Let’s talk Illinois
-
@wissox probably mostly local KU fans. Half the bars I used to frequent back (mostly O-street) in the day were chock full of Chicago co-eds.
-
@dylans What town were you from?
-
@wissox that was in larryville. I’m from sw Kansas. No Chicago influence here.
-
Well first off, it’s pretty dang cool to see the game sold out on the road like this. I honestly think this is a bigger game for Illinois than it is for us. People are thinking the seat on Bielema is gonna get hot if he misses out on a bowl game yet again this season.
They looked solid in a week one win vs eastern Illinois. Can Altmyer take the next in to becoming a serviceable B10 QB. They lost most of their top play makers in terms of backs and wide receivers but they have a strong offensive line which is a staple of a Bret Bielema team IMO. The game with in the game is can our mostly un proven front 7 get pressure?
I think this turns into a physical ole big ten slug fest. Winning the turnover battle against good teams is a must for the victor. The only reason we lost to OSU and Tech last season was turnovers so hopefully we learned a few things. I hope JD is able to use his legs some in this one, I think we may end up needing them. I hope we are able to control the line of scrimmage and Neal has another big outing. I like us to win in a close game. It still feels weird picking us to win a road game against a power conference team hopefully it becomes the norm.
-
Reading over at the Champagne Room they’re worried about our secondary, as they should be! They’re licking their chops because of our frontline and they think they have the o-line to do some damage. No news flash here for us. Hopefully we’ve improved. So their keys to victory on one side of the line is to establish the run, limit the damage Kobee and Mello can do (and aren’t they on the all name team for college football?!!) They seem to think if giving Altmeyer time he can also inflict some damage. I seem to remember him ripping off some decent runs against us last year.
On the other side of the line is where Illinois is worried. “offense as explosive as any in the country” was one line I read. Imagine that being written about our team!! They’re not real confident in their secondary stopping us. So they’re focusing on stopping the run game and think they might have some success there. TBH, the article on this aspect doesn’t have a lot of hope for Illinois containing our offense.
There’s a fairly strong pessimism here. Our secondary beats theirs, our skill positions beats theirs, our RB’s beat theirs, the war in the trenches is about even it looks like.
I’m predicting a KU 24-21 victory with in true Illinois fashion, they have a game tying 28 yard FG attempt that is good, but there’s a holding call and they miss the 38 yarder.
I’ve known of this game for 2 years now and am so hyped to be there and see the Jayhawks for the first time since seeing us get destroyed by the Oklahoma machine in 1987 to the tune of 71-10 on a cold miserable day, only made more miserable by the Jayhawks scoring their lone TD when I was walking to my car with the score 71-3.
-
I was looking at our seasons while I was at KU and noticed two years before I arrived we beat 10th ranked USC in LaLa Land. One of only 4 wins that season, how the heck did that happen?
-
The Illinois win last year seemed to kick off our great season. It wasn’t our best game by far. Tonight’s game is really big; a must win for me if KU is to have another great season. RC
-
@stoptheflop I agree. It’ll be the first non conference road win in in a long time. (If we win)

KU won at Nevada last season, won at Houston in 2022 and won at Boston College in 2019.
-
Line started as KU -6.5 now it is KU -3.5
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 Yep I believe we snapped the longest road losing streak in college football history vs Central Michigan in 2018. Coach LL in his first season KO’d CFB longest conference road losing streak against Texas in year 1. I believe LL 6 road wins in 3 years is more than any coach since MM. Gill had zero, Wise zero, Beaty 1 and Miles 1.
-
I sure hope KU doesn’t fall behind like the other Big12 teams did today. Just get me a 2 TD lead, play well and finish with no injuries.
-
Jesus JD looking like a middle schooler so far this season.
-
Fortunate to hold them to 3.
-
I sure think Jalon is running the ball too much. We have very good running backs.
-
@stoptheflop I hold my breath every time I see him running hoping that he is not hurt.

Disappointed with how the staff is using him. But also he shouldn’t be throwing lead blocks, and that was on him.
-
@stoptheflop he obviously can’t pass it anymore
-
FUMBLE!!
-
My goodness guys smh we are lucky to still be in it, I suppose that’s a positive
-
@kjayhawks Agree. Missed opportunities
-
Offense has to wake up, stop trying to throw the home run ball repeatedly. JD just isn’t ready at this point for that.
-
Nice 3 and out.
-
Way to go Devin. More of that please.
-
There you go JD get in sync buddy
-
Much better offense. Way to go.
-
@stoptheflop that’s Kansas offense, running the option, good accurate throws and 6
-
Oof
-
Wow, Illini the wheels fell off.
-
Can we get Jason Bean back?
-
No reason for that pass. Take a shot down the field to at least try to get a first down, or take a knee and punt. Inexcusable
-
Jesus that was huge swing 10 points 20 seconds. At this point was Bean better than JD? My god you can’t throw that when a guy is sitting there waiting on it 3 picks for JD in a game without playing the second half last week. It maybe Ballard time in Lawrence
-
Run the ball or throw it downfield. We miss AK
-
Wow. Well, hopefully thats rock bottom for JD and he bounces back.
-
The pick six looked like it was tipped by an Illinois linemen. Skinner probably would have dropped it though.
-
Well Notre Dame lost to E Illinois. Misery loves company. Really bad half for Jalon
-
@Kcmatt7 Agree. These 20 yard passes in the flat to gain 2 yards are ridiculous. Run it north-south, run the option, or throw it down the field
-
@approxinfinity well in all honesty we could was be down by 3 or 4 scores if not for the defense playing strong. This is what I get for giving Avery jazz about not throwing. Other than about 2 passes so far this season JD looks like dog crap at best. But yes we miss Coach K, need to run the damn ball. Neal 7 carries for 73 yards.
-
Noticeable lack of RPOs as well and JD was so good at that.
-
Jared Casey caught a pass (yay)
-
Fumble by Skinner really hurt. If he catches that pitch cleanly, probably a 20 yd gain
-
@Kcmatt7 option worked great let’s run it once and never again. With run plays, you run them til they can stop them.
-
@webjay ya skinner as a Senior can’t hang on to the dang ball go figure.
-
Ok, predicting a major momentum shift to start the half, maybe a a pick-6 by Bryant or Dotson?
-
@webjay I’m okay with a stop
-
Jalon just playing like crap, looking bad so far
-
@kjayhawks Defense did their job.
-
Run, run, run
-
Their kickers are solid
-
Run 3.333334 yards every play
