Garrett Appreciation Thread

  • Marcus might be playing angry this year. 👀

  • Marcus looks bigger these days. Really has filled out. Looks 200-210 now.

  • @BShark Garrett will be a great defensive spark plug coming off the bench. His decreased minutes will allow him to go full bore!

    Moss is the only possibility.

His minutes are not dropping much either way though.

I knew I was forgetting someone.

  • @Kcmatt7 He isn’t with the team yet which will hurt his chances imo.

  • Marcus needs to guarding the opponents best perimeter player and Dotson needs to guarding their worst to conserve his energy as much as possible because Dotson will be playing 35+ mpg without a quality bench player behind him. If McBride isn’t ready yet (very real possibility), Marcus Garrett is the back up PG.

  • Flaherty from 247 on Garrett, "In short, it hasn’t been pretty, but it might not be as far away as people think. Last season, Garrett had a noticeable hitch in his motion, something that led to him making just 12-of-49 3-pointers, or 24.5 percent. Said hitch is gone; Garrett is now shooting with a much more fluid motion, which makes sense; the Kansas staff has said before that they expect Garrett to be able to shoot eventually, as he’s one of the team’s hardest workers and few were going to get up as many shots. But he made just 1-of-9 3-pointers in the two scrimmages, and the one that he made bounced in. And while a number of those shots were on target, they rimmed out — including an in-and-out miss Tuesday — in large part thanks to a strange horizontal spin Garrett is still putting on the ball.

After the scrimmage, I called our director of basketball scouting, Jerry Meyer, who played at Lipscomb for Hall of Fame coach Don Meyer (his father), and who coached at Vanderbilt to ask about that side-spin problem. Meyer said most often, that motion was added by too much push from the off-hand thumb—in Garrett’s case, his left thumb. Another coach that I called confirmed the diagnosis, noting that it shouldn’t be a difficult adjustment to make. With no hitch and a shot that’s more consistently on line, Garrett’s already putting in the work.

Interestingly enough, when Issac McBride talked with media members afterward, he was asked — after watching last year’s team — which player surprised him the most. His answer was Garrett, with McBride noting that he had no idea Garrett was as offensively skilled as he was."

  • @FarmerJayhawk Shooting is a skill. That’s why I’m not worried about Marcus. He will eventually get it down pat.

Now tell me buddy , will that be in THIS decade - -or is something that younger people can look to in their futures lmao. – ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @jayballer73 I’ve never said - not one time - that Garrett should transfer.

  • @Kcmatt7 Starting 5 - Dok, Silvio, Agbaji, Dotson and Moss.

Why of course you didn’t - -let’s go down memory lane shall we?

2 days ago of the Mitch thread what you actually said was and I quote " - Let me say it Redshirt Mitch & Garrett. ( ok now you ready here is where you are telling Garrett - - ready ? ) - Oh No, Garrett might transfer ! - - then you say - - GO AHEAD - which your referring to Garrett to transfer - -again your telling Garett GO AHEAD TRANSFER. - - Because as we all know just like you was so careful to point out - - Really what DOES HE ( referring to Garrett ) - what does he offer ? – NOT SQUAT – referring that Marcus doesn’t do squat.

Ya ok there buddy you just keep thinking that - -telling him that ya go ahead transfer - - But wait you didn’t say that right? - - I mean it’s your story you stick that big boy. - -lmao – BUT sell that shit to someone else Cause I ain’t buying it & Marcus ain’t buying it – Marcus is staying right here -where he belongs - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @jayballer73 Easy … as I read it, he was fine if Garrett transferred as a consequence of Garrett being redshirted. That’s different than saying he should transfer. And we should also, I think, understand that a valuable player in one person’s eyes is not in another person’s. That’s debatable. And until Garrett can shoot better than the third best player on a 7th grad team, it’s a valid discussion point.

So, I said a long, long time ago, if Jamari Traylor never played here, we would have been a better team. That isn’t for lack of appreciation, that’s based on my belief that his net contributions were negative relative to the next best option.

On that point, I think @Marco loses in his position on Garrett. Garrett, I think, in the proper role, provides a strong net positive. But again, until he can actually shoot the ball at a semi-competent rate, that opinion is one that can easily be contested.

No sorry buddy I’m not sittin with this - -this guy saying Marcus hasn’t done squat - -that don’t fly with me – sorry man - -ain’t working with me - -he coming off to me as Marcus hasn’t don’t squat SO LEAVE - Marcus has done plenty

  • @jayballer73 That is not the same as saying that he should

  • @jayballer73 Didn’t say he hasn’t done squat, either. Relax, take a xanex.

  • @Marco @Jayballer73 is loyal to his guys, ease up.

  • I don’t mean to change the subject or anything, but have I mentioned what a freaking bum that Trevor " Can’t Pitch Worth a Crap" Williams really is?

