Jayhawks in the pros

  • Cheick played 3 minutes and scored 2 which is half as much as Josh Jackson scored in 21 minutes. JJ’s time must be running out soon. Detroit is 5-24 and he’s hardly played at all since tonight. To me Josh was a kid who didn’t belong in college. He seemed indifferent, had some decent moments I guess, but the rules should have let him go pro. Not sure his problem this year, but again, hardly any PT, goes falling from covid right and left and he still has trouble getting minutes.

  • Nice night for Kelly Oubre with 23, back from a starting role to a sub, but got 32 minutes in the victory. He’s indispensable to that team. Joel Embiid played well but the Sixers lost and are a disappointing .500. The prima donna Ben Simmons can be blamed as his petulent ways have cost the Sixers a chance at being a powerhouse. We want to see Joel win a ring and I thought they had a decent chance with that duo.

  • I feel bad for Joel. He needs a PG to get that ring.

  • Wiggins is one Jayhawk with whom I expected a lot more success in NBA. To me he has underperformed in the league.

I am not sure if this is related to lack of effort or what but wish he could have translated once in a decade type of talent and athleticism he possesses.

  • @AsadZ I guess definition of success is a little vague!! Starter since day 1, 19.5 PPG career average, 4 boards, 3 assists, 42% 3 point shooter this season at least. And starting alongside Stephen Curry on one of the best teams in the league.

I do understand where he’s probably not heading for the HOF or even all star teams that he may be considered a bit of a disappointment, but of all our great players he’s one of relatively rare ones during the last 30 years that has been a steady presence in the league.

  • @wissox I concur that he has been consistent this year. My point is that with his talent he should have been a multi year All Star by now.

The problem with Wiggins in Minnesota was that he, along with Towns, were expected to be the alphas of the team. As we saw during his year here at KU, Wiggins doesn’t have an alpha dog mentality. He’s much better in a supporting role which is what his job is at Golden State where Curry and Draymond are the alphas of that team so Wiggins can just go out and play without worrying about being a leader.

Josh Jackson is the player I’m more surprised about because I thought he was the better overall player at KU than Wiggins was, and he has an alpha dog mentality, but I don’t know if it was a work ethic issue with him or not, but his career has been much more lack luster than I think most people here would’ve predicted.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 My memories of JJ were some minor legal problems, weed maybe? Forgive me if I’m wrong, but character issues may be what’s weighing him down which is really sad. I’ve always guessed that was his issue.

  • Everyone is talented in the NBA. I never was blown away by Wiggins physical gifts as being some level above everyone else. I’m in the “Andrew did just fine and is a fine piece of the puzzle on a good team” camp

  • It’s hard when your OAD classmate is the unheralded Joel Embiid. What about Jabari Parker? For a while he was touted as the jewel of that crop. He’s got one foot out of the league. Andrew did just fine.

  • Wiggs went overall #1 in 2014 draft, Joel was #3.

Joel could have gone #1 but there were some injury concerns if I recall.

  • I never understood how anyone ever expected Simmons to be anything other than the piece of crap who bailed on his LSU teammates.

    Character will out.

  • @wissox JJ had more than minor trouble in the nba. He had a kid and smoked pot around the baby, the mom tried to charge him. He was also at a concert and tried to get back stage and I think escaped from a cop and ran off to get back there, thinking he was more important than he was. I can’t remember the exact facts but some really bad screw ups. Seems like last yr or the yr before he got it back together, but he’s not seeing much time this yr. he may be a dawg on the court but he can’t do it off the court, no control! Really sad!

  • @mayjay Don’t know if you remember but I was in Baton Rouge the Ben Simmons season. All year I kept thinking I hadn’t seen anyone like that since Danny Manning. I don’t blame him for the LSU experience so much because he clearly didn’t want to play in college. But his lack of competitive drive in the heat of the moment was startling. I was fortunate to be in a rare sold old PMAC for a game against OU and senior yrmear Buddy Held. Buddy led a big comeback and in the last 5 minutes Ben didn’t take a shot. Fans were pretty pissed. Ben had an interesting teammate Keith Hornsby who was the son of rockstar Bruce Hornsby who would come to quite a few of the games. He was a decent player. The last interesting tidbit was a guy hollered at me because I was wearing my KU stuff. We started talking and he was the KU grad who made the rules of basketball documentary for ESPN’s series 30 for 30. He was making a documentary about Simmons that aired on showtime. I filled his ear about my opinion about Simmons.

  • @Crimsonorblue22 thanks you’re always good for the inside scoop on the Jayhawks.! I knew there was some tough stuff. Michael Vick and he got in trouble together didn’t they? Wow Michael Vick what a wasted talent. I remember after one NCAA game my bro in law asked me “who is that guy?” It was one of his high flying alley oop games. Was so disappointed he let himself down and us too.

  • @wissox LaGerald 🙂 Michael Vick was that Ron Mexico QB guy who liked to dog fight.

LaGerald definitely couldn’t get out of his own way. Running down the court after making a 3, jabbing himself in the temple and staring at the crowd while the other team got out on the break drove me nuts.

  • Wiggins was the consensus No. 1 ranked prospect in his high school class, and he remained at the top even after he reclassified and went to college a year early. Before his sole season at Kansas even began, he was widely considered the eventual No. 1 overall pick, having drawn comparisons to LeBron James and Tracy McGrady and even being bestowed with the nickname “Maple Jordan.”

