Thoughts? Hopes? Fears?

Darryn... highest PPG, steals per game, 6th highest MPG, highest 3p%, second highest fg%, second highest ft%.
It doesn't matter if its a limited data set, imo. Those numbers speak.
The percentages are important, but the 1.7 steals per game is the interesting one to me. How much better is our perimeter defense (and also transition offense?) with Darryn on the court?
-
NC State will be tough in Raleigh. Well coached, athletic, and a program used to playing the big boys and going deep in march... the whole deal. Good tune up for the B12. If we win this one, we should be competitive in the B12.
-
NCState 0-3 against major conference opponents, undefeated against everyone else.
-
Peterson will make a difference on the perimeter defensively. His length & ability to steal the ball I think will show up as he gets healthy (hopefully). That stuff showed up on film from HS regularly, getting in passing lanes, anticipation, scraping down on drivers on help-side. We've seen that in limited fashion from games already. He's got active hands for sure.
Will also help on offense, he's a willing passer & probably has the best vision on the team so we should be excited what he can bring there as he plays more.

A few of NC State guys we were after in HS recruiting to some extent (Able, Holloman) to Williams (top target in portal).
McNeil is the main guy to lock in on from 3 (70% of attempts from 3) but isn't very efficient inside or outside. Williams & Holloman have been scary efficient from 3 so far so can't leave them open.
Williams is the matchup issue as we know from his time at Texas Tech. He had our number every single time we played against him over the past two years. White & Tiller have their hands full. Really the key to the game defensively is just trying to limit his impact not only as a scorer but playmaking. I haven't watched how they are using him but imagine they are letting him play somewhat of a Point Forward position.
They don't protect the rim well so that's good for our bigs and guards. This is not an easy game and KU will have to play well.
For KU, scoring and turnovers look like the main focuses. NC St averaging 8 steals a game (almost 4 more than KU). KU has to score at a decent clip in this one and hopefully we can get closer to 30+ minutes from Peterson in this one which would help in that department. This offense has to find a way to improve with DP back or it's not going to matter how good the defense is.

This will be a good test. Are we ready to start a new trend of winning on the road? It's one thing to win on a neutral court... and something completely different on their court.
We will have had several days rest and prep for this game, including the mixing of DP in the lineup. Just from the little bits of DP we've seen... he isn't going to be our quarterback. That position clearly goes to Melvin, who creates plenty of action to build his assist numbers. We need DP to score. There is a good article about Mel on kusports and how he has been the mvp of this team so far. I think DP will become that title eventually if he stays healthy because he'll get more pt and will get properly integrated in this team. Still... it will be close between these guys, while Tre does Tre. I said this weeks ago... he is our "silent assassin!" Melvin barks like a dog.. Tre bites! lol

Reportedly, Bill Self has said that Melvin Council has been "hands down" the MVP of the team so far. Thoughts?
Personally, I like Melvin a lot but I would give the nod to Tre.
-
I think council sets the tone and is a big part of why this team feels tougher than the last few. Dude always has the right energy.
-
Flory for me, then Tre.

I think Tre likes to be the silent assassin. Teams aren't focusing on him with double teams and their prime defender, so he can go get his almost at will. He's the best rebounding guard I think Kansas has ever had. And he's one of the few Jayhawks who understands how to draw fouls in our entire history. I acknowledge Frank and Devonte as being good at this, too... but not like Tre.
Mel is an energy/emotion guy! He turns it up most when receiving praise. And he does deserve plenty of praise!
I still can't get over Fran Fraschilla criticizing this group Self recruited from the portal. He always has to find something wrong with KU.
-
@drgnslayr Fran is usually a year behind reality.
-
Obviously I can only evaluate what is seen on TV in games (not practices, etc.) With that in mind, Melvin has been the most pleasant surprise. But from what I've seen, the tone is at least equally set by the energy of Tre and Flory.
-
Fran is getting dumber every yr! I can’t believe he knocked us on live tv!
-
Just a couple of things in comparison.---NC State is averaging 15 points more then us per game 89/74- - -averaging eight steals per and I think we get five - - --and they are shoot close to five percent better from the three.
Conclusion? -- - should be easy enough to remedy -- three keys : Take care of the ball , we have done pretty good with that only 10.9 per - --- as far as the scoring per again should be easy, we either got to be really aggressive on the defensive side of the end , get right in their grill/slow them from limit transition breakouts and run ourselves which I think DP can spear head that, then guard the three- - - -no easy open three's
-
Part of that point differential is tempo. According to kenpom NCSt plays with the 73rd fastest tempo in the country, which is one above-average. We play with the 254th fastest, which is one of the slowest.
-
Sounds like Darryn should be good to go
-
Was really hoping our tempo would increase this season with the athletes we have but that's not happening
-
Self presser said he practiced Tuesday (off day Monday for team) and no issues. Fingers crossed.
