2019 Recruiting

  • @jayballer73

I don’t think Mann has a say in his recruitment it sounds. If UNC wants that baggage that’s fine. More often then not those types end up having some kind of issue. If he comes here, I’ll welcome him and hope he is as good as advertised. His shooting ability is something that we could really use

  • @BeddieKU23 - will you site this reference regarding Mann’s recruitment? Thanks!

I’m not sure that he would be like a must get anyways. - I mean I just don’t think Dotson & Moore are going any wear in 19 - -so they’ll both be back. Dotson is quick as quick can be ----but he isn’t a one and done by any means I think he is more like a 2-3 yr player - Moore will be a 4 year player - I just don’t see the need. - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

    I’ll find.

KU gets the last visit for Mann.

  • @Gorilla72

A guy on the Florida board who seems to be pretty well connected said that Mann will commit to UNC on or shortly after his OV. The only way he won’t end up at UNC is if Mann’s mentor gets in the way here.

This off UNC’s board. I’ll track down Florida’s comments. The Florida guy is well connected in AAU.

Do you have info to support that, or just a hunch? Not coming at you, I’m actually curious to see if you’ve heard something.

ETA- Sorry Bulls, I’m unfamiliar with your sources since we haven’t really crossed path on these boards. It looks like the Florida posters have vouched for your sources. Glad to hear this as a UNC fan

Live in Gainesville, pretty close to this recruitment, would be very surprising if UNC isn’t the pick, and soon. Only thing that prevents that is if his handler moves in another direction.

Listen, I know all the players in this recruitment, I also know his “handler” is telling people Tre may take some repeat visits. I am also aware of Rob Lanier’s connection to Tre. All that said, he decided against committing in late July because he wants to go to a blue blood bball school and wanted those offers. Again unless his “handler” tells him he can’t go to UNC, he’ll be a Tar Heel.

We are going to need shooting. Grimes, Vick gone. Williamson is more a wing at this stage if we land him. Mann is a combo guard that is deadly off the dribble and one of the best shooters in the entire class. I have to think Mann fits a clear need. We have not seen Moore or Dotson prove their shooting just yet.

  • 247 had an update to Rankings.

    Commit:

Jacobs barely holds his 4 star status at #137

    Top Targets

After a strong summer Hurt drops to #8.

    JRE #18

    Cole Anthony #2

    Williamson #55

    Targets:

    Wiseman #1 (no chance)

    Achiuwa #5

    Josh Green #15

    Tre Mann #23

    Stanley #26

    Zeke Nnaji #31

    Cockburn #37

    Kai Jones #53

    Dj Jeffries #68

    Lawson #89

  • Thinking about this more now, I wonder if KJ stays to finish up his eligibility. I doubt it, as he should have his degree. I think the plan is probably both KJ and Dedric will be gone.

    Doke is likely gone.

I assume SDS is gone too. Either he is eligible and Scouts love his athleticism or he is ineligible and he is forced to leave. Either way, don’t think he is back.

Finally, I expect Grimes to leave.

That puts the 2019-2020 Depth Chart like this:

    • PG: Dotson, Moore, Jacobs
    • SG: Garrett
    • SF: Agbaji
    • PF: Lightfoot
    • C: Big Dave

At this point, I’d say we have 6 scholarships to dish out.

My predictions on who we land:

    • PG: None.
    • SG/SF: Achiuwa and a transfer
    • PF: Hurt and JRE
    • C: Cockburn

We need another post added to this class, but I just find it unlikely that it is anyone we have heard of so far.

  • @Kcmatt7

Not an exciting group if that’s what’s left after this year.

I think Dotson will get a combine invite. I hope we get at least two years from him.

We will need shooting. I see Williamson as a realistic target. Things have been quiet lately though on his front and Louisville has made a push under the new regime. They expect to host him on an official.

Hurt is a can’t miss prospect in this class. Shooting next, then another big to go along with Hurt.

