LAWSONS LOCKED IN AT KU UNLESS SELF GETS FIRED

  • His dad was apparently on some show saying his boys could return to Memphis depending on the KU/FBI thing… Not sure what this all means but the father is stirring the pot none the less

  • What? - - - I don’t see that happening. - for one this thing is going to drag out - who knows for sure how long this thing will go on , then after the investigation is over then the NCAA has to determine if there would be any penalities.

Then I think they would have to sit again right? - Unless it was really bad. - -Na I just can’t see that. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @jayballer73

Really wish the father wouldn’t comment on things such as this but what else is new in today’s world. Everyone has a platform

  • Easily the worst part of taking the Lawsons is their dad. I’d be good with no more Lawsons once Dedric and KJ are done at KU.

That said it was on a Memphis radio show and the kids would have to give up another year of playing ball. I’ll believe it if it happens.

  • Eye rolls. Keelon just trying to soak up as much fame as he possibly can.

  • There is no way either one goes back. I see a better chance of Dedrick declaring for the draft than having to sit another season to play for an unproven coach when he would be an All-American candidate and lottery pick if he stays at KU… With a good showing next season K J might be borderline draftable or could play overseas which will not happen if he has to sit another year. Sounds like daddy Lawson is taking lessons from daddy Ball in how to milk every minute of fame and look like a clown in the process.

I should have listened to the thing before taking the click bait tweet at face value.

This is a quote: “If something goes down with Kansas as far as Coach Self being fired, I think the boys would entertain it. Right now they’re at Kansas. But if something comes down, and if Penny wants them, it’d be up to the boys.”

  • Also mentioned that Self told Dedric/KJ that coaches weren’t involved with anything and all will be fine etc…

  • Shocking that a radio host would mislead for clicks…

  • Ugh. Let’s hope these Lawson kids are as good as advertised.

  • Lovely. The quote speaks for itself. If they want to transfer, if dad wants to run his mouth, then leave. Leave now.

I think this was overblown tbh. I wouldn’t even blame the Lawsons for considering transferring back if Self was fired. The host led him into it too.

Also one other important thing to note is that this is a regular radio appearance for their dad on this show. And it started with him talking about other basketball related stuff. So it’s not like he ran to go do this show or brought up his sons himself. Actually listening to the segment shows it is completely different from the tweet. But I know not everyone here wants to bother so I wanted to post some more thoughts on it.

The actual quote has the dad saying “if Self gets fired”, which as we know isn’t happening barring something truly insane. In which case KU basketball is completely set on fire anyway.

Sure he could have just refused to answer when the host brought it up, that would have been ideal, but oh well.

  • OP probably needs changed or the entire thread should just get deleted at this point honestly.

  • @BShark Just a bit protective of our team …

  • By no means am I a fan of their dad but this whole thing was absurd. I was annoyed until I listened to the radio segment.

@Kcmatt7 If I delete it, someone else is just going to make a thread about it when they come across it. Renaming isn’t a bad idea though.

  • There we go. Nice and full of caps.

  • Goodness, you know if the boys have his type of attitude, show’em the door today. Why wait? I’d say I have a better chance of winning the lotto than them going back, they’d have to sit another year. A lot of people said these guys were trouble when we took them, run your mouth and get left high and dry we don’t need guys like this.

  • @kjayhawks I think @BShark has handled this pretty well. The quote was taken out of context and it basically said the Lawson’s were here as long as Bill was the head coach. They are at Kansas and not looking to transfer unless something crazy happens and Bill gets fired. And that Bill has told the players that there is nothing to worry about with the coaches being involved.

If anything, when put in the right context, it should make you feel better that someone with ears on the inside is saying the coaches have straight up told they players that they have nothing to worry about.

To be fair the kids have been towing the line since the initial crap in practice.

Also what attitude? I actually don’t think there is anything wrong with what he said. Kids are often at a program mostly for the coaching staff. Who on the roster right now is here because it’s KU? Just Mitch right?

  • @BShark ya that’s what I was saying. -I just can’t see them sitting another year. - Dedric isn’t going to want to have to sit out - - -Again - he wants to get this done and get to the NBA. - unless the FBI wraps this up soon and the NCAA reveals any penalities - before the upcoming season and they are bad enough the Lawson’s can withdraw and be eligible immediately at Memphis - I just don’t see that happening.

  • If anything, I interpret this as loyalty to Self and a good thing. Long live the King!

  • Hey he was on show talking about this. The father has made this a talking point for no reason. Don’t know why these fathers keep getting a platform.

Must be the Lavarr Ball disease spreading

The host brought it up. I mean he didn’t have to answer but he didn’t bring it up. I’d be more worried if he had. 🤷

  • He said…“IF SELF GETS FIRED”. We’re now into the unicorn segment of the show…

Ochai would be another. He seemed to have stars in his eyes while talking about Kansas.

  • Dad reminds me of another dad, L Ball

  • Kansas needs to make sure and get the message out there that Kansas is a victim in all of this. They are stepping up by denying the need for an internal investigation. Our program is in a constant state of investigation, 24/7/365.

  • I don’t mind the father’s statements, honestly.

If something were to happen and Bill Self were to get fired, that changes the entire situation at Kansas and I would guess more than just the Lawson brothers would be looking to move. That’s just a reality. Most of these guys have zero ties to KU other than the basketball program. If that were jeopardized, I think many of them would probably leave. A guy like Mitch Lightfoot would probably stay because he has personal ties to the university. But for most of the other guys, they don’t have any real connection to the university outside basketball.

That’s a dad looking out for his kids. If the situation at KU were to fall apart, there would be a mass exodus, same as what happened at Louisville, same as what would happen anywhere else.

So…every 4 years the guard is down for one day on leap years? 😺

  • As I have posted before I am not an X’s and O’s fan. I pat myself on the back for knowing people quite well. I have been on edge about the Lawsons from the getgo. I hope to be surprised that all works smoothly for their adjustment as solid team players, highly coachable. Loads of potential for the brothers, but…

  • The radio guy came on local KC radio, segment was pretty funny. He said the Lawsons LOVE it at KU and such.

  • Also said their dad has enormous respect for Self and the KU coaching staff. It would definitely take Self being fired for them to consider going back to Memphis etc…

  • I understand that a lot has come out clarifying his comments and how certain things were taken out of context and other statements were overblown. I just still can’t believe he said anything about the situation whatsoever about there being a school change under any circumstance.
