Tony is a helluva defensive coach.

How’d that game finish? Looks like a great first half ass Whoopin

  • @jayballer73 not saying I want to replace Bill. I mean when Bill leaves.

  • @jayballer73

I would normally send you a private message, but I want the kubuckets community that is reading to see this.

    I AM SORRY. I APOLOGIZE.

It’s no excuse, but I’ve been dealing with some stuff lately and am a little on edge. Taking my bad attitude out on fellow Jayhawk fans (or anyone else) is not appropriate.

You are entitled to your opinion just as much as I am.

Again, please forgive my terrible attitude.

  • I’m with jayballer on this one. Only one team cuts down the nets, but there are potentially 40 games to watch. 40 games of that offense would make me switch to something more exciting to watch like golf or fishing.

Winning is fun, but I hate Bill’s bad ball too. I’d much rather watch him perfect then 4 out or run the high low like the late 2000s. Those teams had defensive chops, but still scored plenty of points. This year may be ugly without a 4 available. 3 good centers on the same team. 🤦♂

Bennet likely isn’t coming if Bill leaves, so there’s little to no threat of that style of ball ruining my fun, but the fbi sure as hell is trying to foul us up.

@nuleafjhawk I’m not sure what @jayballer73 's problem is, but if Self were to leave, I agree with you and would definitely have Bennett number 1 on the list to replace. Without a doubt one of the best half dozen or so coaches in the game right now. Gets his players to commit to playing suffocating defense every possession of every game. Has won consistently without as much top tier talent as teams the Cavaliers face most nights in conference games (although the talent level has picked up the past few years). He’s had 13 players drafted - 3 last year.

And, there is the small matter of being the most recently minted NCAA champion. Even more impressive in some respects is the fact that the Cavaliers have won the ACC regular season title 4 of the past 6 years - in a much, much tougher conference (certainly at the top) year in and year out than the B12.

I don’t give a rats as about aesthetics myself - in fact, I enjoy watching teams struggling to score against them and routinely getting shot clock violations. And, Self likes to win ugly games, as well.

It’s not a matter of choosing Bennett over Self or saying he is a better coach - but rather, who would be on the very short list of candidates to replace him. I have zero doubt that Bennett would be very successful at KU. Whether we could get him if Self left is another matter…

ummm HELLO you read? - - - like he pointed out him self - - we are not talking about who replacing who if who was to leave - - maybe start back at the 1st of this and see where it said anything about replacing lol - - -My problem with people like yourself almost coming the way it comes across is that trying to say Bobby Bennet is better so save the bs HAVE A GREAT NIGHT

  • Our old friend grant Williams is a lil short for the nba. Getting stuffed at the forward position.

You have no reason to apologize - - you’ve done nothing wrong my KU partner. - -But I too will apologize , wasn’t taken personal on my part anyways - -this is just one thing that gets me in trouble - -people start talking about Ku - -my defense shield goes up instantly and a lot of times logic goes out the window - -still have that Debate mentality from High School.

I know you love the Crimson and Blue as much as I do. - this type of thing has gotten me in trouble before. - -I live eat and sleep KU that’s all - -just can’t stand ANYTHING negative being said about players - -Coach’s - -and we both have opinions - no problem with that -your entitled to yours - -e don’t have to agree.

You are perfectly fine my friend - -hope we are friends - -I love KU - you love KU - I wear my KU well - -tatoo’s with KU on my right forearm - - KU on my lower calf - boy I’m here to tell ya - you better be loyal through and through you do that - - doesn’t wash off lol. -again no apology needed -but thanks anyways - -were all good as far as I’m concerned - - ROCK CHALK MY FRIEND.

  • Hey. Appreciate that sportsmanship, you two! Rock Chalk. @nuleafjhawk @jayballer73 Hang in there, nuleaf.

  • @dylans Ahem, I’m a little experienced with this. It started with Tony’s Dad at UW. Bo came in after the 1 year failure of Brad Soderburg and made sure that low scoring, and winning basketball stayed in Madison. While I understand the sentiment of watching a 90-88 game, I really began to appreciate the virtues of an elite defense frustrating opposing offenses, and grinding it out to another 52-47 affair. It might not work in Lawrence, but I think I have to go with others and say I’d welcome Tony to Madison, er, I mean Lawrence!

  • Conference game 1st game of the season, anyone notice that? Cool! I like it!

