  • No doubt. Major game from Mr. Garrett. Big time. Just a terrific effort all the way around.

  • @BShark Most definetly buddy, this guy works his ass off playing his usual great defense and starting to add some scoring - -really doesnā€™t force anything - -quick drives to the basket I know ya ya but he has always been kind of a favorite to me - -means so much to the team - -great Job Marcus - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Your right for sure buddy. - - Always works his ass off on the defensive end , really , really solid - -now starting to add some more on the offensive end. - -actuall he has a pretty quick step drivng the ball really like this kid

  • I really hope we can end the Marcus bashing. Not necessarily people on this board but he gets more flack than anyone on this team and he is nothing but solid.

  • Fighting foul trouble too. Some of the drives he had with contact where big time and his ft shooting is improved. Glad he is showing his worth in big games

  • @Woodrow Until he hits 33% of his threes and isnā€™t so bad from three that he turns down open looks, that lightning rod will always be there. The reality is that he looks much better when weā€™re 4/1 instead of 3/2. If we have an additional shooter on the floor from outside, it seems that his weakness there is less of a big deal. 3/2 itā€™s a big deal. At least that how it looks to me. Or heck, when Dotson and Doke combine for 60 and Garrett gets to the rack.

  • Easily his best floor game, well done. I remember last year sticking up for him when everyone else was on him. We need a lock down defender.

  • 5-6 FT, i didnā€™t get a count on his 3ā€™s I know he made 1 that looked pure. Does anyone have his season ft% quickly at hand? Early yet of course but it sure looks like a much better motion

he is 14-22 ft shooting % now - -think itā€™s like 63.6 % on the year

  • Absolutely. Great thread, love MG. His defense, moves his feet so well. Always so poised. And had such an amazing, clutch (reverse?) layup in the final minute of overtime.

Would love to see what this guy could do at the next level. Still needs to work on his shot, but he plays with wisdom beyond his years.

The 4/1 or 3/2 isnā€™t the issue with Garrettā€™s offense specifically. Itā€™s that in KUā€™s two big offense, neither big can play more than 10ā€™ from the basket. Garrettā€™s biggest strength on offense is his ability to beat his man off the dribble and get to the rim. He canā€™t do that in this version of the 3/2 because the second big canā€™t play on the perimeter and it clogs the lane and takes away his, and Dotsonā€™s biggest offensive strengths of driving to the rim. If Self had a second big that could play on the perimeter, Garrett would be just fine in a 3/2 look. Put him with Either and T-Rob, T-Rob and the twins, or Cole and the twins and Garrett would be just fine in a 3/2 offense. Itā€™s just this version of the 3/2 thatā€™s a bad fit for him and pretty much everyone else except for McCormack.

  • Marcus is best when he drives to the rim, but Iā€™m starting to like his outside shot. Now, Iā€™m willing to watch and see what happens with the shot, rather than say ā€œplease, Marcus donā€™t shoot out there.ā€

  • He has the highest basketball IQ on the team. He sets picks, finds the open man, rebounds, initiates plays well, moves the ball well, and BOXES OUT. If he is having a bad shooting night, he is smart enough to find ways to help the team offensively. On defenseā€¦ donā€™t need to say another word here. He will never be a great pure shooter, but that is ok. We need Ochai and Moss to hit their threes - that is more important. And Doke making free throws - was nice to see him hit some key ones last night. Self isnā€™t truly comfortable with Marcus on the benchā€¦ ok heā€™s not truly comfortable anytime, but Self relies on Marcus a lot.

    Garrett played his ass off.

Well youā€™re right. My position on the 3/2 and Garrett is based on our team - ā€œthis versionā€ as you say. Thatā€™s what I was referring to. Not some theoretical 3/2 in la-la land.

The issue is that Garrettā€™s lack of three point shooting can paralyze our offense when we have Doke and Dave in the game.

Of course, if we play a 3/2 and the 4 man is a three point shooter, perhaps like Perry Ellis, or Marcus, or where the 4/5 can really step out (the twins as you mentioned) it wouldnā€™t be as big a deal.

I do think, though, if you put Garrett in with TRob/Withey, taking out Releford, we would face the same struggle. We saw it when TT wasnā€™t shooting well from three.

We have to have three shooting threats on the floor at all times (except specialty situations). Have to.

  • In close games like this, we saw who was the 3rd guy capable of getting his own and that was Marcus. If he can sprinkle in the occasional 3 like he did yesterday with no hesitation and make free throws consistently he is really irreplaceable out there. Yesterday may have been his best game of his career. I dont think he will do that every game but if he does every 2-3 games this team has the highest ceiling in the country.

  • Marcus was spectacular, and no way we win this game without him. Loved that late basket he made by reversing under the goal. It didnā€™t look like there was room.

We are starting to value his experience.

HEM is right concerning always keeping a 3-pt threat on the floor. The difference between a National Champion Kansas team and one that goes home early could easily be a 2% change from trey on Marcusā€™ success rate.

A big help with Marcus is his ability to drive. That canā€™t be over-stressed, and we need drivers almost as bad as we need trey shooting. What we saw in the Dayton game was that we donā€™t need so much space in the paint to score at the rim. Dot is quickly learning how skilled he is at the rim. Marcus is a solid finisher, too. Och is not too far behind these two. Tristanā€¦ coming soon!

Even the best teams from trey go cold. You can pray that you donā€™t go cold in March but itā€™s common for that to happen. The fact that we can drive the ball gives us one more area where we can exploit and adjust to when needed.

Iā€™ll be keeping that Dayton game on my dvr and will probably watch it a dozen times between now and March. Weā€™ve gone years where we didnā€™t have games the entire season to match that one. And Daytonā€¦ wow! Very gifted and Iā€™ll enjoy watching Toppin in the No Boys Allowed league next year! That guy might still grow a couple more inches and wait until he puts on another 20 or 30 lbs of muscle.

  • Just stopping in to wish all my fellow Bucketeers a HAPPY THANKSGIVING. Gobble Gobble. Hope you have family, food and fun.

I am grateful for your support and most importantly, your friendship.

Hard to express what went through my mind watching that game yesterday. Just so proud of the team and think that the time they spent together will bring only good things this season. No disrupters. As @drgnslayr always said, this team has a chip on their shoulder and proved to themselves they could do it. Dayton was simultaneously good and bad. Exceptional shooting but short on respect.

Mr. Shorty Shorts has put in the hard work and it shows. Coach always ā™„ a mind focused on defense and Marcus has heard him. Just an amazing stat sheet for the whole team. This is what we lacked last year.

Anyhoo, all the best to each and everyone here and to @approxinfinity for providing us this platform to be a part of.

  • Happy Gobble Gobble to all of you!

  • @RockChalkinTexas šŸ¦ƒšŸ’™ā¤ļø

  • In my opinion he is the most improved player on the roster this year from last year.

  • @AsadZ

    Starting to look that way

  • @BeddieKU23 Dotson has increased his ppg by 7.5 while increasing efficiency.

  • Doke! Or the guy that looks like himšŸ‘€

  • For Dotson the expectation was high. Its early but he is playing about 3 MPG more this year than last year. His scoring has increased but turnovers have increased as well.

  • @AsadZ He is turning it over slightly more (the Duke game did no favors to anyone) but his turnover % is actually lower because his handling/usage are up a lot.

I think Garrett, Doke and Dotson are all in the conversation as they have all improved a lot. Which is good because Agbaji hasnā€™t really improved at all, Dave looks better at times but is erratic and Moss looks like the same player he was at Iowa.
