    The legend of McBride grows…

Didn’t miss a shot in the first half. Then he got hurt and the other team took the lead. He came back in and couldn’t quite lead them to a comeback win.

  • my expert impression: he sure falls down a lot after shooting threes, but he drives like a boss

  • @DanR

Might come in handy, 4 point plays…

Walking bucket. Give him an inch of space and he’s pulling up and putting it in the net.

  • @BShark Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet - -got some toughness - - nice contest - - outside J - looks like a sweet stroke

  • @BShark The second ball handler we need this year!

I don’t think he will be quite ready for that as a FR. But he can likely contribute next year. If just for his shot making alone.

  • @BShark shooters? Be nice!

  • @Crimsonorblue22 McBride and Braun are really good shooters so lets hope the rest of their games are good enough.

  • @BShark I think McBride may be quick enough to defend next season. I do not have that same thought of Braun at the moment… To me he looks like the redshirt candidate Ochai was supposed to look like this season.

After watching clips of McBride and seeing Braun play I totally agree. McBride if he is quick enough to defend will absolutely play because the rest is there with him. Only caveat with Braun is if he really is tall enough he could play some spot duty at the 4. That’s not a world I want to live in though.

  • I hope Braun proves to be good enough to play next yr as a spot up shooter. We need both to make buckets.

  • @BeddieKU23 perhaps. I think the only truly bad shooter will be Garrett. I am fairly hopeful that Grimes will take a step forward in that regard.

  • @BShark

We will take all of that 47% 3 point shooting next yr. Stud!

McBride and Braun = splash bros

  • @BShark I’d rather just have him and d dot! Sick of this dad!

  • @BShark he’s use to wearing rings!🤣

  • One thing is nearly for sure … we’ll be grumbling about Garrett’s shooting until he departs. But that grumbling depends on the cast around him. We barely complained in 2017-18 because he had a reasonable role. Starting, 25-30 minutes? That’s where heads explode.

    Shooters please.

I think we need RJ to bridge a year, but I get your point.

@HighEliteMajor This kid certainly fits the bill. Not sure he’s ready for big minutes as a FR though.

  • My take? A starting PG…

  • @Marco As a JR/SR sure.

  • Just realized that is premium and I don’t really see why sooo

Yes, Issac “Mackey” McBride is excited to arrive on campus.

“Yes sir, very excited,” McBride quickly corrects.

The three-star combo guard and one of the early-signing members of KU basketball’s 2019 class is the No. 131-ranked player in the 247Sports Composite and the No. 22-ranked combo guard nationally. He was discovered by KU assistant Kurtis Townsend in a similar fashion to how Townsend found Frank Mason, but he’s more than just a good story.

McBride chose Kansas for a reason. He wants to get better.

    A lot better.

The first steps of that improvement will begin this summer. In a recent phone call with Phog.net, McBride talked about the things he’s looking forward to upon arriving on campus. Unsurprisingly, there were quite a few things he mentioned.

“Pretty much the summer workouts, individuals and even with the team, but just trying to get better because the ultimate goal of why I decided to come to Kansas was to develop myself and try to be even better than I am right now at every aspect of the game," McBride said. "And also getting acclimated to campus and what’s around it, and knowing the people around there, getting to know them a little better.”

McBride, a 6-1, 170-pound combo guard, has spoken to Phog.net about his basketball philosophies and how they have been shaped by analytics — at least his mentality of attacking and making sure he’s taking the shots that get his team the most value. He thinks through the game like a point guard — or perhaps a coach — even when the coaches aren’t asking him to.

“I watched a lot [of KU last year] and was trying to see what I could do and work on to make an impact early on," McBride said. “I tried to look at specific sets, but coach told me not to worry about trying to look at plays and stuff because it changes every year. Offensively, they’ll try to put in new stuff. But I watched a lot of it.”

He was looking for the details, but he still was a fan at heart.

“It was kind of hard because even though I wasn’t there, I would get nervous,” McBride said. "But I just tried to watch and open my mind up and explore all the stuff that was in front of me on the floor.”

So then, McBride might not be a top-100 ranked recruit, but he absolutely possesses the mentality of a Day 1 contributor.

In fact, one of the Day 1 contributors from last season, Devon Dotson, has already been in his ear a little bit. The two have discussed topics off the court, and McBride has also linked up with Christian Braun, among others either on or joining the team, on social media.

Through all his conversations with players and staff members, he’s found things to take away. But he also recognizes there are going to be things he can’t quite prepare for.

“They just told me to come ready to work,” McBride said of the staff. "I don’t think any of the freshmen know exactly what’s going to happen, but you just come with the mindset and mentality that every day I’m going to try to become better at everything in life, whether it’s on the court or what we’re doing in our classes. That’s the type of mentality they tell us to come with. Just try and get better and work hard every day.”

And yes, McBride is embracing that advice, both on and off the court.

“I feel like as much as I’ll have time around Coach Townsend, Coach Self and Coach Howard and Coach Q and all the coaches on the staff,” McBride said, “I feel like I’ll learn a lot more about the game.”

  • cool story. big fan of him already. I do think he plays next year as a bit of spark plug offense. Might have a role similar to what Vick did earlier in his career

I could see us needing that. I think he’d be a great fit at the 2 next to Devon. Adds another shooter and he has incredible range.

Indeed. He might be only 6’1 but he jumps high on his shot. I love this kids play making ability and I think he carves out a role. How he defends probably decides if he’s the immediate back up to Devon

  • @BeddieKU23 Just found out that he apparently shot 48% from three this last season.

