Zach Clemence

  • I don’t follow as closely as a lot of you but I am reading Zach chose KU. Surprised no one has mentioned it as far as I can see. Looks like a good player to have.

  • @wissox

Was in the 2021 recruiting thread but thanks for giving Zach his own he deserved it.

Definitely a talented high 4 star caliber player with a really smooth 3 point shot at 6’9/6’10.

  • He’s a great start to the class. We are going to need another big because it’s looking like this will be Dave’s last year and we don’t want to have to rely on Gethro for any minutes.

  • @BShark

Really you think he’s a 3 year player? Based on anything?

If that occurs we’ll need multiple bigs, in addition to Zach

  • @BeddieKU23 just one more I think, but it needs to be a guy that can play the 5. I would rather have Dave back though.

  • Interesting to see Bill adjust to modern bigs recruiting. He’s been going after guys who can shoot lately, and finally got one.

  • Considering the season that we just had, along with the team that we have coming back and those coming in - man, I hope we have college basketball this year! - coupled with getting Clemence, I am so over Matt Hurt not being a Jayhawk that it isn’t even funny! Is it just me or is this guy a bigtime baller? What were his stats this past season?

  • @Marco You won’t find his stats outside of tournaments or AAU because Sunrise doesn’t put them out there. You’d have to be at the games and track everything. We do know he shot 46% from three on a solid volume last season.

  • I will also just say be glad Kyle Lindsted is no longer at Sunrise. Rat poison.

  • @BShark More like Gopher poison. It’s actually interesting, while I was at KU, I became aware of his (Kyle Lindstead) father, who was a preacher in the evangelical group I grew up in. While I never met him, he was quite influential and still is. I looked him up and he’s the executive director of that school.

It appears to be an interesting story that out of these very evangelical roots they decided to build a basketball powerhouse using kids, I assume, from all over. There must be a residential aspect to their school.

As a Badger nut, he sounds like he fits the mold of former UW bigs who can shoot it. It’s a great weapon obviously, and I look forward to seeing how he performs with the Jayhawks.

I should clarify. Kyle is not a bad person, KU just wasn’t going to land Sunrise kids while he was there.

I am excited for Zach as well. As @Kcmatt7 mentioned Bill has been going after big men that can shoot recently, but he missed on JRE and Hurt. I’m going to be honest either way like when I say I don’t think Gethro ever does anything at KU. In contrast I am absolutely thrilled with everything I’ve heard about Zach. Time will tell on both.

  • If we get Sallis and Brown too and another big I could definitely live with that. Is a just me or have we backed off from Bates a bit?

  • @Marco

They are recruiting Bates hard still according to himself. He had a virtual visit with KU recently.

“The message to me was [that] I have a lot of other good schools that want me, and they understand that, but when it’s a big-time basketball program, they just talked about the history,” Bates said. “And it’s right in my backyard. Why not take that?"

Perhaps even more notably, Bates said he was told the Jayhawks would be ready to take him whenever he commits.

  • Where is Bates from?

I think he would be another nice piece to go with Zach & then if we can get Kendall I would be ok with that 3 new additions. - Not really sure how many Scholi’s we are going to have right ?

  • @wissox 4a school in Kansas, piper

  • @jayballer73 Anywhere between 3 and 8. 3 for sure with Garrett, Lightfoot, and DeSousa graduating. McCormack, Agbaji, and Thompson are the early departure candidates, personally I don’t see any of them leaving after next season. Then Muscadin and Jossell are potential transfer options. Jossell being the more likely candidate if he doesn’t show signs of developing into a role player down the road. Muscadin needs time in the weight room more than anything right now. He’ll probably never be a star, but a solid rotation player in the future.

  • @Crimsonorblue22 Thanks! Is piper the name of the school, or is it where Chris Piper went?

  • @wissox Piper High School. He transfered to IMG Academy for his Senior season though.

  • @Woodrow Thanks.

  • @jayballer73

Bates made it sound as the staff is potentially recruiting for 6 spots. Depending on the seasons of McCormack, Agbaji & Grant-Foster…

  • @wissox lol

  • @Crimsonorblue22 Wasn’t trying to joke actually, never heard of Piper HS.

  • @wissox I know!

Always possible transfers too. 6 seems like a solid number with 3 seniors.

My high school used to play Piper in sports but I’m not sure how with how everything gets shuffled around. I being this up because I know the level of competition is quite bad. I think him going to img is a good thing.

I like Muscadin. Think he is going to be a diamond in the rough.

  • @jayballer73 where are you?

  • @BeddieKU23 just went and read the whole article. Bates is probably a top target based on that.

  • Kittens are going after him hard. Buddy of mine with solid connections in their AD said he’s “KU’s if they really want him.”

Did you go to HS in the Kaw Valley League??

  • @Woodrow I believe my hs was in it but is not anymore. Because we played almost all those schools and Tongie was usually a big game too. I’ll message you.

Mercy I sure would hope it wouldn’t be 8 - - out of those three possible leaving early I think probably of any of the 3 would be Agbaji. I just don’t think Dave is going & I suppose Possibility of Thompson but looking for2 out of him probably – ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

I guess could be pretty big turnover then possibly. Lots of new faces

Things have a way of working themselves out. I don’t see it for Dave but GF is definitely on the radar of NBA scouts and of course Agbaji is well known. I don’t think KU will lose all of their upperclassmen on the roster but crazier things have happened. I think the staff will work hard to keep one of Dave/Ochai as a Sr.

Those that stick around always have good seasons and elevate their stock. We’ll see what happens, weird times

I think its smart to keep a player like him as a top target in case someone like Sallis doesn’t end up being someone they can really get. In a perfect world Self lands both along with Brown and calls it a day. There’s room for all 3 if Ochai/Tyon end up in the pro’s after next year

  • @jayballer73 okay, just checking. It had been awhile since you last posted.

ya just haven’t got any thing lol - - long days, wondering about the football season and running Nails through my foot lol

  • @jayballer73 I think we’ll have sports soon.

  • Ranked #29 in Rivals recent update. Yay for Zach

He’ll probably be a McDonald’s All-American. I am so glad that he committed. Hope we can snag another Sunrise guy. Hell, I hope we can put a net around Sunrise every year.

  • I am really looking forward to seeing this guy suit up as a Jayhawk.

  • Is there a highlight video where he actually dunks other than in warmups? (Seriously, I can’t find one.) Seems to be a good shot blocker, but at 6-10 (ish) seems to have a shorter vertical jump and less aggression than Dedric Lawson or Ostertag.

  • @DanR oh gosh!

  • “DanR” that seems a little harsh. He’s a pure shooter at his size and if you watch his videos he has nice skill moves. Modern game is all about stretch big guys and he seems like one of the best in his class at that. I’m tired of watching videos of kids only dunking and then you see one clip of their shot and you see a huge red flag!
