And if Furphy does leave KU will be a major player in the portal for that spot

I prayed for moments like this brother. Go get me Peterson and a few portal pickups and I’m dancing on the moon.

Oh yeah. I have mixed feelings on Peterson given his redshirt decision but no doubt he’s very talented. The way to do it might be to go to 13 next season then back down to 12 in 25-26

I just view it as a Malik situation to try not to get too deep into it. I’m just glad it seems from the outside KJ is down to do what’s best for the program and Hunt.

That’s a good way to think about it. And honestly having the depth to go hard in practice every day is underrated. I think a good amount of our issues on execution is because our starters don’t see much competition in practice

Judging talent and character in the portal is becoming one of the most important things in coaching (ISU a team full of transfers no one wanted) . I feel like we have had a ton of swings and misses the last few seasons. Even looking at the title team with Coleman-Lands and Yesifu to Cam Martin last season. Obviously we missed hard with Adams and Timberlake this season. The biggest issue with Nick is supposedly we had Cam Spenser but Bill veto’d him for Timberlake. That is all part of the reason I’d like to see some staff changes this offseason.
-
@kjayhawks -“ The biggest issue with Nick is supposedly we had Cam Spenser but Bill veto’d him for Timberlake.” I’ve not seen this anywhere. Do you have a link?
-
Nick committed a month before Spencer entered the portal.
-
@FarmerJayhawk - Thanks!
-
@Gorilla72 no sir, just what I heard from an individual. That’s why I put supposedly. Could be fact or fiction @BShark or @FarmerJayhawk maybe able to confirm or deny such
-
@FarmerJayhawk looks like you solved the riddle @Gorilla72 either way it was a humongous miss
-
-
@kjayhawks - KU would have had to wait 30+ days, without knowing Spenser was entering the portal. Additionally, he seems to like the East Coast- Loyola Maryland to Rutgers to UConn. That being said, it would have been nice to have him.
-
@BShark for real?
-
@Crimsonorblue22 Clearly a joke!
-
-
@BShark well it’s been suggested he was entering the portal.

Almost happened last year

I’m trying not to think about Harrison Ingram anymore.
-
@BShark as a Heels fan he’s been a ton of fun to watch. But also makes me sad lol
-
Bill dipping into JUCO again perhaps.
-
Part of me is happy to see this as Self is going all in leaving no stone unturned

Nwankwo, intriguing
From Lawrence, KS originally. Athletic. Started out playing football at Tulane.

Of note he has a do not contact designation. I would expect KU to be involved but we shall see.
-
@BShark What do you mean by “do not contact designation” ?

When kids enter they can put that on there so schools are not supposed to contact them. The kid/his people have to initiate contact with the school first.
-
@BShark hypothetical - And what’s to stop a Kelvin Sampson from making contact anyway? Could be off putting or could be a deal of he’s the only one who wanted me bad enough to reach out. lol recruiting is weird these days.

Not sure, but I’d assume some kind of penalty. But yeah given that we knew he was likely to enter and there was talk KU was involved, I’m guessing KU has already been talking to him sooo…

Oklahoma or KANSAS per trusted source.
-
@BShark Would you rather play for the team gearing up for the NCAA Tournament or the one declining the NIT bid?

I’d say Oklahoma currently leads, due to what KU already has at the position.
-
The Small Dooley connection could come in handy

Hoping so. He’s good enough for 6th man solid minutes at the very least.
-
Garrison would definitely help this team next year, long term as well. Lots of promise there. Won’t lose sleep here until there’s some real action though. Good to see we are kicking lots of tires already

This ^^^^
Remember when we used to talk about our bench - the second five — being able to beat some of the teams on the schedule?
The years we’ve had depth and experience are the some of the years we have done best in the tourney. The portal is going to make that really hard to replicate.
-
Kansas is also looking at Tarris Reed. Bill is hell bent on a third center. Injury insurance + going into the year after with two guys that have program experience. So I would not expect any one year left guy at that spot.

@FarmerJayhawk Absolutely not LOL
-
Improved on volume and more minutes but the FG% and FT’s are a concern. As your “2nd big” he’d probably be good enough. Hard to get excited about Michigan players given the coaching they got the past few years. Former top 35 recruit…
-
I would pencil in Furphy at the 3 next year. Seems pretty unlikely he leaves, though it would behoove him to test

Heard the same thing I did I’m guessing.
Parents want him back unless he gets a lottery promise.
-
@BShark how does NIL work according to time? Like is it yr round, do they get monthly payments? Graduates stop after season or is it a from beginning of bb til end? I have no idea.

I assume you mean “parents want him back in school unless…”
Regarding NIL, I think I recall a discussion about how the NIL doesn’t apply to Furphy because he is an Australian citizen. I’d like to understand that more and whether there is work underway for next year to make sure he gets a fair share. Anyone know about that?

Furphy is on a student visa, and because our immigration system is dumb international students can’t earn outside income except in very limited circumstances (e.g. be a lab research assistant). However, that restriction does not apply when he’s back home (also possibly not in the U.S. but I’d need to look into that more). So he can get money at home or possibly when we go to Mexico City for the Houston game (still, ick) next season.