  • We went from loving 90 points a game with Roy to loving 67 points a game with Bill, so 48 points a game doesn’t seem that bad if the other team scores 34.

Eh… no. Can’t do sub 50. Can we not score at least 70 and still play 40 point defense?

  • Interestingly, for a guy who has made his coaching career a study in low scoring games, look who is atop the career 3 pt percentage list, and by far. Good shot selection was likely his forte, and he no doubt passes that on at UVA. Also a 2-time Academic All-American, FWIW.

(I dunno if someone passed him since this NCAA guide from 2016-17.)

  • The grind it out defensive game has its benefits, but also its risks.

Because it creates low possession games, you are vulnerable to inferior opponents that have shot makers. That’s how Virginia lost to UMBC. It’s not that they were bad in that game. UMBC shot the ball very well, and when you play UVA, if you make shots, you will probably win because their defense is designed to keep you from getting easy shots, but if you shoot well from three (UMBC was 12-24 from three) the defense doesn’t really work. That high of a 3Pt%, plus limiting turnovers (just 12) put UMBC in perfect position to upset UVA because UVA’s style doesn’t translate to just scoring more points if the opposition is hitting shots. They can’t just speed up their pace because that is not how they are built or designed to play.

UVA is locked into that style, even if a team comes out shooting well. You can win a lot of games like that, because defense travels, but you also have the risk that the rug gets pulled from under you at any moment, especially now with so many teams capable of hitting 12-15 threes in a game.

  • Single elimination tournament favors hot shooting over solid d on any given night. On the flip side solid D is more likely to get you thru 6 games. Make it a best of 3 from the elite eight on and KU wins a few more championships. The tournament doesn’t care who the best team is, just the last standing.

  • I’m not sure if Bill is a top defensive coach anymore tbh. Beard and Bennett are definitely better.

  • BShark said:

I’m not sure if Coach really has EVER been an elite defensive Coach - -feel like he is more offensive mind set , could be wrong

I just keep thinking back about how many countless times I have seen wide open - - WIDE OPEN un-contested3’s from the corner - have seen our guards get beatin off the drive - not only our guards but our wings too.

Seen to many times we got beatin on the boards by not doing the fundamentals of the game - -boxing out - -getting beat on the boards when we had no business being beat. - - personally wonder exactly how much emphasis he spends on the defensive end - again could be wrong – ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • Tony is the master of BAD BALL!

His defense sparkles even when taking the air out of the ball. Most teams focusing on defense push some tempo to try to speed up the other teams’ offense. Doesn’t matter for Tony. His guys are individually coached on how to defend and then also on how to defend as a team. No gimmicks necessary, just good ol’ technique!

I would take him all day long if he wanted to come to Kansas.

  • Bennett is a great coach, but his style has a huge flaw that other systems don’t have. His style creates low possession games which creates less margin for error for his teams. This is what led to the UMBC upset. If UVA has an offnight shooting or the other team makes shots which tends to happen in the NCAA tournament, his teams have a history of going home early.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 his run last year did require a lot of good things to happen in a lot of games. But would it be delusion to hope that Kansas could field a team that wouldn’t have to fight hard the whole way to win the tourney?

  • @approxinfinity most runs require several breaks in truth. @Texas-Hawk-10 is right about running into a hot shooting team but we have also ran into having a good offensive team and lost.

  • When you see scores like that, it reminds me of Ben Howland teams. He was also a coveted coach… until he wasn’t. That style got tiresome… it wins games for a while, but I don’t think you can hang your hat on it if you want to be a hall of famer.

  • Wow KSUCK need OT to beat UNLV on the road.

  • In football we aren’t the worse power 5 school this year. Arkansas got beat at home by Western Kentucky 45 to 19. Wow

  • @BShark pretty happy KSU lost their fb game! I been hearing about it. Showed no mercy on me, plus the duke fans too. A duke fan that graduated from KSU. 🤷♀🐏🐑🐄🐖🐀

  • @Crimsonorblue22 most KSU fans have other teams in basketball like WSU or Dook. I hope they lose every game in every sport. Our women’s soccer team will play tomorrow vs TCU for the Big 12 tournament title.

  • @Crimsonorblue22 I’m watching DG and Hornets. He just nailed a 3 at the end of the 3rd to give him 18 so far.

