UNI earned that win. We were intimidated by the pressure of the tourney and they were not. But there was some luck that factored into the outcome. They could not miss a three all game. A stat that has haunted me ever since was that their center, who had hit 1 career three before that game, went 2-3 from downtown against us.
UNI was 9-26 from 3, KU was 6-23 from 3 with our star player going 0-6. If Sherron shoots his average (37%), KU wins that game and likely wins a national title.

That shot by Ali was crazy, bet his coach was like “Nooooooo , yes!” But that’s the shot you take in the underdog. If I’m not mistaken that was and still is the highest rated 9 seed since KenPom started. They had zero business being anything worse than a 6. If I remember correctly they were ranked 23rd in the country going into the tournament. We got a favorable draw in 2022 but we have been hosed a lot. I read an article last season how KU has faced the highest rated KenPom team in just about every seed 9-16.

Maybe winning it all in 08 made it sting less in my mind just like this year and 22 still fresh in the memory. Zona in 97, Syracuse in 03 and Michigan in 13 feel a lot worse in my mind.

That 97 team is IMO the best team to not win a Natty in CBB history. Roy Williams has always said that’s the best team he ever coached. Crazy how some of that works out because I think you could argue that the two or three of best Kansas teams in my lifetime didn’t win it.
-
@wissox I’m still mad at Purdue for 1994. lol. Nearly every season ending loss stings. This year not so much.
-
@kjayhawks The injury to Jerrod Hasse was unknown to me until just recently in a podcast and it took away his deadly 3 ball for that game.
It’d require a lot of knowledge to say which was the best team to not win it all. One that comes to mind is Houston in 83 when Guy Lewis committed coaching malpractice by going into a stall to blow a comfortable lead to Clyde Drexler, Hakeem Olajuwan, etc. A college team with future Hall of Famers should win a natty and couldn’t pull it off a year later either.
-
@wissox oh for sure the greatest KU team to never win it is highly debatable as it is when you include everyone.
-
@kjayhawks No the highly debatable part you said I thought you were referring to all of college hoops. I think the 97 KU team is the best KU team ever. 85 could be argued for that title as well. That team beat national champ Louisville twice during the regular season. Never ranked worse than 9th
All of NCAA history, I just don’t know enough about the 40’s-70’s to make a best to not win declaration.

This year stings a lot to me because I thought we had a really good path to the EE had we played well and together. We may not get as favorable as draw as we did this season for another 5 or 10 years.
-
@kjayhawks eh. This season is quickly fading into the rearview for me, like a cloud of dust at a graveside service.
I very much want to see a roster we can be geeked about for next year to take shape quickly, at least the big pieces.
Last year can RIP
-
@kjayhawks That very well might be true but I think our 2020 team deserves that title, even if there were other teams with more dominant or better regular seasons in the discussion. The reason being that every other great team not to win a title failed on their own in the tournament. That 2020 team, on the other hand, was unfairly stripped of a chance to play for a title.

Yes this for sure makes the 2020 team the hardest pill to swallow.
-
@kjayhawks Oh I forgot about that one. Probably because it didn’t end with a difficult loss. I’ve often wondered if that team is allowed to play, and assuming they won, does that make it easier for guys like Och to go pro earlier and make 2022 less likely?
-
@wissox ha, yeah the seldom seen other side of the “its very hard to win it all” coin.
Very unlikely we would have won it all, and also, butterfly effect.
-
Lets go Vols!
-
#3 Florida v. #13 Arizona at 6 C on TNT. I usually listen to pregame, but I’m interested in both these teams. North Car at 6 also, so I guess I’ll record that. Yeah! Basketball
-
I haven’t heard if Canadian Rioux will play this year. He hasn’t played yet.
-
wherethey showing Carolina at ? Can’t find it , Florida beating Arizona fairly well up 10 – -- --BYU plays Villanova later
-
@SlimShaddy54 ACC Network
-
Zuby has 12 pts for the #5 Red Storm early in the 2nd half
-
Arizona holding onto a 4pt lead over #3 Fla. 3 min left. AZ pulling away: 9pt lead 2 min. Not to jinx it but it would be a nice Big 12 win
-
@stoptheflop nice. Won both halves
-
UNC starting front line 7.0, 6.10, 6.10.
-
@Zabudda The bigger they are, the harder they fall?
-
I think we should lean into the full-court press against UNC. Our team is built for it and UNC doesn’t have a true PG.

Hope so.
-
And slower
-
UNC- Greensboro beating K- Stink 22-12 at 8 minute mark in Manhattan.
-
At the half UNC -G 34, K-Stink -33
-
Duke’s defense looks good. Duke is also getting the calls again
-
K-Stink scored 60 points in the 2nd half.

Saying again insinuates they stopped at one point.
-
Some good matchups tonight. Michigan almost gets upset by Wake Forest. Illinois small lead over TTech. It’s wrapping up on FS1. 5 minutes to go. Creighton-Gonzaga playing. Louisville beats Kentucky, a result that looks good for us. BYU is only up 1 on Delaware with 10 minutes left.
-
TTech not shooting many FT’s but a strange flagrant call on Illinois gave them a chance but they missed the 3. Could have had a 5 point play to tie.
-
It’s cool to see TGF out there for Gonzaga. He’s an easy guy to root for.

I was so high on him coming here, it sucks in a way but glad he is playing.
-
Mark me as scared that the dook game will resemble the 2014 UK game especially without DP.
-
@FarmerJayhawk isn’t he 40 by now?
-
@FarmerJayhawk Man I was watching him play his first game at DePaul, me and about 100 other people were actually there and he mysteriously left the game and never came back. Since that game I’ve had two different cancers and organs removed, become a father in law, had 2 grand children, ran a halfmarathon, attended an elite 8 game that KU played in and won and took up a whole new sport called disc golf! That’s been a long time!
-
@wissox
you’ve lived a lifetime during TGF’s college playing days.
-
If he doesn’t play, it likely won’t be a competitive game.
-
@BeddieKU23 hard to think otherwise watching us and Dook at this point. With Dp it’s likely a 10-15 point loss without him it’s 25 plus IMO.
-
All we can do is hope for improvement and for the best. An opportunity for them to rise to the occasion against a good team. I will be pleasantly surprised if it’s a close game given what I’ve seen of both. If DP Doesn’t play or is limited once again it’s going to be rough for us fans…
-
@BeddieKU23 I still think we can grow into a solid team, we just have a long ways to go but heck the last few. years we beat a lot of high profile teams early because we were already what we were. While the others had a much higher ceiling
-
In the 90s we had “The Truth”. Now we have Nginyu “NGL” Ngala.
-
Texas A&M goes down tonight to UCF. Rylan Griffen zero pts on 0/4. Clemence has 12 in 17 minutes off the bench.
-
Coit dropped 19 points in a win over Marquette
-
KU women beat Missouri last night
-
Yeah Maryland so far a very good fit for diggy
-
A little context - Diggy is shooting 31% from 2 and 42% from 3. His effective field goal percentage is slightly lower than it was playing for KU last year (.512 vs .518). He is getting a little more than double the minutes and his stats (good and bad) have pretty much doubled as well. - I enjoyed Diggy, but if he’s getting 32.5 minutes per game something has gone wrong on the recruiting trail (Elmarko
️). I’m glad he’s getting his minutes, also glad it’s at Maryland.
