I sure hope Bill isn’t just blowing smoke about Mitch in this article.
what’s the short version?
-
@BeddieKU23 I’ll just c/p it
“He’s had a great year. Great year,” Self says. “I think he’s learning how to score. I really do. That’s the thing I would say that he’s probably done the best so far is he’s just kind of figured out how to score — inside and outside.”
Lightfoot has always had the ability to shoot 3s; he just hasn’t shown it off much in games. (He’s 10-of-30 for his career.) It was a priority to work on Lightfoot’s confidence, and playing on the scout team as the man could change his approach. Lightfoot has simply been a dirty work guy, hardly ever looking to score. He told The Athletic he believes he’ll be better at stretching the floor next season. “I’ve got something planned for y’all,” he says.
Lightfoot’s presence also allows Self to play bigger lineups and not have it feel forced. The combination of McCormack and Azubuike never really worked because it’s hard to play two centers together, but Lightfoot is more a traditional power forward who has the foot speed and comfort level to defend on the perimeter.
That said, Self still anticipates playing small a majority of the time, because the Jayhawks are extremely deep on the perimeter and at the wing spots. In addition to Garrett, who has filled that small-ball 4 spot the last two years, the Jayhawks have six wings who are 6-5 or taller.
“If the roster returns as expected, I think we’ll have more depth on the perimeter than we’ve had in a long time,” Self says. “We’ll definitely be playing more people than this year.”

Harris, who redshirted this year, could be considered part of this incoming class and a major addition. He has drawn rave reviews from the staff. That should come with the caveat that it’s not unusual for a coach to fall in love with a guy when he’s redshirting because there’s no pressure and you can play freely on the scout team, but nonetheless, Harris is the type of player Self loves. He is a true point guard and the consensus was he was the best passer on the roster this year. “He’s going to score me a lot of points,” Lightfoot says. “He’s one of the best facilitators I’ve played with, and I’ve played with some pretty damn good players. He’s gonna be a force to be reckoned with.”
-
Thanks. Good stuff. A confident Mitch on offense could have some value!
Not surprised on Harris. I really like what he brings to this team potentially
-
Odd there was no mention of Wilson. I don’t think he’s leaving and he said he was back, just what are we going to get from him?
-
Here is some fuel for the guys to work their butts off in the off-season.
Nonsense. KU 13?

Near the bottom of the rotation is my guess.

Not in the rotation is my guess. I wouldn’t be surprised to see some DNP’s next to his name next season.

@Texas-Hawk-10 10th or 11th usually leads to dnps for sure. I think it hurts his chances that he is basically exclusively a 4 due to his lack of athleticism.

It also hurts his chances because he can’t shoot yet. A poor man’s Perry Ellis is probably the best comparison I’ve always seen to Wilson’s game.

I’ve seen varying positions. Anywhere from 8th to here 13th - I think we will be top 10.

I’m not worried about rankings right now because they’re pretty fluid at this time. We still need to see what goes on with the NBA and the timing of all that stuff such as the combine and whose decisions it affects.
-
I agree. And I’ll never understand these rankings. To me, we are often overrated in these early polls. This time I think underrated.
It’s all just spin.
-
@drgnslayr This way we get to play spoiler in the early game against (MSU/Duke/Kentucky?) during that “tournament”.
-
Prediction: Spring yes, winter no. https://twitter.com/goodmanhoops/status/1242876366263025664?s=21

I really think Enaruna makes a big jump next season. People will ask where did that guy come from.

Couple things that stick out: Tyon is Bill’s new man crush. Expect him to get a lot of PT even if he doesn’t start just because he can handle and guard. McCormack had the second highest USG on last years team(!) and was only 9/23 on midrange jumpers. Pls no more Dave. We’ll play 4 out most of the time, with ideally 3 shooters on the floor at the same time. Harris is going to push for minutes because he’ll make a lot of the right plays and avoid mistakes. Even moreso if he improved his shot last year.
C.J. lists Jossell at 6’, and he’s very much not 6’ tall.
-
@FarmerJayhawk so what’s your lineup and subs look like, based on that article?

Starters: Garrett, Bryce, Braun, Ochai, McCormack
Subs: TGF, Harris, Lightfoot, Enaruna
Deep bench: Silvio, Wilson
Redshirts: Jossell, Gethro
-
@Crimsonorblue22 who’s subbing for dave, Mitch?

Mitch and Silvio to some degree. If we can get 25ish MPG from McCormack, 10-15 for Mitch at the 4 and 5, Silvio can clean up the rest at 5-10 MPG.

@BShark explain to me️ I know you think he stinks.

The stonks meme originated as a reaction image to bad financial advice. I’m basically just saying that the hype is out of control with Mitch and I would not buy theoretical Mitch stock right now.
-
@BShark so basically what I thought?
-
I don’t think he is bad, just blown out of proportion by the hype machine and portions of the fan base give his actual last on court production. He is a good bench player. I just don’t think he is a starter first team all league etc…

Give me your next season starting 5, and first five off the bench.

Who has hyped Mitch as first team all Big 12? I’m probably his biggest fan here and will say I do think he starts at the 4 spot this year. I’ve also said multiple times what I think his stats would be and they definitely aren’t all B12 caliber. I think 20-25 mpg with 5-7 PPG, 4-5 RPG, 1-2 APG, 1-2 BPG is what Mitch will do.
I know what Self has said about next year’s roster and I don’t think the playable depth is going to be there next season to run a 4 guard line up most of the time. I think there is more playable depth in the front court next season which will dictate Self running line ups with a stretch 4 most of the time next year.
-
@BShark I’m not sure anyone thinks that highly off him, maybe his mom. I’m anxious to see his improvement.

not so sure, I think I would have to challenge you on being Mitch’s biggest fan. I’ve always really like Mitch, tough as nails and the thing is because he loves the School so much he will do pretty much what ever asked of him.
He is not afraid todo dirty work, take that charge sacrifice his body blocks shots scores here and there, hustles his butt off. May not be huge scorer, and his defense may not be the best but the kid recovers. I have seen him get beat many times on the defensive but has for the most part been able to recover and even block the shot. Just love his attitude - - his approach for sure team 1st with Mitch
-
@BShark I agree that he is a little over hyped. People act like he’s a great defender, which to this point in his career just isn’t true. He does do a good job of coming from the weak side to get a block from time to time. Mitch is great kid, I’ve met him and I’m glad he’s here. His minutes probably have as much to do with Silvio’s play as anyone else’s.
-
Well said! All we can do is wait to see him play again. We don’t know what his game is like now, but what we do know is he’s a glue guy and is totally on board for Self ball. What if he comes back and is shooting 38% from trey and very effective at mid range? We know he can guard the trey line. Self is bound to reward him for red shirting. I expect him to compete for as many non-guard minutes as anyone!
