2019 Recruiting

Arizona out here taking unranked kids.

  • Should be a 4* based on talent though.

  • His body is already college ready. Looks like a goo pickup actually.

Yeah I made sure to add that he should be a 4*. Kinda a Svi situation. It’s fun to shit on Zona though.

  • Looks decent. Arizona needs anything.

  • @justanotherfan Marcus had a bad shooting year from the 3 point line. He still shot 55% from inside the perimeter. He will improve both his 3 point and his free throw shooting. He is too conscientious a player not to work on his game. These kids are young and growing their games. Garrett isn’t the first freshman we thought couldn’t shoot. Frank Mason shot 32% from 3 his freshman year, and that worked out pretty good.

  • Akinjo to Georgetown.

Memphis lands Antwann Jones (top 100 SG) that was previously SIGNED with A&M and former KSU reject Isaiah Maurice.

Antwann Jones on his 90th school in the last 3 months. Wow that’s just crazy

Maurice is a bad apple. Memphis just filling bodies especially since their top 5 players coming back are Seniors

  • Akinjo to Georgetown made sense after he canceled his Arizona trip

  • Just like that Thielemans ranked just outside the Top 100 (#103) for Arizona

  • Tyler Harris to Memphis as well

    TJ Moss to South Carolina

  • In actual 2019 news, OSU adds the Boone twins from Tulsa. I don’t think they have profiles on Rivals, ESPN or 247 but they can hoop. Frank Haith was after them hard of course. Good to see they mad a smarter decision.

  • @BeddieKU23 Yeah I wouldn’t go anywhere near Jones. What’s the deal with Maurice? I assumed Bruce gave him the axe because he couldn’t play.

Not surprising the AZ commit got ranked. The same thing would happen if he picked UK, Duke, KU etc…

Maurice is a headcase. I don’t see him lasting at Memphis either.

Memphis filled its roster awful quick

  • @BeddieKU23 Yeah I don’t think that was ever in doubt. Knew Penny would get kids. Now can he coach them into a cohesive team is another story…

  • Ground breaking VIP stuff on 247 on Chandler Lawson. He really likes KU and Memphis, and they will likely be his final 2.

  • @KUSTEVE

I wholeheartedly agree that Marcus will work on his game. However, I am not as certain that he will become a knockdown perimeter shooter. I am hoping he becomes a solid shooter that can keep the defense honest.

  • @justanotherfan

I believe Garret has a good shooting form but he just did not have the repetitions required to develop a consistent 3 point shot, in great part because it really was not critical considering how many other shooters KU had.

I believe that he will eventually get to 35% from 3.

  • Yeah I think he can get in the low 30s which is livable.

  • @JayHawkFanToo , @BShark

Agreed. Given his skillset, if he can shoot 33%, he is certainly playable with his defense, ballhandling, rebounding, etc.

It’s the below 30% that makes it hard because you don’t have to guard him. He doesn’t have to be 40%, but he does have to get where you guys have outlined.

  • Sounds like he’s been playing point forward for Sunrise per his coach.

  • 3 top 100 HS players in the state of KS in the same year?!? Cool. Hope JRE bleeds crimson and blue. Really hope Harvey gets his stuff taken care of. Hall gonna ball at KU? The 6’11” guy from Wichita is gonna be a load for someone to handle a few years from now too.

  • @dylans sure seems like Sunrise has cranked it up a notch. And I’m not mad about it.

  • @dylans @Kcmatt7

Unusual for Kansas to have even one top 100 prospect let alone three.👍

Looks like Sunrise is becoming a player in the basketball prep school world. I believe Buddy Hield went there.

    Yeah not worried about JRE.

Hall isn’t really a KS kid like JRE or Harvey. Born in CA and spent a lot of his childhood in Illinois too.

  • Picked up a CB pick for RJ Hampton.

  • So Matt can’t say much but he did let me know that the already committed player is a player that KU hasn’t been publicly mentioned/linked with before. Interesting.

  • @BShark I’m not following. We have a commit for 2018 or 2019?

  • @BShark This feels like Matt making up info so people stay off his back for the next two weeks waiting on the Romeo decision.

  • Kcmatt7 said:

I would think that if I hadn’t seen this rumor elsewhere before Matt.

  • If we do have a commit, wonder why they haven’t announced it.

  • @KUSTEVE nah, this is supposedly a guy that could be a fallback option for KU if we miss on Langford. This mystery person has already committed elsewhere but not signed. If true, it would actually explain why KU hasn’t been chasing anyone else.

  • RockkChalkk said:

Correct. I believe it is all but done if Romeo goes elsewhere. Of course the name can’t be mentioned now or it could screw the kid out of his current situation.

  • @BShark

Is it supposed to be a ranked player, say top 30-50 or just a program player with potential? Isn’t talking to a committed player frowned upon? I remember Calipari getting a lot of flack for having Terrence Jones decommit fro Washington and sign with UK immediately. I believe he also got Enes Kanter who had also committed to Washington the same year.

  • @BShark

Did Kevin Porter sign an LOI with USC?

  • @BeddieKU23 Yes, in November.

  • @BShark

Boy Matt is really making us think with this one.

I can’t figure this one out. Almost think its someone who signed in Nov

  • @BeddieKU23 Yeah I agree. Assuming they aren’t signed could be incorrect. Schools will pretty much let kids out of their NLI.