Not a lot of clarity on this class right now

  • @BeddieKU23 Yea next season’s group looks like they may really struggle. I’d like to land Williamson, but if we land someone who might play in front of him I don’t think he comes. He will want a starting spot I think. And I don’t know that we can promise that right this second.

  • I’m not really worried about Williamson nearly as much as Robinson Earle-I think Williamson we are sitting pretty sweet. - Next year could be a challenge for Coach BUT he has come through just fine before. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • Some KU related news on former players.

As we know, Newman started with a two-way contract with the Lakers and then he was cut. He has now signed a two-way contract with the Miami Heath; maybe a bit of Chalmers’ good will remaining? Hopefully he develops like Mario did.

Arthur was traded from Denver to the Nets. hopefully he gets more playing time than he did with Denver although his salary there was insanely high in relation to playing time.

  • @JayHawkFanToo

That’s good for Arthur though. Getting traded from a rising team to a terrible team isn’t

  • @Kcmatt7

Williamson is a program player. Appropriately ranked I think. Right now he’s probably the best bet we have with a wing.

Achiuwa is a wildcard, Norm has been consistent with him but it certainly feels like he won’t leave the East.

Green & Stanley are real longshots. Staff has been in contact with Jeffries but who seriously doesn’t think he’s going to Memphis.

Williamson could really be the highest ranked wing KU has a chance with.

This isn’t shaping up as a cycle we get to pick and choose from. A lot rides on Hurt and JRE here

  • @BeddieKU23

A class of Williamson, Hurt and JRE would be ideal, 2 out of 3 good to very good, 1 out of 3 average to good. If KU loses all 3 it would be very worrisome.

  • @BeddieKU23 I think so too. But I feel like more and more you see #50 guys going somewhere they can get PT immediately. He’d be coming in and facing quite a bit of competition for minutes here I think.

  • Kcmatt7 said:

That is true, you do see a lot of players ranked in that area going places they know they can start/contribute without much resistance.

We’ll see what happens. We don’t know what position Garrett will settle on just yet, I think that depends on how much he improves his shooting. Agbaji seems like a redshirt candidate so we are a year away from finding out anything significant with him. I think Self can sell playing time to a player like Williamson because he does have a strong midrange/perimeter game already with great size. There is a ton of scoring and talent leaving the program after this year. The sell should be pretty easy

  • @BeddieKU23 I’m really anxious to see Agbaji play.

  • Samuel Williamson just set his OV for next weekend. Hopefully he pops on the visit.

  • @Woodrow

Certainly sounds like that could happen

  • Woodrow said:

Oh that would be nice wouldn’t it - -get it officially started for the upcoming year. - -I think he just might surprise some people - would be a nice way to get things started

It sure would be nice and it might start the domino effect with the othre targets and for a change we would not have to sweat until the last minute for Coach Self to pull a rabbit from the hat.

  • Ok guys , got a question. - Would I just be totally way out over the left field fence - just totally insane in possibly trying to compare Williamson a little to Wayne Selden? - -Is that just totally nuts? - -if it is it’s ok tell me O can take it - -but just a spur of the moment thing. - I mean they are both right about the same height aren’t they? - -Wasn’t Wayne like 6’6? - -both hit the mid range jumper - -Wayne used to every now and then maybe not very often but once and awhile back his defender down and then hit the J. - -Just curious I would be happy with that , like I said it was just a spur type thing looking for some kind of comparison and that was my 1st thought - - hey I’m 64 getting old senile lol. - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @jayballer73

From what I’ve seen there is no comparing the two. Wayne was a beast in high school and used his physical and athletic ability to overpower kids. He was also a top 10 player in his class.

Williamson plays the game completely different. He’s a shooter, good in the mid-range. I think he reminds of Svi more then anyone at this stage. Good size (height) , will need to gain muscle to maximize his frame. Good athlete with some bounce, you see he can easily sky up for a lob or transition dunk. The word about him is he’ll need some time, time to develop some toughness and dog to his game. Great 3-4 year player to get and appropriately ranked. Fills a huge need for a scoring wing

  • @Kcmatt7 Much more likely to get Chandler Lawson than Achiuwa. Also Sam Williamson is all but a Hawk at this point. I also think Zeke Nnaji is much more likely than Cockburn, but I’m not thinking either ends up at KU if things go according to plan.

