Thursday nights starting 5...

@BeddieKU23 I like that starting 5! It’s interesting to get opinions from other people’s perspective. Like you, I think my list would differ from Self’s, but here it is…

    Starters: 1 Harris, 2 Agbaji, 3 Garrett, 4 Lightfoot, 5 McCormick

Order off the bench: 5 Wilson, 4 Enaruna, 2 Braun

Closing minutes in a tight game: 1 Harris, 2 Agbaji, 3 Garrett, 4 Wilson, 5 Lightfoot (Harris only if he’s handling pressure well with ball handling, and Lightfoot only if he is stout on D, otherwise swap for Enaruna)

the one problem or I’d have to dis agree with on your starting 5 would be is- - -who is gonna score the ball for you, who is your shooter/scorer ? - -other teams could really lay back on D Agbaji would be your only legit threat, and they would smother him - -Harris really no threat to Score - - Marcus way to inconsistent not a solid shooter , Lightfoot not gonna score that much - -just doesn’t work I don’t think - - not trying to say your not entitled , to your starters just don’t see many offensive weapons with that line up bud. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

    • Enaruna - PG
    • Wilson - SG
    • Mitch - SF
    • Gethro - PF
    • Dave - C

My list will differ from Self’s.

Starters: Garrett, Harris, Agbaji, Enaruna, Wilson.

    Order off the bench

Braun, Lightfoot. Dave for foul trouble or matchup against lumbering big (see TCU). TGF, play if up 30.

Same as #1, insert Braun if playing well.

Okay but for serious - this lineup is probably the best they can run out there. Just no other combination that has really shown it poses a real matchup problem. Enaruna, Garrett and Wilson are our three best finishers in the paint. They really should be playing on the floor together more.

I like this starting 5. We’re at a point, in my doomsday like opinion, to where we just say F*** it. With this 5 Agbaji can screen behind 2 bigs and pop up 10+ 3s a game. Also give Dave the green light to try 3 with Mitch at the rim for rebounds.

  • @Kcmatt7 That lineup would be awesome to see!! 🙂 That’s some serious height! Why not, let’s see how they do.

I’d love to be sitting in the bleachers for practice this week and see who’s taking Self’s comments seriously. There might be an injury or two in practice this week.

  • @Kcmatt7 Good point Matt. I think Harris can actually shoot, he just doesn’t because he’s trying to carve out minutes as a point guard. I think he’s something like 3 for 5 from 3. He also has a good floater.

Garrett can be a much more effective scorer in the 3 role. I think Self needs to tell Harris and Garrett specifically what their roles are… “Harris, you are the point and I want you to bring the ball up the court every time if possible.”

I think our biggest problem now is role confusion. Once that it defined, scoring will come more easily for these guys. My two cents anyway…

  • Glad Self’s our coach.

  • @SlickRockJayhawk the eye don’t lie. Harris’ 3 pt shooting form is not good. The rest of his scoring I like. I think he is very creative with the ball in his hands and has nice touch and awareness of defenders around the rim.

  • One thing Self hasn’t done yet is settle on lineups. You see a lot of different combinations out there and some of these lineups fail before they even play 3-4 possessions. I think he could cut down on who’s playing with who and really dial in who subs in and when.

I think the offense could improve by running a ton of ball screens on top or even after 1-2 passes. Force rotations, create an angle, get someone open or on a drive and kick. There has to be more life to this offense coaching can implement then what we have seen.

  • @approxinfinity Yea that shot aint it… Doesn’t mean it can’t be fixed, but in it’s current form it isn’t going to do anything. Sad thing is that Self basically doesn’t make that his business. Garrett had four years to work on a jumper. He is literally just a jumper away from being an NBA player and nearly unguardable quite honestly. But nope. Here we are. So I don’t really expect Harris to ever develop past a .350 shooter from deep on very few attempts.

I’d like to see Harris get a little bit more aggressive but that just comes with confidence. He realistically shouldn’t even be in the position where he has to play more than 5-10 mpg until he is like a junior or senior… The perfect program guy. It is just unfortunate that he is the only PG on the roster at the moment.

  • @Kcmatt7

I don’t love that 5 either but at this point Enaruna might get you 8-10 points a night with 25 minutes. He has averaged 5 the last 5 playing 13 minutes per without Thompson. Worth a shot to see what spark on offense he can give this team.

Agree with you on four of the five, but I’d swap out Garrett for Braun who I would tell to shoot the damn ball and keep shooting the damn ball. I would still give Garrett starting minutes, but have him coming off the bench filling in at three positions.

  • Wilson, Enaruna, Braun, Harris and Agbaji.

Bench - Muscadin/McCormack, Garrett and Thompson.

  • @Kcmatt7 no summer workouts

  • Harris needs to grow! Fill out! He will.

Interesting lineup with the 2 bigs starting. Definitely think we can move Garrett off the ball and use Harris to initiate offense.

  • Good stuff in here. Would love to know which team stunk it up yesterday…

  • Since we’re playing TCU and we already ran them by 29 at their place, I would put Harris into the line up, take Braun out and slide Garrett to the 2 spot.

McCormack had arguably his best game of the season against TCU so unless he’s one of the guys Self said didn’t respond well in practice yesterday, I’d keep him in the starting line up at least for Thursday.

I still think as long as Self is going to play through the post with roster instead of basing the on motion, pick and roll, screen and roll and other action to open up driving lanes, the offense is going to struggle with consistency.

  • @Crimsonorblue22 this isn’t really true. I mean we see what Wilson did this offseason

  • @Kcmatt7

Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t Wilson improve on his own, most likely at the direction of S&D coach from home?

Bingo. If you didn’t come from a family with means to get to a private gym you were kind of screwed. Or in Enaruna’s case couldn’t leave your house.

Harris probably won’t be a great shooter, but this staff is one of the best at reworking shooting forms. Garrett is a good example. From his freshman year he’s improved by 10 points from 3 and 34(!) from the line. Ochai has made strides each year. Shoot, even Doke added 10 points from Junior to senior year. Jackson improved throughout the year. And on and on it goes. They aren’t miracle workers, like Garrett isn’t going to turn into Phil Forte anytime soon, but kudos to them and Marcus for putting in the work to become at least a threat from 3 and a reliable FT shooter.

  • @FarmerJayhawk

The staff’s ability to retool shooting strokes is the last of my concerns. Good details.

However I’m pretty sure Tyon’s jumper is unsaveable.

  • I don’t know if he just goes bonkers in a game or what? Putting all those subs in at the same time last game🤬💩🙏

  • Isn’t there a mole living under the Allen Fieldhouse bleachers (picturing Gollum from Lord of the Rings) that can report on what’s going on at practice this week? C’mon Tait, this is your chance to bring us a real story about KU basketball. Or a perfect opportunity for Tom Keegan to make a reappearance to AFH.

  • @SlickRockJayhawk

The info coming from the team has been tight lipped for several years now…
