Ty Berry

  • @teebee10

I noticed in your profile that you’ve only been on the board for a few months, so first, welcome aboard.

I used to do some amateur scouting with some friends of mine. Nothing serious, just evaluating players we saw from time to time. Every now and then, I evaluate highlights of different guys that KU is recruiting here. Generally, no one on these boards really knows those players, so it isn’t a big deal one way or another. You can see some of that here, here, or here for Billy Preston, Marcus Garrett and Silvio De Sousa.

What I am doing is nothing personal against Ty. I don’t know him personally. He seems to be a good person off the court from things I’ve heard other people say, and he’s certainly a talented sophomore player.

As I noted, if I were evaluating him, based on what I have seen, that’s what I would have in my report - I would want to do an in person, and I would want a follow up. From a scouting perspective, a follow up in person viewing is basically gold. Scouts don’t bother to do an in person if they don’t see talent. I see talent, certainly.

I saw his highlights. Ty is a skilled player, but Ty doesn’t have the eyepopping athleticism of a guy like John Wall or Derrick Rose at the point coming out of HS. Granted, those guys were coming out of HS and Ty is still just a sophomore.

Now obviously, Ty is more than two years away from college. He could put on 30 pounds of muscle in the next couple of years without any problem, and not lose any agility while adding explosiveness and power.

If I were a scout, I would want to do an in person, and get a second opinion on what someone else thought of his skill and athleticism. He can play. He’s a D1 recruit. But can he be productive at KU? That’s a completely different question.

  • @justanotherfan Ok, I see where you are coming from, but if you see this kid play a few games in person, I am quite sure your opinion would change. For some reason people don’t give Kansas high basketball the respect that it deserves. Jeremiah Earl Robinson, Zach Harvey, and Ty Berry can play with anyone in the country, But I do see what you are saying

  • @teebee10

You certainly make a good point about those guys being able to hang. I would add one other name to that list - KT Raimey, also with the KC Run GMC program.

I will admit to one thing - it is very hard to evaluate Kansas kids based on their HS program because many of the top players just don’t face off. For instance, it would be awesome to see Zach Harvey and Ty Berry match up, but because Newton is 5A and Hayden is 4A, that matchup probably never happens. Same with KT Raimey and those guys, since Olathe East is a 6A school. Perry Ellis and Willie Cauley-Stein never matched up even though they were both at 6A schools. You just don’t get to see the top players in Kansas face off most of the time because the shorter schedule (just 20 regular season games) limits regular season matchups, and because Kansas is big geographically but small population wise, the top players are often spread out and never play each other through their entire HS careers.

  • I hope it works out that KU lands Berry and Raimey. I like both of their games at this point.

  • @teebee10 when does newton play at hutch?

  • @Crimsonorblue22 Newton plays Hutch on Feb 13 at Hutch, but they play Hutch at Newton on January 2nd

  • Ty was at the game last night. 😀

  • @teebee10 saw a friend that said newton was getting a new or should I say an old coach back. Are you happy w/him? They said ty was thinking of switching schools.

  • Does anyone know how many D1 offers does Ty Berry have?

  • @BShark I like Berry, alot. But it would appear by watching the highlights that he needs to work on using his left hand and going to that side. That being said, I think that KU should strongly consider offering him a spot

  • I heard that Ty was at the under armour camp at IMG in Florida over the weekend and had a very good showing, was one of the top players there. Also he hang out with JRE . I bet that Jay Wright and Villanova will be coming for Ty really soon 😊

  • Ty is now rated a 4 star recruit by 247 sports.

  • Berry has also moved up 80 spots too.

  • Ty Berry is transferring to Sunrise Christian Academy for his senior year.

  • @alwaysajayhawk we won’t sign him, now that we have Harris.

  • I don’t think signing Harris rules out signing Ty Berry. Berry may end up moving to the wing with his shooting and size. He may be better suited on the wing long term, anyway.

The move to Sunrise is good for him as well. He’s a player that should be watched closely this year.

  • @justanotherfan like Braun I think Berry is much more appealing as a wing than a pg. Some kids do get stuck on position though.

  • Yeah I agree . I think that Berry can play a wing or be a really good combo guard, hes 6 "4 now and still probably going to grow an inch or two

  • For all of you guys in the Kansas city area both Ty Berry and Bryce Thompson are playing in overland park this weekend and could end up playing each other on Saturday night or Sunday in the championship. I would love to see them to square off against each other

I’m not sure Braun was ever going to be a PG at the college level. Berry could still be a PG at the college level, but I think his ceiling is higher on the wing.

