West Virginia Mountaineers - Big Monday - 8 pm ESPN

  • Remember when WVU won the game on a Svi - KSU impersonation.

  • @nuleafjhawk They’re telling the same Perry Ellis Bingo jokes about Carter.

  • @wrwlumpy that maddening thing about this game was there was no media outrage, wether it be National like the KU ISU blocking foul on Niang vs EJ or local like the KSU game. It’s only BS when KU wins.

  • @kjayhawks

Nobody roots for Goliath - Wilt Chamberlain.

  • Marvelous school and country side.

    Now massacre their team.

  • I was reviewing Billy’s case when Self announced that it was “out of KU’s hands.” Self announced this Dec 20. KU began the investigation Nov 11. All the paperwork gained was over a month. They submitted it Dec 20 and he has served a suspension for too many games. Now they are conducting their fact finding? So, if KU took from Nov 11 - Dec 20, the ncaa has had Dec 20 - 23. Let’s give them Dec 24-Jan2. We are now Jan 14?
I’m sorry if you don’t smell something, you’re kinda stupid. The ncaa has had plenty of time to take all that KU gathered and review it. They should’ve had a ruling the week of Jan 2, or Jan 11 at the latest. The break shouldn’t be that big of a problem. Everyone is using the break as an excuse.

Either they have a ruling of indefinite suspension, or they have decided to let him play with time served and are trying to carefully craft some kind of official position to the public. Something tells me that it’s the later. If they were going to suspend him indefinitely, they would have ruled already. So, whatever KU gave them, made them think twice. I have a good feeling that he might be freed soon. The question is, when? He has served more than enough suspension time, so they can’t add anymore suspensions. The only other penalty would be indefinite suspension meaning Billy goes bye-bye.

Maybe like Silvio, we’ll all wake up Monday and learn he’s free to play against WVU. What a great announcement on Jan 15.

  • Playing against experienced guards in Jevon Carter and Daxter Miles Jr. Playing against a West Virginia team that is looking to rebound after a loss and should be very focused. Playing in Morgantown where whistles go to die. Playing against a KU team that lacks grit and toughness. If KU doesn’t make 3’s this will be ugly. West Virginia by 12. I hope I’m wrong.

12 is closer than I think. Gonnnn be ugly.

  • @truehawk93 This is the risk you take when you do something stupid. Billy obviously did something that’s not on the up and up and now he’s dealing with the consequences. He’s also now learning the invaluable life lesson that his bad choices will impact others besides himself. His bad decision is hurting the team that offered him a free education while trying to prepare himself for an NBA future. That’s not even factoring in that Billy is hurting NBA future by not getting game minutes against other future NBA players.

  • @wrwlumpy Carter could be Perry’s Grandpa.

  • @wrwlumpy You mean the game where the dude stopped his dribble at the 3 point line and then took a layup? I’d forgotten, but thanks for the memories!

  • It’s Man up Monday. I hope Self has some good ammo to pump these guys up.

Rebounding is the key to a win. These guys win the rebound battle we win the game

  • Ohhh boy what a big game tonight. This game will be different than in our past trips to Morgantown. WVU will be favored (maybe not new) but will also be ranked higher, and at #2 to boot. This is a different situation psychologically speaking than past trips where KU is king. Our record speaks to a tie for first place but everyone knows we’re just grinding and have very little margin for error.

We’re still KU so we’ll get WVU’s best shot, but the pressure isn’t the same this year. Could make for some scrappy good play from our “underdogs”. RCJH

  • WVU favored by 5.5.

  • @wrwlumpy oh, I thought it would have been more, should have done my research.

  • This game is a real test to see if our guys are ready to step up. We shouldn’t let them control tempo. Period. And we shouldn’t turn the ball over with 4 capable guards on the floor.

Winning this game would give us our best shot of earning #14. Losing creates more of an uphill battle.

In some ways… I see this team as being a team that might end up playing better away from AFH than at home. There is more pressure at home to “hold down the fort” while playing on the road creates an opportunity for us.

  • Seth Walder ESPN Analytics

Kansas-West Virginia on Monday is a high-leverage game for the Big 12 regular season title. The Jayhawks will have a 46% chance to win the title outright with a win, 21% with a loss. The Mountaineers will have a 19% shot at the outright title with a win, 5% with a loss.

  • @dylans I think Seth Walder has a 100% chance of not knowing what he’s talking about. My personal opinion.