@JayHawkFanToo I’ll wait to pass any judgment on it until we see who it is if it happens.

  • I will guess it is a player that has not signed a LOI only a financial aid package since coaches cannot recruit players with signed LOIs.

  • Memphis and Louisville getting involved with Hurt. That recruitment is going to be a dog fight to the end. I sure hope he takes visits and commits early.

UCLA just visited him a couple days ago as well.

Consensus top 5 player, great fit for the modern game, seriously considering staying more than a year. Def going to be a knock down drag out.

  • For clarification, Memphis worries me because of Mike Miller’s relationship with the Hurts.

  • I can’t help but think this FBI cloud will really hurt us until it is over or it completely blows up and everyone else gets pulled in.

  • @Kcmatt7 nothing will happen major long as ku it’s not directly implicated Sean Miller still has a job in Arizona and they have him actually on tape doing a lot of legal stuff

  • @ReggieKansas

    1. Sean Miller is taking scraps right now because his entire recruiting class fell apart after the FBI probe.

    2. I’ll believe the tape when the DOJ actually uses it as evidence. There is no proof of that tape existing at the moment. Well, other than Miller not filing a lawsuit against ESPN for defamation.

  • He are the players ranked 25 - 65 that have not signed LOIs

    (30) Shareef O’Neal - PF, UCLA, (31) Jordan Brown - C, unsigned, (35) Elijah Weaver - PG, USC, (37) Brandon Williams - PG, unsigned, (40) Khavon Moore - SF, Texas Tech, (41) Taeshon Cherry - PF, Arizona State, (55) Jairus Hamilton - SF, Boston College, (56) Courtney Ramey - PG, unsigned

That’s eight guys. I’m going to discount O’Neal and Brown right off the bat. O’Neal has already switched commitments once. Brown hasn’t seriously considered any non-Pac 12 schools. Taeshon Cherry considered Texas A&M, but other than that, he’s a California kid that considered west coast schools.

That leaves five guys - Weaver, Williams, Moore, Hamilton and Ramey.

Weaver is a big PG (6-5). He’s from Florida and considered schools from all over the country (UConn, UVA, UCLA, Oklahoma State, Ohio State, NC State, Mizzou, etc.). He’s currently committed to USC. He would be an interesting replacement for Langford. He’s a lefty that is more of a pass first PG.

Williams is a 6-1 PG. Williams is more of a score first PG. He would be a bit of a duplicate of Charlie Moore on this roster. He’s a good player, but I don’t know that he makes sense on this roster with Moore and Dotson already in the fold.

Moore is a 6-8 SF that can do a bit of everything. He’s not super athletic like some guys, but he’s a very solid player in every aspect. However, he’s committed to Texas Tech, and it is generally considered poor form to poach a committed recruit from a league rival. He’s a nice player. I would guess with Smith leaving, Tech will be locking this signing down.

Hamilton is interesting. KU was pursuing him early, but backed off and went after other targets. He’s a really good player. A bigger version of Agbaji in some ways (6-8, 220). Duke, UNC, Florida, Arizona and others were interested, but he ultimately picked Boston College. He’s the type of player that might be interested in switching his offer, and missing on Langford would give KU an opening on the wing. He’s at least a three year player. Probably a four year guy.

And finally Ramey. He’s a 6-3 PG, but he could be considered a combo guard. He was linked to Mizzou, but hasn’t signed. Louisville has started pursuing him again. He was HS teammates with Carte’Are Gordon (SLU commit). KU has never been connected to him, but he has been connected to both Texas and Oklahoma State. He’s unsigned, so he could be in play.

If I had to guess, I would say Hamilton is the mystery man, although I have no insider information on that.

  • @Kcmatt7 right and like i said as of right now ku is in good shape unless more damming evidence come to light. I wouldnt worry about it remeber 50 schools were implicated

  • Maybe im alone in this but im not sold on matthew hurts game. I mean he shoots it well but hes not very explosive

  • @justanotherfan

    Some good research FYI.

I think of the players you listed Ramey, Weaver and Cherry are the only three that KU hasn’t had contact with.

Brandon Williams is announcing soon after his visit to Gonzaga, this is a Oregon/Zona battle. All the recent buzz is Oregon won him on his visit.

Hamilton’s brother transferred into BC as well. I can’t see him leaving that situation with family.

Ramey seems like the most open of all especially since he’s not signed anywhere but it looks like Texas, Missouri, Oklahoma St & Louisville have the most attention from him. I don’t think Ramey fits the need KU is looking for.

This makes me think this is a kid signed (LOI) with another program who doesn’t want to risk his current position unless Langford goes to Indiana.

I also wouldn’t be surprised if it was another big with the unknown situations surrounding Doke coming back and De Sousa being possibly ruled ineligible.

I would also assume it’s someone the staff would view as an impact player in some way to compensate for what Langford would bring to the table. With our roster there really isn’t a need for development type players. It’s got to be someone that would have a chance to start.

Name I’ll throw out- Jaylen Hoard, signed with Wake Forest early but I hear more and more grumblings. We recruited players in his HS area (Aaron Wiggins, Dotson, Ian Steere) among others.

  • @ReggieKansas

Your right he’s not a quick fast twitch athlete. I wasn’t as high on him last summer. His Jr film looks much improved though. Such a skilled player inside/out. His shooting numbers this year were rare for a player his size.
