Border War Renewed
-
KU basketball has announced a 6 year series with Missouri to renew the Border War for men’s basketball.
The 6 game series begins on Dec. 12, 2020 with a game at the Sprint Center. There will 2 games each in Kansas City, Lawrence, and Columbia.
2020-21 (Kansas City) 2021-22 (Lawrence) 2022-23 (Columbia) 2023-24 (Lawrence) 2024-25 (Columbia) 2025-26 (Kansas City)
-
I’m so pumped. I can’t wait for people to lose their minds. People got pissed about a charity game that raised over $1M lol.
-
LETS EFFIN GO.
-
@Kcmatt7 I’ve wanted this series to come back because there is nothing that compares to beating Missouri in anything. I’m just surprised that Bill Self signed off on it because of his past comments on playing meaningful games against Missouri. I always assumed we’d have to wait until Self left Kansas for there to ever be serious discussions about restarting this rivalry.
-
we have nothing to gain from this. Gross.
But now that it’s happening, time to skull***k them back to the border John Brown style.
-
https://twitter.com/mctait/status/1186446764670369793?s=21
Comments from Self.
I personally think this is not the right move. KU gains nothing by playing Mizzou.
-
I mean we have to fill a schedule and you can’t recreate this type of atmosphere. “Nothing to gain” doesn’t make sense to me.
This game preps our guys for the tournament as much as any.0
-
I love this, let’s go smoke them!
-
I do think this may be a ploy to increase demand for season tickets which ultimately ends up increasing donations for better tickets.
I know demand is down because they were selling them this year without even a Williams Fund Membership at all.
There is a reason they did this now.
-
Finally. I guaranteed after the exhibition game that it was over and that the series would resume. The evidence was undeniable and clear.
This ends an embarrassing chapter of Bill Self driven butt-hurt. We played the part of the bitter and vindictive ex-wife. Not a flattering look. Read the utterly silly quote below. He says he knew the fans missed it. The players missed it. And he missed it. Yet one man deprived us of years of enjoying the rivalry. Just plain stupidity.
And the interest in the exhibition was “far greater than (he) envisioned it would be?” Good grief. What planet does he live on?
“Jeff and I discussed the idea of playing Missouri on many occasions, including speaking with other coaches here at KU, and we all felt the timing is right to renew the rivalry,” Kansas head coach Bill Self said. “Even though we haven’t played the last few years, I know it was something our players and fans missed, and so did I. The interest generated in the 2017 exhibition game was far greater than I envisioned it would be, which made it obvious to me that our fans were eager to see a Border Showdown matchup."
Of course, the cynical @Kcmatt7 may have the distasteful answer.
-
Bad move. I’d be fine with an occasional SEC-B12 challenge matchup every 4 or 5 years, but pumping up that crap program and their fan base for 6 games is stupid.
My inlaws are all slavers, and I have not missed the basketball hatred one bit.
-
@DanR me either!
-
-
Also… This is probably the clearest signal to me that Bill Self isn’t planning to hang around beyond this year.
Sure, go ahead and schedule the Tigers in December 2020. Whatever!

Self did leave the door wiiiiiide open to restart the series after we played the charity game, and that predated Long by a month or so.
-
@DanR I hope not.
-
Yes, I’m excited! If Bill Self leaves, and I think it’s inevitable one of these years life as Jayhawk fans will go on. We’ll find another coach. Heck, maybe Roy comes back for his swan song!
-
@DanR - agreed…
-
I feel like this helps Missouri more than it helps Kansas, so I’m not thrilled about it.
Also I hate Missouri.

If you read the bill self comment He States that this has everything to do with ku scheduling This has nothing to do with Bill self leaving
-
@wissox Roy’s not coming back!
-
@DanR I agree 100%. I do believe this is self’s last hurrah…but…this renewed rivalry has me in state of confusion
1st…the Mizzou animosity.
2nd…The date doesnt make sense at all. that’s usually the game ku takes a road game so the kids can fly home on ku’s dime. Small recruiting bennie that’s now lost.
3rd…the length of the agreement is longer than any other contract. Pure speculation, but I’m presuming ku is figuring they are going to get hammered by the NCAA and will need these games as a cash grab until they get back on their feet.
-
I think there is a lot of reading into stuff going on here. Let’s wait to see what happens with Bill and the penalties.
Though there is no doubt this is to stoke the fires of the fan base. It’s clearly working.
-
@Kcmatt7 What does KU gain from this? Sure it is great for some of the fanbase that want to see the game played, but there are a lot of fans that do not.
Mizzou is irrelevant in the KC Metro area now that they are in the SEC. This game changes that. Also, there program is never talked about nationally and very rarely on national TV. This game changes that. I just fail to see how this game does anything for the KU program. It is not even arguable that this game does FAR more for Mizzou than it does for KU.
-
Should be a nice practice game

