New 2019 Recruiting

  • From Hillkick on the Phog, typically has good info.

"I havent spoken to my source as to why he flipped to Nova, but I can speak to why Kansas was in the top 2 and why since last year, we’ve seemed to be his second choice:

Why KU was in the mix: Self Loves the atmosphere, program Family (Adidas a non-issue…for the record, he’s on a Under Armour AAU team, but Goolsby runs the cleanest AAU program in the sport)

Why we fell to 2nd: Our recent history of loading up on talented bigs (DeSousa, McCormick, D Lawson, K Lawson, Azu) Leading for a similar player (Hurt) UNC (and Nova) are marquee programs but unlike KU/Duke/UK, are less likely to land one and done types that will take over program A little itch to get away. Not in a bratty way way like Bol Bol, but in a life growing way

JRE is a very polite, cool kid, who loves KU and was upfront with the staff that he wasn’t a slam dunk commit. It’s about his personal beliefs about playing early, a better chance at having a large role on O and experiencing life on his own before he’s a professional. "

  • My goodness, I dislike Jay Wright. I disliked him when Mario and the gang kicked his butt. I really dislike him now that he’s routinely kicking KU’s keister.

  • @mayjay I’m sure the NCAA has told them pretty much NOT to say much while this is going on

  • Kcmatt7 said:

Bill needs to be talking to Dante’s handler and start talking reclass already. Get him here and eligible however you have to do it.

that would be sweet.- -don’t think that’s going to happen but sure would be sweet. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • Kcmatt7 said:

The more I look, the more Dante looks ready to play college ball now, physically. He will be old enough to go pro. I see no reason why he wouldn’t reclass unless the NBA changed the OAD rule a year earlier than most expect.

I have heard that he is still kind of raw on the offensive, room for offensive growth- -But I would love to have him here watch him develop

  • @mayjay Self has referred to the trials next spring as the point behind why he wouldn’t/couldn’t talk more. I don’t know if there is some unwritten NCAA rule. I’m not aware of some written NCAA rule. It’s of course wise not tot talk, you might say something stupid or that could be misinterpreted.

But if true, Self’s clear denial is admirable and warranted. It not true, I’m not so sure anything he can say within that context (denials) can cause more damage.

  • Well certainly starting to look more like Malik Hall is Michigan state bound - - Slater – - Meyer – Snow and one other have all predict that either late last night or today. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Yep. KU didn’t show much interest there tbh.

  • @BShark Translation: " I have doubts about my abilities, and I am afraid they will over recruit me, so I better play it safe, and go with the inferior, safer offer."

  • Some quotes from Papa Stanley…

“Kansas has great, great basketball tradition,” said Cassius’ father, Jerome Stanley. “They win every year. It’s a great platform for him.

“Coach (Bill) Self is really impressive with his vision and how much he cares about his players. Cassius would be really lucky to go there.”

So after careful consideration after consideration I’m happy to announce that I will be attending the University of UCLA next year , really looking forward to playing under Coach Alford - -yada, yada , yada - - LMAO - - Daddy SOUNDS GOOD - but huge difference between talking and doing lol - - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Ah, have to love recruiting gallows humor.

  • Stanley’s dad on upcoming trip to Oregon

This coming weekend, Stanley will wrap up his official visits when he heads to Eugene.

“It’s a situation on the upswing,” Jerome said. “Dana Altman is a well-respected coach. They have great resources.

  • Stanley’s dad isn’t some dummy. Easy to see why they landed on the three schools they did.

  • @Kcmatt7 Hahahaha wow, yeah he’s playing the market. And yeah he knows the game, he is a sports agent iirc.

    That is correct. https://www.linkedin.com/in/wjeromestanley/

  • Just…lol…

This one is coming down to bids.

  • Malik Hall to Michigan State.

Good pickup for them. Watts & Hall are future starters

  • @BeddieKU23 I haven’t been shy about liking Hall’s game. I was hoping KU might make more of a play for him, but Self thought he was getting Jeremiah…

Yeah I liked Hall as well but we would have felt the same sting had we made him a priority after the FBI thing. SOL until spring unless Zeke pops

  • Hmm, perhaps.

  • I’m thinking that after this weekend , I think you will things really start to pick up concerning Zeke. -His dad has said more then like he will be choosing by the 24th of November , so I think we will start to hear a lot more about his recruiting. Just hope we are there on this one - ROCK CHAL ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • So is JRE good or has he been exposed by going to IMG? Why’d his ranking slip 20 spots? Might’ve dodged a non-performing bullet or might’ve lost out on a multi-year starter. I’m curious what people think? Stud or dud? Program changer or complimentary piece.

  • @dylans

What site are you saying dropping him 20 spots?

I think he would have been a great College Big at KU. Really smart player with a great motor. He does a lot of things well but he’s not elite at any one thing. We certainly would have been better with him then without

  • @BeddieKU23 he was ranked 18 now 38 on Rivals I believe.

  • dylans said:

He’s 38 on ESPN but he’s been there for a while and they haven’t done an update. Should get a bump now that he went to a Nike school.

He’s composite 18 on 247, 18 on their own rank. Rivals has him #10

  • Must’ve been ESPN that dropped him a couple months ago. Sent up red flags. A drop that big concerned me. Same as Jacobs falling off. Difference being only one service dropped him. Of course he dropped about 50 spots on my mind when he played for Self over the summer and chose to commit to the enemy.

  • dylans said:

ESPN has him underranked by about 20 spots. He’s a top 20 kid in a weak class. Big disappointment he’s going to ball out at another school

  • @BeddieKU23 haha says you! I say he’s an over ranked pussy…or wildcat I guess.