We might need him as a secondary ball handler this year.

I like him enough to say that we’re not going to need to recruit another starting PG for awhile.

Don’t get me wrong, I like McBride a lot. I just think he’s a better canned offense option off the bench for a couple years. And Daishen Nix is a STUD

  • Great article on the kc star about him. Can’t link on mobile. So many highlights including picking his major. We really got a keeper here folks.

Yes he is extremely likable. Have a feeling he goes down as someone we talk about for years to come

  • With guys ranked in this range, I tend to take a wait and see approach. I think Braun and McBride will both translate well to the college game, but I thought we would get more out of Anrio Adams and Brannen Greene than we did, too. McBride could be Frank Mason, or he could be Naadir Tharpe (on the court). It’s hard to project guys in that range because the outcomes are so broad. Some guys ranked there end up as All Americans and NBA players. Others wash out without ever making an impact.

Both Braun and McBride seem to be smart, thoughtful, hardworking players. That should help

  • The more I hear about Braun the more I like him. He’s going to need a year or two, but if he can add good weight and play at 6’8 205-210, look out. His skill level is really good. And may develop into a really good shooter.

  • It’s wise to take a wait see approach with ever player. It is hard to project, period. I though we’d get more out of presumed OAD Alexander, presumed OAD Diallo, presumed OAD Grimes, and presumed OAD Selby. On the other hand, presumed OAD X, presumed OAD Wiggins, and presumed OAD Jackson performed fine.

  • @FarmerJayhawk Do you think he has potential to be Svi like his jr/sr years?

  • @rockchalkwyo they’re different players, but I think that’s his ceiling. Braun has better ball skills at this point than Svi did, but Svi was the better pure shooter. Hard to say how Braun will develop for sure. Not sure he’ll ever be as good a shooter as Svi (who’s legit elite at this point). Struggling to come up with a great comp at this point but Svi isn’t a bad one.

Yeah I don’t expect either to contribute much this year. I think both could be RS candidates, but I’m thinking only one player ends up taking one.

This is just of course my amateur opinion, and I’ve been really wrong on guys before. Bragg was a big one there, I thought he would be excellent but it never materialized. But anyway…

I really really like McBride but your point awhile back about athleticism vs skill comes heavily into play here. McBride is very skilled, one of his skills (shooting) is even about as elite as you could ever hope for. So then what’s the problem? It’s very clearly his athleticism. If he were a Marcus or Ochai level athlete we would have been looking at a top 30 player imo. So he has to work on not being a liability on the defensive end. If he can do that and even be around average we are potentially looking at a high impact player his JR/SR year.

  • @BShark

McBride concerns me because of his size. He’s small and somewhat slight. I can’t really compare him to Frank Mason because he’s two inches taller, but about 15-20 pounds lighter. Frank was built like a bulldozer. McBride is built like a sportscar.

For guys built like that, they always have to maintain a speed and quickness advantage because they don’t have the physical strength to create space with power and explosion. You can create space either way, and obviously the greats can do it with all four, but most have to use one or two of those.

Think about a guy like Allen Iverson. He was always a blur, so even though he was small, his speed and quickness was elite, so he was difficult to handle.

On the other side of things, a guy like Frank Mason is quick and fast, but he has some power that allows him to bull his way through guys, particularly as he matured at the college level.

In between you have a guy like Conner Frankamp. He was a tremendous shooter, but he wasn’t elite from a quickness perspective or from a strength perspective. As a result, he was never able to maximize his elite shooting in college because he could not create the necessary space to operate.

For McBride, I think that’s his challenge. He’s a D1 level player with a clear elite level shooting skill. The question is whether he has the ability to create space to allow him to capitalize on that or not.

For Braun, the same questions exist. Because of his height, he doesn’t have to have the elite speed and quickness, or even the top notch strength and explosion. But at the same time, because of his height, he needs to be able to use that to get his clean looks to take advantage of his shooting, otherwise he will get bullied by 6-3 guys who take away his airspace.

I like Braun’s size, particularly if he can play at the 2. I like both Braun and McBride’s shooting. But they both have to demonstrate their ability to use their athleticism to access their skills, otherwise their skills are more or less going untapped.

  • @BeddieKU23 I think Braun - and I agree, he needs to put on weight and continue to improve - will be a pro.

  • @FarmerJayhawk I think that Braun - and I agree that he has to put on weight and work hard - will be a pro, ditto Enaruna and McBride.

  • @FarmerJayhawk Gordon Hayward, that is who Braun reminds me of.

  • @justanotherfan great analysis

@Marco no way on the Hayward comp

  • Marco said:

I see Braun as a Svi-lite type of player. If that’s his ceiling, he won’t play in the NBA, but he will be a very good college player.

I see McBride as a Devonte-lite type player. Again, if that’s his ceiling, he won’t play in the NBA, but will be a very good college player.

Enaruna, I don’t have a good projection on him. He seems like he has more room for growth physically and athletically, so he could be on the verge of breaking out. He could also be Carlton Bragg, where he always seems to be on the verge of breaking out.

  • My opinion is Mackey has elite quickness, and will break ankles better than Devonte, Dotson or Frank. His step back jumper is a work of art. He will shoot as good as Devonte, but i don’t think he is a natural driver like Frank or DD. Defense will probably be a challenge because he’s not a big guy.