Agree – there are ALOT and I mean ALOT of fans that I’ve read and heard in the short time since they announced this that are NOT HAPPY at all , talking about what a stupid move this is and that we gain nothing - - Mizzery gains everything.
This is one of these games where if we kick their ass the response will be - - -WELL your suppose to beat them your KU your the so called blueblood - -as where IF we get beat you would think it was the 2nd coming or something. - -I would say well I know from what I’ve seen and heard different one’s the opinion is running about 2-1 if not more against this move - -but it’s no sweat of my - - - - - I’m not the one making these choices - -I say now that it’s been made just kick their ass and be done with it. - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Don’t feel ba about not being thrilled about it. - -there are ALOT and I mean ALOT of alum and others I have read and talked with that are not happy with this but then again - -who are we lmao. - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Agree , The reason you fail to see how this does anything for KU is - - -because it doesn’t. - Mizzery is a NOBODY - -they get their ass kicked on a regular bases in the SEC - and I really feel so sorry for that – no wait – - umm no I don’t lol. - - It was their choice to leave the Big 12 - tuck their little teager tails between their legs and leave - - -so great get the hell out - -but NOW they want to renew this series? – get that crap out of here go play UMKC or South - whatever directional School that is - -but we don’t want your sorry ass back around here – we gain NOTHING
True there are some fans that want this but from what I have seen off different places and talked with others they just say are you fricking kidding me? - -I hear ya man - -just chalk it up as just another stupid move
-
I will say that I wish Mizzou hadn’t left the B12 conference, because the KU-MU conference rivalry was probably the ugliest in the country–it actually meant something. But they fit in better with the SEC (Society of Ex Confederates) anyway.
I’m excited to get to use all my Mizzou insults again!
-
Why not play the slavers. It’s better than playing Western Michigan.
I don’t see the correlation between playing Missouri and Self leaving. If self was leaving he wouldn’t be busting his ass on the recruiting trail. That’s just my opinion though
-
If Mizzou was still in the conference it might mean something. But the way it is now, it looks like a money grab, pure and simple.

Mizzou being "irrelevant in the “Metro Area” is laughable and one of the weirdest false claims people seem to be making. It’s like they don’t even venture East of state line. Mizzou is still well represented in KC…
One game a season is not going to change Mizzou’s national status in basketball. Even if it is nationally televised.
Not playing our biggest rival every single season is stupid. It’s what makes college sports more fun.
Who cares if someone gets more gain than the other? Are we actually so petty that we’re going to hold a grudge for forever and ruin one of the best sports rivalries that exist?

The answer to your question of who cares is - - - - - - from the looks of things - - ALOT of people care - - that’s who cares - -a lot more against this then in favor looks to me like - -we owe these pieces of crap NOTHING - - they ran out of the big 12 didn’t want to associate /be associated with the Big 12 - -great - -get out - -this does nothing for us - -grudge or not period

Do you listen to sports talk Radio? How often do you hear Mizzou discussed compared to KU and KSU. It is not even close. It is not a false claim at all. I am out and about all the time in KC and I don’t hardly ever see or hear people talking about Mizzou.
It is plain and simple really. KU as a program gains literally nothing from playing this game. You as a KU fan might, but not the program.
-
Also, from everything I have seen and read KU fans are pretty much against this and Mizzou fans are over the moon about it. That should answer any questions about this.

