McBride Quotes, Articles etc...

  • Put him at the knee of Marcus, Charlie, and Devon for a year, and we’ve got a truly outstanding kid, both off and on the court. He is an ankle breaker deluxe, and he can flat shoot. Frank wishes he had that kind of quickness. That’s Devon Dotson quick.

  • Can you imagine Dotson, Marcus, and “Bake” on the perimeter next year? I’m telling you…Russ Rob, Mario, and Sherron could only dream of having quickness like that. I’m naming him Bake, after the old St Louis Cardinal outfielder, Bake McBryde. Wissox will remember him, I’m sure.

  • 😂

  • Very happy with this one. Sounds like he’s got a great head on his shoulders. I believe he’ll be a fan favorite

  • Scott Chasen did a video chat that included some stuff on McBride.

Some good nuggets are that he actually visited KU on his own two years ago just to check out KU. Also had decided to come to KU long before the late night visit.

  • @KUSTEVE @Crimsonorblue22 you two might like this kid…

Some quotes from McBride per Scott Chasen

McBride: “I had a lot of factors. I believe that college is a very important step into a person’s life, growing as a person. But the three really main factors that I had [started with my] development as a player — God giving me talent that I could use, glorifying him, so wherever I can develop it is hopefully going to be a place where I can get to the next level or somewhere where I can show God’s talent to other people.”

McBride: “Another factor was, of course, academics. Where can I push myself in the classroom, get a good education, a degree, so I can support my family in other ways? And the third thing would probably be the family environment, home environment, and also the atmosphere and the school and a place where I can worship God freely, have an opportunity not only just to play basketball, but to attend church, be in groups and be around people that will help me grow spiritually and as a man.”

McBride: “Coach Self, of course, is a Hall of Fame coach. And Coach Self is a great coach. I believe he pushes his players to where they need to get to. You know, all their players of course have extremely amazing talent, but they always need a successful coach. And there’s no other coach better than Coach Self himself. He’s done a great job with other programs, too. … I feel like Coach Self does a great job breaking down the games, game-film, breaking down what can happen in the game, making sure that situations are practiced.”

McBride: “Coach Self has probably the greatest basketball mind out of any coaches that you could put in the top 10 or top 5. And it shows. His teams are successful. And after 14 straight conference championships in one of the best conferences in basketball, it shows that it’s not just players. You have to have a coach always leading guys. And that’s a big part of basketball. So I believe that Coach Self is amazing, and I love him. He’s a great guy.”

  • @BShark Just blown away by that kid. Contrast that with Cliff’s attitude. You know him better than me…any chance he could play pg?

  • @KUSTEVE He’s a PG. Rivals has him as a PG. I think 24/7 listing him as CG is because he doesn’t have tremendous speed or athleticism. But PG is his natural position. He reminds me a lot of Graham. Issac will make a lot of threes before he is done in Lawrence.

  • @BShark

Nice to see a kid that has his priorities straight. I imagine that having the Big Dub as team chaplain helped some…or a lot.👍

KJ too. KJ is deeply religious and part of the reason I feel he sticks around is he realizes his future might not be playing pro ball. He might end up being a minister.

  • @KUSTEVE “Bake” good reference

  • “It was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up,” McBride told McPherson. “And it just kept calling me. I would think about other schools, but I would always go back to Kansas.

“The reason I want to go there is because that’s the Mecca of basketball. People say Chicago, New York, but, really, where basketball was created was right there in Kansas.”

McBride made an official visit to Kansas for Late Night and committed a couple of days later, picking KU over finalists Auburn and Virginia.

“When I went (to Kansas), the experience blew my mind,” McBride said Wednesday.

  • @BShark 😭😭 be proud to call him a son or a Jayhawk!

  • @BShark He blows me away. And he can shoot.

  • McBride dropped 58 pts in a game recently, broke a 25 year school record.

  • Here is video of the 3 games. The last one he had 58 in… absolute stud.

Self looked at the roster and was like “oh shit, need some shootun” which was definitely acquired with the two signees.

I have almost no doubt that Self will massacre the league and make a tournament run with RS JR Agbaji, JR Braun, JR McBride and whoever else is added to that future roster. 🙂

Agree, McBride has that assassin shooting streak in him. Really gets up on those jumpers which will help him playing bigger guys. I think he plays immediately

    The legend of McBride grows…

Didn’t miss a shot in the first half. Then he got hurt and the other team took the lead. He came back in and couldn’t quite lead them to a comeback win.

  • my expert impression: he sure falls down a lot after shooting threes, but he drives like a boss

  • @DanR

Might come in handy, 4 point plays…

Walking bucket. Give him an inch of space and he’s pulling up and putting it in the net.

  • @BShark Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet - -got some toughness - - nice contest - - outside J - looks like a sweet stroke

  • @BShark The second ball handler we need this year!

