Coach Hot Seat and Players to Poach
-
I’m just going to throw this out there. I did not include any seniors, as I don’t really know if there is an extra year of eligibility for guys or not and I’m too lazy to try to figure that out. So this is all Juniors or younger.
- Mike Brey - Notre Dame
I think it is probably time for Notre Dame to move on. This will be the fourth consecutive season ND missed the tournament. Not a single recruit in the top 100 coming to Notre Dame. Brey is 61 years old, and while some guys have been successful well past that age, I think it would benefit ND to bring in some fresh blood.
Nate Laszewski is their leading scorer and a Junior. He is putting up 15 and 8 and just absolutely lighting it up. Shooting .519 on 3.5 threes per game and .637 from the field on 8 shots a game.
Of course I’m sure that it is tough to poach guys from prestigious schools like ND, but still worth keeping an eye on.
- Jim Christian - Boston College
One winning season in seven years. It seems inevitable.
I honestly am not sure there is a poachable player on this team. CJ Felder I would take a look at, but everyone else is a hard pass. Felder is a 6’7 forward, explosive athlete, and seems pretty coordinated. Putting up 10 ppg, 6 rbds, and two blocks while shooting .700 from 2pt range (and a respectable .360 from 3). If I’m being honest, he seems like Bill Self would drool over him if he became available.
- Dave Leitao - Depaul
125-139 as of today at Depaul. Dead last in the Big East this season.
I would not touch anyone on this roster with a 10-foot pole. Charlie Moore is the leading scorer as many here are aware. That should tell you all you need to know.
- Tim Jankovich - SMU
He may live to see another season. But he inherited a good situation and hasn’t done much with it.
Kendric Davis is scoring 17, assisting 7.5, getting 1.5 steals a game and notching 4 rbds. Former TCU player has carved out a role at SMU. He is 5’11, but despite that he has been able to finish over .500 from 2pt range the last two seasons. He’s above .300 from three, but not his strong suit. I’d take him in a heart-beat. But that is all that really intrigues me on that roster.
- Josh Pastner - GT
I don’t know how Pastner kept his job this long tbh. Overdue to go.
Michael Devoe is a high volume 40%+ shooter from three. Scoring 16 ppg last year and 13 ppg this season. Instant offense.
- Richard Pitino - Minnesota
He’s been on the hot seat for years. I don’t know who Minnesota thinks they can get to replace him, but the rumor is out there.
Not sure anyone on this roster really gives me the warm fuzzies. Just a wildly inefficient bunch.
- Mark Turgeon - Maryland
I’d have moved on from Marky Mark years ago. They were good last year, but then immediately nose-dived this year. I think it would probably be good to get some fresh blood in.
There might be a few guys, but really the gem would be Donta Scott. 13 and 7 forward that is shooting .470 from three on 4 attempts a game. Also an above the rim athlete. Absolutely 100% would take.
- Archie Miller - Indiana
IU basketball is just in a sorry state of affairs. And nothing that Archie has done in his time there is land Romeo Langford. He may get another year. He may get two. He may get the COVID pass. But he hasn’t done much to inspire is all I’m saying.
Trayce Jackson-Davis is good. Would take. 20 ppg (54% fg) , 9 rbds, 2 blocks. Yes please. Armaan Franklin is shooting .455 from 3 on 4 attempts a game, which is obviously always intriguing.
Please add to this list and also obviously criticize it.
-
Penn State situation is one to monitor. Jim Ferry will likely be replaced as he is only the interim head coach. Myreon Jones is putting up 16 ppg and shooting .440 from three on six attempts per game.
-
I’d be curious what South Carolina is thinking with Frank Martin… Outside of the fluke run, he really hasn’t done much. Was better at KSU honestly.
Nobody really you’d want off of that roster though.
-
Is the Mike Hopkins experiment at Washington over?
Is Quade Green worth looking at if so?
-
What does Arizona State do with Bobby Hurley? He had the horses this year and just absolutely flopped. Really hasn’t done much despite having plenty of talent to win there.
Does Marcus Bagley play himself out of the first round the rest of the season? If so, does he go? If he doesn’t, with immediate eligibility you’d think he would be a hot commodity. But i’d also look at Alonzo Verge or Josh Christopher on that team.
-
Is it time for Jim Larranaga to retire?
Isaiah Wong is putting up 17 a game and grabbing 5.5 rebounds… Mostly from 2 and the FT line. Maybe something this team could use.
-
What has Kevin Keatts done to keep his job?
-
Really solid Thread starter. I’m guessing most of these guys get another year due to the financial issues surrounding covid.
Kendrick Davis is a want. Scott would fit here. Dont see any of the Big 10 schools moving on from their coach besides Penn St guy. Minnesota has been ranked and Maryland has beaten several ranked teams.
Jackson Davis is an NBA guy after this year. Franklin can really sling it from deep.
Bagley and Christopher seem like they would go league before another college year.
I’ll add more to this when I have the chance
-
Wong from Miami is very good
-
Myreon Jones would be an elite get. Not a big assist guy in his role there but 44% from 3 and his athleticism would play
-
Matt Bradley of Cal is one I’ve had my eye on. 4th leading scorer in the Pac-12. Deep range on his jumper, finishes at the rim, has a complete offensive game really. Plays on a bad team and has to carry every night. Perfect SG for KU to potentially target.
-
AJ Green of Northern Iowa is another. Had season ending hip surgery so that’s a concern but in 3 games averaged 22 this season. Last year averaged almost 20 a game. Been a fan of his game. Former Top 100 kid too
-
We may see some mid-major coaches get bigger jobs as their is usually a few. The Southern Conference has been pumping guys to bigger leagues lately. UNC Greensboro & Wofford’s coaches are names to watch. UNC G has that Miller kid that played well against KU last season. Shooting terrible from 3 but man can that kid get buckets at the PG spot.
I just think about what Lon Kruger did getting Harkless and Gibson from much smaller schools. Gibson is super quick and can shoot the 3 as good as anyone in the league. Harkless seems like a pit nosed guard that can defend and score in the lane and hit the open 3. I’m sure there’s some dudes playing at no name schools that KU really shouldn’t overlook. Those guys might have chips on their shoulders…
-
It does seem like it may be a free year of eligibility for guys, and automatically waived sitting out transferring for a year?
I can’t imagine how much poaching will happen here. At the same time, we really, really should take advantage if I’m reading this right.
-
Yepp free year for all. And next fall kids have a 1 time free transfer. Going to be craziness