Regular people don’t matter for this, the BMDs matter. This is a long term move but I would say Long has some ass kissing to do when it comes to the pleb portion of the fanbase (which I am definitely in, to be clear).
-
@BShark There is no doubt this is about money. There is already a FB game (s) in the works which will generate more money. It makes all the sense in the world for Mizzou to want to do this. I just do not see the value that this brings to KU.
I also think this shows Long does not have a very good pulse on the overall fanbase. He is getting bashed over this. On top of the Snoop debacle and this has not been his finest month or so.
-
I don’t live in the state and never lived in KC so I don’t have a good feel for the opinion of the fanbase, but I sure would like to have $10,000 to do a poll about it. These are broad generalizations and not aimed at any individual, but my sense is the more diehard fans are opposed and the more casual fans are for the Border War (I refuse to call it the Border “Showdown,” that name is stupid). At the end it was so ugly that a lot of fans were happy to see it go on indefinite hiatus.
-
KU has nothing to gain from this - -like others have said this is truly all about money - -it’s all about the revenue aspect.
From that stand point as a KU person - - why in the hell would I want one red penny going to that piece of crap School - - not one single plug nickel - -PERIOD. - -ya we gonna be sharing the profit revenue from this game - but if it were up to me these people wouldn’t get zilch - - nadda – zero - - NOTHING - they wanted out of the Big 12 - -wanted to dis-associate - good you did that, NOW that it’s happened why as a member of the Conference you wanted out of - -thought you was gaining by joining the all mighty SEC - -why should we have ANYTHING to do with you? - - why should we allow you to gain anything from playing us? - -don’t give me that rival crap - - rivals come - - rivals go at the end of the Day - were still KU - -were still in the Big 12.
Other then KU gaining some revenue you bring us NOTHING other then just being a pain in our ass.- – -Mizzery sure does nothing for the prestige of our program from a National perspective - -you seriously think it’s raising people’s eye brows if KU kicks Mizzery’s ass in Basketball? – if you do then let me take a hit off that pipe your smoking must be some really good stuff - Could you imagine ESPN using KU beating Mizzery in Basketball - ESPN using that as their lead story – OH shocking KU beat Mizzery in Basketball - -lmao – they do nothing to help us in that perspective.
Beating playing Mizzery doesn’t help us anymore in recruiting by playing their sorry ass - - it would not help us that much more if ANY in the recruiting area of the game - - we already do quite well enough and very much hold our own in that area with out having to play these idiots. - just do NOTHING - - -NOTHING in playing these guys from KU’S standpoints but for SOME KU fans to beat their chests /bragging rights - - -and actually beating Mizzery really isn’t a whole hell of a lot to Brag about. - -they bring nothing to the table from the SEC - -constantly getting their butts stomped in the SEC - - how gratifying is it to beat an also ran from the SEC ?
Sure now if we play and they beat us - -then they just wet all over themselves - thinking they have just won the NCA tourney - -cause in reality that’s just about as close as they are going to get to winning the NCAA tourney - -THEN I could see ESPN using that as a lead - -but they sure do nothing to help us on the National scale in any area – you create new rivals - Mizery is in the past - - old as dust - -time to move on - -nothing worth while to see here. – ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
@Woodrow Twitter pole I read, as reported by Matt Tait actually shows 66% of fans in favor, as am I.
It’s a no brainer good idea. A game to circle on the calendar every year. A game to look forward to. Although I try to watch every KU game, this one would draw more interest than a matchup against one of this years lightweights like whatever directional tennessee school we’re playing.
-
@jayballer73 The game is for the fans. I want to watch us play good schools. The media will talk about this one. The last time we played them was a big national story.
-
Money is something to gain. If BMDs hated it they could have donated a lot to prevent it.
I’m all for it honestly.

Mizzou is always going to be apart of the city. It is the premier college in Missouri far and away. To think otherwise is silly. They will ALWAYS have a base of alumni in KC because of this.
If tons of money and extra exposure are literally nothing, than sure, KU gains literally nothing.
But I think you (and others) are blowing this WAY out of proportion. It is a single game a season against a program we have notoriously dominated.
Can you tell me what you see as the downside of this? Because I guess that’s what I’m not seeing… KU is a program built on tradition. Nothing about 1 game a season is going to change that.

Big money donors. I bet they were all for it. They can hang out in the suites at Sprint and not have to deal with fans.

I’d imagine significant amounts of money for just one game too…
Between Williams Fund donations increasing, season ticket price increases, TV rights, and whatever else they can sneak in, we’re talking probably over $1M for just one game for each team.
-
Just my opinion, and everyone in here has the right to their opinions… but I’m glad the rivalry is back!
Is it worth it? Do we gain from this?
Let me put it this way… how many of you, regardless of what side you take, will circle the MU game every year?
Right… every single person in here will! It’s a game that matters. Sports is so much about rivalries…

Well, some opinions are right and yours is right.
No law against wrong opinions though, thankfully … at least not yet.