WAIT!! OH------MY GAWD…JUMPIN JEEE HO SO FAT-

BENNETT WON …7 MONTHS AGO ------ SELF WON ----HOLY SMOKE --------------------------12 YEARS AGO.

If you don’t think Bennett is a good coach - you might want to re-think that. You don’t hear me and others saying that we want him to replace Self - just that he’s a damn good coach. Get over yourself. as a famous individual said - -" JUMPIN GEE HOSSA FATS – - -OH – MY GAWD - - do you really think people care how long ago the title was one whether it ws yesterday or the day before yesterday - -it STILL is ONE CHAMPIONSHIP - -SPARKY. lmao

Coach Self has help at minimum place at least 23 players in the NBA - - Coach Self in the time he has been here has like you so quite nicely wanted to point out - - Self has EIGHT - -let me type it again so even you get it - -EIGHT 30 plus win Seasons - - Bennet ummm not so much - - - four, - -I’ve heard people o here saying they would like to see Bennet Coach here - -just fricken insane - -his fricken style of ball is like watching the FRICKIN GRASS GROW - -snooze ball - -you want to watch/support that style of ball in the years of 2,000 here is an idea subscribe to the ACC network and knock yourself out.

Bennett is no Coach Self - -I don’t give a rats ass whether one year ago - or twenty years ago - -A Championship last year is no more valuable then 10 it’s STILL just ONE NCAA Championship - -get over yourself roflmfao. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY - - OH , OH , OH – wait oh ya - -have a great night

That’s what I like about you @jayballer73, your tendency to hold back Lol… It makes Coach Marco want - just for fun! - to bring back the Marcus Garrett discussion.

  • It’s always Brad Stevens with me…but that ain’t happening.

  • I’m totally in on Chris Beard if we needed a replacement. A sleeper? Billy Donovan if he wants to return to college.

  • @HighEliteMajor Beard is amazing so far.

good choices also - - - - for the life of me I can’t think of the coach’s name at this minute - -I hate that - -But think his name is Mack? - -Louisville Coach hats has been there a couple of yrs now - -kinda like him too

  • @jayballer73 Chris Mack

  • No thank you with Mack, 67% win percentage in crap conference with Xavier. I’m plenty Good passing that by, not to mention several of his players that seemed to be actual gangsters and trouble makers. The next coach here won’t touch Bill Self’s regular season success and I’m ok with that as long as we can have more post season success. I’d gladly trade half the conference regular season titles for 2 NCs. Just win at home and win the conference more often than not. Current college coaches I’d like in no order are Jay Wright, Tony Bennett and Chris Beard. If NBA coaches Brad Stevens or Billy Donovan would consider a return I’d be fine with either of them.

  • The problem as I see it is winning less conference titles doesn’t mean you’ll win more national titles. It’s just a sign you’re in the hunt. Roy won half as many conference titles, but that didn’t seem to help him win any national championships at KU. The only way KU wins more is to either recruit overwhelming talent or get the tournament switched from double elimination so the best team has a better chance of winning. Neither of these are likely to happen, so I’ve stopped staking my happiness/ judging the success of the team by national accolades and more on how they perform and improve during the season and the players careers.

  • From my point of view, my only true satisfaction with a KU season is a national title. With our program, that’s how it is with me. We’re a blue blood, and we’re not a “fallen on hard times” blue blood. That doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy the ride (as so many used to pound on me about). I do. But when we lose our last game in the tourney, it sucks, and it is a season unfulfilled. Glad to be spoiled.

As for @kjayhawks trade off – half of our conference titles for two national championships. Yea, that’s an easy trade. Not sure the basketball gods would make that trade with us, though. Conference titles should not be the focus. I, for one, am very glad the streak is over. The streak was a very big distraction. Nice to win, of course, pretty cool, but something that grew bigger is scope – and was a distraction from the real mountain top. The sense of relief of each team reaching that goal, not being the one to break the streak – I think – impacted the tourney mindset. The focus. At least some.

This team can win the NC this season. No doubt. I think I post that every season. Blessed to be a KU fan. It’s great to always be in the hunt.

Mack seems to be doing quite nicely at Louisiville - -and sure seems to be recruiting a hell of a lot better then we are at present

  • @jayballer73 he was like 20-14 last year, his only year at Louisville. No thanks

  • Mack has a top 5 team this year, and a top 10 recruiting class. He is a fine coach, and would be on the short list if Needed.
