  • This will be my first Kansas Game! Was hoping for Allen Fieldhouse but I’m also seeing the Chiefs play on Sunday so its just the way the schedule plays out. I’ll be back to see a game in Allen next. So pumped

your not meaning this is your 1st time EVER to see a KU game live are you? - -if it is - -really surprised me , just because of the few messages we responded to each other just got the feel that you had probably been to multiple games. - always very knowledgeable - so if it is then I know you will really enjoy - -hope you have a great time.

Then when you get to the Phog - - you’ll never experience anything like it. Awesome

There were games when my Brother and I went - - one example was a KU/UK game and we were right there next to one another and you could forget it - - trying to say something to the other - - - it was impossible to hear what he said or I said - -just un-believable loud - - the TRUE MECCA of College Basketball - - - ENJOY my friend - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Yes its my first ever game live. I live in the northeast so the closest they have ever came has been about 3 hours away. I have dreamed of seeing them in Allen Fieldhouse since I was 9 years old. I was all set to see them a few years back but then me and wife had our first child so that scrapped that. Then I was set to see them in the Champions Classic last year but something came up again.

So Saturday we are making the trip to KC. One of our good friends is a Chiefs fan and he was already going so he asked us knowing I was a diehard Jayhawk Fan if we would like to go. We had hoped there would be a KU game in Allen but such as fate its in the Sprint Center so I’ll have to make another return trip in the near future. Hopefully by that time my son will be old enough to really understand what’s going on and it will be something memorable. Regardless I’m on cloud 9 to see them in person.

And as a bonus will be seeing that Pat Mahomes guy (not a Chiefs fan but I’m excited to see him). Have read a few times he’s pretty decent.

  • @BeddieKU23 You absolutely must make it back to Larryville for a game!!! That being said you’ll have an absolute blast watching the Jayhawks! The Sprint Center has a nice court view from most seats. The one time I went we sat in the back row and it had a good time. (Back row isn’t all bad you come in from the top so we were right by the exit with no stairs.) Enjoy my Jayhawk friend!!!

I will make it back for another game you can count on it. I didn’t want to see the Hawks anywhere else growing up but since this is a dual sports trip I’ll have to settle for the Sprint Center this time. We got decent seats although I thought the price was ridiculous for the opponent compared to what I was expecting to pay to see them in Allen. Minor gripe there. Anything I should be on the lookout for around the Arena, etc food, bars?

  • @BeddieKU23 Get in where you fit in. There’s plenty of options right by the arena. It’s hard to go wrong.

  • @BeddieKU23 Come by Columbia, SC, and pick us up on your way to your first game in AFH when you finally get the chance. I have been promising to take my wife there, and I haven’t been there since 1980. ROAD TRIP!

lol , ya the Chiefs are not my # 1 team either but I do pull for them anytime they are not Playing Green Bay. & Mahomes as you know is an absolute stud love watching him.

Wish I was going to the game - -have been a few times and the KU experience is insane - -when it comes time to you actually be able to be in the Phog - - - a life time experience.

I’m one of the few that not wealthy income - -pretty meager so I have to work to just be able to go money wise but that’s ok - -makes it more memorable when I do get to go - living off my disability income from my back - -only one other problem that get s in the way – Bills but I still love them to death. - I know you’ll have a good time this weekend. - I hope the boys play well for you so you can really enjoy. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Show my age - - I remember going to the old Big 8 tournament in Muninicipal Fieldhouse - -and then my Brother and I went to the tournament when it was in the stockyards lol and would hang out at the Golden OX. - - had some good times.

When I was in jr high and seeing Dave Robisch and trying to et his and other autographs - -time of my life

Q39 – still in KC, but close to the state line by the KU MedCenter, just a short drive away from downtown. You will thank me. I avoid downtown KC like the plague.

  • Joes Barbecue is the one place I always frequent.

  • @mayjay

I’ll be in your neck of the woods in the spring but that’s after the season ends. I’m hopeful we will make a return trip next yr to see them in Allen and finally fulfill a life long dream

  • @jayballer73

Yeah since KU never comes within 3 hours of me this trip required me to save every penny for a while but I know it will be worth it. I’m jealous you have had the chance to see them before in person.

  • @dylans @HighEliteMajor

Thanks in KC 4 days so I’ll have some time to rummage around

  • @BeddieKU23 snow coming sunday

  • @BeddieKU23 Where did you go to school?