  • @BeddieKU23 would’ve liked to have him, but I guess I wasn’t too high on his game. Thanks for weighing in! I really don’t have that strong of an opinion on the matter.

  • dylans said:

Don’t be hater bud - -JRE is a VERY good player. Just because he chose another school doesn’t make him a bad player lol - -If he for real was over rated you wouldn’t see nearly as many of the Big time schools recruiting him - -N Carolina – KU-- -Arizona - - and many others just a little sample - - sucks we lost out but he is very good - -loved his play this summer with Self.

He came out and said he loves KU - - he said he just hated it that someone had put it out that he was 100 % -KU. - -He said one of the big reasons that hurt us was how in recent history KU has been loading up with Big men - -He really wants that chance to play the 4 -Villanova told him he could do that there.

With all the bigs at KU - he said he just felt he wouldn’t have the chance to contribute as soon as he like - -I don’t hate the kid-like I’ve always said one these kids - -KU was fine BEFORE these kids came - - KU will be fine AFTER these kids go lol - -were gonna be ok - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • That’s hilarious. Mitch Lightfoot has been getting minutes. I just haven’t been in the Least bit wowed by JREs athletisicm. It’s no reversal I didn’t want him, but would’ve accepted him with open arms if he came. He just does nothing for me, but my opinion is based on a limited sample size. So I asked for more input. Not hating, but I never loved his game either.

-sounds like some really liked him and we’re hanging their hat on his signing. I’m sorry for your loss, but I think we’ll be ok. Next years class may be way off because of the fbi crap. The worst thing that could happen is loading up on 100+ ranked players and being stuck with than all for four years.

Actually I’ll do a reversal on that one - I am hating on any player that plays for Jay. I can’t get behind him. Jay could save sister Jean from a burning building and I’d think it was for self serving reasons.

  • After listening to Matt Scott on the podcast that @BShark posted yesterday I honestly think this came down to Nova telling him he could play the 3. Why he thinks he is a 3 is beyond me and most scouts, but hey that’s his prerogative.

  • @Woodrow That’s just silly by him. Svi played the 4. Smh

I guess if Dedrick and Dok come back and DeSousa is declared eligible and comes back there is no way JRE would get minutes as a frosh. Doesn’t seem too likely. Oh well hopefully Hurt or Nnaji will sign and a couple guys return and we quickly forget about Lester’s kid.

  • @Woodrow There ya go. He wouldn’t sniff the 3 with us. You would think him watching Dedric go crazy, and Svi last year that playing the 4 was not a big deal. Oh well…good luck to JRE trying to play the 3.

  • @dylans

JRE is a very good player but likely not elite. It reminds some of Travis Releford who at one time was ranked as high as #12 but ended up a lot lower. He red shirted his sophomore year and ended up being a solid player who started his last two years and was a big asset to the program; in many ways, the ideal college player. JRE played well at the Under 18 Tournament and would have been a good match to Hurt.

As I said before, once prospects get attention from college coaches they start to believe they are better than they really are. Every player in the top 5 believes he is the next Jordan or Bird or Magic, ever player in the top 20 believes he will a NBA super star and every player in the top 100 believes he will end up in the NBA…and we are still waiting for the next Jordan, maybe 1 in every draft becomes a super star and only a handful even make it to he next level.

Huge unrealistic expectations more often than not fueled by family and friends who see the prospect as their future meal ticket and thus created expectations that cannot be met. He will be a fine college player and has a decent chance of making it to the next level once he comes to terms with his strengths and weaknesses. He will be very good player for Villanova but not an OAD.

A man’s GOT to know his limitations - Inspector “Dirty” Harry Callahan.

  • @KUSTEVE Basetball is heading towards a more positionless place anyway. Combo guards and point forwards are not unusual these days.

I wonder if playing the 3 is the allure or if it’s just the FBI stuff and he’s letting us off the hook gently?

  • For those of you who are worried, here are Coach Self’s comments after the game…

    HEAD COACH BILL SELF

    Opening statement:

"I thought we were bad in the first half. I thought our starters played well and when we subbed, it was about even. I think the second half, gosh dang, our starters had the best ten minutes they’ve had all year. The 22-0 run, that was good. There were good things that happened, obviously. Quentin and Devon weren’t getting shots in the first half but they were obviously better in the second half. But I thought Lagerald, Dedric, Doke and Charlie all had pretty solid games."

Again remember KU went on a 22-0 run that extended to a 33-5 run. This team can play once it gets it rhythm together.

  • @JayHawkFanToo Wrong thread maybe?

  • @dylans

Oops…mos posters read all threads anyway. I will also post it to the correct thread.🤭

The FBI stuff had nothing to do with JRE’s decision. Wright promised him a lot of run on the perimeter, which we didn’t. He also just really liked the school; it’s smaller, and culturally more like what he was used to at Miege. Very good academics as well.

Agree. Some good stuff in that podcast.

Long term I’m not sure what his place in the NBA would be without him developing his perimeter shot. He’s not that big for NBA standards but in College he would have been just fine. Going to Nova seems like a good place to work on his shot and I think recently he’s been showing improved range.

I liked certain intangibles about him. His Effort, BBIQ, has a real knack for getting involved in plays and being around the rim at the right moment. He looked to be of high character and a team player and with all his ties to the program and being a local recruit it seemed like a good fit. I think he was capable of coming here and playing a ton as a freshman and then being a key contributor as a soph and beyond if he stayed. Oh well, I’ll wish him luck with Wright
