2024 recruiting thread

Adams now ranked #29th after today’s update in the 24 class.

Why he moved: Out on the West Coast, nobody in the class of 2024 made a bigger impression for a move up the rankings than Marcus Adams Jr. did. A 6-foot-8 wing with the ability to play inside or out, he’s got plus athleticism, deep range on his jumper and some real swagger to the way he plays the game. The buzz began with some monster performances for Harbor City (Calif.) Narbonne during the fall and then Adams spent the winter lighting up scoreboards all across Southern California. There’s a chance that he could end up reclassifying to 2023 but for now he’s planning to play during the spring and summer and if what he did during the high school season translates, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him make another leap.

Ha, I’ve driven by his high school a lot, as my mom lives a block or two away. If I head down there soon I’ll stop by and give him a pitch to become part of the Jayhawk family!

  • @jayballer67 It’s tomorrow, 247 just didn’t have the right time set.

  • So if Marcus decides to come in 20232 then , he joins El Marko - - Johnson - - McDowell - - - Right ? - -Man what a class that would be

  • UCLA beat writer for 247 is down bad lmao

  • I can’t believe we got him. Pinch me.

  • From Dushawn London article: “ I chose Kansas because of the NIL opportunities , the coaches, and they really sound like they need and want me,” he said. “Coach Self reached out to me and said I want you to play for me and that he wants to coach me. Hearing that from a coach of his status and him reaching out directly is a really big deal that I couldn’t turn down.”

NIL money must be good! Listed as the first reason.

A big wing who can make deep jumpers, create, rebound, and finish above the rim. Had a 50/20 game. Might be 2023 or 2024 but I’m guessing we’re hoping for 2023 since we’re likely losing Jalen, Gradey, and McCullar after this season. Has a younger brother named Maximo Adams who is one of the better players in the 2026 class.

    Very cool

  • I’ll take credit for this one! Felt the good juju after learning he played down the street from my family in SoCal.

  • I think I’d rather have Adams stay in 2024 unless he’s fine coming off the bench for a year.

  • Shocked we won this battle tbh but good to see our NIL game is on point to win these kind of battles for prospects in other’s backyards.

I agree I’d rather have him in 24 and attack the portal to get the 2 starters we need but perhaps we’ll see the numbers still work out anyway where that happens and Adams still ends up in 23. I’ll be interested to see when he plans to make that decision, he has said he’ll play AAU which I’d rather him get to KU as soon as he can.

Long term his potential is good but there is some worry initially. He hasn’t played a lot of top competition in HS or in grassroots. Perhaps it won’t matter but there may be an adjustment period for him you might not expect with the #29 ranked player. We’ll see

  • One thing to mention, if he doesn’t reclassify to the 23 class I wouldn’t be surprised if he had 2nd thoughts at some point. It’s a long time to be committed and have people in your ear telling you otherwise.

So it’s probably best we get him in this class and figure out the numbers.

  • @BeddieKU23 the plan from both sides is 23. Whether he can get that to happen seems to be somewhat up in the air. Important to note 23 is his natural class so he wouldn’t be coming in super young like most reclasses.

His brother is also an absolute STUD, will end up a 5* imo.

It’s nice to see us going into Cali again. We are in a GREAT spot with Vyctorius Miller as well.

  • @BShark

Good stuff and agree with it all.

Definitely want him to end up back in 23.

  • @BShark I can’t find much tape on MA jr. Can you post some?

Sounds great BShark , hope he can get into 223. I realize one article I read said Adams in some cases hadn’t played the stiffest comp - , BUT still read where he cored 50 points and 20 rebounds in one game. I don’t care who your playing that’s a night. - Also read about his brother think he is 6’6 guard - Alexo ? - nice to have an in road possibly on that too.

Again like you mentioned p pwe are in a really good spot with Miller also love it.- Thing is if Adams re-classifies how tht sit us up with Scholi’s ? - would Miller be 23/24 ? - -I think he is 24 right ?

Mostly dunks in these videos but from what I’ve heard good shooter, solid handle (esp for a guy we will ask to play the 4), above average athlete. No real elite trait right now.

Lmao Bill really just going to roll the ball out with Juan and 4 athletes next year and dare you to beat him.

Regarding Marcus Adams, he’s really going to fit in that 3rd wing/Rebounder/break starter role that Jalen has played the last two years. Love that he has some bounce. His stroke looks high and quick. I do think he’s lacks lateral agility. He’s going to struggle to create his own shot at this level, but luckily he will get to play with Juan and KJ who will do a lot of hard work for him. Question for him will be can he defend at this level as a freshman. Long-term, he basically is a lock to be a stud.

