Swirling Bill Rumors

  • Ugh

  • @Kcmatt7 Yeah I think only complete bozos are actually rooting for him to leave.

    Amen

  • Yikes on the prospective list, say it isn’t so Bill!

Golden - sent pics of his junk to a co-ed

Oats - players facilitated a murder

    Beard - wife beater.

All very good coaches, but of very questionable character. Would prefer a better person help to lead the young players into adulthood.

Is Brad Steven’s really not an option?!? lol I know. I know…

  • Jay Wright, Tony Bennett, Jim Larranaga all made this decision.

If Bill decides to make it as well, hopefully it’s very soon to give the university appropriate time to replace him. I can’t say I’m overly thrilled with the replacement list due to the off court baggage attached to each of them and already gone back and forth on why all three could truly derail Kansas Basketball.

  • It would definitely make for interesting times in Lawrence. I was hoping he would get to assemble this team for next season and retire after a conference championship and deep tournament run.

  • @BShark there’s a lot of nuance here: the lines between wanting him to leave and knowing that it’s time are quite blurred. So, I don’t concur that people are bozos for wanting him to leave. There are also a lot of emotions seeing a 2o-year, twice champ, HOF, KU-goat coach come to the end of his tenure. I respect that.

And, I’m really not thrilled about a penis-pix stalker boy or a wife beater, so that leaves Oats of the 3 you mentioned. It’s a logical fit, but I hope more names emerge.

  • The truth will come out about Golden

  • I still think he does one more year personally imo. Wounds are fresh right now

  • Golden 39

    Oats 50

    Beard 52

    Self 62

IF Bill decides to retire I don’t want an old man that will at only effectively coach at KU a decade. I’d hope for a young up and comer like Bill was when he was hired. Or Roy before Bill. I still think by far the best scenario is for Self to come back reinvigorated.

I remember 14 years of Williams with zero championships. I remember the trouble LB caused the program, but also the championship he brought. I don’t remember this level of sustained success under any other coach. It’ll be a huge loss when Bill retires and he’ll be very difficult to replace.

Kansas math though, so KU should be better in the fans expectations.

  • Hopefully Bill realizes that him with DP is a better base than any new hire coming in fresh

Agreed. I’m sure he’s feeling it…disappointing year. Lost in the first round with his “sons.” Give em some time off and let him watch some DP highlights.

This tends to be my view as well.

He’s just emotional right now and I get it. The loss and the Flory news on top of it.

  • I would be good with Oats if Bill taps out. Not the others.

  • A lot rides on the flory meeting today.

That’s the crossroads I am at currently, we know Self has done a lot of good with this program but is he the guy to us going forward with NIL and Transfer portal?

  • My inside sources tells me Will Wade and NC state are hot on DP to flip to them. If that happens I’m hearing Self will announce his retirement. Lots of stuff going around right now in the rumor mill

  • FWIW I’ve heard as long as Coach Self is here…Darryn will be here.

Glad you’re hearing what I’m hearing on this.

Like I said Shark is my brother…but I’d just give Coach some time man. This has been a SEASON. I can’t imagine how taxing emotionally it was on the players and the staff…hell we feel it as a fanbase.

Kind of Self-inflicted though! ha. 🙂 or 😞

  • @Kcmatt7 If this turns out, yes this Season has turned out very costly. With rumor going around during the season about the unsettled locker room differences between players, Coach’s - then the bust with the portal, Fans riding Coach’s ass talking about how the game had passed him by , how he couldn’t develop players, how he couldn’t recruit, then the whole Flory portal , and then just the usual things they deal with on a daily basis.

That’s a lot for a Coach to deal with, and with Bil’s past medical issues , the stress of being on the road recruiting and then having to put up with these dam ever changing NCAA rules- - - - that’s a lot to put on any Coach. Had heard myself also and i put in my guess on when I thought he was done which was next year, but if he does this yr then - ----well what can you say been 20 plus years of really good ball and championships -I too like Kcmatt7 says really worry just how much this program falls

  • @rcjhdraft If Coach leaves , hope the hell not but if he does-- – then DP might very easily re think his decision with Coach gone and the player that he mentioned he most wanted to play with in the portal

  • Would Self entertain the GM position? Also heard somewhere Frank Mason is interested in becoming a member of the recruiting staff? FWIW.

