No shit, Sherlock!

  • Thank god we don’t have to watch him eat his mask every time he inhales.

  • I hope he finishes like 4th in the league and saves his job again. Trademark Bruce

  • I had one KSU friend of mine say they should hire Shane Southwell. After I composed myself after spitting out my beer I begged him to send a strongly worded letter to AD Taylor selling that move

It works great until it doesn’t. Still wild to me that KSU hired him.

  • I think it’d be great if KState became relevant again in basketball. I miss a good rivalry game now that Missouri is gone and KState has gone to seed. There are very few annual games on the schedule that have me looking at my calendar hoping there’s no conflicts, etc.

On a side note, and I’m glad no one has done it on this small thread but it bugs me a lot when adults mock someone for their looks, or in Bruce’s case his voice. I’d guess he doesn’t like sounding like that and when people make up little nicknames for him it just is a tad juvenile.

  • @wissox The games when Frank Martin was there were always tough. He had some dudes.

  • @BShark Yeah, those were some intense games. Always surprised his teams didn’t make more noise nationally. Of course he gets SC to the final four of all schools which must have really irked the KState folks.

  • I also miss having a tougher battle with the kitties. Bruce just simply can not recruit!

I’m already looking ahead to having new blood in the league… like Houston, Cinc and BYU. Curious how this plays out. Glad Texas will be gone. Always hated going to Austin to empty arena. Will miss OU.

  • @drgnslayr I wonder if Chris Beard is going to regret coaching in the SEC. He had great teams to face nearly every night in our league and a very supportive home base. At Texas, he’s coaching where bball is the side show to gulag football, and instead of playing in front of rabid fans in most B12 locations he’s going to Starkville, and Gainesville, and Athens, and Nashville, etc etc in front of ‘yawn, I guess I’ll go to the LSU game tonight’ fans.

  • @BShark He did have some dudes, and was building something. I’ve wondered a time or two if he regrets going to South Carolina.

I doubt Beard will regret that move. Texas has more resources than Tech for basketball including and brand new arena opening next season as they move into the SEC. Under Arnour is also currently in the process of minimizing their apparel deals as they’re currently in litigation with UCLA over UA trying to get out of that deal. With Nike support, expect recruiting at Texas to be a very high level and UT to consistently land highly rated recruiting classes. Austin is also a the biggest city in the country without a Big 4 pro team so NIL deals in Austin are going to become very lucrative because of the lack of competition from pro sports.

Outside of KU, it’s not exactly like other B12 schools are known for constantly packing their arenas either. A Texas/TCU game on a Saturday afternoon isn’t going be a sell out whether played in Austin or Ft. Worth. The only places in the B12 I would consider to have rabid fan bases are KU, ISU, and sometimes WVU. That’s not much different than the SEC with UK, Tennessee, and sometimes Florida.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10

I see the potential for Texas. Must have been quite a carrot offered to Beard.

I can see Texas giving a big challenge to UK. And the luster has worn down with Calipari.

So how will this play out in the SEC? One conference game between UK and Texas during the season and a possibility in their conference tournament?

Will a winning UT bring in the crowds in Austin?

  • Question for all:

So is this the team that can take it to Villanova? Do we finally have the guards who can stay composed while being nailed with perimeter defense?

There’s very few programs that consistently sell out games that aren’t high profile match ups even among top ranked programs. I don’t even believe Kentucky or UNC sell out every game even when they’re elite.

Having a top rated team like Beard should have combined with the new arena should give UT a higher % of capacity since the arena will only seat about 10,000 for most games compared to the 16,000+ Erwin holds.

  • KSU hired a guy that was going nowhere.

Frank Martin was a much better coach, but KSU fans didn’t like his attitude because they wanted someone like Bill Snyder. They got someone with that type of personality, but he can’t win games, so there’s a lesson in that somewhere.

On top of that, Weber can’t recruit, so he’s always going to be inconsistent. He will sometimes stumble into talent, like he had with Dean Wade and that group, but not consistently. He’s just good enough to not get fired, but never good enough to make his team a consistent factor. He probably finished 5th in the conference, then steals a game in the NCAA tournament to save his job. Or they are as bad as the roster looks, and he gets canned 10 minutes after they lose in the Big XII tournament.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 Heard Beard has been working hard sending individual messages to season ticket holders, etc. to get the fans in the building for games. They just had their biggest crowd for a season opener in like 20 years and it was against Houston Baptist so Beard and the talent he brought in is already a draw. We will see if that novelty wears off. But I think if they win they can sustain a solid crowd. Not sell out every night type crowd but good enough to actually make the place fun. Hoping the smaller arena contributes to that as well. Right now, even a sold out crowd for a top 5 match up with KU is fairly dull in my experience. They need some education on how to cheer for basketball games. Maybe Beard could host some classes.

I believe I said this earlier but basically this works great until it doesn’t. Eventually the school realizes it is the same old same old and there will be the drastic dips which they find unacceptable (Illinois). Bruce before KSU called was going to coach College of Charleston, a much better level for him imo.

That’s not what happened at all at KSU with Frank Martin. Their fan base was mostly pissed off about his firing because the only year Martin missed the NCAA Tournament was his second year. Frank Martin was fired because he didn’t get along with the John Currie who was KSU’s AD at the time.

  • Texas is going to own Calipari. He’s toast - my prediction - in about three years.