Lol. Wish I had heard Maple Jordan sooner.

  • @approxinfinity Hah, good catch, Michael, Lagerald, covid must have my brain a little foggy.

  • @wissox lagerald vick?

  • @wissox I think this mental fog is the only white Christmas we can all share

Btw to the people who think Andrew hasn’t lived up to expectations, I thought this article painted an excellent picture of a 26 year old who is still improving.

There are 3,484 players who have played at least one minute in the NBA since 1985, according to our historical RAPTOR database. Of those players, only 556 recorded at least one season with a positive RAPTOR rating on both sides of the ball while playing at least 1,000 minutes per 82 team games. Among that group of 556, just 50 did not post that first two-way positive season until at least their eighth year in the leaguee

  • I love Wiggs! I think he gets better as his body matures into a mans body. He’s not a dawg, but God has gifted him with multi athletic abilities and he’s worked on his shot. He’s pretty dang smooth!

  • Svi got some PT tonight and took advantage scoring 10. But his team got destroyed by the Cavs who scored 83 in the 2nd and 3rd quarters alone. Another amazing stat was Cleveland taking 52 3 pointers, making 22. Goodness how this game has changed. Garrett got one point for the Heat. Covid is giving our guys some PT. Joel Punished the Wiz with 36 and 13. DG had a nice game but lost with 15 points and 8 gifts. Cheick almost had a double double with 9 and 9, but JJ didn’t appear in the box score, I guess he’s in the protocols. SA blew (out) a Piston. DD can’t find PT in Chicago even with guys out. Marcus Morris is coming back after sitting out for Covid. I’ve got 3 more days and I’ll be able to begin to play again.

So glad your about to come off the Covid lol. - -What position they got you playing now? - Your such a versatile guy lol. - Who you playing for aGain wasn’t it the Wizards ?

  • No I’m playing for the bulls.

Lol ahh that’s right. I remember that now. Man seen you dunk on that Dudes face mercy hell of a play lol

  • Oubre had 18 in an easy win over the pitiful Rockets.

  • Malik Neuman signing 10 day contract with Cleveland

  • @wissox Thx. I had been wondering where he was. Found this from a site sourcing The Athletic:

Newman is averaging 17.8 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.9 assists in 27.3 minutes over 13 games this season in the G League for the Cleveland Charge.

    Nice production.

  • @mayjay G League numbers seem to mean little. DDotson’s has gigantic stats, like 20 points, 7 boards, 7 assists, nearly 3 steals per game. Yet even with Covid the Bulls can’t use him.

  • Garrett like numbers tonight. 1-7 shooting 5 boards, 3 steals. Not quite over. Embiid putting up big numbers again.

  • Apparently Cleveland started 3 footers tonight.

  • It is great to see Marcus getting decent minutes.

  • If only Wiggins could be turned up like he gets playing Cleveland or his old team. He’s done nothing wrong in the league but certainly not a generational talent like he was hyped to be. I think he’s having perhaps his best season in the league with GS and it helps they are one of the best teams in the league. I’ve been impressed every time I’ve seen him this season

  • Mario signs a 10 day with the heat! Newmann contributes to a Cavs loss with 8 points.

    That is awesome! Super Mario!

  • Quentin getting some minutes with the Knicks but they’re ugly minutes. After a debut with 27 points, he’s really struggling to score, and nearly every basket he’s made has been outside the arc. Thinking his time is short in the Garden. Rather see them giving Selden minutes.

  • BenMac had a big game against his former team (Lakers).

  • @AsadZ said in Jayhawks in the pros:

28 points but his team got blown out.

Wonder why Q is getting minutes over Wayne. He had at least had one good statistical year, what with Memphis awhile back?

  • @rockchalkjayhawk Well I think Q is a decent player. He took his team with others of course to the final 4 last year. Wayne and him would be about even I’d guess. Not totally sure.

  • Embiid 31 points, 15 rebounds, 10 assists in 30 minutes. Guy’s unreal

  • @Crimsonorblue22 Wow Josh been having himself a game against the Bucks. 24 points, 5 boards, 5 3’s made.

  • It was pointed out in the game chat that Devonte went off in the 2nd half. Ended up with 28 points and 6 assists but couldn’t beat the Suns.

  • Big game in Charlotte for Oubre who makes 9 threes and scores 32 over JJackson and Detroit who scored 15. Curry is in a shooting slump and Wigs is leading the team in scoring with only 12 in the 3rd. Embiid scores 31, but what else is new?

  • Kelly hit eight of his nine threes in the fourth quarter, part of a Hornets team record of 24 treys.
Wiggins ended up with a team high of 17 in a Golden State loss to Dallas, on the night they retired Dirk Nowitzki’s number.
As for Embiid, that’s five straight games with 30 or better.

  • Wiggins led a Curryless Warriors over a cold shooting DG tonight with 21 points. Seems like he’s the 2nd scoring option on that team.

  • Doke played 16 minutes, 2 points, missed 1 FT (surprise!) 3 boards and a block. His opponent Svi didn’t play but 2 scoreless minutes. That was his first action in a while, wonder if he was out for covid? Joel did Joel things. He has 6 30+ point games in a row.