  • @TYOHawk DP’s present coach mentioned many of his quality traits and one of them was his character. He also said he had great parents, I think that explains his loyalty.

  • Another name I would go get for an assistant coaching position is Sherron Collins. He just led Oak Park to a Missouri state championship amd we know he’s someone who bleeds crimson and blue.

  • @Gorilla72 said in Swirling Bill Rumors:

No, because a GM position in college basketball has nothing/very little to do with scouting or recruiting. A GM in college basketball manages the NIL/business side of the program which is what’s potentially driving Self into retirement.

  • Billy Boy doesn’t strike me as one who would like to bow out on a couple of flat tires. I could be wrong, but I say he sticks around a couple more years and rights the ship.

  • Self is not going out like this. He will coach this year, and then be done.

  • FWIW Florida’s Title IX office (hardly one to take the guys side in these things) cleared Golden

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 - My thought is that Self would be very good at fund raising and management. He could leave the higher stress jobs of recruiting and coaching to others (but still shake hands” with recruits).

  • That’s not his love, so I don’t think he’d do that.

  • @Gorilla72 said in Swirling Bill Rumors:

That side of the job is the whole reason Self is considering retirement right now and why Wright, Bennett, and Larranaga all retired despite being in very good jobs with access to top recruits/transfers and having all recently won national championships or been to Final Fours.

  • After talking to a couple people, we’re speculating that if the hire is in like a month, Oats might be the better choice since he’s more proven. If it’s in a year and Golden rebuilds and repeats, then that’s the call. Oats is just the safer choice at this point. Plus the Oats and Leipold Culver’s ads would RULE

  • Any of those three and I’m done. Plenty of decent humans who can coach our there

  • And FYI, Golden’s buyout is $13m, Oats’s is $18m. Neither is prohibitive especially when we won’t have to pay them Self type money

I’ve been saying that McLasland would really take over and be a class act

May is good along with McCollum but I understand he’s unproven and his style isn’t exactly great

  • @BShark said in Swirling Bill Rumors:

@Kcmatt7 Yeah I think only complete bozos are actually rooting for him to leave.

Putting his sons above the program in any business would be fireable

He’s the greatest KU coach of all time so he gets a pass but ignoring what he’s done these last two years is pretty insane

We can match IU’s offer so claiming Flory is all about the $$$ is completely ignoring all the signs that took place this year regarding his playing time

NBA talent sits behind g league or overseas player….that plus Bill’s style of play doesnt “attract” top talent. What attracts top talent is Adida$

I’d love for he, DP (transcendent talent), Flory and some good transfers to go out win the big 12 and at least make the final 4 heck pull a Melo win it all!

Been hearing this when the “trip” for sr night by Townsend took place but no one believed me……

With our two year downfall and internal turmoil plus not playing the best players - I mean as a parent I wouldn’t want my kid to walk into that situation for 1 year

That’s why I wanted him to retire because he isn’t cutout for this anymore and it’s really evident

I think the issue is he isn’t even bothering to think he did anything wrong. He still thinks the trio was his best options. Never 4 guards but instead play 3 five men

  • I remember how awful I felt after the ending in 2003. Kirk and Nick’s ending. Roy going back to his alma mater. Uncertainty on Bill or where the program I loved was heading. Change is certainly terrifying, but inevitable. Bill Self exceeded my hopes of Roy’s successor and I’m grateful that I got to go to school during his tenure. As he has said himself, the program is bigger than any one person. I would hope you don’t stop being a Jayhawk because you don’t agree or like a certain outcome. Regardless of what happens in the future use your voice and remember what made you love being a Hawk in the first place.

  • I’ll wait and see what happens. Time for a break
