Better from behind?

  • I hate to say this, but will Baylor’s stranglehold on 1st in the conference actually help us in the long run? Are we conditioning ourselves to take every game seriously?

  • @HighEliteMajor I’m sure you have a strong opinion on this.

  • I think you’re probably right. Maybe playing from behind is allowing us to loosen up a little on 3 pointers. Our offense looks much improved the last few games.

  • It might help a bit but I think the biggest thing is that the league BLOWS absolute butt after the first 4 teams. And teams 3-4 aren’t super good either. It would be really ironic if OU finished ahead of WVU in the final standings. WVU just can not shoot which is a detriment to be sure.

I actually figured it would cause Self to tighten up a bit on the 3, no? At least unless it was completely out of reach?

  • phrasing?

  • Can’t believe this thread title made it past the censors.

  • @chriz it will be interesting to see the line on this game, I’m sure Baylor will be favored as they should be being ranked #1 and on the roll that they are on. It will be interesting to see who has more pressure as well, Scott Drew has never won a conference title at Baylor with some good teams and KU doesn’t have the streak to worry about. I agree with @BShark tho KU and Baylor look light years above the rest of the conference consistently. There have been a game or two Tech and WV have played great but it would be a big upset in my mind if Baylor or KU loses to anyone but each other the rest of this season including the conference tournament. That being said I do think OU can beat Baylor tomorrow, I just wouldn’t bet on it at this point.

  • @approxinfinity we played Oklahoma and ISU. I don’t care what any site says about them they are uninterested in and suck at defense. Good to see we are capable though.

  • @HawkChamp Pooooooffff

  • @kjayhawks It’s never too late for Scott Drew to pull a Scott Drew, but this year feels different to me. I mean, it’s late February and he’s only lost one game. That’s pretty damn good. I have a feeling we will win on Saturday and we will see this team be the road warriors that they are.

  • Gotta rebound! My key. Keep them off the boards

  • @HawkChamp It would be tough to trust Drew for obvious reasons but the law of averages has to kick in for him eventually. I still think a weak conference has helped them. I also don’t think their non conference was all that great outside of Nova and Arizona. Washington (12-14) was only the second game of the year for them but a bad bad loss.

  • @kjayhawks I see your point but while it could happen as it has so many times in the past, we are really deep into the season. Hard to envision Baylor having a meltdown though I would not complain at all if it happened this week 🙂

  • @HawkChamp I’ll be plenty happy with 2 Baylor losses this week lol

  • It will be interesting to see if Self starts Moss or Braun. I think Moss will continue to start going forward because he had more experience and seems better on the defensive end. But we need a Braun to aggressive like he was tonight from here on out.

I’ve noticed Moss starting to go the rim more often too. Maybe he’s feeling the heat from Braun? I assume Self is asking the same from both of them?

I like the current rotation of starting Braun to open the game and starting Moss in the second half.

  • @chriz To me, Moss and Braun are a coin flip right now. Kinda nice to have that friendly competition. Both are good, neither great, but have the potential to be great in any game. They are substitutable, and that’s not bad. Let their recent play determine who starts, and their play the first half determine who starts the second half.

  • @tundrahok I agree, moss was off tonight but Braun kicked some rear! Be nice to have them both on, not sure we’ve seen that! Need everything we can get sat.

  • Four days to prepare for the game of the year.

It will be a very interesting game to say the least. Baylor absolutely manhandled us at home. So much at stake.

For us, a chance to share the Big12 title and virtually lock up a #1 seed.

Baylor has a chance to be the first outright Big12 champ not named Kansas since OSU 03-04, and become the prohibitive favorite to win it all this year.

  • I see the upcoming Baylor game as being a battle like the Dayton game, but without a big chunk of the points.

Going in to this season most of us saw the chip Kansas was carrying, including Self. It has been our “silent partner” throughout the season, perhaps not as big a factor as many of us thought. I think Doke has carried the chip probably more than anyone on the team. I’m mentioning chip because we should get a “chip bump” when facing #1 Baylor. We shouldn’t be favored and all the recent hype putting us above Baylor in March is such BS. Until we prove we are better than Baylor (in many areas) we should remain the underdog. Even a win at Baylor won’t prove anything because it has always been easier for us to win at Baylor than Baylor to win in AFH. Baylor owned us in AFH. Baylor has more solid scoring, especially at the trey. Baylor is a lot more effective at spreading the floor. It will be a monumental win for us to win at Baylor, though it still won’t prove we are the better team unless maybe if we completely steam roll them and send a message of complete superiority. I just don’t see that happening because Baylor is my example of what x-axis basketball should look like.

Own the horizontal space in the game and own the game!

  • @BShark

OU/Iowa St are not good defensive teams.

We are seeing the benefits of practicing and playing 4 guards for the past month.

I’m hopeful when we see some teams in the tournament that cannot defend KU like Baylor/Tech/WVU that this offense will look really good, especially Doke & Dotson that simply are matchup nightmares for teams to scout in short time.

We’ll see if Jared Butler is just one of those guys that “plays up” against KU. He was singe handily most of why they won in Allen

  • @HawkChamp I thought he was talking about Drew…

  • Playing from behind didn’t help last year. Losing to Baylor at home like that was a wake up call, but I just think this is a good squad with a lot more heart, hustle, and drive.

long scoring droughts. - we have some really BAD teams in the league this year

  • @drgnslayr said in Better from behind?:

though it still won’t prove we are the better team

However it would prove we were the better team that day… and that would totally work for me!

  • Anyone know how many Big 12 teams were in the top 25 before conference play?

  • @chriz Week nine ratings - #3 KU, #6 BU, #16 WVU, #22 Tech

  • Who else remembers the big gorilla that the OU students used a couple of years ago to distract our FT shooters? It was at least 6 ft tall and the head spun in a circle. It was the same year that Arizona State’s cheerleaders used the shower curtain on the baseline. I never heard one thing about those distractions, but they’ve gone away, so I guess the NCAA put an end to them. I never saw any similar distractions used against any other team than KU.

I guess it’s a combination of us being better and most of the rest of the league being worse. Looks like we only have 3 in the top 25 now since Tech has been bounced. Just wondering if it’s in part of the league beating up on itself too.

  • Well, my wife does agree about better from behind… that way we can both watch the game …

When you come from behind it makes winning so much better.