Did you see Kevin Flaherty’s article on Garrett’s shooting? He talks about how Garrett’s shot doesn’t have the same hitch in it but also has a horizontal spin, which we have discussed on here about his and Dok’s shooting. Question is: if we notice it and sports writers notice it over the past year or two, why the blank is it still the same? Doesn’t seem like fixing that problem would be nuclear physics.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10

I’m with you on that… When we play teams that have a dominant offensive player (PG - 3 and sometimes 4) put Marcus on him.

Marcus is a huge weapon for us. Relieving his teammates from being stuck guarding tough assignments that can easily put them in foul trouble while they get scored on.

  • Marco said:

@jayballer73 That is not the same as saying that he should

you can spin twist turn whatever the hell you want to try an say it - -bottom line you saying Marcus hasn’t don’t squat is just totally insane - he has done about for this team intangibles -a statement like that is or just goes to show how little you really know about the kid or game.

I tell ya what Coach Marco - I bet ya this I bet if you ask the Coach’s or comment how Marcus hasn’t done squat - -I know this I bet there just might speak a little different then what your opinion is - I know that much

go back an read your post - -you said what does he offer - - -not squat - again twist the words around anyway you want bottom line you saying he has done squat - -if he doesn’t offer squat - then he hasn’t done sqat - doesn’t matter anymore just an insane statement - end of story thanks - take a zanex? - - could I borrow some , you got plenty? - -lmao - thanks for offering -I think me and baby Jane will stick with our 420 but appreciate it anyways - -have a great night – ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • Let’s remember how suddenly Marcus became an offensive threat… until he got banged up and slowed down. That happened before his high ankle sprain, which really hampered his game.

BTW, Marcus still isn’t 100%. I’m hopeful he gets there by the end of December.

  • @drgnslayr When he puts it all together, and he will put it all together … either this year or next… we’re going to feel ashamed how we dogged him.

  • BTW, Trevor Williams blows chunks …

  • @drgnslayr good point about his offensive game. Who was it, McBride, that said he had no idea how good Marcus is offensively. I distinctly remember the ISU game at home this past year and how Marcus was shredding the ISU defense almost every trip down the floor. Then the high ankle sprain happened and he wasn’t the same. I want that version of him this year with a plus 30% three point gun this year.

hmmmm - hmmmm - psssssst hello lol - don’t see me dogging him - -ask Jenny lol

  • 🐕 Ruff, ruff, Lol. I’ll say this, looking forward to seeing how he fits into the rotation this season and how much time he gets. I’ll admit it, I probably seemed to be unfairly dogging on him and didn’t mean to be so blunt. Next time I’ll type less while drinking more…

I love this post. We’re going to realize how important Marcus is in this rotation however it’ll be after he graduates. We talk about moving away frown AODs and move closer to a 4 star who bleeds crimson and blue. Marcus is that guy we want.

He’ll be a bench player but have started minutes.

Okay guys, I get it… I was a bit harsh in regard to Marcus. Even coaches can be wrong. Sincerely, Coach Marco

  • @Marco haha! Coaches can be wrong. Look at how Self read Ochai at first. And myself… I said frown instead of from in my previous post. Dang it!

Add Mitch to the bleed C&M bandwagon as well. Prison Mitch has been recruited over every year and yet he still stands. He may even take a red-shirt just to extend his time here. Who knows but in today’s climate 99/100 of those kids transfer for what they think is greener pastures and opportunity. Mitch has stuck it out. It’s a rare quality to see today.

Marcus is a hard worker. I think he’ll figure something out or recognize other ways he can help this team win games. I hope he takes all the criticism around his shooting ability as fuel and motivation.

  • @Marco LMAO…you’re alright, Coach…

  • @KUSTEVE Jenny says - good rockin tune! thanks

and as a drummer, its nice to see a drummer sing lead…

not sure why it’s in this thread, but I aint usually the sharpest crayon in the box.

Oh, and I LOVE Garrett - my fav current player. and based on the type of player he is, I’m sure people could guess my other fav KU past players…

someday I’ll attempt an in-depth analysis on how guys like him help win games without necessarily scoring.

  • @Bosthawk releford?

  • Yep… that’s definitely one… I loves me my team workhorse types… KY, JT.

  • I’d like to see Marcus step up this year and LEAD our defense! He’s earned that respect from his teammates. He just needs to step from out of the shadows. A bit more self-confidence should do the trick.

I’m pretty sure our coaches could work this concept into his psyche. The more we build his confidence, the more we see him contribute in all parts of his game. Might even help his jump shot fall at a higher rate.

I remember, back in the day, being coached into a more confident shot. I was trained to tell myself “I’m gonna get this one!” every time I went up for a shot. It helped me immensely, especially because I was a poor shooter in the first place. I think it helped me stay more focused throughout the shot and I put everything into each and every shot. I bet it lifted me 10% on my shot. It’s a natural and easy technique to do. I bet Marcus could gain from doing this.