  • @nuleafjhawk 🤓 Analytics never won a game.

  • @drgnslayr

This game is definitely a test on many levels. You have to beat WVU physically and mentally.

Usually KU comes into Morgantown and Huggy Bear is the underdog at home. This time WVU is favored and ranked higher. KU has played pretty well on the road this season however this will be the most hostile environment they have faced. We’ll see whether either dynamic has any effect on the game.

I know Self doesn’t like to play up the revenge factor but how could he ignore it here. 4 straight years we’ve been defeated in that building and a few of them have been embarrassing. I hope he plays with the emotions of Devonte & Svi up on that fact that they have never won in Morgantown and see how they respond. I would like to think that gets the competitive juices going.

The battle of the boards has never been so important. WV lives off 2nd chance pts and we all know how they force turnovers and create a certain physicality to the game. I’m watching these guys tonight on the “effort” chart. If we see guys matching the effort of the WV players we have to feel good about our chances.

    Matchup of the game:

Carter vs Graham. Both players have improved tremendously as Sr’s. Carter has really advanced his offensive game to match his defensive ability. Graham is so important to our offense so its going to be very interesting how Devonte gets his shots. Carter was the only guy this season to limit Trae Young from his usual spectacular game. I don’t think we can win this one without DG having a good game, its vital we find ways to get him free.

  • Self said they spent 30 minutes practicing in-bounds plays against WV. Every year it never seems like enough time

  • @BeddieKU23 Here’s hoping we’re working on a press break that is fast, attacking, and makes WVU pay for pressing – not the slow … methodical … lobs … that permit opponents to dictate pace.

I think we hope for this every year and we get the same press break. I expect nothing different and hope to be surprised. A lot of guys making their first trip to Morgantown as rotation players- Doke, Mitch, Newman, Garrett, Cunliffe, De Sousa. I bet De Sousa is sparely used unless we get into foul trouble unfortunately.

Vegas line moved to 7 1/2 WV, up 3 points. Certainly not trending well in that regard.

The boys have to man up. Self can certainly facilitate that heading into tip.

  • Wow, didn’t know that two of my favorite players in both Pro hoops and baseball (West and Brett) are alums there. As usual, nice research and pics wrwlumpy!

Love the comment above on this is the place whistles go to die. That being the case, I’d like to see Sosinski and DeSousa get in some hard tackles, er, I mean, aggressive play, while giving Doke some breathers. You know, just to let em know we’re not all small wiry guards 😉

  • @BeddieKU23

Devonte can be a bit sneaky… I hope he plays sneaky tonight… and draws fouls on Carter. That is our clearest path to victory.

    Get Carter in foul trouble!

Tech got Carter into foul trouble and he was forced to sit for a crucial stretch in the 2nd half that turned the game so that’s a great point. He’s definitely their catalyst. I hope Devonte’s sneaky numbers of late (9 FT attempts per game in Conference Play) continues tonight

  • @BeddieKU23 didn’t he have to sit a spell in the ou game?

I believe so he had 4 fouls in that one, Carter is a very aggressive defender easily leading the conference in steals.

  • Speaking of fouls… another piece of gossip…

WVU will become the first team to use “hack-a-Doke” if necessary.

  • @HighEliteMajor

In a perfect world that would be ideal. A quick break of the full court press usually results in easy point at the other end. If KU can do it consistently then Huggy will have to call the dogs off and lose its advantage or risk giving up easy point.

Having said that…No battle plan survives contact with the enemy - Colin Powell (Helmuth von Moltke had the original and longer quote)

  • I just remember frank got 2 fouls in the first 2 mins last year. (tiny stretch)! Ahmad killed us! Somebody else had to sit, LL?

Yup and it was close at half. Jackson fouled out, we fouled more then them (which is comical).

I remember Ahmad being NBA jams hot. Hopefully not tonight as its his 2nd game back

  • @JayHawkFanToo And I don’t think you can make WVU pay every time, or every other time. You risk getting sped up too much. But attacking provides opportunity. I’m more about being aggressive getting the ball up, then looking to capitalize on a 2 on 1, or 3 on 2 as it is available. But also some specific, and rather easy, press break schemes that can create opportunity. Down court screens are big items there. I would think that KU wants a high possession game. Just not out of control,. sped up. But you’ve heard my press break stuff for years. I think we win. 86-83.