I don’t think he will be quite ready for that as a FR. But he can likely contribute next year. If just for his shot making alone.

  • @BShark shooters? Be nice!

  • @Crimsonorblue22 McBride and Braun are really good shooters so lets hope the rest of their games are good enough.

  • @BShark I think McBride may be quick enough to defend next season. I do not have that same thought of Braun at the moment… To me he looks like the redshirt candidate Ochai was supposed to look like this season.

After watching clips of McBride and seeing Braun play I totally agree. McBride if he is quick enough to defend will absolutely play because the rest is there with him. Only caveat with Braun is if he really is tall enough he could play some spot duty at the 4. That’s not a world I want to live in though.

  • I hope Braun proves to be good enough to play next yr as a spot up shooter. We need both to make buckets.

  • @BeddieKU23 perhaps. I think the only truly bad shooter will be Garrett. I am fairly hopeful that Grimes will take a step forward in that regard.

  • @BShark

We will take all of that 47% 3 point shooting next yr. Stud!

McBride and Braun = splash bros

  • @BShark I’d rather just have him and d dot! Sick of this dad!

  • @BShark he’s use to wearing rings!🤣

  • One thing is nearly for sure … we’ll be grumbling about Garrett’s shooting until he departs. But that grumbling depends on the cast around him. We barely complained in 2017-18 because he had a reasonable role. Starting, 25-30 minutes? That’s where heads explode.

    Shooters please.

I think we need RJ to bridge a year, but I get your point.

@HighEliteMajor This kid certainly fits the bill. Not sure he’s ready for big minutes as a FR though.

  • My take? A starting PG…

  • @Marco As a JR/SR sure.

  • Just realized that is premium and I don’t really see why sooo

Yes, Issac “Mackey” McBride is excited to arrive on campus.

“Yes sir, very excited,” McBride quickly corrects.

The three-star combo guard and one of the early-signing members of KU basketball’s 2019 class is the No. 131-ranked player in the 247Sports Composite and the No. 22-ranked combo guard nationally. He was discovered by KU assistant Kurtis Townsend in a similar fashion to how Townsend found Frank Mason, but he’s more than just a good story.

McBride chose Kansas for a reason. He wants to get better.

    A lot better.

The first steps of that improvement will begin this summer. In a recent phone call with Phog.net, McBride talked about the things he’s looking forward to upon arriving on campus. Unsurprisingly, there were quite a few things he mentioned.

“Pretty much the summer workouts, individuals and even with the team, but just trying to get better because the ultimate goal of why I decided to come to Kansas was to develop myself and try to be even better than I am right now at every aspect of the game," McBride said. "And also getting acclimated to campus and what’s around it, and knowing the people around there, getting to know them a little better.”

McBride, a 6-1, 170-pound combo guard, has spoken to Phog.net about his basketball philosophies and how they have been shaped by analytics — at least his mentality of attacking and making sure he’s taking the shots that get his team the most value. He thinks through the game like a point guard — or perhaps a coach — even when the coaches aren’t asking him to.

“I watched a lot [of KU last year] and was trying to see what I could do and work on to make an impact early on," McBride said. “I tried to look at specific sets, but coach told me not to worry about trying to look at plays and stuff because it changes every year. Offensively, they’ll try to put in new stuff. But I watched a lot of it.”

He was looking for the details, but he still was a fan at heart.

“It was kind of hard because even though I wasn’t there, I would get nervous,” McBride said. "But I just tried to watch and open my mind up and explore all the stuff that was in front of me on the floor.”

So then, McBride might not be a top-100 ranked recruit, but he absolutely possesses the mentality of a Day 1 contributor.

In fact, one of the Day 1 contributors from last season, Devon Dotson, has already been in his ear a little bit. The two have discussed topics off the court, and McBride has also linked up with Christian Braun, among others either on or joining the team, on social media.

Through all his conversations with players and staff members, he’s found things to take away. But he also recognizes there are going to be things he can’t quite prepare for.

“They just told me to come ready to work,” McBride said of the staff. "I don’t think any of the freshmen know exactly what’s going to happen, but you just come with the mindset and mentality that every day I’m going to try to become better at everything in life, whether it’s on the court or what we’re doing in our classes. That’s the type of mentality they tell us to come with. Just try and get better and work hard every day.”

And yes, McBride is embracing that advice, both on and off the court.

“I feel like as much as I’ll have time around Coach Townsend, Coach Self and Coach Howard and Coach Q and all the coaches on the staff,” McBride said, “I feel like I’ll learn a lot more about the game.”

  • @BShark I want guys like this. He is totally invested in our program.

  • cool story. big fan of him already. I do think he plays next year as a bit of spark plug offense. Might have a role similar to what Vick did earlier in his career