    Hoping it isn’t too terrible.

  • @BShark You guys are cute.

  • @BeddieKU23 Having lived in downtown KCMO for over a decade I have lots of recommendations…too many! If you like barbecue, Jack Stack, Slap’s (just over KS state line) and Joe’s KC are at the top of my list.

Anton’s, LuLu’s, West Side Local, The Rieger, Blue Bird Bistro, Room 39 are a few restaurants I recommend.

Loads of breweries if you’re into that. Boulevard, the KC anchor, is worth a visit. Torn Label, City Barrel, Casual Animal are a few more favs…and there are more.

Feel free to shoot me a note if you’re looking for something in particular. Coffeeshops, distilleries, specific cuisine, there’s a lot.

In the NorthEast, specifically Vermont. I got into KU and wanted to attend there but my parents weren’t supportive of that so I ended up instate at UVM. I always wonder how different life would be if I had attended KU. grew up dreaming of being one of those kids in the student section of Allen

Already got 3 feet in one day last week. A little snow won’t bother us LOL

  • @ajvan

Thank you so much for the recommendations. I did some research of my own and a lot of those places caught the eye as well for food. I definitely plan to hit up City Barrel and BKS and probably Torn Label. I come from a state spoiled in great Breweries so I’m always interested to see what people are doing in other parts.

If I have any questions I will let you know. Thanks

  • I’m late, but here is your kcmatt guide to downtown (I live about a 10 minute walk from the Sprint Center).

I’ll start with you first question, food near the arena:

    • Parlor is awesome. It is sort of like a food court. But with phenomenal food and a bar. It’s over by the Breweries and Distilleries.
    • There is a newer restaurant owned by KC Joe’s in Power and Light and it is solid. County Road Ice House is the name. It’s like a bar food/BBQ hybrid.
    • The Peanut is within a 15 minute walk. Maybe 20. But it’s an experience. Just know the service is terrible and that’s just kind of part of it lol. Come early and ready to drink a few beers before you get your food. It’s a wings place.
    • The Quaff is also pretty close. It’s a divey sports bar with decent food and cheaper beer.
    • Milwaukee Deli is good food. And then John’s Big Deck is right there and it sells cheap beer so you can pregame. John’s Food isn’t terrible, but it wouldn’t be my first choice.

    Other Bars for other nights:

    • Green Lady Lounge (live Jazz every night). The Phoenix does too I believe, but it’s a completely different atmosphere. I prefer Green Lady.
    • There are like 5 (or more) breweries on 18th street. (I enjoy going to all of them except Double Shift.) My favorite though is Strange Line and it is in the River Market.
    • If you’re in need of a Dive Bar, there is the Quaff, Blue Line and then Kelly’s if you need to kill a night. (Kelly’s usually has a cover band on nights during the weekend and a small entry fee). John’s Big Deck is also a lot of fun.
    • Next to the Quaff there is a little Speakeasy called Hush, and then an arcade on the top of the building that is a really good time (and reasonably priced to get a bay).
    • Up-Down is a lot of fun but gets crowded on weekends.
    • Extra Virgin has very good happy hour deals.

Other food that’s a little different:

    • Beer Kitchen is my favorite brunch. I just really, really like their burgers.
    • Mission Taco or KC Taco Company are good quick bites.
    • Blvd Tavern is a good brunch with Bottomless Mimosas and Bloody’s I think.
    • La Bodega is a Tapas restaurant and can be a lot of fun.
    • Chez Elle is a crepes place. I know it sounds weak, but you will leave full. It’s very, very good.
    • Baramee Thai Bistro is my go too for Thai.

If you need more suggestions feel free to shoot me a DM.

  • @wrwlumpy Outstanding!!! Thanks lumpy.

  • @Kcmatt7 I think you should just escort them around!

  • All these posts are making me envious. We have about 10 Waffle Houses, a few Bojangles, and an IHop in easy reach…

  • Just don’t skip the bbq is my recommendation, it’s iconic for a reason.

Skip Jack Stack. My opinion… But yea definitely do Q39 or Joes. Gates has a couple near Downtown too. Gates is so hit or miss though and I abhor the way you order. But it’s definitely an authentic KC experience lol.

If I wasn’t saving for my wedding I’d be able to do and then suggest more! But sort of poor at the moment…

  • @Kcmatt7 engagement!