@jayballer73 @BeddieKU23 The staff really likes Issac McBride. He’s already been on a stealth unofficial visit and will be back for an official.

My early guess at next year’s roster…

G: Dotson, Moore, McBride, Jacobs or a home run type signing ie Anthony or Hampton

    G/W: Garrett, Agbaji, Williamson

    W/F: KJ, Chandler

    F/C: McCormack, Mitch, Hurt, JRE

  • @BShark

    Welcome back.👍

  • @BShark

    Welcome Back.

I can’t see us taking McBride & Jacobs both, can you?.We could have 4 guys under the height of 6’2 battling for one position. Doesn’t sound ideal? McBride would seem to indicate Dotson could be OAD? Concur?

I guess we could roll with two small guards again like the Frank/Devonte days. Just can’t say that’s ideal

Dam BShark great to see you back and of course you giving me my fix on the recruiting - so greatly appreciated . So I had read that Cockburn was going to visit this month, - -what happened to that did he visit or what? - I don’t think we are getting Achiuwa - I just can’t see him leaving the Coast could be wrong. You really think Chandler still comes here after Penny being hired at Memphis ? - Before I thought it was pretty much a given - now with Penny not so sure but I mean I would like to have him but if we land Hurt and Earle for sure no deal breaker. - - Honestly? - -I would much rather have his younger brother think he is the best in the group hopefully we can get him here.

Had to laugh at a poster of the LJW was talking about Williamson saying he was barely top 75 and JRE and Hurt was much more priority. - I will say true they for sure are a higher priority I would think BUT I still want Williamson he would be a sweet pick up - The only thing is if WE really want to land these guys why in THE HELL are we having them come in on the weekend of a football game lmao. Seems like that happens a lot. Aren’t you suppose to bring in a kid and show him the attractiveness of the campus and school? - Umm our football isn’t very attractive right now with an empty stadium on game day. - Yet I told this guy of the LJW I said man if your going to try and state facts at least get them right I said Williamson is a far cry from just barely top 75. - - Rivals # 35 - - - 247 sports # 41 – & ESPN- - # 44 that’s a little higher then barely top 75. - -Great to have you back buddy and as always ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @jayballer73

It might not be as bad a move to bring them on a football weekend as you think. It sends a message that screams at KU basketball is king, period. When players visit schools like Bama, Georgia, Auburn, Texas…they quickly get the message that football rules…which school would be more attractive to a basketball prospect?

I think the staff will try to get Anthony or Hampton and ultimately miss. So it’s definitely not the ideal situation.

If McBride commits to KU before Anthony and Hampton announce, it would signal to me that KU and Jacobs are likely parting ways.

If the roster scenario I laid out does happen then imo

    Starting line-up

    Dotson

    Garrett

    KJ

    Hurt

    JRE

Strong bench contributors: McCormack, Moore, Williamson

Comfortable leads and teaching a lesson minutes: Mitch, Chandler

    Development cycle: Agbaji, Jacobs, McBride.

The shooting in the starting line-up would be a bit rough w/o further development, so we will see.

  • @BShark

I have a feeling the roster for next season (19-20) will look different then we can even project right now. The last time a roster looked so bare looking forward Self went out and snatched 3 transfers… I think he’ll see the lack of star power as well and find a way to hit a home run somewhere.

Hurt is a can’t miss prospect for this years class. That much is clear.

I have no idea what will happen with Jacobs. It looks like he’s been hit and miss since committing on the court. The recruiting services seem to be dropping him every update. Some players plateau developmentally. PG isn’t a position of need if we assume Dotson returns for a 2nd season.