I may also being viewing that because he is a better fit on KU rosterwise if he’s a wing player.

  • @justanotherfan probably d2 as a pg for Braun.

  • BShark said:

@justanotherfan probably d2 as a pg for Braun.

D2 Braun would destroy as a point forward with his size. If he played PG, he could maybe play low D1, but not P5. He’s going to be a nice wing player, though.

  • Just got done watching Ty Berry play live. All I can say is WOW!!!

  • @alwaysajayhawk tell us more

  • @alwaysajayhawk I would love for us to sign Berry.

Offering him a scholarship and actively recruiting him would be a good step towards that but it doesn’t seem like he is a priority from what I can tell. Could bite us if he ends up at Ok ST.

  • II don’t know if Ty Berry is a full 6-6 in his latest videos, but he is A LOT bigger and stronger than he was before. And that shooting stroke is still just as good. I would be curious to see how his athleticism increases with his added size and strength. Definite P5 target at this point.

  • @justanotherfan honestly if he grows into a 6’6 wing that can really shoot I’d probably take him.

  • This Berry you speak of…why are so many on here gaga about him?

We love our local players until they get to KU and then we rip them to shreds.

    I’ve never understood this…

  • @FarmerJayhawk and @Kcmatt7

I think this has a lot to do with expectations.

A D1 player here in Kansas will dominate the Kansas HS basketball scene, especially if they are P5 level. They will generally be a man among boys. I think this leads to unrealistic expectations of some of the players that come out of Kansas because we expect them to dominate because they set the HS scoring record, but they are really just a bench player at the D1 level (Conner Frankamp). That wasn’t on him. That was on fans because we thought he would turn into something he never was.

That’s why I critique players the way I do. I am trying to see what they can be at the college or pro level, rather than just what they are at the HS level. There are kids all over the country putting up crazy numbers against lower level competition. Now, sometimes that stuff translates to the next level. Other times it doesn’t.

  • @justanotherfan to be fair Conner and Marty had unrealistic expectations as well

  • @justanotherfan 100% agree. I watched Perry a couple times after he committed to KU and he was several notches above everyone else. Mark Mitchell will be the same (c/o '22 stud at Miege.) And a lot of times, the transition to P5 ball is rough. Perry’s freshman year was a total loss until the Big 12 tournament where it all clicked.

  • Ryan on the phog mentioned Berry has attitude and work ethic issues. If true that would help explain why KU hasn’t offered.

@bsrraygk48 If that’s the case, KU should move on and never look back!

  • @BShark That is so far from the truth. I heard from a very reliable source that Berry is just the opposite. Strong work ethic in the gym lifting and getting shots up , have you seen his body lately the muscle mass that he has put on since his freshman year, He is also a very good student and an exceptional person.

Well there is something about him the staff isn’t in love with.

I usually take those with a grain of salt. It’s pretty rare to find a non-knucklehead 16 year old. The guy on the Phog who starts a lot of them has never had anything good to say about the KU program. Don’t even know why he follows it honestly.

  • @Kcmatt7 Exactly. Not saying it is true but a proven fairly reliable source and there is something that is having KU hold up.

@FarmerJayhawk Oh be fair now Ryan isn’t tonto, lol.

  • Ty Berry may be a local-ish kid, but KU doesn’t want to keep stockpiling players with his profile. KU already has McBride, Harris, and Braun on the roster so I’m guessing Ty Berry is a low priority recruit because there are other positions that KU has greater need. As low as Berry is ranked, the staff also likely view Berry as a fall back option in case they miss on other higher profile players they are targeting.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 You could even argue that every HS recruit KU ended up taking this year is a 4 year player. Enaruna has the most potential upside to leave early and actually go pro, but he has a ways to go.

Yeah, I was talking about tonto. He’s got a weird thing about KU. Maybe Self banged his wife.

  • @FarmerJayhawk Yeah I’m not sure what the deal is there.

The Berry stuff came from Ryan, though he did hedge it slightly.

You’re right. I’ve been a fan of Berry for awhile now. Think it would be a mistake to not, at least, have someone camp out at his doorstep. I’m starting to think him to be a wing, if so a big take. If he has issues - which I didn’t hear until just now - , pause…

I totally agree… then add in a ton of wishful thinking. We all want to see a Kansas player rise to stardom!

It also just feels right. University of Kansas… Kansas players. I have to admit sometimes it feels a bit weird when we don’t have a single player from Kansas. Bill is on to this. He likes to have someone from Kansas on our team.

I know I like to see some Kansas players on our team.
