could have that kind of production. he’s a bit of a mystery, so fingers crossed.
-
A bit late but Clarke going to Broncos.
-
Indifferent about Clarke moving on. He had his moments.
-
Clark was only good in the playoffs, but when you’re there every year that’s kinda important. Hope they can replace his post season production with in house talent. That guy from San Fran is intriguing

Meh, the SF guy isn’t really intriguing to me. I watched most of his games for the last two years. He’s been “on the verge” of a breakout season for like half a decade now. He’s a body. Seems durable. Throw in the domestic violence stuff and double meh.
-
@rockchalkjayhawk Not up to speed on his off the field baggage. Great just got rid of Clark and replaced him with a less productive version of the same guy.
-
@dylans Some experts who obviously know more than me give the Chiefs good grades for signing him.
Tyler Sullivan at CBS Sports gave the deal an A- grade and wrote, “Omenihu has a ton of upside and should thrive in Steve Spagnuolo’s defense. Playing next to Chris Jones will benefit him immensely.” Our pal Matt Verderame from Sports Illustrated gave the Chiefs a B but docked them solely for his off-the-field concerns. Meanwhile, Seth Walder from ESPN concurs with the B rating and calls Omenihu a “fine” signing given the weak free agent selection.
-
Cullen is a very good D-line coach. He’ll get the most out of the group. We shall see.
-
He was playing in SF behind elite DEs. At KC he will get more opportunities to showcase.
-
True. I’m hoping for his breakout season! Or at least a solid rotational guy.
-
What do fans think about Chris Jones holdout. Per media reports he is demanding $30M/year and Chiefs are not close to this figure.
In the meantime, he is being fined $50M/day for missing camp practices.
-
I think Chris Jones is 29. Likely his best football will be behind him in 2 years. He’s under contract this season and then he has two years of Franchise Tag in his future.
Not sure he has a lot of leverage. Not sure the Chiefs benefit from giving him a deal. So to me the Chiefs can play hardball and should.
I think he plays this year under his current deal and then he gets a new deal after the season. Either with the Chiefs or through a tag and trade.