Between McBride & Jacobs you would have a great prospect if you could combine them into one. Jacobs athleticism and attitude with McBride’s shooting ability and PG skills. After seeing the story on McBride, certainly sounds as if he impressed the boss man. You can see some BIFM in his game

  • @BeddieKU23 Fair enough. Though I think he might be selling Hurt on having a starring role which he absolutely would. KJ would have to step up into a bigger role and Dotson would be bearing a heavy load as well. I’m just not sure where the star signing would come from, outside of Hurt.

Seems like a year to mostly develop from within, especially the guards.

Well ya guess that’s true , hadn’t really thought about it like that I reckon. In this particular case I am really not overly worried anyways, with His family going to KU he has been introduced to KU pretty solidly anyways I imagine and he knows all about the KU football program difficulities -but yet your 100% right. - I sure would like to see it become at least somewhat of a more balanced sports situation though you know? - I mean at least to where we as fans could look forward to a nice Saturday afternoon of College Football to compliment our basketball. plus isn’t it true as I have heard I believe that football is the revenue maker in College sports?

Anyways with this recruit I think we are in good shape. Some think he might even pop early - that would be nice. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @BeddieKU23

Jacobs is an interesting situation. All the articles I have read of him (which there are not many) seem to indicate he is playing well. The drop in the rankings is somewhat surprising and worrisome; I wonder if his height is being factored as a bigger negative than we think, particularly when ranking services appear to be gearing up to evaluate player for immediate NBA potential since that is coming in the not too distant future and Jacosbs pro potential appears very limited.

Every picture I have seen of him he is always wearing KU gear and it would be pretty tough for him not to come, at least initially, to KU.

I’m just going to c/p a post I made on the phog recently to start.

As for Jacobs I have family and friends in Chicago and the reviews are pretty mixed. He sounds like he has the pitbull mentality/right amount of crazy you need to succeed under Self and he does some nice things, but he needs to increase his skill level. He absolutely loves KU so it would be a big feel bad if KU essentially cut him and it probably wouldn’t go over well with Mac Fire either.

    Additional comments

So yeah Adam Miller is a stud PG that is also playing for Mac Irvin Fire. If KU/Self cuts Jacobs, and it isn’t a mutual decision that would likely effect KU’s chances there.

KU is well positioned for a strong guard haul in 2020 (Berry, Miller, Thompson, Strawther*), but when you start eliminating some of the options essentially, it could end poorly. For this reason I think there is a chance KU sticks it out with Jacobs. Though I believe Illinois is EXTREMELY strong with Miller and very much the favorite at this time.

From a pure basketball standpoint I would take Issac McBride. He’s really good but has been under the radar for a long time. For awhile his AAU team was team Penny which had the Lawsons, James Wiseman, Zion Harmon, DJ Jeffries etc…

He got a bit more exposure, and his KU offer when he switched to Joe Johnson Arkansas Hawks this Spring/Summer iirc.

*Strawther might end up more of a forward. Very talented and loves KU. Not entirely sure of the connection there.

  • @BShark

Based on rankings, who would have thought Mason would end up consensus POY? Or Devonte barely miss it? Amazing development for both and big kudos to the staff that saw that potential.

KU used to be Big U but recently has developed more guards and wings than bigs. If Jacobs develops to be 70%-80% as good as Mason or Graham I would be pleased.

  • @JayHawkFanToo I’m not going off rankings with Jacobs and the kid that would possibly be replacing him is unranked. Mostly for the reasons I laid out but is a he’s a hell of a player.

  • Jacobs is playing well but not getting a lot better. I certainly have questions about his long term ceiling. With Frank I never did. He’s a freak show of an athlete and a great leader. Jacobs isn’t either of those (at least yet).

  • Now we have more room

  • @BShark

Bingo. McBride can make his way down…

  • He would’ve had Dotson and Charlie ahead of him. Good kid, but it could take years for him to make an impact with us. Let’s get somebody with some height who can drill it from 3 with good handles.

There is a player who you are describing. His last name is McBride. 🤔

  • UNC is the favorite, but KU sits better with Tre Mann than most believe.