  • I’m afraid this could be a really ugly game for Doke, as long as it takes for him to carry throw with his move at times – or when he wants to put the ball down on the floor at times - -he puts it on the floor in the lane tonight? - - - plain and simple he is getting stripped every time - -if Jevon Carter is ANYWHERE in the neighborhood - -done deal Doke will be stripped - -this could very easily be a case where we are going to have to have De Sousa on the floor more, very high chance Doke going to get himself in foul trouble - -sorry to say WV just quicker athletes in and around him. - Doke making good progress BUT -this very well might be one of those games - -quickness.

Doke has improves substantial with NOT fouling - still can always hope for good results. - My personal gut feeling tonight sad to say - - this year I just think it could get ugly like 13-14 point win for WV. If not, and we win - - I’ll be more then happy to take my thrashing lol. – -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @Jayballer54 One thing that Doke has learned to do better here recently is get deeper post position and an early seal. Which are two big things because he is shooting so well from close range and the deep he is the harder to double team because you have to recover further to the shooter then. Early seals help when the ball is reversed to the 2nd and 3rd side for an easy dunk.

  • @StLJhawk Brett was only born there.

very true, however he might be getting those easy dunks as we are probably about to see the old hack a doke -as soon as Doke catches the ball before he can go up they will foul -and make him earn them from the line. - - HOWEVER I do believe he is getting at least a tinsy bit better - -just hope we can play a solid game and let the chips fall where they may tonight.

Was listening to a local sorts show here in Topeka this afternoon - -and agree maybe that actually - -KU playing with house money tonight , not hardly anyone thinking they will come out of there tonight with a win , so may be able to go in and be able to play a little looser.

We lose , no one was expecting us to win anyways - -If we happen to steal one - - that would be big - -we shall see - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @HighEliteMajor

I believe that is what I meant. If you break the press quick with one or two passes you will have a mismatch at the other end resulting in relatively easy baskets. Now, if KU can do it consistently, then WVU woul have to step back and its pressing advantage is greatly abated.

Remember KU playing against UAB coached by Anderson who had just upset Kentucky with the 40 minutes of hell gimmick (full court press) at the 2004 NCAA? Miles and Langford consistently broke the full court press and Simien had a fiel day scoring 30 points including 18-20 from the FT. KU won easily 100-74. Granted WVU is a much better and more complete team but when you rely on something so heavily like WVU does on the press it can come back to bite you.

KU should be playing more relaxed now. It has more players available, although the real impact is probably negligible, but pretty much everybody penciled this game as a loss anyway, so it is really playing with house money, like someone mentioned.

  • Ok question , how many times do we ( KU ) - turn the ball over tonight? - -I say 17. - - - I think Malik turns it over the most - - -5

How many fouls will there by WV ? - I say 19 - -I think Doke gets in early foul trouble - -hope not - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • A 4 guard lineup should tear the stupid WVU press apart and be just a terrible mismatch that favors KU by 10.

However, we all know that Huggy changes the rules. And it’s genius. He is training his players to punch the other team in the mouth. And every other team has learned all season that punching someone in the mouth is a foul. So we always take a nice sucker punch in Morgantown, that we usually don’t recover from.

What I’d love to see from this team is some emotion. Some toughness. Knock Carter on his ass the first time he drives the lane, and give him a little stare down afterwards. Play with an edge. Play like this is the Colosseum and the only way you leave is with someone else’s head. If you lose, just do it knowing that it wasn’t because WVU is tougher.

This really could be the game that turns the tide of the season. Hope we see something special tonight.

  • The Blueprint is out on how to beat the WVU press btw. Stephen F. Austin showed everyone. Give the ball to a 4 who can dribble and clear all the way out. Some teams just aren’t ballsy enough to play 4 guards, or they are too stupid to make the adjustment.

  • There is something that happens to Senior’s that play for Bill Self at Kansas. Devonte and Svi think about all of the upper classmen that would not let KU lose. Oh yeah, I liked Doke’s attitude as he fouled out. He learned that you can’t look at a monster you just dunked on who slapped you as you embarrassed him.

    and Svi

  • How about Svi as I called it earlier in the year, he can go from icey to blazing in seconds, had 5 points in the first 33 minutes and 12 in the final 7. Everyone that stepped on the floor tonight battled and played their asses off, I’m very proud of that.
