Gethro Muscadin commits to KU

  • @BigBad I guess the embiid is the .1% comparison? Or the Diallo?

  • @Crimsonorblue22 I’m saying they always compare white kids to white kids.

  • @BeddieKU23 Good god, finally some good news.

  • VIP article up on the KU 24/7 site about his soccer background.

Biggest things from soccer background imo: conditioning should be quite good as you can’t really play soccer if you quickly get winded and footwork has to be good as well. I don’t think he contributes next year but he does have some potential. I think eventually he would be exactly what you want at the 5 spot running a deadly 4 out offense. Rim runner, can defend and develop a decent shot. Biggest thing is he will need to add strength/muscle so he doesn’t get pushed around.

Another one on the way. 👀

  • Some quotes from Bill.

"At 6-foot-10, this past summer Gethro showed everybody that he can shoot the basketball with range. He’s a runner. He’s a jumper. He’s a shot blocker.”

“Gethro to me is one of those guys, kind of like a Markieff Morris — how good can he get? I mean his ceiling is high. He can run, he can jump. He made two or three 3s the other night in his high school game and he plays in a highly-competitive situation. He’s going to be really good. And he’s active and a shot blocker. He’s not ready yet, but he’s going to be really good.”

I like the sounds of that , I have read that Gethro had quite possibly the highest ceiling of anyone - -has a high ceiling - -also like being a rim protecter – I think going to be a really nice 4 year player for us. – ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • Nice when really tall guys have high ceilings.

  • Actually, reading @HighEliteMajor 's post about Nerf dunk games in the other thread, high ceilings are good for everyone!

  • @BShark

    Love what I’m seeing

  • Have to agree. - - sure looks like he is pretty darn mobile. - Looks like his range is not a fluke - - looks like a pretty smooth J with range. - - Hits the glass well - -looks like got medium game as well.

The only thing I see might need to ad just a few pounds - -nothing major - -love his mobility. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Ditto. Still think he might redshirt (I think you said that)?

  • @Marco

Probably however it depends what happens after the season with Silvio I’d imagine. If Gethro can put on a good base of strength and weight by next fall then maybe that changes things. Probably still looking at a player a few years away from making a big impact but maybe he gets on campus and surprises with his athletic ability and shooting touch…

I do think it depends a lot on Silvio. If Silvio is still here Gethro is the 4th 5 man on the roster.

  • @BShark

I know it was Monmouth but Silvio showed improved 4 man skills. Hit a 3, looked comfortable handling the ball. If he gets comfortable out there maybe he shows more of a 4 game going forward. I do agree though that Gethro likely doesn’t see the court much next season if Silvio is back

Something to follow going forward. I do think there is a great chance Silvio stays.

If the roster ends up being the following…

    1-2: Thompson, Harris, Jossell

    1-4: Garrett, Tyon, Braun

    3-4: Agbaji, Enaruna, Wilson

    4-5: Silvio, Mitch

    5: Dave, Gethro

I think Jossell and Gethro both take a RS. We’d also have two pretty good players not playing much at all. At this time I couldn’t say who that would end up being but Bill isn’t going 11 deep in tight games.

  • @BShark

Boy what a combination of players Self would have to work with. I agree if all are back Gethro and Latrell would likely take shirts. No other choice.

Unfortunately it probably means someone leaves after the year we are not expecting. Agbaji, Silvio are the obvious candidates although they are not unexpected departures to most. Wilson is the next most likely name just due to circumstance. Tough thing to expect everyone stays in today’s environment

  • I thought Wilson was gone or going to have to improve rapidly before his injury. Now I think there is a little more breathing room. But it’s going to be hard to keep everyone committed happy.

Might be easier if Agbaji goes pro but he’s so wildly inconsistent and needs to get a better feel for the game.

  • I know we all like Garrett. But I think Garrett is one of those players that possibly blocks a team from reaching its potential when he plays too many minutes. On a Bill Self run team, Garrett is “pet” like. Meaning he’s easy to love because he’s smart, defense is great, and has high intangibles.

I see next season and my first, favorite lineup is Thompson, Agbagi, Wilson, Enaruna, DeSousa. All in on the 4/1. Dave instead of DeSousa ok too. Rotate that.

Now, the uncertainty with Wilson makes that a bit grey. Bring Garrett off the bench at the 2-4 spots. Play 20 minutes. Garrett played 26 minutes and was a nothing offensively Friday. But I more focus on the Duke game where, once again, the defense didn’t care about him at the three point line. Heck, in that game, he played 36 minutes, shot 38% from two and didn’t even take a three.

The consistent production of the 3/2 concept is severely challenged with Garrett on the floor.

Garrett is the kind of player that, when played too much, really limits a team offensively as it stands now.

I had a Garrett thread. I don’t remember what I called it but this is a large amount of my point. IE on a great KU team Garrett is a nice bench piece.

Last year we really had to play Garrett especially after all the issues. This year we are currently at 9 guys, so he’s going to play.

Even with having to play him last year, KU was markedly worse with him on the floor vs off. People will blames the turnovers against Duke and rightfully so but Garrett was a big part of the loss as well.

Unfortunately Marcus is basically Jamari on steroids.

  • Until our young guards learn to drive better, Garrett’s quickness and ability to drive for a bucket, and his passing to the post, will help keep the other team from playing D all the way out to the 3 pt line, as they cheat back to help. This can open up our 3 pt offense a bit even if he doesn’t shoot any himself, but if he can get better at laying it up both LH and RH (i.e., more unpredictable), it will be more significant.

I think Silvio stays. I think there is a chance you can turn him into a lottery pick by the end of next season so it’s a no brainer.

I also think Dotson is back…

He’s just not mocking anywhere so far and he’s basically been the same player he was last season only a little more assertive on offense. Nothing I’ve seen makes me think he’s developed enough to go to the NBA.

Which means we’re currently full on scholarships. And that next season’s team is stacked. Would be a real shame to get a postseason ban.

I don’t think we can avoid playing Garrett fairly big minutes this year either. Garrett and Dotson are the only two guys that can drive it well.

I really wish our guards, especially Dotson and Agbaji were even 75% as good as Brady Morningstar feeding the post. Lots of missed easy dunks against Monmouth, not that it mattered in that game but it’s something that can down the line. Doke is excellent at sealing down low but it only matters if the guards can get it to him.

  • @Kcmatt7 It means we are one over. There are two SR in Doke and Moss, one open spot and 4 signees. However I can’t see the staff taking Jossell without knowing Dotson is gone.

Ah you’re right, one over. Verbal Commits website is counting Mitch as leaving.

I still think Dotson will end up coming back. I’m sure Dotson leaving has been the plan. But I think it ends up with Bill booting someone to make room for him coming back.

If Ochai isn’t the one who goes pro that is.

At this second I think it is more likely we see Dotson back than Ochai.

But I also wouldn’t be shocked if Wilson were to transfer out.

  • @Kcmatt7 I really just do not see it at all with Dotson but I’d love to be wrong. We’ve seen guys go before just to go, even if it’s to start cashing overseas checks ie Newman. I do think Dotson is closer to Graham than Newman, but time will tell.

    Don’t wanna lose Wilson.