The thing they are really missing next year is just a guy who has proven he can shoot at this level. Low key think Zeke Mayo fits perfectly now if they can actually get him…

    • PG: Harris-33/Elmark - 5/Bobby - 2

    • Wing 1: Elmarko - 25/Johnson - 10/Yesufu - 5

    • Wing 2: Mayo - 25/Johnson - 15

    • Wing 3: Rice-25/MAdams - 15

    • Post: KAdams-25/Udeh-15

Bill needs to put the full court press on to keep Rice, imo. Hope that relationship isn’t beyond repair. I really think if you can get some steady scoring from Mayo and Rice the freshman will collectively provide you with the rest of what you need.

On paper, this is a stellar roster. They obviously lack experience, but it helps having Juan. You could theoretically still be starting a Senior, two juniors, and a Sophomore. Not “young” necessarily. But not “old.” Providing you get Mayo and keep Rice. Both things I would consider up in the air.

I do think this sort of puts us in a box with KJ and Udeh. Not sure there is going to be a better option on the market in the post than those two next season.

    Good stuff tbh.

  • @Kcmatt7 I don’t think Udeh gets less than 25 minutes a game next year. KJ will be playing Post and wing 3. I would be SHOCKED if we don’t see KJ playing alongside Udeh for extended minutes.

This is what makes me nervous about keeping Rice in general. If we pull in a high caliber, experienced transfer, they will be in direct competition with Rice and Elmarko for starting spots. Based on what I’ve read, it seems likely Elmarko will start. Self Starters generally get 30-35 Minutes a game with the exception being big post players who may not have the conditioning to do so. Zuby is going to get some run next year for sure.

I think it’s more likely we go after 2 big-time transfers. They should be on the lookout for a big versatile defender and another who can fill it up. Maybe we find one who can do both?

  • @Kcmatt7 The kid is going to need some humbling. Getting T-d up for barking at a kid 8 inches shorter than him is a little bit disconcerting to me.

  • @benshawks08 Not a chance KJ plays extended minutes anywhere but the 5. Maybe spot minutes at the 4 like this season, but he does not have the shooting range to play outside in Self’s 4 guard system for extended stretches, especially if the other big next to him is also exclusively a post scorer.

As far as transfers go, Self has to bring in a high level scoring 3 or 4 and even then, KU is still going to be largely dependent on freshmen to fill the scoring void KU is going to have next season. And if that pisses someone on the team off, that’s good because it’ll either motivate them to get better and fill that void, or they leave and KU is rid of dead weight. Or Self deals with the growing pains of having an extremely young team that will struggle to score points and have some very rough nights next season.

That second option doesn’t fit Self’s MO of wanting to stay as old as possible though so I think it’s much more likely that Self brings in at least one transfer and likely two transfer capable of starting at the 3 and 4 spots for next season.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 I agree he’s surely looking for scoring wings in the 6-5 to 6-8 range but I think a lot of people overestimate Self’s commitment to any one system. His greatness and consistency has come not from getting the best guys to fit his system but instead adapting his system to fit his best guys.

KJ is scoring 10 points a game as a sophomore who, if you’ve listened to Self talk, is playing out of his natural position. I wouldn’t be shocked at all to see KJ slide into a Kevin McCullar type role next year of being the defend everyone wing. I think KJ will be a better rebounder when he’s allowed to attack the glass with his athleticism rather than having to get position on a guy 5 inches taller than he is. He’s shown some ability to drive, pass, and even started looking more confident in taking some jumpers (not out to the 3 line for sure).

I’d just be baffled if Self doesn’t believe KJ and Udeh are two of KU’s best 5 players next year. He will put the 5 best players on the floor and figure out a system to make that work. That’s why he’s the best in the business.

According to UCLA posters off their boards -they are saying that Adams was saying he is a ONE & DONE - -I don’t think he is that god - but some kids have it in their heads that’s EXACTLY wha they are going to do no matter what. - -We will see

I’m the opposite…I’d be shocked if KJ and Udeh started together. I dunno how you can afford to have two non threats from deep on the floor in the modern game.

  • Wll maybe long shot - -BUT who knows - -final five for the # 2 player in the 2024 class. - -Dylan Harper -# 1 Combo - - probably Duke but neve say Harper .