That is something that we are undoubtedly sending out feelers for. Hope that KU is able to snag a salty PG with a couple years of eligibility left.

Let poaching season commence
-
Didn’t realize he was a 2022. Things must be REALLY bad in East Lansing
-
@Kcmatt7 Prohm is going to step down, let’s poach their PG.
-
@BShark id take bolton in a heartbeat

is this a sure thing ? - Did you read/hear this somewhere buddy ? Hell I don’t even know who their PG is lol
-
Oh maybe you’re talking about Hunter… Yea I’d have to look but he’s a top 50 kid so maybe.
-
I’m shocked Hunter committed to ISU looking at him now. Dude had offers from Texas Tech, Miami, Louisville, Minnesota, and Florida (others as well but those were the top offers).
Also he is an ATHLETE. My goodness that guy can get up. Seems like an ideal Bill Self pg from a stature/athleticism standpoint. We know shooting doesn’t really factor in to Bill Self PG recruits.

Yeah this is who I meant.
@jayballer67 It’s shadow talk right now but I trust where I’m hearing it from.
-
Is Hunter an incoming ISU recruit?
-
Yeah, he’s a very good guard.
-
Mentioned Hunter a few weeks ago. I know ISU has had great guard play over the years but seriously this kid would elevate KU for next year…
-
I say, if Stevie steps down, we poach…

let me ask you this , in all reality do you think this kid would ever change his mind and de-commit if ISU Coach stepped down or got fired ? - -What % would you think there would be that possibility , was we ever a consideration for this kid ?

I think a high probability with a coach change but he’s right on that line of being the type of recruit KU can’t get if he doesn’t love the school right now. Self just spoke about our recruiting suffering. I’m not holding my breathe on any top 50 kid
-
@BeddieKU23 If you knew with 100% certainty we were going to get a post-season ban, would you just take it this year and get it over with so we can hit the trail hard again?
-
Tough question. I just can’t imagine a March without KU in it so I’m going to go with no until its reality. While it sucks to see recruiting suffering, its also kind of fun to see how good Self is at adapting to the situation. I don’t ever want to go back to recruiting Cliff Alexander, Billy Preston, Diallo, De Sousa. We played with fire and hope this is a hard lesson that never gets repeated
-
@Kcmatt7 what do you think we’ll receive punishment wise?
@BeddieKU23 If such a thing were offered and it would suck to not be in the tourney, I think I’d just get it over with and be banned this season rather than putting it off until next.
Call me dillusional, but I think we’ll be damn good and deep next year.
-
@Marco I think we get absolutely hammered
-
I get what both you and @Kcmatt7 are saying. I want this to be over and given this covid year sacrificing this year seems like the best of a bad situation. The last thing we want to see is a stacked team get told they can’t dance when none of these kids will be directly involved.
-
@BeddieKU23 yea I’m worried this is a top 3 team next year and we get screwed out of a shot at a natty twice in three years
-
Would be fitting
-
Indiana fired Archie Miller.
Come on down Trace Jackson-Davis to KU. Just kidding I know he’s going league but wow.
Probably means 5 star dud Khristian Lander headed somewhere else
-
@BeddieKU23 Can’t say he didn’t deserve it. The guy was handed several NBA prospects and so it was not a lack of talent.
-
Definitely. I wonder who the next hopeless soul will be to try and right the ship
-
@BeddieKU23 It’s a great job for someone who can actually get the program going. I’m sure they’ll get a hot name.
I’d be trying to poach Underwood from Illinois if it were me… He’s 57 so you could theoretically get 8+ years out of him.
-
Yeah I’m sure they will aim high. They need a splash hire, or the right up and coming coach
-
BC hired Charlestons’ Earl Grant.
Depaul to fire their coach. Good recruiting class about to blow up
Minnesota fires the other Pitino
-
Penn St hires Purdue assistant Micah Shrewsberry. Helped develop Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown…
-

Lots of talent is going to become available.
-
If IU is smart they hire Rick Pitino. Dude could take a ham sandwich to an 8 seed
-
That Ham Sandwich may also allegedly stop into a strip club
-
@BeddieKU23 lol, get some chips
-
If I’m Indiana’s AD, my first call is to Porter Moser.
-
@BeddieKU23 oh well! In Slick Rick’s case, he’ll only be there for 15 seconds
