New Mexico State Situation
-
Didn’t see a thread for this yet. Pretty crazy.
Summary
Basketball program suspended indefinitely. Shutdown was due to police report filed for hazing activities. Apparently some were sexual in nature. There was a player that was involved in a shooting earlier this year, as well as a big fight among the players. We are already seeing players transfer out.
Coached by Greg Heiar who has previously coached with/for: Steve Forbes (has been rehabbing but took a show cause for Pearl), Will Wade, Larry Eustachy and… GREGGGGGGG Marshall.
-
Hazing almost always happens because coaches encourage it.
It’s sad every time you hear stories like this.
-
@BShark The shooting apparently involved a guy from NMSU who allegedly was lured to the dorm room of a UNM player he had had a fight with at a football game. The UNM guy shot the NMSU guy in the leg and the NMSU guy then drew his own gun and killed the other guy.
This was months ago. No charges were filed. The suspension press release moade a specific statement that it was not due in any way to the “incident in Albuquerque” (the shooting).
I read a long thread of comments on a New Mexico website. The blatant racism on that thread, not objected to by anybody, was appalling. Apparently only 1 NMSU player is from NM, and the board just bashed all the “urban” players from elsewhere who come for easy money, to party, and get laid or into fights.

For sure and like most here I was involved in HS sports. This sounds a bit…above and beyond.
-
The apple doesn’t fall far from the coaching family tree apparently.
-
@mayjay I was trying to make it clear that the suspension was only due to the recent police report. Good mention.
That last part is pretty horrible.
Their roster construction was very questionable. Something Self has done a good job with is having a good team culture, family atmosphere etc… I love that Wayne is around the team. NMSU had by my count at least 3 players that are with their third program. There can be multiple reasons for this of course. We had JCL last year and were his fourth team but certainly you have to look into the circumstances for transfer. I wouldn’t want Erik Stevenson on our team, for example.

A real murderers row there.

New coach as Jans was successful there and bounced for Miss St. Looks like they really didn’t vet this one well.
The shooting situation was crazy. Crazy town world

He was a henchman for Marsha. When Greg punched Shaq Morris, Heiar witnessed it, and then lied about not seeing it.

No Dave Bliss connection?

I’ve been looking for awhile to find any details on the hazing stuff. Can’t find squat.
With the shooting plot, it’s not hard to make the leap that the hazing was harsh.

Nothing official so far but these appear to be local reporters.

@BShark wonder if the wsu fans would want this guy?
-
Only vetting left to do is asking if the guy’s wife like’s a gin & tonic… or 7

i mean this is pretty sick if true. -Stripping a player smacking his ass and touching his genitals in front of the entire team while they held him down ?- -No one help him - -what the hell is things coming to. -I’ve heard some pretty sick stories about hazing when guys wanting to join what is it Fraternity’s or is it Sorority --hell I don’t know which is which - - -I’m old but whatever it is heard a lot of stories where some actually got shut down cause of such type things , some worse then this- -I don’t get it
-
Just awful

Teach your kids to do the right thing! Go to a teacher or a coach or your parents. Makes me sick! This makes me wonder about the coach. Google hutch high and hazing. Maybe scratch the coach!

makes you and me both sick- - I don’t even understand the purpose. I mean is it just to de mean the kid embarrass or what ? - -I would hate to begin whatelse might of happened , why these other kids didn’t try and help him - - Mercy

@jayballer67 Sometimes hazing is intended to create team bonding but that only works when everybody goes through the same thing, and, of course, if it is actually voluntary and basically harmless (like making new guys streak an opponent’s campus). Coaches have been known, however, to use hazing as a way to use players to drive someone off the team. That just gets sick.

I know some probably won’t agree with this , I understand but I just hope and I don’t think he will - but even with Udeh progression a little I just hope doesn’t do something rsh and yank KJ from the starter spot - - -at least at this point and replace with Udeh. That would just be wrong in so many ways.
KJ has busted his ass to earn that spot , and has really done nothing to lose it. - KJ can guard just about all 5 positions- - he will score some points for you - - at this point s many as Udeh will , he dives on the floor doesn’t mind getting dirty can block some shots — just flat out hustles. - - If something like that were to happen could screw him up big time. - - Not saying down the line some sure maybe Udeh get’s the start, even if he doesn’t gonna get plenty of minutes the way it is right now, actually benefits- -helps give KJ a break/rest.
I just think at the present that move could only be a negative move and in the end mess with chemistry. Again not saying if Udeh continues to improve then a little bit then you do what needs done. - -Right now Udeh not quite there
I don’t think anyone is saying bench KJ. Even if the minutes go 50/50, KJ has earned the right to start.
I understand they wasn’t wasn’t even saying that- -All I meant waas I hope that something like that didn’t happen , not saying anyone was wanting that . Yet I’m sure there is some moran out there thinking that

@Kcmatt7 what does false imprisonment mean?

taped to a bench probably
-
Sadly, this shit has gone on for decades. I’m still pissed off about what a couple of my high school pig coaches thought was funny 40 years ago. Those guys should have been fired then and in jail now.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 said in New Mexico State Situation:

Usually means not letting someone leave without legal authority or just cause. (A citizen’s arrest, for example, gives you authority to detain someone, but you had damn well better be right and do it properly!)
-
@DanR they probably would be now! Anybody look up the hutch hi hazing?
-
Those are both opposite. So how would that apply in this case? The only one that would have a case for a citizens arrest would be the victim and he doesn’t want to even file charges. That is why I don’t understand.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 No, sorry about the confusion. I was discussing citizen’s arrest generally just as an example where a private person detaining another person is lawful because they are catching a criminal, not in the context of the hazing here where the victim/s apparently were kept from escaping by their assailants. In a case like this unlawful imprisonment may be very means-specific like Dan said (taping someone down), but usually is charged where someone is forcibly kept in a locked room or house.
Just to bring up more of the crap we used to deal with in criminal law, kidnapping involves taking someone unlawfully, whereas unlawful imprisonment involves restraining somebody from leaving, but they are often both charged because there isn’t a bright line separating the two.
It isn’t just being tied up or handcuffed. It is triggered by forcibly not allowing someone to leave. I have heard of kids filing complaints about being unlawfully imprisoned, but courts give great leeway to parents confining their children within reason. E.g., you can’t lock a kid in a room with no way to safely get out in case of fire or accident, and you cannot leave them in a locked room while you go away. You can restrict them (grounding).
-
@Crimsonorblue22 I saw you read that as I was editing. A couple more things if you want to look at it again.
-
I guess that would apply to 3 of them holding him down too. Thx to both of you! Surely they can press charges. I’m sure many of you have seen the news of the young, pretty gal that was bullied, beat up at the high school and and then she committed suicide. Video of her getting beat up was viewed thousands of times. Either the superintendent or principal quit his job. Parents are on to teachers now about grooming, BS! Parents need to do a better job of raising their kids. Guess how many come to conferences?

I think they forgot Jan’s grabbed some gals rear end at a bar and lost his job. Forgot where.
